"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation's first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. The ability of companies and countries to mine copper and other mineral commodities competitively and in the process to generate new wealth depends on their mineral endowment. Chile, for example, produces and exports copper because it is well endowed with high-quality, low-cost deposits. This production creates wealth that benefits mining companies and their stockholders, the government, local communities, as well as copper consumers around the world. The widespread perception that mineral endowment must largely determine competitiveness, or what economists call comparative advantage, must be true at any particularly moment. Countries with abundant reserves must be competitive. This follows from the definition of reserves — the quantity of a mineral commodity found in discovered deposits that are profitable to exploit under current conditions. As a result, it is a tautology and not particularly interesting. The important question is what causes reserves to change over time, producing in the process new wealth and shifts in competitiveness?

Flame retardant materials can be incorporated or applied to products, including plastics and textiles, to increase their resistance to fire. Incorporating a flame retardant in combustible materials and plastics is a common procedure to reduce the risk of fires. Flame retardant applications include interior and exterior woods, structural steel columns, fabrics, open and closed cell foam, pressure treated wood, Formica and all types of fabrics for use in commercial applications as well as residential applications where their fire protection products can save lives and valuables. Huntite and hydromagnesite are amongst the most important flame retardant additives materials. Although various areas of the world have potential huntite and hydromagnesite deposits, their place in industry is not well known, and a detailed field search for their deposits has not yet been conducted. They are active during the starting phase of a fire, in that they prevent the spread of an inner or exterior source of ignition to the flame-retarded material, thereby, preventing, delaying or inhibiting the spread of a fire. Flame-retardants are, therefore, just one element among many in a concept for preventive fire safety. To obtain huntite and hydromagnesite concentrates that are more than 95% pure, which are used in flame retardant industry, flotation tests were conducted on low-quality huntite and hydromagnesite ores.

"SUMMARY A practical application of nitric acid oxidation of sulphides, based on the principles of the Arseno process, has been developed for the Cinola ore. Development of the process has been based on testwork conducted by Bacon Donaldson of Vancouver and Hazen Research of Denver, and on conceptual engineering performed by Minproc Engineers of Denver.A comprehensive Stage II report for the project has been submitted to the B.C. permitting agencies, containing provisions for a zero discharge tailings impoundment system and prevention of acid mine drainage. Approval in principle is expected in early 1989.A feasibility study recently completed by Minproc Engineers and Davy McKee Corporation demonstrates that this project can be brought to production for a capital expenditure of C$120 million for a mill throughput of 6,000 tonnes/day and operated at a total direct operating cost of less than $20/tonne.INTRODUCTION The Cinola orebody was discovered in 1970. It is situated approximately in the centre of Graham Island, the largest of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It represents the mid to upper levels of a hydrothermal precious metals system, characterized by intense brecciation and silicification. Gold is associated with finely disseminated sulphides in a breccia matrix and in free form in numerous quartz veins.Ownership of the property has changed hands a number of times, and previous attempts to bring the property to production have failed. Two critical factors have frequently been blamed for difficulty in creating a successful project: namely, process and environment factors, hence the title of this paper.City Resources (Canada) Limited (""City"") acquired the property in 1986, and commenced an aggressive campaign to verify ore reserves, to carry out metallurgical research and to address environmental issues.PROJECT OVERVIEW When the Cinola orebody was discovered, the significance of hydrothermal mineraliza¬tion associated with crustal plate boundaries was not recognized, and for several years, the orebody was considered an uneconomic curiosity. If the type and location of orebody sought by many companies engaged in gold exploration were to be specified, it would probably be a description of the Cinola orebody - it is a large (greater than 1.5 million ounce), low grade (2.45 gm/tonne), refractory ore reserve associated with the Pacific rim crustal plate boundary. The industry appears to have recognized in the past few years that its future lies in the exploitation of such orebodies, and is prepared to come to grips with the technical problems associated with such ores. In this sense, the Cinola orebody might be considered to have come of age."

Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. All samples tested showed some loss of heating value for the 5-month period under all 4 storage conditions. The losses increased as the time of storage increased, with the pan-storage samples showing somewhat greater losses than those in cans. The individual daily analyses for the first 2 weeks and the analyses every other day for the third and fourth weeks of storage vary within the approximate tolerance of the test for heating value. During the first 2 months of storage the changes in heating values were not Significant for the samples from Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Colorado. The Ohio coal indicated some loss by the end of I month, which increased to a value measurable with certainty by the end of 2 months. These data show that (1) small changes may occur even to samples in closed cans and (2) the laboratory sample should be handled as expeditiously as is practical until the analysis is completed. The statement by the ASTM that "If the B.t.u. determination is an important consideration in the sale of coal, the time elapsed between sampling and analysis shall not exceed 30 days,"3/ is quite adequate for 3 of the 4 coals tested. The change in the Ohio coal stored for 30 days is merely indicated and could not be determined with certainty by the techniques normally employed. The data on free-swelling indexes determined on can samples, after 30° C. air drying, show that only the Indiana coal lost more than one unit in free-swelling index number in 120 days. No significant changes were observed with the samples from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado in the 5-month period.

A extração de alumina por digestão ocorre em meio reacional entre a pasta de bauxita e licor cáustico aquecido. Este aquecimento ocorre em uma série de trocadores de calor, que utilizam vapor saturado produzido em caldeiras de gás natural. Aproximadamente vinte minutos após a passagem pelos trocadores, o licor alimenta o reator e a mistura entre este fluido quente e a pasta fria deve atingir uma temperatura pré-definida de digestão. O controlador tradicional não era capaz de integrar o circuito entre os produtores e consumidores de vapor, por causa do deadtime do processo que gera a necessidade de um modelo robusto para ser acoplado à lógica de PID, mais a questão da não-linearidade do processo de transferência de calor. Este artigo apresenta a metodologia e os resultados de uma aplicação de tecnologia baseada em lógica Fuzzy em trocadores de calor para controle da temperatura reacional. A ferramenta do projeto é uma plataforma de controle avançado que não necessita de modelos fenomenológicos e é capaz de lidar com sistemas não-lineares. A média da temperatura de digestão ficou 0,4°C mais próxima do setpoint e a variabilidade reduziu em 61%, o que permitiu a redução em 3,2% no consumo específico de vapor.

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

Float dust deposits in return airways in bituminous coal and lignite mines present a special explosion hazard. Research is in progress at the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine to evaluate the degree of the hazard and to develop measures for preventing dissemination of dust into the ventilating air current. To determine the extent of this hazard prevailing in operating coal mines, 711 dust samples were collected in 50 mines located in the major coal fields of the United States. The mean quantity of coal and the incombustible content of the dust in the samples were determined. The term "float dust" is used to designate particles smaller than 74 microns in diameter (particles passing a No. 200 sieve) which have settled from the air current. Dust usually found in roadways and in working places is coarser than float dust, and is termed "coarse dust" (particles passing a No. 20 sieve). Variations in amount and incombustible content of coarse dust in a midwestern mine were studied previously.

The prevention of accidents from falls of roof and coal requires a considerable amount of personal judgment , for conditions are different even in adjoining working places in the same mine , and conditions may change from hour to hour even in the same working place as the coal is shot down and loaded . Experience has shown that many men can not or do not exercise enough care to protect themselves from injuries ; moreover , where the foremen have been made directly responsible for the safety of the men under them , accidents from falls of roof and coal have , in many instances , been reduced as much as 50 per cent . There is now no question that careful , constant , and intensive supervision is essential in preventing acci- { dents and more especially accidents of this class . Falls of roof and of coal account for approximately 50 per cent of all coal mine accidents and annually result in the death of approximately 1,000 men and cause lost - time injury to approximately 50,000 men . These and other accidents are recurring with little or no diminution , usually not because of the lack of knowledge of safe and dangerous practices , or of the technique of safety , but largely because of the lukewarm interest of major executives in safety or the failure of mine officials to formulate and to enforce common - sense rules and regulations . When failure is the outcome of a sincere attempt of the managing officials to teach safety to the miner , the fault may usually be attributed to misguided effort . Various solutions for the problem of eliminating accidents from falls of roof or coal have been suggested , some of which are : Standard system of timbering for the specified mining districts ; departure from the room-and - pillar system to a more concentrated system of mining ; more intensive supervision - that is , 1 section foreman for every 25 loaders instead of 1 section foreman for 75 , 80 , or even more loaders the practice in most mining districts . - However , investigations conducted by the writer at numerous mines operated by a number of mining companies in several districts show that employees and officials alike are inclined to work under loose and unsupported roof , relying solely on the " drummy " sound and on their judgment and experience as to whether the roof will stay in place for one hour or for several hours . With but few exceptions , men who had been injured by falls of roof or ccal or were found working under loose and unsupported roof , admitted that they knew of the possibly unsafe condition , but it was their opinion that the roof or coal was not loose enough to fall for some time .

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a pro-posed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation was performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a ?pull test? equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

Four years of intensive exploration effort by Newmont Mining Corp. came to a climax May 27 in Carlin, Nevada, when local, state and federal officials joined with company officers at a dedication ceremony saluting the start-up of the firm&apos;s wholly- owned subsidiary, Carlin Gold Mining Co. Before an invited audience at the plant site, Newmont&apos;s President Plato Malozemoff and Nevada&apos;s Senator Howard D. Cannon pushed a lever and watched the new melting furnace rotate until a brilliant orange-red stream of molten gold poured forth from its mouth. Two 1200-oz bricks of bullion were poured that day, and they are the first of many that will lift this mine into the number two slot among U.S. gold producers and fourth among all gold mines on the North American continent. Although Newmont Mining first entered the gold mining business in 1929 in Grass Valley, California, the Company had operated no gold producers since the well-known Government directive L208, issued in 1942, closed down U.S. gold mines for the duration of World War 11. Now it is back in the business in a big way-a $10 million mine and plant capable of producing 200,000 oz. per year. All the gold from the Carlin operations is earmarked for the U.S. Mint in San Francisco.

Foram realizados tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento para aumentar a tenacidade do material, aço NM87 designação 1045, uma vez que ele apresentava, no estado inicial, baixa absorção de energia. Com o material mais tenaz foi obtida uma melhor faixa de energia para cálculo das incertezas. Foram feitos corpos de prova com variações nas medidas laterais, de comprimento e profundidade do entalhe e ensaiados na temperatura ambiente para determinação das incertezas do tipo A e B. Com as incertezas determinadas pelos métodos estatísticos e não estatísticos, foram feitos ensaios, variando-se a temperatura, para obter dados de ductilidade (energia absorvida, expansão lateral e percentual de área dúctil) em relação a temperatura e com esses dados determinar-se a temperatura de transição dúctil – frágil e sua incerteza.

Use of vehicles with electric drive, which could reduce our oil dependence, will depend on lithium-ion batteries. But is there enough lithium? Will we need to import it from a new cartel? Are there other materials with supply constraints? We project the maximum demand for lithium and other materials if electric-drive vehicles expanded their market share rapidly, estimating material demand per vehicle for four battery chemistries. Total demand for the United States is based on market shares from an Argonne scenario that reflects high demand for electric-drive vehicles, and total demand for the rest of the world is based on a similar International Energy Agency scenario. Total material demand is then compared to estimates of production and reserves, and the quantity that could be recovered by recycling, to evaluate the adequacy of supply. We also identify producing countries to examine potential dependencies on unstable regions or future cartels.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. This extends to sample preparation too when reducing particle size and dividing the sample in the process.CITATION:Vogel, D A, 2017.
