Cathode stripping machine technology has been developed significantly both in electrorefining (ER) and electrowinning (EW) applications in the last ten years. The main driver has been robotic cathode handling, which has enabled increased flexibility to meet different layout and material handling requirements for both ER and EW processes. Additionally, cathode stripping stations have been continuously developed to optimize speed and to reduce mechanical stress of permanent cathodes. 'taco' type cathodes have been proven as beneficial approach for high capacity operations (particularly in Cu ER), where over 600 cathodes per hour continuous throughput has been achieved. However, the latest developments also apply to split type cathode stripping. Besides material handling, the modern cathode stripping machine has also an important role to provide information for production and quality monitoring. This paper describes the latest developments from the field of copper cathode stripping based on several different projects implemented in the recent years. INTRODUCTION After introduction of the permanent cathode technology in the late 1970s, it became the prevailing technology in copper refineries over the traditional starting sheet process by the end of 1980s. The main driver was less labour-intensive production due to fewer processing steps required along with more automated electrode handling equipment (cathode stripping machine, anode preparation machine, anode scrap washing machine and tankhouse cranes). Since then the design of the cathode stripping machine has followed the development of permanent cathode technology. The main development steps so far can be summarized as follows: Full Deposit Stripping Machine (FDSM) based on waxed permanent cathodes or cathodes with bottom edge strips resulting in split cathodes (copper sheets separated, see Figure 1) Wax less cathode stripping based on V-groove on bottom of the edge strip resulting in either ‘taco’ cathodes (enveloped copper sheets, see Figure 1) or split cathodes Full Deposit Robotic Stripping Machines (FDRSM) using 1–5 robots for permanent cathode handling and cathode stacking.

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. Thermodynamic modeling of the heap provides the means to quantify the effectiveness of these different operational parameters on maintaining the required operating temperatures to avoid freezing within the heap. Os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos, em geral, aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e satisfatória resistência à corrosão, características associadas à possibilidade de realização de tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento. Nesse contexto, no presente trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos das condições desses tratamentos na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de um aço inoxidável martensítico de médio teor de carbono. Foram consideradas três temperaturas de aquecimento na têmpera e seis temperaturas de revenimento. A avaliação microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de dureza. Foi observada a elevação na dureza do aço com o aumento da temperatura de aquecimento na têmpera, assim como a dissolução dos carbonetos presentes no material. No revenimento subsequente observou-se o aparecimento do pico de dureza referente ao endurecimento secundário a uma temperatura de 500°C.

Stratigraphy, structure and closure of the Paloma field are discussed, with some details regarding the present state of development. The Paloma anticline, a large dome modified by faults, is the largest single closed dome in the southern San Joaquin valley without surface outcrop or topographic expression. It owes its discovery to geophysics. Of nine wells drilled to the Stevens sand, seven are productive. The ultimate productive area may approximate 3000 acres when the limits of the field are determined. Introduction The Paloma field derives its name from the Paloma school, ½ mile north of what is now the center of the field. The field is 17 miles southwest of Bakers-field, in the south central part of the San Joaquin Valley (Fig. I). The present developed area and its expected extensions are in townships 31 and 32S., R.26E. It is the most southerly of several fields that produce from the Stevens sand zone. The first well to produce condensate was a joint test drilled by the Western Gulf Oil Co. and The Texas Co. near the center of sec. 3, T.32S., R.26E., well No. 54-3. This well was completed on Aug. 31, 1939, at a depth of 10,178 ft. The initial production was 2280 bbl. a day of condensate and 14,750,000 cu. ft. of gas (½-hr. gauge) through a ?-in. bean. Prior to the drilling of this well, the Ohio Oil Co. discovered and developed a small gas field, which embraces a part of three townships about their common corner but lies chiefly in secs. 31 and 32, T.31S., R.26E. The first well was completed on July I, 1934, at a plugged depth of 5239 ft. after having been drilled to 7957 ft, production was found in a 59-ft. zone IIO ft. below the Fourth Mya bed, within the Sari Joaquin clays. Until recently this field was known as the Buena Vista gas field. It is now carried by the Division of Oil and Gas as the Paloma gas field. Production within the Paloma gas field is derived from six wells, producing from several different zones in the interval from 4177 to 5548 feet. Geology Stratigraphy The sediments penetrated by wells in the Paloma held range in age from Recent to Upper Miocene. The entire section, which exceeds 10,000 ft. in thickness, conforms generally to the standard section of the south central San Joaquin Valley. The producing zone, sometimes called the Paloma sand, is the approximate equivalent of the Stevens sand zone of the Ten Section, Canal, Coles Levee and other fields. The stratigraphic section is shown in Table I. The Baum-type jig used so widely to clean bituminous coals has not been adopted for anthracite. If proved suitable for anthracite, its use might lower preparation costs in some plants. Cleaning trials on a Pennsylvania anthracite in a laboratory-size Baum-type jig were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to provide indicative information that would be helpful in determining whether the cost of a full-scale installation would be justified. Clean coal surpassing standard anthracite specifications was obtained in all sizes from Stove through No. 5 Buckwheat. Recovery effi¬ciencies were acceptable down to 3/16-inch size, but there was excessive loss of coal in the finer sizes. Thus the fine refuse produced in a commercial plant might re¬quire retreatment. A comparative cleaning trial in a dense-medium pilot plant provided a recovery efficiency only l percent higher than obtained in jigging.

A tecnologia de cominuição de minérios através de Prensas de Rolos de Alta Pressão vem se destacando nos diversos segmentos da mineração, o que faz com que as usinas de pelotização de minério venham introduzindo Prensas de Rolos em seu processo produtivo. Apesar dos benefícios dessa mudança, observa-se pouco conhecimento da influência das variáveis intervenientes ao processo de prensagem e sua relação com o Ganho de Superfície Específica. Essa compreensão é fundamental para a maximização do desempenho de prensagem. Esse artigo utiliza Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) para predição dos resultados no Ganho de Superfície Específica e quantifica a relevância de cada variável no processo de prensagem. Os valores preditos gerados pela RNA obtiveram ótima aproximação com os dados reais, o que indica que utilização de RNA possibilita a intervenção proativa no processo produtivo podendo resultar em uma melhoria de desempenho da prensa.

The discussion in this paper centres on examples of mining that are drawn mainly from the coal mining industry. The intention is to review the opportunities that exist for incorporating environmental planning into mining industry practice in New Zealand. The coal mining examples serve to make some general points which have some application for many types of mining.

"IntroductionLaboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction of metal containing ores can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the slurry being ground.,The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refer to a substance which, when mixed into the mill contents, causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use.A wide variety of grinding additive mechanisms have been suggested in the general mining literature (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). The prevention of particle agglomeration, slurry cushioning of grinding media impact, grinding media coating, changing the strength of macro porous rocks, and chemical adsorption on flaw surfaces to change bonding forces and surface energy have all been suggested. More recently, some grinding additive work has been carried out (8,9,10,11) which suggests that the use of efficient chemicals to control the fluidity of dense slurries is a viable economic approach to achieve improved grinding rates. These increased grinding rates are achieved with no increase in power to the grinding mills and apparently with no increase in media consumption costs. Unlike much of the previous work with grinding additives, this recent work is accompanied by a rather complete engineering characterization and prediction of performance capability. The chemicals involved were chosen so as to efficiently control the viscosities of slurries under conditions of high shear yet not adversely affecting flotation, flocculation, and other downstream surface chemistry operations."

"Most of the aggregate used in Nova Scotia is produced from numerous glaciofluvial and ice-contact deposits scattered throughout the province. Production from bedrock sources is increasing, with most of the coarse aggregate used in the Halifax-Dartmouth area coming from quarries operating within the metro area.A recently completed provincial sand and gravel inventory mapping program has identified some ""resource-poor"" areas where comprehensive aggregate evaluation programs are underway. Although some areas of the province are experiencing aggregate supply problems, large volumes are exported to markets as far away as Bermuda.IntroductionThe Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy has been involved with aggregate resource studies for several years, although sand, gravel and crushed stone are not designated as minerals under the Mineral Resources Act of Nova Scotia. Our role has been to provide the aggregate industry with resource data as well as provide similar information to governmental agencies involved with municipal planning, water resource studies and environmental protection regulations. Several private consulting firms use the information in many of their site development studies.We became involved with aggregates in a rather roundabout way. Several years ago, an outcry from inhabitants of a small coastal community over the removal of sand and gravel from a local beach moved the provincial Department of Lands and Forests to take action to protect provincial beaches. We were asked by the Department to provide information and to suggest alternative sources here operators extracting sand and gravel from beaches could relocate. This request initiated an aggregate inventory survey in southeastern Cape Breton, which was later extended to cover the entire province. The initial provincial sand z and gravel inventory survey provided a series of 1:50,000 maps showing the distribution of sand and gravel deposits in the province."

A special inlet system has been developed for a TOF mass spectrometer that allows the equilibrated high-temperature vapors from an atmospheric-pressure flow reactor to be leaked into the ion source of the mass spectrometer without undergoing any compositional changes. Using this flow reactor - mass spectrometer system and a modified transpiration system (one that allows for the carrier stream to be equilibrated with two different condensed samples) a series of fundamental vapor transport studies were undertaken. The results of these studies are summarized as follows: 1. The vapor species in equilibrium with condensed copper (I) chloride were determined to be Cu3C13, Cu4C14, and Cu5C15. The gas mixture is fifty percent tetramer near the melting point (703°K), with the percentage of tetramer decreasing with increasing temperature. The following thermodynamic results were obtained.

A model of ore value distributions is presented that is the culmination of a statistical approach rather than simply a model that has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ore reserves. Detailed geological and physical observations based on large sampling data sets have been used to support the statistical modelling. Fundamental to the modelling process is the concept that the occurrence of a given grade value in space is a function not only of the presence of the mineral but also of the fact that it is associated with a specific trapping mechanism. No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

The Soviet-controlled Government in Afghanistan continued to emphasize development of the country's mineral resources, primarily to supply raw materials and fuel to industrial areas in the Soviet Central Asian republics. In addition to expanding production of natural gas for export to the U.S.S.R., a $600 million2 Soviet-Afghan cooperation project, 1 of 167 such projects established since 1981, was devoted to exploiting the Ainak copper deposit, south of Kabul in Logar Province. Also being developed was the large Hajigak iron ore deposit in the Hindu Kush Mountains, 100 kilometers northwest of Kabul. In addition to these minerals, Afghanistan already produced small quantities of barite, cement, coal, gypsum, salt, and possibly some lapis lazuli. Afghanistan was the world's leading producer of lapis lazuli, a semiprecious gem stone, prior to the Soviet invasion in 1978, but production, although no longer reported, has probably been significantly reduced. It was also reported that Soviet mining engineers and technicians have commenced producing uranium from Lashkangah in the mountainous Khawaja Rawash area near Kabul.3 The Government was also considering mining chromite from Herserak and Mohammed Agha Kulanger, near the border with Pakistan.4 Afghanistan's overall economy remained stagnant in 1983, a result of continuing armed resistance to the Soviet-installed government. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at about $2.8 billion, only marginally higher than the 1982 level. The value of exports was estimated at $720 million, up less than 2% over that of 1982, while imports rose approximately 8% over the same period. Natural gas was by far the leading export, earning about $295 million, up 4% over that of 1982. Approximately 90% of Afghanistan's natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R. Gas exports were used to pay the country's debt to the U.S.S.R., and also to pay for its supplies of petroleum products and other goods, which were imported almost exclusively from the Soviet Union. Some of Afghanistan's petroleum products were supplied by the U.S.S.R. as grants in aid, as Afghanistan did not have any domestic petroleum refining capacity.

Under Bureau of Mines Contract H0122007, Telcom, Inc., with the assistance of Fenix & Scisson, Inc., conducted a 17-month research and development project aimed at provid¬ing a field-test model of a guidance system for use with the Bureau of Mines Probe Drill. The Probe Drill is a part of the Bureau's Mine Rescue System developed under Contract H0101262. Volume I of this report is subdivided into seven sections. Volume II consists of a number of supporting appendices. In addition, there were delivered under the Contract, a number of other documents which are referenced in the text. Section 1 deals with essential contract information, Program Background, and a general system description. Section 2 covers the project chronology in brief. Section 3 is a digest of design considerations and implementation related to the requirements of the Contract. Section 4 is a description of the System, including illustrations of the hardware, and software. Section 5 is devoted to Operation and Maintenance. Para. 5.1 describes step-by-step field assembly and disassembly of the downhole unit. Para. 5.2 covers Operation. Para. 5.3 covers various aspects of maintenance from the lowest field echelon possible. Higher level maintenance must be accomplished in the laboratory, for the present field-test model. Para. 5.4 covers system calibration. Para. 5.5 covers detailed step-by-step operational sequences. Section 6 covers the results of the field testing, post-test evaluation, and recommendations. Essentially, we conclude that the present hardware (field-test model) has proven every aspect of system performance, but failed to provide reliable assurance of an operationally ready system. Telcom, therefore, recommends a three-phase continuing effort devised to provide the operationally-ready model of the system.

When considering the mill drive system for a grinding application, a large number of questions must be answered. Depending on the mill size and type, the mill can be driven by several configurations of drive systems: a single low-speed motor connected to a pinion driving a ring gear, two low-speed motors connected to two pinions and driving a ring gear, or a gearless motor mounted directly. In addition, a gear drive system can have a reducer placed between a high-speed motor(s) and pinion(s) or a power path splitting pinion stand. In some designs the reducer is integral with the pinion stand driven by a high-speed motor. The technical and commercial implications of several mill drive options are presented. Initial cost, cost of installation, cost of commissioning, and cost of operation and maintenance are presented for each drive option considered. The impact of each drive system on the design, cost and operation of the overall plant electrical system is discussed. Also, consideration is given to mill drive availability, and the potential cost resulting from delays in plant production.

Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.
