This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.

The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

There are many types of deep foundations currently being used in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most common being driven precast, prestressed concrete (PC/PS) piles. PC/PS piles are frequently selected for use due to of ease of installation, availability, and relatively low cost. Disadvantages of using PC/PS piles are noise, vibrations, pollution, front-end delays due to indicator pile programs, and reduced flexibility. An acceptable alternative to driven PC/PS piles was selected for construction of foundations for the heavy housing and administrative buildings at the San Francisco County Jail #3 replacement project in San Bruno, California. The pile type selected, the Auger Pressure Grouted Displacement (APGD) pile, was chosen to reduce noise, vibrations, installation time, and cost, and to allow for greater flexibility of installed pile lengths. This paper presents a case history of the use of APGD piles that were substituted for driven PC/PS concrete piles for the subject project. Standard and quick loading pile load tests were performed to confirm adherence with the design criteria originally used for the driven PC/PS concrete piles. The APGD piles were found to increase shear strength around the piles similarly to driven displacement piles. In addition, this paper presents the methodology used in monitoring APGD pile installation.

"Over the past twenty years there has been an increased emphasis on fine grinding in the minerals industry. This spurred the development of a range of new fine grinding equipment in the 1990s. At that time, the Knelson-Deswik mill was developed in South Africa for the pigments industry.Knelson Milling Solutions currently offers a wide range of laboratory, pilot and production scale mills. These mills bridge the gap between traditional low speed vertical mills and the high speed horizontal mills (tip speed < 3 and > 15 m/s respectively). They are designed to run at tip speeds between 10 and 12 m/s and are capable of operating with very dense grinding media. The result is a power intensity that is higher than the low speed mills and overlaps that of the high speed mills. This allows the mill to be customized for a wide range of grinding applications.A case study at Aquarius Platinum’s Kroondal Mine shows that the Knelson-Deswik technology can produce a consistent product size despite feed variations. It also shows that the throughput was proportional to the slurry density at Kroondal. The case study identified increasing the slurry density as a process change that can increase throughput and reduce the specific energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing complexity and finer grain sizes of modern ore bodies have increased the importance of effective mineral liberation in obtaining acceptable grades and recoveries (Jankovic, Valery and La Rosa, 2003; Lichter and Davey, 2006; Napier-Munn, Morell, Morrison and Kojovic, 1996). This trend has increased the significance of fine grinding technology because the input energy increases exponentially as the required product size decreases from 100 to 10 microns (Gao and Weller, 1993a).The US Department of Energy recently provided the context for the potential energy savings in the US Mining Industry (BCS, 2007). They reported that grinding consumes approximately 494 TBtu/year. This was over double the consumption of the second highest equipment category, diesel materials handling systems (211 TBtu/yr). The proportion of grinding energy allocated to fine grinding can only be expected to increase as finer ore deposits are mined. It is therefore critical that fine grinding efficiency continue to improve through the selection of appropriate equipment and the development of best practices for existing applications."

The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical &quot;ladder veins&quot; of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins (&quot;floors&quot;) the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K&quot;O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood&apos;s Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the &quot;ladder vein&quot; type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or &quot;floors&quot;, some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a &quot;dyke bulge&quot; of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner&apos;s (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood&apos;s Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

O aço em estudo (SAE8620MOD) é um material utilizado na aplicação de estruturas de óleo e gás. Essa liga modificada é utilizada em estruturas off-shore para produção de amarras. Para garantir a qualidade do produto são realizadas uma série de ensaios, dentre eles propriedades mecânicas (RT, LE, Alongamento e redução de área) bem como resultados de dureza e impacto. O ensaio de impacto está relacionado diretamente com a microestrutura obtida durante o processo de solidificação do aço e com o tratamento térmico realizado. Microestruturas com alto grau de bandeamento podem comprometer a variabilidade dos resultados de impacto. A redução ou até mesmo a eliminação do bandeamento é um caso de amplo estudo, principalmente em aços com processo de lingotamento contínuo. Muitas soluções já foram propostas para a redução do bandeamento, o de agitação eletromagnética tem se mostrado bastante efetivo na redução dos níveis de bandeamento e segregação dos produtos lingotados. O ensaio consiste em avaliar a intensidade do campo eletromagnético (FEMS) para o comportamento do nível de bandeamento do material. Foi utilizada uma corrida para teste via lingotamento contínuo, onde a velocidade de lingotamento permaneceu constante e variou-se a corrente dos agitadores em três condições: tarugos com baixa agitação (FEMs com corrente baixa), tarugos com alta agitação (FEMS com corrente alta) e tarugos sem agitação (FEMS desligado). Com baixa agitação no FEMS conseguimos obter um nível de bandeamento menor se comparado com os outros resultados. Como consequência a variação dos valores de impacto apresentaram-se menores que as demais condições, devido a homogeneidade do material. Dessa forma podemos dizer que a redução do nível de bandeamento no material reduziu também a variação dos resultados de impacto, tornando o processo mais estável.

minerals of different specific gravities. It is simple in construction, easily operated, capable of treating large quantities in a short time, and highly efficient under various conditions. The question, whether the material to be jigged has first been sized, determines the two principal methods of jigging. Jigging preceded by close sizing, generally known as the Continental or German system, involves a more or less elaborate series of screens or trommels, with attendant cost for installation, operation, and repairs. Jigging without sizing, known as the English system, is, according to Munroe,1 a development of the hand-jigging formerly employed in Cornwall . and introduced by English miners to this country." In its simplest form, the method consists in jigging an ore-mixture previously crushed to some maximum size (although, in some cases, even this preliminary is omitted) oil a relatively coarse sieve, and then jigging again on a filler sieve, the material passing through the first sieve and bedding. While many modifications have been necessary to adapt it for use in mills of large capacity, where hand-work was necessarily, replaced by machines, the principle remains the same; the fact that the English system has been successfully employed, both in this country and abroad, is well known; and arguments have been made for its efficiency and applicability in a wider sphere than it has occupied hitherto. II. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS. The fact that treating a mixture of minerals under jigging conditions increased the amount of mineral saved, or, as Professor Richards aptly terms it, 1 ?the extra jig-catch," has long been known. To account for this fact a number of theories have been proposed. The work of Rittinger2 in this field has, for many years, been a classic in the literature of ore-dressing. For the purposes of my present paper, however, the work of two American investigators, Prof. H. S. Munroe and Prof. R. H. Richards, is chiefly concerned. Professor Munroe has given the results of an elaborate series of experiments,3 and his deductions, based largely oil theoretical grounds, of this work. This report reviews investigations to determine the fire hazard in coal mining when using flammable petroleum hydraulic oils to actuate mining equipment and summarizes research by the Bureau of Mines and industry on fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. Tests were established to evaluate fire resistance and the necessary characteristics to assure adequate service when fire-resistant fluids are used to replace petroleum hydraulic oils. The research was conducted in the laboratory and field trials under actual operating conditions in underground mines. Bureau of Mines Schedule 30 became effective December 17, 1959; the first approval was granted on February 18, 1960, and the twelfth was granted on March 17, 1961. The approvals include nine ready-mixed (by the producer) fluids and seven concentrates to which water is added by the user according to instructions from the producer. Seven synthetic-type fire-resistant hydraulic fluids submitted by two producers are also approved. Over 100 coal mines are now using water-in-oil emulsion-type fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in varying degrees from a trial in one machine to all the hydraulic equipment in an entire mine.

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O&#183; 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

High methane emissions originating from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying and underlying the mined coalbed can adversely affect both safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels in the longwall mining environment, gob gas ventholes have become a standard supplementary methane control option in many mines. As mines progress into deeper and gassier coalbeds, or as longwall panel size increases, ventilation and gob gas ventholes together may not be sufficient to maintain methane levels within statutory limits. To decrease the risk associated with methane emissions under these circumstances, in-seam horizontal methane drainage is often used to reduce the gas content of the coalbed prior to mining. Horizontal methane drainage borehole completion designs, drilling strategies, and degasification lead times may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions due to mine design, geology, and the gas content of the coalbed. This study investigates different horizontal methane drainage borehole patterns, borehole lengths, and degasification times prior to and during panel extraction to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing methane emissions using a "dynamic" 3D reservoir modeling of a 38 1-m wide longwall panel operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed. Results of this study showed that dual and tri-lateral boreholes are more effective in decreasing emissions and in shielding the entries compared to fewer shorter, cross-panel, horizontal boreholes parallel to the longwall face. Modeling results showed that after 12 months of pre-mining methane drainage, the average longwall face emission rates can be reduced by as much as 10.3 m3/min and 6.8 m3/min using tri- and dual-lateral boreholes, respectively. It was also shown that if pre-mining methane drainage time is short, it is important to continue methane drainage during the panel extraction to maximize reductions in longwall face emissions since additional face emission reductions achieved during this period can be comparable to pre-mining degasification.

In August 1996 Barrick Gold Corporation acquired the Pierina property, an advanced stage exploration project, high in the Andean Cordillera of Peru and in November 1998, in a record time of just over two years, poured the first gold. After more than three years of a very successful operation at some of the lowest operating costs in the world, this presentation serves to briefly describe the project through design, construction and start-up and in particular to spotlight some of the challenges that have been overcome in valley heap leaching in a high rainfall, alpine setting.

Revolutionary changes in the organization of work have far outpaced our knowledge about the implications of these changes for the quality of working life and for safety and health on the job. This gap in knowledge is one of the 21 priority areas for research under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)—a framework crafted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners to guide research into the next decade. This report was developed under NORA as the first attempt to develop a comprehensive research agenda for investigating and reducing occupational safety and health risks associated with the changing organization of work. Research and development needs identified in the agenda include (1) improved surveillance mechanisms to better track how the organization of work is changing, (2) accelerated research on safety and health implications of the changing organization of work, (3) increased research focus on organizational interventions to protect safety and health, and (4) steps to formalize and nurture organization of work as a distinctive field in occupational safety and health.

"The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

The August 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster raised national awareness of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) in Utah as well as general interest in how seismic monitoring might improve mine safety in the region. Unlike the situation in most other mining areas in the U.S., local seismographs in Utah?s Wasatch Plateau (WP) and Book Cliffs (BC) coal fields are an integral part of a modern real-time earthquake information system developed by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) as part of an Advanced National Seismic System. The UUSS earthquake catalog contains a continuous record of MIS at all active mine sites in the WP-BC region since 1978 (more than 18,000 seismic events = M 4.2). We describe characteristics of MIS and current seismic monitoring capabilities in the WP-BC region. We then demonstrate, using MIS from an example Utah coal mine, the ability to refine event locations with estimated absolute errors of ~200 m or less using a combination of (1) a double-difference relocation methodology and (2) ground truth information provided by mine operators. This approach enables sufficient spatial resolution to correlate MIS with mining activities, providing a useful tool to help improve mine safety.

As primeiras argamassas utilizadas em construções pelo homem continham em sua composição, materiais argilosos. Porém, por ser um material com muitas cargas elétricas livres, as argilas reagem constantemente com a água, ocasionando grande variação linear que acaba causando fissuração nas argamassas feitas com esse material. Assim, para solucionar esse problema, passou-se a utilizar cal hidratada no lugar dos materiais argilosos. Dessa maneira, mesmo não sendo composta por argila, a argamassa mantém sua trabalhabilidade. Nesse cenário, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo balancear estequiometricamente a cal hidratada e as argilas estudadas, para utilizar essas quantidades em argamassas para revestimento, barateando assim o material. Para encontrar esse balanceamento estequiométrico calculou-se a massa molar para um mol de cal hidratada e para um mol teórico de argila. Assim foram estipuladas algumas proporções possíveis de balanceamento da equação de reação cal+argila. Além disso, foram confeccionados corpos de prova, variando as quantidades de argila e cal, para realização de ensaios de capilaridade, a fim de comprovar a eficácia dos resultados encontrados no balanceamento teórico.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the behaviour and separation of inclusions at the interface between steel and slag. The study has been limited to liquid inclusions because they can be a potential problem in transient situations such as ladle changes in continuous casting of steel. Model experiments with water and silicon oils have been carried out to study the kinetics of separation of simulated inclusions at an interface. The properties of the inclusions and the slags have been varied by using different oils with different viscosities, densities and surface tensions. The effect of temperature of the liquids has also been examined. Measurements of the terminal velocity, rest time and the behaviour of the liquid inclusions at the interface have been recorded using a video camera. It has been found that the inclusions reach their terminal velocity early in the vessel and the experimental velocities differ somewhat from the values evaluated using ?intermediate law?. The results from the experiments have shown that the size of the inclusions has no appreciable influence on the rest time. Droplets of AK50 oil have been found to have considerably long rest time. A water film surrounding the droplet has been expected to be the main reason for the long rest time. The present study has also shown that the viscosity of the oil has certain effect on the rest time, but only to some extent, since viscosity has double functions. A higher viscosity provides higher resistance to the droplet entering the oil phase leading to longer rest time and at the same time damps the lateral movement of the droplet along the interface, leading to easier stabilization and shorter rest time. On the other hand, a high viscosity of the oil phase results in slow dissolution process. It has been concluded that a meaningful model of inclusion separation at the metal-slag interface must take the interfacial phenomena into consideration. A reliable laboratory method to characterize the response of free gold particles to flash flotation conditions has been developed. The test has been performed on free milling gold ores as well as synthetic ores, using either a gravity concentrate or gold powder as the gold source, to assess the floatability of gold particles. Trends in free gold flotation kinetics, as well as size and milling effects, were identified for gold recovery based on the different feed types, reagent dosages, and residence times. It was shown that the ultimate recoveries and kinetic trends of gold particles from the gravity concentrate could be enhanced with increased dosage of collector, potassium amyl xanthate. Interestingly, in comparison to gravity-recoverable gold, recovery from pure Au powders was better in collectorless flotation, and cumulative recovery decreased with higher levels of collector addition. Improved coarse particle recovery appeared linked to increased collector additions for both the gravity concentrate and the pure gold powders. In general, coarse gold particles demonstrated slower kinetic rates thaen the fine or intermediate components incomparable tests.
