Column flotation has been successfully implemented on a production scale in the Athabasca oil sands. In this application, bitumen is recovered and mineral matter is simultaneously rejected from a middling stream originating from a primary separation vessel. Exploiting the natural hydrophobicity of bitumen, the middlings streams have traditionally been processed utilizing conventional, mechanical flotation cells. Although these cells offer adequate bitumen recovery and mineral rejection rates, operating costs are high due to the required maintenance of the wetted mechanical components. In comparison, column flotation provides superior metallurgical performance while offering a lower maintenance demand. Both metallurgical and mechanical characteristics of column flotation are discussed to demonstrate the benefits of this technology for the recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

Focusing on relationships between severity measure versus productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive study of injuries for U.S. underground coal mines in 1996 by mine size. Based on analyses of data, generally the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour), but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). Within very large, large, and medium mine sizes, however, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r =-0.43, -0.36, and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a more deeply nested analysis is required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged by tensile strain or crushing by mining machines running over the cable. A prototype infrared detector and an infrared detector power supply that heats a shorted area by applying high current (at low voltage) and locating a short by infrared output. 3. Twelve production infrared detectors. 4. Detail drawings for all of the developed instruments.

This report summarizes a study conducted by The Service Bureau Corporation for the Bureau of Mines. Evaluations reflected herein are the result of an independent investigation by The Service Bureau Corporation of methane considerations during coal mining. The study is oriented toward a systematic analysis of methane control problems during coal mining. Throughout this study an attempt has been made to ensure considerations consistent with the recently enacted Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. References to reports by The Bureau of Mines and others are made for the purposes of establishing identification between the evaluations contained in this report and on-going research efforts.

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. The cyanidation of copper containing gold ores results in the co-dissolution of copper along with gold. Copper dissolution results in elevated cyanide consumption that may make the treatment of the gold ore uneconomic. Copper-cyanide species in gold mill effluents may increase the environmental toxicity of the gold mill solutions. The objective of this study was to examine the use of solvent extraction to recover the copper cyanide species from gold mill effluents. Solvent extraction with Cognis (formerly Henkel) reagents LIX 79 and LIX 7950 was studied. Excellent extraction of copper and cyanide was achieved using pH control in extraction. Copper and cyanide may be stripped from the reagents using basic eluants. Various routes for copper and cyanide recovery from the strip solution were studied. Excellent results were obtained using electrowinning in both divided (Nation membrane) and undivided cells. Cyanide recovery was obtained by AVR treatment of a bleed stream from electrowinning. Full results of solvent extraction, copper and cyanide recovery are reported.

Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

Os modelos constitutivos convencionais usados na engenharia de incêndio são de natureza empírica e abordam de forma dissociada os fenômenos do encruamento plástico e da fluência. Este trabalho apresenta em linhas gerais um modelo constitutivo unificado baseado fisicamente na cinética de deformação plástica resultante do deslizamento de discordâncias, encruamento e recuperação dinâmica inspirado nas contribuições de Kocks, Mecking e Estrin. O modelo proposto tem a sua estrutura matemática modificada para condições de temperatura variável, isto é, para cenários de incêndios.

A escória utilizada no refino secundário deve possuir propriedades adequadas para que auxilie no controle inclusionário dos aços. Tendo isto em vista, há vários parâmetros que devem ser levados em conta para se obter uma escória ótima que irá auxiliar na limpeza dos aços. Como uma técnica de medição, o valor de oxigênio total no banho está diretamente relacionado com o número de inclusões óxidas presentes no aço líquido. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo geral o acompanhamento da limpeza inclusionária por meio dos teores de oxigênio total presentes nos aços, para variáveis selecionadas de escória e de processo. A partir das análises químicas de amostras de um aço alto carbono acalmado ao alumínio, foram gerados gráficos com os valores de oxigênio total em função dos parâmetros %CaO/%Al2O3, %FeO+%MnO, basicidade binária, tempo de flotação na torre do lingotamento contínuo e pick-up de nitrogênio; seguido da análise dos resultados obtidos e sua comparação com os dados da literatura. Pode-se então concluir que, para as análises anteriormente citadas, o aço apresentou resultados coerentes com a literatura para todas as análises.

Employment and injury experience data for all mineral industries are given in volume III. The 1963 figures are preliminary and are subject to revision. METAL MINES Preliminary estimates for the metal-mining industry of a combined fatal and nonfatal injury-frequency rate of 32.34 per million man-hours in 1963 indicate only a slight change from the rate of 32.00 in 1962. Metal operations had 41 fatal and 3,110 nonfatal injuries during 1963.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

"The complexity of a modern flotation circuit makes it susceptible to disturbances such as changes in feed, ore mineralogy, equipment degradation, poor measurements and faulty instruments. Good measurements and a robust control system are critical to create and maintain a stable and optimum flotation process.This paper focuses on the development and implementation of process control applications in the flotation circuits at Xstrata Nickel’s Strathcona Mill ( referred to as the mill hereafter ) in Sudbury, Ontario. Following the path of ‘stabilize-improve-optimize’, basic controls to stabilize process variables such as flotation cell pulp level, air and reagent addition rates, cleaning-column feed and wash-water rates have been established. Factors such as best practice in pulp level and valve position measurement, feedforward control and the application of an appropriate control philosophy, have contributed to the significant reduction in process variability. For instance, standard deviation reduction of 79% for the Ni impurity in the column Cu concentrate grade was experienced and is shown. The variability reduction of the flotation circuits’ key process-variables paves the way to further improve and optimize flotation performance. A grams-per-metal unit reagent addition control scheme has been improved upon, particularly for different operating scenarios and better robustness. In addition, following significant stabilization of the primary controls and columns feedrates, Cu/Ni separation cleaning-column bias-control (cascaded to the wash-water rate) and hold-up control (cascaded to air flowrate) have been developed and tested. This strategy – from stabilization to optimization - is expected to achieve a more consistent control of final concentrate grades and improve recoveries.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is considered the most important and value-added process in the milling metallurgical plant and is still undergoing continuous evolution to treat greater tonnage and different ores (Wills, 2006). Starting over three decades ago, with the advent of on-line slurry content analysis devices, flotation automatic control has received persistent interest and a large number of applications have been reported (Thwaites, 1983, 1986 ; Mckee, 1991). Bergh and Yianatos (2011) reviewed different aspects of process control in flotation circuits and have evaluated the applicability of model predictive control to the process. Mckee (1991) analyzed the difficulty in developing lasting/robust process control applications for flotation circuits and stated that the path of stabilization-refinement-optimization would more likely lead to successful flotation circuit process control. Best practice on column process control was discussed by Bouchard, etc. where a multi-layered approach was proposed, provided that the measurement of column process variables ( i.e. bias, froth depth, hold-up, etc. ) are measured reliably (Bouchard & Thwaites, 2008). Wills (2006) stated that the best practice for flotation automatic control starts with fulfilling basic control objectives, such as stabilized flotation cell level, air flow, pH, reagent flow etc., before considering more advanced, or even optimal, control of metallurgical targets, which are more closely linked to economic performance."

Multiple agencies in Southern California are retrofitting and upgrading their levees to catch up with ever-advancing urbanization affecting the requirements for existing channels and levees in this seismically active zone. Pressed-in sheet piles have been specified on some of these projects to minimize noise and vibration problems associated with sheet pile installation. This paper will study three Southern California levee and sewer pipeline retrofit projects that utilized pressed-in sheet piles in hard soil conditions with N-values higher than 50. BACKGROUND Southern California is home to numerous drainage channels fortified with earthen levees. In spite of the region’s semi-arid climate with varying annual precipitation from year to year, winter storms can bring in heavy and continuous rainfall to the area which overwhelms the levees’ capacities at times. Some levees are running through densely populated areas with homes and other sensitive structures such as underground utilities and bridge piers. Conventional sheet pile driving utilizes either percussive or vibratory pile driving methods, both of which generate high levels of noise and vibration, causing nuisance and potential damage to nearby structures. On the other hand, the press-in piling method utilizes a hydraulic force to push piles into the ground, thus practically eliminating the noise and vibration issue. Although there are types of press-in piling systems mounted on tall leaders on large crawler-base machines, they are less frequently used due to its much larger size and more limited drivability than the type discussed hereunder. The other type of press-in machine sits on top of already installed piles and is anchored with its own weight and additional counter weight when starting off as shown in Figure 1. Once the first few piles are pressed in, the equipment grips on top of the installed piles and moves forward on its own as the pile installation progresses. See Figure 2. This method does not use a vibratory or percussive force to install piles.

The purpose of this paper is to establish a qualitative method to estimate the risk level (e.g. rating and ranking) resulting from mining activity. Risk is the product of two factors: probability of failure and cost of consequences. A resultant assessment scale matrix is then used to assign a risk index value which is directly proportional to the potential for excavation instability. A case study, the No. 1 Shear East orebody at Vale?s Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario will be examined. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) is presented for a mine development intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The developed assessment scale matrix is used to estimate risk index for intersection (2981) located on 5000 level. The results are presented and categorized with respect to risk-index value, probability of instability, cost of consequence, and mining stage.

Beginning from the point of view that process control of ore flotation can be approached by on-line analysis of processing behavior, an equation was developed which has characteristics useful for a multi-variable feedback loop. The application of this equation to optimizing control with a data acquisition system will be discussed in Part 11. OBJECTIVE OF CONTROL The purpose of developing a feedback method for concentrator control is to provide a means for determining ore processing behavior in order that data describing the ore can be used to make appropriate changes in control conditions while the ore continues to flow through the flotation circuit. In absence of simple linear relationships between pairs of variables in the flotation process, attention is directed to the need for a generalized relationship which possibly would incorporate all pertinent variables. It would be possible to apply such an equation to the control of variables in a concentrator in real time according to operational requirements as ore gradually changes in quality and processing behavior. To meet this objective, it is necessary to define relationships describing flotation performance in terms of performance variables capable of being measured on-line, either with on-line instruments and analyzers or with manual methods lending themselves to quick determination of meaningful information. Relationships derived to meet this objective form a model for the flotation process. The evaluation of flotation parameters of the ore and the execution of control on the basis of the derived information while the ore is continuing through the process would constitute a feedback control system. Data for the following control and performance variables can be made available: 1) ore feed rate, 2) collector addition rate, 3) lime addition rate, 4) pulp density, 5) assay or multiple assays in feed, tails, or concentrate sufficient for material balancing, 6) particle size distribution in flotation feed, 7) froth height, and 8) frother addition rate. Other process variables, such as flotation air input and mechanical agitation intensity, are usually not considered as control variables and were not taken into account in this analysis. Other data, such as that describing the ore, would be useful for concentrator process control. However, information of this type (such as ore hardness, grain size of the mineral, chemical species of the mineral, and ore surface properties) being not presently measurable in the on-line sense, has the effect of causing disturbances in the system which can be detected only indirectly. The process control system being sought must recognize disturbances by their effect on measured performance followed by determining control changes to compensate for them in meeting the objectives of improved performance (perhaps higher throughput, maximum return, etc.). A suitable model for the process having capability of recognizing the effects of ore disturbances should provide the means for introducing proper compensation through control changes. This would be done by processing on-line data with the model to calculate coefficients reflecting ore characteristics. This procedure can only be applied in a typical flotation system when on-line data can be processed at faster rates than the usual rate at which the ore in flotation feed takes on significantly different characteristics. For example, material balance data can be accumulated in approximately 5-min intervals using on-line X-ray fluorescence analysis. The flotation system time constant might be 15 min including grinding. Ore changes having time constants longer than 1 hr could be accommodated using on-line feedback control by this procedure. The Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd at Nchanga was commissioned in 1974 as the world's first largest successfully operated agitation leach SX-EW plant for copper production. The design, development and operation of the plant soon after commissioning termed as TLP stage II has been described by Holmes et al (1). In the initial phase the plant was designed to treat approximately 25,000 tonnes per day of current flotation tailings from the Nchanga Concentrator operations, and had a design capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper. Further expansion took place in 1986, and TLP stage III was successfully commissioned to treat an additional 20,000 -25,000 tonnes per day of large reserves (over 135m tonnes) of reclaimed tailings stockpiled since the early 1930's in four paddock type tailings dams (T01 to T04). The salient feature of TLP stage III expansion described by S K Mwenechanya et al (2 -3) was the installation of the world's largest Horizontal Belt Filter Plant with 26 filters each of 80 m2 filtration area.
