In 1994 the world's largest underwater tunnel was constructed to link Canada and the U.S.A. This new tunnel was large enough to accommodate double-decker railway cars. The construction of an unplanned Retrieval Shaft was required to allow removal and servicing of the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine before it passed under the St. Clair River. This paper, which is a revision of that published in Canadian Tunnelling, has been modified here to emphasize construction considerations and describes the evolution of the design and construction of this "Rescue Shaft" under extreme schedule pressure, and changed ground conditions..

San Diego’s Stadium Conglomerate consists of poorly cemented cobbles, gravel, sand, silt and clay. Conventional laboratory and in-situ testing is not suitable for characterizing its engineering properties. Although the formation is often considered a “rock” its behavior is more readily modeled using soil mechanics. Static and seismic design of a tunnel for the Mission Valley East light rail extension required that the stress-strain characteristics of the ground be identified over a broad strain range. Geophysical methods and field plate load testing were used to develop a full non-linear stress-strain model of the expected ground behavior. Quantification of the coarse material distribution was also required for selection of tunneling methods and construction considerations.

The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. The new mining method of multiple strata blasting, called StratablastTM, is described in a separate paper presented at this conference. The current paper presents three case studies where the technique was implemented in three different configurations in large-scale blasts in Australia. The first two blasts were in the Hunter Valley of NSW while the third was at Ensham Mine in Central Queensland. All blasts comprised multiple layers that were blasted in a single drill and blast cycle, with unique designs applied to each layer to achieve different blast outcomes from the various layers.

"INTRODUCTION Of the phosphate rock deposits of the United States that are being exploited actively at present, the land-pebble area in Florida is the largest producer. In recent years the land-pebble district, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties, has produced about 80 per cent of the raw phosphate rock that has supplied the requirements of the several national industries based on this essential commodity.In the land-pebble deposits sizes finer than 16 to 22 mesh are below the commercial limit in phosphate content, and washing-plant practice has been directed to the recovery of the coarser material. Recently, more extensive control of the washery plan has resulted in the saving of additional amounts of phosphate, the loss of which had been considered unavoidable. However, strict requirements of the trade regarding the lowest acceptable grade of phosphate rock prevent the inclusion of more than a very small proportion of the low-grade phosphatic sands with the washery output of phosphate roe:. Further advances in practice resulting in larger recoveries of phosphate can only be effected by the application of processes that are based on other principles than merely a difference of particle size. Research is be conducted actively along these lines by the industry and by cooperating agencies.Flotation has been studied for several years by the International Agricultural Corporation and its allied company, the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

El proyecto Antakori (Regulus Resources Inc.) está ubicado a 53 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Cajamarca en el distrito minero de Hualgayoc y es parte de la cuenca de los depósitos de Cu-Au-Ag del Mioceno del norte del Perú. Tiene un recurso indicado de 250 Mt con 0.48% de Cu, 0.29 g/t de Au y 7.5 g/t de Ag y un recurso inferido de 267 Mt con 0.41% Cu, 0.26 g/t de Au y 7.8 g/t de Ag (Eggleston et al., 2019). La geología consiste en un basamento cretácico de rocas sedimentarias (formaciones Farrat, Inca y Chulec) intruído por varios diques de pórfido que generan alteración y mineralización tipo skarn con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag y cuerpos de sulfuros masivos. Posteriormente, se desarrolla un sistema tipo pórfido asociado a diques de pórfido cuarzo-feldespato-(biotita) y cuerpos de brechas con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag-(Mo). Sobre las secuencias sedimentarias se depositan rocas volcánicas del Mioceno procedentes del centro volcánico Tantahuatay y son intruídas por diques/stocks subvolcánicos, ambos afectados por una fuerte alteración argílica avanzada con mineralización epitermal de sulfuración alta de pirita-enargita con Cu-Au-Ag-As-Sb. Un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia con mineralización tipo “Carbonate-Base Metal” de Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu, asociado a diques, de pórfido hornblendico constituye el último evento de mineralización en el proyecto Antakori.

Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.

Deep cover retreat mining (overburden in excess of 750 ft) is an important emerging issue which will intensify in the future as the more easily mined shallow seam reserves are depleted. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics indicates that deep cover pillar recovery accounts for a disproportionate share of the underground coal mine roof/rib fall fatalities and injuries. Past research has shown that previously recommended Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) stability factors (SF’s) may be excessive for deep cover pillar design. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the various methods and strategies by which panels, production pillars and barrier pillars are developed and extracted under deep cover, and to develop appropriate design guidelines. In the course of the research, 29 mines in 7 states were investigated to collect panel design case histories. At each mine site, underground geotechnical data were collected on the pillar line in order to document roof rock, coalbed and floor conditions. The analyses indicated that squeezes were the most likely failure mode where the depth was less than 1,250 ft, but bumps predominated in the deeper cover cases. Immediate roof rock quality, the ARMPS SF’s, and barrier pillar stability factors were all found to be important parameters in determining the outcomes of the case histories. Design guidelines, including suggestions for barrier pillars to isolate active panels from nearby gobs in bump prone ground, are also proposed.

A series of full scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests was carried out with a long bladed single disc cutter (292 mm diameter, 11mm wide constant cross-section blade) on dry and water saturated sandstone blocks using a linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). The muck collected from the cutting tests has been analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. Coarseness index (CI), a non dimensional parameter, has been found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n is observed between SE and CI with very high CI usually corresponding with the lowest values of SE. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock tests is much less than the values found in the previous studies using constant cross section disc cutters and is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI is found to be lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time saturated rock cutting is found to be less energy intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

Replacement of an aging twin span river crossing in Vermont required a temporary bridge to accommodate traffic during construction. Soils beneath the temporary approach embankment consisted of very soft organic clayey silt underlain by interbedded, loose alluvial fine sand and silt/clayey silt. Reinforcement was required for the southern temporary approach embankment to limit settlement and to increase global stability factors of safety. A ground improvement design was developed using Rammed Aggregate Pier® reinforcement and was included in the contract documents as an FHWA Category II Experimental Feature. Instrumentation intended to document the performance of the supported embankment was installed. Piers were then constructed and monitoring commenced as embankment and bridge construction occurred. Weekly instrumentation data reports indicated continuing excess pore water pressure, settlement, and lateral deformation of the subgrade soils as the embankment and temporary bridge abutment was constructed. In response to the unanticipated monitoring results, further investigation indicated that significant deviations from the conditions and basis upon which the ground support design was developed were made during construction. This paper discusses these deviations and their specific impacts to embankment support performance, how these deviations occurred, the role that the ground support system played in maintaining global stability, measures taken to limit further detrimental impacts to the embankment, and provides recommendations for contract document preparation and construction oversight to prevent similar situations from occurring on future projects.

The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as diferentes microestruturas do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 obtidas pelo processo de soldagem Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). As regiões do metal base, zona fundida e zona afetada pelo calor foram investigadas nos corpos de prova com diferentes aportes térmicos. As microestruturas obtidas foram caracterizadas utilizando-se a microscopia óptica (MO). As imagens de Mo obtidas na zona afetada pelo calor mostram que a fração de austenita aumentou com o aumento do aporte térmico. Este aumento está relacionado ao alto teor de cromo e molibdênio presentes no metal de adição utilizado na soldagem. Na zona fundida, a fração de austenita de widmansttaten foi observada com maior frequência na microestrutura do corpo de prova soldado com o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm. Essa maior fração de austenita de widmansttaten observada para o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm está relacionada com o maior tempo de permanência em altas temperaturas deste corpo de prova em relação aos outros corpos de prova investigados. Vale ressaltar que a adição de nitrogênio também promove a formação desta fase. De modo geral, os resultados da metalografia quantitativa mostram que a porcentagem de ferrita foi superior a 65% nas zonas termicamente afetadas e fundidas.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. This final report describes the work performed by Gulton Battery Corporation under USBM Contract No. HO-112033, entitled "Research and Development on Lithium-Nickel Fluoride Batteries For Mint Life Support Equipment". The lithium-nickel fluoride couple was chosen For this investigation because of its high theoretical energy density (626 Wh/lb), its ability to operate at ambient temperatures and the fact that it showed promise as a secondary system. The theoretical energy density of the lithium-nickel fluoride couple is ten times greater than that of the widely used lead-acid battery and three times greater than the silver-zinc battery which has the highest theoretical energy density of the commercially available secondary systems. The experimental program first evaluated the cell components individually. The results of these studies then formed the basis for investigations of cell performance using experimental three-plate cells. These cells consisted of one nickel-fluoride and two lithium electrodes. All work was performed in a glove box under an argon atmosphere which was sufficiently pure to maintain the shiny appearance on freshly prepared lithium surfaces. The major portion of the work effort was concerned with the nickel fluoride electrode. Binder, conductive diluent, fabrication technique, as well as the nickel fluoride active material itself, were considered. Criteria for binder materials were established and six classes of materials encompassing thirteen binders were evaluated. The candidate materials were initially screened for appropriate chemical and physical properties and finally evaluated in three.-plate cells, Two epoxy powders emerged as the most promising binders. Two types of conductive diluent were evaluated. The first is a carbon black of low bulk density and high surface area. This material is a good conductive diluent; however, electrodes fabricated with it lacked good mechanical strength. It was hypothesized that a uni¬form, small particle size, low specific surface area would improve the mechanical properties of the electrodes. Therefore, two samples of graphicic materials, milled to uniform powders in the one-to-ten micron range were evaluated. Electrodes prepared with the graphitic materials had superior mechanical properties, However, their electrical performance was significantly poorer and voltage losses of 0.2 to 0.3 volts were observed. Several electrolyte solutions were evaluated. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone was tested but found to be incompatible in the presence of lithium. Lithium perchlorate, lithium hexafluoroarsenate, and lithium bromide were tested as two-component electrolytes in propylene carbonate solvent and their performance compared with that of the single electrolyte solutions, Lithium perchlorate gave the best performance. Lithium hexafluoroarsenate was also evaluated in methyl formate and appears to give equivalent performance. The lithium perchlorate-propylene carbonate system is preferred as it is easier to handle and less expensive.

A common type of deep foundation used in Norway to support bridge structures is the drilled pipe piles (piles) filled with concrete reinforcement after installation. The standard installation practice is the use of down-hole hammers. Complex geology and difficult subsoil conditions in Norway causes a high variability of soil and rock layers which in turn make for differences between actual subsurface conditions and those expected from geotechnical exploratory borings. This situation is strongly noted when the foundations are not fully socketed, and the rock layer is sloped. In this particular case, special testing procedures are required to assess the drilled pile base material and evaluate the rock-socket to ensure full contact between the foundation base and the rock surface. The local standard practice to verify the latter condition, consists of coring and visually evaluating the material recovered at the bottom of the drilled pile. This paper presents a case where the coring and visual inspection were not possible and alternatively the geological material encountered at the base of the deep foundations was evaluated using force-displacement measurements. Two 1016-mm (40in) diameter open-end drilled piles identified as P02-04 and P02-05 were tested and evaluated using in-situ force-displacement data prior to filling the piles with concrete. Test results showed an average displacement of 7mm (0.28in) corresponding to 35MPa (5.1ksi) stress level for P02-04, and 7.2mm (0.28in) corresponding to a stress level of 38MPa (5.5ksi). Based on testing results, both drilled piles were within the established material assessment criterion presented by the local authorities. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study in Norway where the material encountered at the base of an open- end drilled pipe pile (pile) was evaluated using force-displacement data. In the deep foundation industry in Norway, it is a common practice to install piles to support transportation structures. Once the piles reach the embedment elevation, and the pile base is assessed, these are filled with concrete. In projects where sloping rock is the supporting layer, and all nominal loads are supported by the pile base resistance, assessing the material encountered at the pile base to ensure full contact with the rock becomes critical. The local practice to make this assessment consists of the use of weighted tape, coring, or inspection cameras. However, similar to any other testing and evaluation methods, these come with their own limitations. The variability associated with the use of the weighted tape, accessibility for the coring equipment to complete a coring process, or the conditions at the foundation base such as murky water or thick drilling fluids could significantly impact the photo or video quality taken at the pile base. In such conditions, it is important to consider alternate testing methods to evaluate the material at the foundation base.
