Mining is an inherently risky business; from the technical, environmental, social, and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration prospect to a viable project to the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine. Since we cannot totally escape the risk and uncertainty related to resource projects, as an industry we should improve our presentation of the upside and downside risks in the context of the project?s development path and maturity. More transparent, consistent, and balanced views of technical confidence will better inform both internal and external stakeholders about the expected risk in the project. International reporting codes set out the minimum standards, recommendations, and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. However, the reporting code principles of transparency and materiality are largely subject to the interpretation of the competent person(s), which may introduce a degree of subjectivity in reporting, particularly the level of disclosure regarding supporting information. It is fundamental that Mineral Resources, Mineral Reserves, and study outcomes are reported so as to unambiguously present the level of inherent technical uncertainty (or confidence) in a project, while conveying a balanced view of the opportunities a project presents. Reporting needs to consider various stakeholders who may rely on this information, and present the data in the context of the changing risk profile associated with project development paths and project maturity. This paper discusses the interdependence of resource-to-reserve conversion, the consideration of various technical-economic study types, and the level of confidence conveyed to stakeholders relying on these technical reports and other company public announcements.

A survey showed that there were 24 bin-related fatalities in the 5 year period of 1975 to 1979 in the minerals industry. Only 4 victims wore safety belts and only 1 of these had a second person attending his lifeline, as mandated by Federal safety regulations. Not one victim observed the three main Federal safety regulations governing work in and around bins. A study was conducted on the force necessary to pull victims partially buried in sand and limestone. Recommendations are made on procedures and safety equipment that can minimize bin-related accidents. A Handbook, directed to the plant engineer responsible for bin design and safety, was also issued detailing bin designs and flow-aid accessories as a function of the flowability of the stored material to better maintain material flow from bins. A comprehensive table of the flowability of many materials produced in the minerals industry is presented and simple procedures given for determining the flowability of materials if not available.

O refino de grão da estrutura bruta de solidificação da liga Cu-30%Zn (latão 70/30) a partir de adições de P e Zr ao banho líquido foi investigado utilizando-se microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica e microanálises. Foram conduzidas medidas de tamanho médio de grão pelos métodos planimétrico e do intercepto linear e foram realizadas microanálises por espectroscopia de dispersão de energia (EDS) e de comprimento de onda (WDS). Nas amostras obtidas observa-se que, quando são adicionados P e Zr, sempre ocorre a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão em relação àquele das amostras onde apenas P é adicionado. O menor tamanho médio (? 200 ?m) ocorre para um teor de 0,16% de Zr. O refino de grão coincide com a formação de precipitados geralmente facetados, contendo Zr e P em uma proporção equivalente à da fase ZrP. Sugere-se que as adições causaram a formação de partículas sólidas de ZrP, sobre as quais ocorreu a nucleação heterogênea de grãos da fase Cu-?, resultando no refino de grão.

The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. The ability to recognize visual cues commonly associated with roof and rib hazards is fundamental to the prevention of groundfall accidents. The perceptual skills that miners possess to visually search and assess hazardous ground conditions differ considerably. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes recent investigations on the use of stereoscopic (3-D) slides as a training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize the various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that cause ground-falls. The feasibility of using 3-D slides for training and their effectiveness for representing roof and rib hazard conditions are discussed. Information is presented on equipment and procedures for creating a 3-D slide program that can be updated by mine trainers. Recommendations are made on selection of 3-D equipment and on the use of 3-D slides for training miners to recognize roof and rib hazards.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. "Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are at a “plateau” and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas Refinery disaster, organizations that have “exemplary” safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters, the BP’s Deepwater Horizon Rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Looking into the causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset, or its culture? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since1995, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions of near zero organizations (NZO) that suffered unexpected disasters, based on extensive research by the author. More recently, the massive West Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, and the Train Disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada underlined the same trends. Organizations may experience calamities not because they are bad, or unsafe, but because they have become “cult-like”. INTRODUCTION The train disaster of 6 July 2013, in the small town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec, Canada, in which 47 people were killed, had many strange pre-cursorsso-called “black swan” events that have occurred in many different industries. Black swan events are so rare, that there is almost zero chance that they will ever occur again, but they are so calamitous that the responses to these are emotional and irrational, (but necessary) and in those responses, the seeds for other, different black swan events are put into place. It is not what we don’t do, or do wrong, that causes modern disasters, it is what we do. The same things in the culture that make us successful, may also cause the disasters. We slowly, incrementally and insidiously ‘float’ into disaster. One such Black Swan event: The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster, killing 167 men in the North Sea on the 6 September 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry."

The extraction and processing of mineral resources may be accompanied by environmental impacts. In spite of technological advancements, the enormous increase in production volumes within the last decades has induced sizeable environmental impacts along the life-cycle of products. Beside environmental impacts, social issues associated with mining need to be considered to ensure the social acceptability of mining activities. The project EO-MINERS aims at deploying Earth Observation (EO) tools to inform best practices in mining and to thus assist the global mineral resources industries in their transition to sustainable development. In order to facilitate the handling of complex sets of information requirements from a wide variety of stakeholders, a set of indicators was developed that will inform the process of EO tool and services development. The project strives to enable stakeholders outside the industry to meaningfully participate in decision-finding processes on mining-related issues by developing and providing EO products and services that fit the information requirements. The project has identified a wide range of such information requirements by stakeholders that could be potentially provided by EO tools. The applicability of the EO tools on the local level is tested on three mining sites.

Unverified reports of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in gold placers and radioactive mineral prospects in the Zane Hills were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as part of the Alaska critical minerals program. REE is reported to occur in dredge concentrates at the Hogatza mine and up to 1.2 pct REE was previously analyzed in alkalic syenite (bostonite) dikes marginal to the pluton. In addition, numerous thorium-rich veins, explored for their uranium content but unevaluated for REE, occur on the western margin of the Zane Hills. The Bureau mapped and sampled all of the reported or suspected REE occurrences. Dredge concentrates contain abundant uranothorianite, a mineral species which incorporates cerium subgroup REE. Bostonite dikes occur in conjunction with a multi-phased zoned alkalic intrusion, however, no significant REE concentrations were found. Thorium-rich veins contain nil to 0.5 pct Y but resource potential is limited by this relatively low grade, the ultimate low tonnage potential, and the lack of uranium as a major economic element. The Zane Hills exhibit attractive exploration targets for uranium deposits, primarily in a sedimentary form. Gold may be found peripheral to the pluton in both placer and lode deposits. Resource potential of REE, however, appears limited to a placer by-product of REE-Zr-Ti that is recoverable only during large scale gold placer mining. Placer exploration of the lower Wheeler and Dakli Creeks is suggested.

Roof warning signals were studied in 18 mines covering 5 coal seams. The results of this study confirmed that roof talk must be interpreted for each individual mine after all other conditions are present that indicate danger of roof fall. Characteristics of roof talk pulses were studied to ascertain features used in interpretation. Roof talk pulse decay time was found to be typically 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on the dimensions of the entires. Time between roof talk pulses was found to correlate inversely with the degree of danger under certain conditions. Roof talk and machinery noise recordings obtained during this study were used for subjective tests of ear protectors in a simulated coal mine noise environment. These tests required a detailed interpretation of roof talk and yielded results with high statistical power. Results of these tests showed that the use of personal ear protectors in high noise levels does not degrade a miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk. A training course was developed to encourage coal miners to pro-tect their hearing by proper use of personal hearing protectors.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal sluny taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

O presente trabalho apresenta a importância do pré-tratamento da superfície da carroceria automotiva e a aplicação do antioxidante para a qualidade do produto final, realizando uma análise dos defeitos gerados por falhas no processo e propondo, se possível, melhorias. O estudo foi realizado em uma empresa automotiva com o foco na fase final do processo descrito acima, onde foi realizada a análise dos dados coletados no período de janeiro a março de 2016. A fim de identificar os principais problemas de falta de camada da cataforese, verificou-se a necessidade do uso de ferramentas de controle para detectar sua causa raiz e encontrou um desvio no pH causado por bactéria no banho. Neste trabalho, verificou-se que a utilização de ferramentas de controle possibilitam a rápida identificação e correção de desvios.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

This report gives the results of mineralogical research on the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel ores and plant products. These studies were made under a cooperative agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) of the U. S. Government. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain fundamental data that would be useful to other GSA contractors concerned with the Nicaro ores in their research on reduction roasting, leaching, and other phases of the project; and to the metallurgical staff of the Nicaro plant in Cuba. The overall objective of the combined research was to provide data to accomplish metallurgical improvement in the operations of the U.S. Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the recovery of nickel from the ores and on the possibility of recovering other valuable constituents, especially cobalt. This study presents the physical and chemical characteristics, mineral associations, differential thermal analyses in controlled atmospheres, and X-ray studies of the ores and plant products. The nickel ores, serpentine and laterite, were from the Ramona-Lama Mulo and Ramona ore deposits. Serpentine ore consisted of serpentine-group minerals, basic iron oxide, magnetic iron oxides, chromite, olivine, enstatite, anthophyllite, cryptocrystalline quartz, wad, and a trace of calcite. This ore contained 1.6 percent nickel, 0.05 percent cobalt, 0.86 percent chromium, and 17.4 percent iron. Laterite are was composed principally of goethite with some altered serpentine, quartz, chromite, wad, magnetite, maghemite, and hematite. It carried 1.3 percent nickel, 0.11 percent cobalt, 1.9 percent chromium, and 48.4 percent iron.

"The nickel ores of Sudbury contain substantial amounts of the gangue mineral pyrrhotite (Fe7S&) which causes certain diflculties in the milling of these ores. This paper proposes a process called “magnetoflotation” as an effective means of dealing with pyrrhotite. The method reduces the pyrrhotite content of concentrates by applying a magneticjield on the path product as it leaves the flotation cell.Successful performance of magnetoflotation requires the optimization of several variables. In this study, three of the variables (air flowrate, collector concentration, pother concentration) were investigated by Box- Wilson experimental design, and others (magnet speed, grind size, pulp density, flotation time) were examined individually. The process was tested on a Falconbridge nickel ore, assaying 1.92% Ni, and under the best operating conditions, a concentrate was obtained with 13.56% Ni grade and 74.32% recovery in a single step. Further improvements to grade and recovery were possible by cleaning and scavenging. The same ore was also tested with conventional methods for comparison, and results indicated that magnetoflotation performed better.INTRODUCTION“Magnetoflotation” refers to the process of carrying out magnetic separation and flotation simultaneously within the same device, and is intended to prevent magnetic minerals from reporting to the froth products while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. Typical cases where this method might be beneficial include the processing of magnetite and nickel ores. Its use on magnetite ores has been reported elsewhere [Yalcin, 1992; Yalcin, 19931. This paper describes its application to nickel ores, more specifically to the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury."

A indústria de máquinas e equipamentos hidráulicos está manufaturando produtos com tolerâncias de ajustes dimensionais cada vez menores, visando o prolongamento da vida útil e o alto rendimento de tais componentes. Nesta perspectiva, é notória a necessidade de identificar as principais fontes de contaminação existentes nos fluidos hidráulicos, a fim de controla-los. A partir da coleta de amostras de um óleo hidráulico que passa por uma filtragem nominal e de um óleo hidráulico que passa por um processo de filtração absoluta, foi realizada a contagem de partículas, análise por fluorescência de raios-x, análise microscópica ótica e análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, para estas amostras. Com base nas análises realizadas, foi possível constatar a importância do processo de filtragem absoluta na redução dos níveis de contaminação do óleo hidráulico.
