Load testing is important for controlling the quality of piled foundations. The Statnamic test is an alternative to existing testing methods with a load duration that lies between that for static and dynamic tests. Current methods of analysis offer excellent correlation between static and Statnamic tests for coarse-grained soils but often over-predict the capacity for fine-grained soils. Thus a calibration chamber is being used to produce instrumented beds of clay with reproducible properties. A model pile placed in the beds can be loaded at varying rates using a computer controlled servo-hydraulic system. Results from the modelling will be used to improve methods of analysis and govern the design of a full-scale study. Initial results suggest the rate effect can be represented by a power law relating pile velocity and resistance. Statnamic loading of the model pile produced large negative pore pressures in the clay bed.

The objective of Contract J0295041 was to determine if the addition of a surfactant (wetting agent) to the water used for dust control in underground coal mines results in the reduction of airborne dust. Laboratory wettability tests, including the capillary rise test, a coal dust sinking test and zeta potential measurements, were used to select a coal seam/surfactant combination for in-mine testing. Four surfactants were selected for underground testing: Surfynol 465, Aerosol MA-80, DC-13, and Dustallay. The underground tests in the Lower Kittanning seam, Indiana County, PA, involved a Wilcox Mark 20 auger mining system, equipped with spray nozzles located on the cutting augers, Conflow venturi sprays, and a spray manifold. Respirable dust samples were provided by MSA Model G personal samplers and Simslin II instantaneous dust monitor; total airborne dust samples were provided by MSA Model G samplers with UNICO filter cassettes. Based on data obtained from 24 test periods surfactants, as compared to plain water, reduced the airborne respirable dust an average of 27 percent and total airborne dust an average of 36 percent.

A complex network approach on a rough fracture is developed. In this manner, some hidden metric spaces (similarity measurements) between apertures profiles are set up and a general evolutionary network in two directions (in parallel and perpendicular to the shear direction) is constructed. Also, an algorithm (COmplex Networks on Apertures: CONA) is proposed in which evolving of a network is accomplished using preferential detachments and attachments of edges (based on a competition and game manner) while the number of nodes is fixed. Also, evolving of clustering coefficients and number of edges display similar patterns as well as are appeared in shear stress, hydraulic conductivity and dilation changes, which can be engaged to estimate shear strength distribution of asperities.

The Coeur d'Alene minim, district of Shoshone County, Idaho, has been one of the largest and most active lead-silver producing districts in the United States for the last 40 years. The mines of the district enjoy exceptional natural advantages with respect to ventilation in that the veins apex high on mountain sides and are most often developed to considerable depths, up to 2,000 feet, by adit and crosscut tunnels under conditions that develop large natural draft pressures; the increase of temperature of the rock with increase of depth from surface in at a low rate; and the average surface temperatures are low. These natural conditions have, in the main, resulted in well-ventilated mines with low temperature conditions throughout. However, where the development has been carried to considerable depths below the lowest level of surface entry, natural-draft ventilation has proved inadequate, and mechanical ventilation systems have been installed on the three largest mines of the district. Local conditions, more particularly those in dead-ended working places, have also required auxiliary ventilation by will fan-pipe units in these and other mines. A particular feature of the district is the number of exceptionally long crosscut tunnels that have been driven to provide entry to vein systems from low points adjacent to milling and transporta¬tion facilities. Three of these tunnels are approximately 2 miles long, and lengths of 3,000 to 8,000 feet are quite common.

"As part of an investigation into flotation modelling of industrial scale operations, Falconbridge Ltd organised a “blind” test of the SUPASIM flotation model developed by Eurus Mineral Consultants (EMC). Two sets of rougher rate data, a flowsheet and the number and size of cells in the rougher bank were supplied from a plant that had been previously surveyed in November 2003. The name of the plant, cleaner circuit details and circuit mass balance were, at the time, unknown to EMC. With only these data, flotation performance was simulated and the cleaner circuit sizedFalconbridge then compared predicted and actual float performance and mass balance and found that final concentrate recovery and mass and circuit cell volume matched closely. Simulated recoveries relative to actual were +0.4% Cu, +0.1% Ni and -0.7% Co. However, prediction of metal distribution in the internal streams making up the various circulating loads showed some sizeable errors. On this initial success, the trial was extended and additional float test data for rougher feed, cleaner feed and cleaner scavenger feed was generated on site in April 2005. Further simulations significantly improved prediction accuracy for metal distribution in the internal streams. The average difference between predicted and actual recovery for all streams was reduced from 10.5% to 0.4%. This updated simulation was then used to ascertain the impact on final recovery, grade and plant circulating loads of increasing feed tonnage from 114 to 150t/hr. A number of scenarios were simulated in order to understand the contribution that (a) the fast and slow floating fractions and (b) regrinding of cleaner tailings are making to overall plant recovery.Simulation was then used to determine how much the flotation kinetics of both rougher feed and cleaner scavenger feed have to increase in order to deliver a 1.5% improvement in overall plant recovery. These improved kinetic values provide a target for laboratory testwork and operating conditions can be varied to determine how best to achieve these new values of fraction and rate."

The ventilation conditions at the underground coal mines are influenced; first: by the disturbances of the natural nature (barometric pressure, methane liberation, etc.), and second: by the disturbances caused by the production process. The major goal of this study was to determine the changes of the ventilation parameters, such as the flow, pressure and methane concentration around the longwall panel, particularly, along the longwall face due to the shearer operation (motion). It is well known from the practice, that the movement of the shearer influences the ventilation parameters around the longwall panel, including the gob area. Until now, these data were gathered in a single or multiple locations at the different time. However, only the simultaneous measurements of all of these values allow seeing the time dependent interrelationships between measured parameters. To be able to show these interrelationships, special experiments, described in this paper, were carried out by the author. These experiments were prepared and executed at the BUDRYK Coal Mine in Poland. During each experiment a simultaneous measurements and monitoring of the barometric pressure, air velocity and methane concentration at the different locations along the longwall face, were performed. The investigation was possible by using a special setup of instruments with a short sampling time, i.e., within 2 seconds. The monitoring of the absolute pressure was conducted by using the digital barometer µBar, developed by EMAG, based on the SETRA pressure transducer, model 470. The velocity of air was measured using the electronic vane-anemometers, developed by IMG-PAN. The methane concentrations were measured using methanometers as the part of the EMAG automatic gas monitoring system. The investigation data confirmed that disturbances due to the operation (motion) of the shearer at the longwall face have a local character. It could be also seen that a large diameter shearer (compared to the total cross-section area available for the air flow) is acting as the piston compressing the air (the overpressure) ahead of the shearer. This fact affects the methane mixing process and flow patterns in the vicinity.

"Buzwagi Gold Mine (BGM) is operated by Acacia Mining and located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of central Tanzania. The mine treats a sulphide copper-gold ore to produce gold in form of doré bars and a concentrate containing gold, copper and silver. The BGM comminution circuit includes a primary crushing stage with a gyratory crusher and two grinding circuits using a Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and a ball mill. Currently, the grinding circuits are inefficient in achieving the aspired product fineness of xP,80 = 125 µm even at low to normal throughputs (450-600 t/h). An optimization study of the circuit performance was conducted to improve product fineness through circuit surveys, experimental lab work and simulations. The analysis of survey data revealed inefficient grinding operation characterized by ball mill product (xP,80 > 400 µm) coarser than designed and higher hydrocyclone cut sizes (xT > 200 µm), too. In MODSIM several options were simulated such as reduction of vortex finder and apex diameters, reduction of SAG screen aperture, and modification of cyclone feed density. An improvement of product fineness could be achieved by simulation of the cumulative changes but it was also concluded that the current equipment cannot achieve the target. Further simulations showed that a second ball mill might help to achieve the desired fineness as well as an increase of grinding throughput by up to 26 %. INTRODUCTION Simulation of comminution, particularly grinding and classification, has received great attention for many years, due to the fact that the unit operation is by far the most important both in terms of energy consumption as well as overall plant performance (King, 2001; Wills et al., 2006). The use of simulation is advantageous due to low cost as well as its ability to consider many variables simultaneously. Moreover, there are some benefits for optimizing grinding operations by simulation like decreased unit operating costs, increased capacity, and improved performance of downstream processes due to improved feed size distribution. This paper presents an optimization study for the grinding efficiency at Buzwagi Gold Mine. This was achieved through three full scale circuit surveys, lab work and simulations with MODSIM."

Operar um Alto Forno com elevadas taxas de injeção de carvão (mais que 180 kg/t de gusa) e baixo taxa de combustíveis (menor que 490 kg/t de gusa), considerando a elevação da taxa de geração de escória devido a matéria prima em degradação (~300 kg/t de gusa) torna-se obrigatório ter estabilidade operacional por meio de boas práticas operacionais suportado por adequado sistema de manutenção centrado em confiabilidade (RCM). Este trabalho objetiva mostrar como a ArcelorMittal planta de Tubarão está enfrentando esta situação, visando atingir os objetivos citados anteriormente.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) has utilized drilled cast-in-place (D-CIP) piles on a number of projects in the midwest. These foundation systems have typically consisted of drilling an 8 to 9-inch diameter borehole with a rotary type drill rig or driving a casing with a small hammer. A structural steel member is installed in the center of the excavated space, and the borehole or casing is grouted to complete the installation of the D-CIP pile. This type of piling system has also been called: mini-pile, micro-pile, or drilled-in pier. The capacity of these piles varies depending upon subsurface conditions, as well as the structural capacity of the pile. The structural capacity can be modified based on the size and yield strength of the structural steel member. SME has used the D-CIP piles for underpinning of lightly-loaded structures for a number of years. Steel brackets can be welded to the structural steel member in the center of these piles, and the bracket extended underneath existing foundations to provide proper foundation support. D-CIP piles have also been used for new construction where access was limited. Recently, SME had the opportunity of providing design as well as construction monitoring services for a unique project where these piles were used, but at much higher capacity. The project involved adding seven additional floors on top of a five-story building (total of 12 stories). New columns were extended through the existing building to support the new floors. Access to construct foundations was available to one level of underground parking beneath the structure, as well as to a basement area. Access required equipment to travel through a 3-foot wide hallway. A special duplex drilling machine was used to access the foundation locations and to install the piles in a limited headroom condition. Eight-inch diameter D-CIP piles were extended to a depth of approximately 40 to 50 feet below grade and socketed into a dense clay till or sandstone, and No. 18 or No. 20 threaded bars were installed in the center of these piles. The design pile capacity was as high as 190 kips and were verified by a compression load test. The load test was performed with limited access and headroom. These piles were installed by Spencer White and Prentis Foundation Corporation (SWP). For conditions where rock or hard soils are encountered at reasonable depths, D-CIP piles can provide working load capacities comparable to larger driven steel piles. The ability of the equipment to access very restricted areas, combined with the high capacities results in a very attractive solution to a number of difficult foundation problems.

Many detonators use small metal bridgewires, which are heated by passing a current through the wire, heating and igniting the pyrotechnic powder in contact with the wire, Typical bridgewires require a current of at least 3 amps, applied for a few milliseconds, for an explosive output. The semiconductor bridge (SCB), in comparison, initiates an explosive in 0.01 to 0.1 of a millisecond.

Data from extensive tests was obtained on friction-head losses of various sand slurries, composed of materials of different specific gravities and under varying transport conditions, to provide useful information for designing hydraulic transport systems. The tests were run in a pilot plant through 2-, 3-, and 4-inch lines with slurries composed of relatively pure barite and limestone solids. Available grinding and classification equipment did not permit attaining a comparable size distribution in the two materials tested, thus preventing direct correlation of friction-head loss values to physical properties or mineral composition. A total of 495 measurements were made of limestone slurries in the 2-, 3-, and 4-inch pipe test sections at flow velocities from 6 to 14 feet per second and pulp densities from 40 to 70 percent solids. A total of 640 measurements of barite slurries were made in the 3-and 4-inch pipe test sections at flow velocities between 7 and 14 f.p.s. and pulp densities ranging from 40 to 80 percent solids.

This Bureau of Mines investigation relates the physical properties of copper reverberatory furnace slags to changes in composition, The smelting of upper Michigan copper ore presents some problems that probably differ from those of other copper smelting areas. The study of these problems has, however, provided important data regarding slags in general and therefore will be of value to other operations as well. Conclusions reached from this study were: (1) Slag fluidity and refractive indices varied directly with the iron content and inversely with silica, lime, and alumina, and (2) there was no apparent correlation between slag fluidity and its copper content.

A significant source of uncertainty in the diamond resource contained in kimberlite pipes is the volume of the pipes. Often the material within a pipe will be mined as ore, leaving the actual geometry of the pipe as a significant source of uncertainty. It is desirable to use stochastic techniques, rather than deterministic methods, to model pipe geometry because stochastic techniques generate multiple realizations that are reproducible and can be used to assess uncertainty in pipe geometry. The proposed methodology uses sequential Gaussian simulation of pierce point locations interpreted from drillholes through a kimberlite pipe. Kimberlite pipes are approximately cylindrical in shape; therefore, the data are transformed to cylindrical coordinates to facilitate the simulation of pipe geometry. Rather than using xyz coordinates to define the pierce points, z, ??and pipe radius are used. The radius variable can be simulated in z-??space to generate multiple realizations of pipe volume. Uncertainty in the volume of the pipe can then be evaluated. This methodology is demonstrated with a kimberlite pipe at BHP Billiton’s Ekati diamond mine.

You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

"Mining companies have recognized that characterization of ore breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits.Recently the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterization testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions.Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalized validation program using machines designed and manufactured by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME). The first unit was installed and commissioned at the Anglo Platinum laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the validation program in 2008, including Barrick, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Teck Cominco. The results from validation tests at the JKMRC and Anglo Research have shown that the JKRBT generates statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional Drop Weight Test, but with significant advantages over its predecessor. Application of the JKRBT in geometallurgical testing with the AMIRA P843 GeM project has confirmed the JKRBT device offers a rapid and consistent method for determining the hardness of drill core samples. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionize ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterization of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control and management of comminution circuits since the concept is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement.INTRODUCTIONMining companies have long recognized that the performance of a comminution machine such as a crusher or an autogenous / semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill depends not only on the machine operating conditions, but also on the “hardness” of the feed material to be broken. This recognition has driven significant interest in laboratory particle breakage characterisation and testing. The laboratory breakage characterization tests can be roughly classified in two broad groups based on their primary breakage modes: tumbling and impact/compression. The famous Bond ball/rod mill tests (Bond, 1952 and 1961) represent the typical tumbling test and have become the industry standard for estimating the specific energy (kWh/t) of rod and ball mills. However, as the energy application in the single particle impact tests can be well defined and controlled, the latter have received significant attention in the last 30 years. It was estimated that mining companies worldwide spent over three million US dollars on single particle impact breakage characterization testing in 2006."
