"ABSTRACTTheoretical approach to estimate the ultimate pile capacity gives a rough idea at the initial stage of design that later on strengthen by the execution of static pile load test at site. The static pile load test is the only best option for the estimation of ultimate capacity of various types of piles. There are various methods based on strength, serviceability, net deflection for end bearing, shaft adhesion, graphical and extrapolation approaches for the interpretation of pile load test data to calculate the ultimate capacity. In this paper an attempt is made to evaluate the best-fit method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of single helix screw pile. The pile load tests on model scale were performed on screw piles of different helix diameter. The purpose of adopting model scale of testing was to achieve a state at which settlement increases without further increase in vertical load. The ground was compacted with dry sand at denser state. It was observed from the test results that extrapolation methods such as Chin- Kondner and Decourt predict the load settlement curve of screw piles very well, however ultimate pile capacity was on higher side which may not be suitable for the strength of helix plate. Decourt approach to plot the pile load data showed clear indication of the deformation of helix due to strong subsurface condition. A modified approach in Decourt method is proposed for estimating the ultimate capacity of screw pile having deformed helix whereas reduction factor is suggested for Chin-Kondner method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of intact screw pile.INTRODUCTIONDeep foundations are used to avoid the soft ground at shallow depth that is not suitable for carrying the structural load. Different types of piles have been used to transfer the load to deeper stratum. The screw pile is one of the new piling method and its use is considerably increasing. It consists of a cylindrical steel shaft with one or more helices at various length of the shaft. The diameter of helices (Dw) is usually 2 – 2.5 times the shaft diameter (Ds). The pile is installed to the required depth through torque and pressure. The advantage of screw pile over other piling system is its quick installation mechanism, high end-bearing and uplift resistance, noise reduction and minimum use of man power."

O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar a eficiência de um forno de aquecimento de barras quantificando o impacto de paradas não programadas na linha de produção. Para isso foram realizados 3 balanços energéticos durante um período de 7 horas. O primeiro balanço foi realizado em um intervalo com registro de paradas, o segundo no período subsequente sem ocorrência de paradas e o terceiro englobando o período total produção analisado (balanço 1 + balanço 2). Tomando-se como referência o resultado do balanço energético sem ocorrência de paradas temos duas situações: a eficiência do forno no período com ocorrência de paradas apresentou uma queda de 27% em relação ao período sem paradas, em relação ao período total de produção a redução foi de 20%. Esses resultados permitiram fazer a projeção, que se a produção ocorresse sem paradas, o potencial de redução seria aproximadamente 15% no tempo total de produção com uma redução de aproximadamente 23% no consumo de combustível. Portanto, destaca-se a importância de um plano de manutenção eficiente, com o objetivo de minimizar o tempo de linha de produção parada e o consumo de combustível, além de aumentar à qualidade aquecimento a vida útil do equipamento térmico.

The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

Ball mills are usually the largest consumers of energy within a mineral concentrator. Comminution is responsible for 50% of the total mineral processing cost. In today?s global markets, expanding mining groups are trying to optimize mill performances. Since comminution is concerned with liberating valuable minerals for recovery in the separation process, it is crucial to run the mills at the best operating conditions which lead to good liberation at competitive throughputs with minimum costs (energy and wear). The high availability of the equipment is also essential to maximize production and profit. To reach this key objective, continuous and reliable information about the mill operation is vital. An innovative tool which can deliver information about in-mill dynamics has been developed by Magotteaux. It can provide online and accurate measurements of the degree of grinding ball fill and pulp position for timely decision making and actions. This tool could be used on its own or linked to an automatic grinding ball loading system named Magoload. Therefore, ball load could be kept constant by using direct measurement. This article describes the Sensomag and presents some of the major improvements that can be achieved with it. Some other promising avenues are still to be explored. In November 1999 Waihi Gold Mining Company commissioned its new crushing and conveying plant used to transport both ore and waste from the Martha Mine to its ore processing plant and also its tailings dam construction area. To date, a record monthly throughput of 854 000 tonnes throughput has been achieved. This paper outlines the measures taken subsequent to the commissioning of the system to achieve greater than design throughput and to mitigate the environmental and safety issues associated with operating the system in the middle of a town.

The objective of this condensed handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. It will be carried with the inspectors during their surveys. The complete handbook should be left in their offices except for Appendix II which lists the compositions of products found in previous surveys. There are several portions of the condensed handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. In an ever increasing ?carbon? society; management and growth will be measured by one?s carbon footprint (or output). Industries, especially mining, are under an ever increasing scrutiny of carbon, water and environmental mandates. These mandates are measured by the emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. The fundamental building-block for any business, strategic or management decision must be based on an understanding of one?s ?footprint?. The scrutiny is most stringent for the commodities producers, power producers & fuel suppliers in the energy market. An overview of currently acceptable standards, application of those standards and nuances experienced in collecting the data necessary to analyze and complete a company?s carbon footprint will be presented. A lack of regulation, the fear and expectation of new and ever constraining rules, regulation and a change in the federal administration is a recipe for uncertainty in the marketplace.

The use of small diameter cast-in-place bored piles is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Such inserts are used as conventional load bearing piles, and are generally referred to as pin piles. The other major application is for the in situ reinforcement of soil slopes or excavations. The paper reviews the applications, construction, design and performance of inserts of each type.

A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. Request for a copy of the program should be directed to the Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. Where raw coal from a mine is treated in dense medium separators ash in the washed product is generally very consistent, provided control of the medium suspension is maintained at a given specific gravity. When, however, the washing process is a Baum jig or other similar apparatus, making a separation at rather arbitrary gravities, the control of the product ash is less accurate, particularly in those cases where the design capacity of the washbox is exceeded by the load of high ash fines. In either of these cases an instantaneous measurement of ash while not essential would be desirable, to check the quality of the washed product and provide operator or management with instantaneous warning of changes in ash. Nearly 60% of all British coal mined goes for electricity generation, to burn at 17% ash, and since the overall average ash content of raw coal as mined is about 30% and varies within a range of 18 ? 40%, incombustible material has to be removed. The ash specification could be met either by total washing, or by washing part and blending the clean coal produced with the remaining untreated coal. Some plants use a straight tonnage split, but generally speaking in Britain it has been found more economical to screen and wash the oversize only. In either case for effective quality control in blending an instantaneous determination of the ash content of the product as it is made has been found essential, since standard ash determination by pyrolysis methods is lengthy and provides information too late to be used in the control of plants blending at the rate of 1000 ton/h.

Mining is the country’s largest industry. It is responsible for 17 percent of the gross domestic product, 65 percent of industrial output and 57 percent of export earnings.

Aços inoxidáveis supermartensíticos (AISM) surgiram em meados dos anos 1990, após algumas empresas petroleiras e centros de pesquisa empreenderem projetos para desenvolver aços inoxidáveis com boa resistência mecânica e resistência à corrosão. A força motriz destes projetos foi a procura de aços inoxidáveis alternativos para os aços duplex e superduplex na extração de reservas de petróleo “offshore”, devido a seu alto custo e a problemas de produção naquela época. Os AISM são derivados dos aços martensíticos inoxidáveis convencionais, possuem menor teor de carbono, para permitir melhor soldabilidade e melhorar a resistência à corrosão, adição de níquel para evitar a presencia de ferrita delta (d) e adição de Mo, que também aumenta a resistência à corrosão. Através de ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica foi avaliada a resistência à corrosão de um AISM 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo, denominado neste trabalho como AIS_2Mo, para três diferentes ambientes, NaCl, NaCl+CO2 e NaCl+H2S (soluções desaeradas). O material foi recebido como chapas laminadas a quente, as quais foram normalizadas a 1.050°C (½ hora/ar) e posteriormente revenidas a 600°C (2 horas/óleo). O melhor desempenho foi observado no eletrólito contendo apenas NaCl, com potencial de pite ao redor de 40 mV (ECS); o ambiente mais agressivo foi a mistura NaCl+H2S, com potencial de pite ao redor de -300mV (ECS), a mistura NaCl+CO2 teve potencial de pite intermediário, com valor 60 mV (ECS) abaixo do eletrólito contendo só NaCl.

Superduplex são aços inoxidáveis bifásicos de alta liga que, para alcançar suas excelentes propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão necessitam de um rígido controle sobre sua microestrutura, em especial sobre dois aspectos: relação ferrita/austenita e precipitação de fases deletérias. As transformações metalúrgicas que ocorrem durante o ciclo térmico de soldagem podem modificar tais aspectos e, consequentemente, causar grave degradação das propriedades destes materiais. Buscando contribuir na investigação de parâmetros adequados para a soldagem destes aços, o presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a influência do aporte térmico e do gás de proteção sobre tais transformações por meio da avaliação da microestrutural final de juntas soldadas. Para isto seis chapas do SAF2507 foram soldadas via processo GMAW utilizando três aportes diferentes (0,5; 1,5 e 2,2 kJ/mm) e dois gases de proteção distintos. Após a soldagem, a microestrutura das juntas foi caracterizada via microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura e os resultados mostraram que o aumento do aporte térmico elevou significativamente a quantidade de austenita tanto na ZTA quanto na ZF e que a utilização de gás de proteção contendo 2% de N causou aumento de até 17,9 pontos percentuais na quantidade média de austenita na ZF. Adicionalmente, observou-se que os dois menores aportes provocaram a precipitação de fases secundárias na ZTA, com morfologia semelhante à nitreto de cromo.

Tests were conducted on samples of rutile, titaniferous slag and ilmenite; each sample was mixed with coke and chlorinated in a bubbling fluidized bed at 1000°C. Profiles of the rates of chlorination of species were constructed from chemical compositions of the bed residues at different durations. From the start FeO and MnO are chlorinated quickly and all but entirely in a fraction of the time it takes to chlorinate all the TiO2. When the level of FeO is significant, as in slag and ilmenite, FeO is chlorinated faster than TiO2is. In these oxides, there is an inverse relationship between the rates of chlorination of FeO and TiO2during this first stage; the relationship, moreover, correlates linearly with the initial percentage of FeO in the oxide. We identify three stages in the chlorination process; a first, in slag and ilmenite, when FeO is being chlorinated; a second, when TiO2is most readily chlorinated; and a third, towards the end, when the levels of TiO2are reduced to those of other species.
