Communications with moving tracked vehicles in a rail haulage mine pose a difficult problem. These communications take place from dispatcher to vehicles or from vehicle to vehicle via the trolley line, which is a very poor communications line. As a result, deadspots and high-signal areas can occur anywhere along the line, or signal can decrease simply as a function of distance. An analysis is made of the trolley line as a communications line, and methods of improving its characteristics are discussed. Data from inmine experiments are presented, showing actual improvements in communications. Recent Bureau developments in new hardware are also discussed. These include an adaptive speaker control for existing carrier phones and a new generation of improved carrier phones.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

This is an initial progress report on a theoretical study of the iron blast furnace. The purpose is to develop a thermochemical model that will simulate mathematically a real furnace. An analysis is made of the behavior of a hypothetical furnace, operating adiabatically on pure ferric oxide, graphitic carbon, and dry air. Relationships are derived for carbon consumption, gas composition, and reaction temperature for a furnace operating at steady state, and in which the smelting rate is slow enough for the gas and solids to approach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Analyses are made for two contrasting types of gas flow: (1) Nonturbulent flow, having no vertical mixing; and (2) turbulent flow, having perfect mixing during each step of the process. It is shown that some vertical mixing is essential for complete reduction of ferrous oxide and that the extent of vertical mixing is one of the critical factors in the behavior of the furnace, This analysis indicates that the thermochemical relationships in a blast furnace can probably be best simulated by a finite series of gas-solid reactors through which gas and solids flow countercurrently and in which the temperature and composition of gases and solids are assumed to be uniform. Any degree of vertical mixing can be approximated by the proper choice of the number of reactors.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. Outotec has performed numerous research and development projects and various surveys in the study of reverse iron ore flotation. Over the past four years their TankCell-70 and TankCell-160 flotation cells at the Germano concentrator of Samarco in Brazil were extensively surveyed. These surveys have revealed some extreme operating conditions in reverse iron ore flotation and are the subject of this paper. Some of the findings include large variations in the content of solids in the various flotation stages. At the bottom of the cleaner cells, the content of solids by weight reached over 60 per cent, whereas at the bottom of the scavenger cell this was less than 50 per cent. Froth carry rates were also significantly different in the various flotation stages. In the case of coarse material, the scavenger cells operated at a froth carry rate of over 40 t/h.m2. With fine material, however, froth carry rates of less than 10 t/h.m2 were measured. High froth carry rates caused significant changes in the residence times at Samarco. In the rougher cells, the fifth cell had more than double the residence time of the first cell. This was even more pronounced with the scavenger cells, where the second cell had more than triple the residence time of the first cell. High froth carry rates also caused losses in iron recovery. As a consequence of such findings, it appears that different rules apply in the sizing of reverse flotation circuits compared to direct flotation circuits. Different operating parameters (mixing intensities and air flow rates) must also be used in the rougher, cleaner and scavenger cells in order to optimise the metallurgical performance. South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

Following on the design of good mining layouts and regional support systems, and the implementation of sound strata control practices, stope support is the ultimate strategy to combat the hazards of rockfalls and rockbursts. The primary function of stope support in intermediate and deep level mines is to stabilize the rock mass immediately surrounding stoping excavations, that is, the zone of fractured rock which behaves in elastically around stopes. Support design is a process resulting in a support system which is both practical and meets or exceeds by a factor of safety the requirements for a particular geotechnical environment. The aim of this project was to design a support system, which accommodates the factors of rockfalls and rockbursts. The pack support unit must be easily handled, less costly and can be used in stopes without any significant convergence. The project tested the structural stability of packs to their expected deformation, in order to design a height to width ratio for stopes where little convergence is expected.

The general history of piling is traced up to the present time with regard to the evolution of methods and materials. The processes have been strongly influenced by developments in basic equipment and industrial change. It is noticeable that in the twentieth century more progress has taken place than in the many previous centuries. It has been strongly influenced by the general development of Soil Mechanics. Test loading is probably the most effective way to assess the success of designs and many empirical relationships have been challenged through it. As we approach a new century it appears that it will be an age of rapid equipment development, with much enhancement of understanding of what has been done. Processes of automatic construction and testing will becoming commonplace. These changes will narrow the limits of conventional scatter that have come to be accepted and to a large extent will be driven by political efforts to curtail energy consumption, to raise standards of quality and reliability, and to conserve the environment. 1. Ancient history. Piling is an ancient art. Its first mention in history is from Herodotus, the first person to commit an account of his times to the written word in the years 557 to 479 BC. He evidently had a strong interest in engineering matters because he wrote of building, brick making, reinforced brickwork, river training, canal building, bridge construction, tunnelling and its acoustic detection and piling. The piling reference comes from Book 5 at paragraph 16.

Several interesting anecdotes are included along with the discussion of the evolution of coal mining methods in the area. Finally, some of the recently introduced equipment at Princess Colliery is described, and prospects for the future of the industry are outlined.

Sinter has high participation in the blast furnaces ferrous burden in ArcelorMittal Tubarão, being therefore of paramount importance the constant control of its physical, chemical and metallurgical qualities, aiming at the fulfillment of the client required quality. With the great challenges faced by market conditions, steelmaking companies seek operational sustainability, aiming at stability and reducing costs. One of the main steps to obtain these results in the Blast Furnaces is the raw materials quality stabilization, in order to guarantee the perfect burden distribution control and a better use of the reductant gas inside the reactor, aiming a lower fuels consumption. It is known that the smaller a ferrous particle is, better its reducibility, since a larger surface area provides greater contact with the reductant agent. Based on this concept, the objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the sinter size produced in ArcelorMittal Tubarão Sinter Plant in its reducibility, and in this way enable the definition of a better sinter particle size distribution aiming at a balance between the permeability effects and gaseous yield in the Blast Furnaces. In addition, the reducibility effects on sinter size reduction were evaluated, where the 5 to 10 mm fraction was analyzed in two sinter samples, the first obtained from the conventional route and the second after crushing of the fraction over 50 mm, in order to simulate the effect of the use of a Secondary Crusher in Sintering.

Microcomputer analysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran, or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This paper explores a new management tool used at TMC on a daily basis to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus 1-2-3 software. By analyzing data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel against predetermined goals, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems are on the order of ten percent improvement.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID) possuem uma estrutura austeno-ferrítica de aproximadamente 50% de cada fase, tal característica confere aos AID propriedades mecânicas superiores aos aços inoxidáveis ferríticos e austeníticos e elevada resistência à corrosão. Esses aços possuem uma adição significativa de elementos de liga, que são os responsáveis pelo correto balanceamento das fases e asseguram as propriedades desejadas. Outro parâmetro importante para assegurar as propriedades desejadas é o processamento termomecânico. Sendo assim, este trabalho avaliou a influência de diferentes temperaturas de tratamento térmico de recozimento nas frações de fases primárias (ferrita e austenita) e nas propriedades mecânicas de dois AID (UNS S32304 e UNS S31803). Os tratamentos térmicos de recozimento foram realizados em cinco temperaturas diferentes com tempo de encharque fixo seguido de um resfriamento rápido. A quantificação das fases primárias foi realizada através de microscopia óptica (MO) e as propriedades mecânicas avaliadas em um ensaio de tração uniaxial. As frações de fases primárias medidas indicam que com o aumento da temperatura de recozimento há aumento na fração de ferrita e a temperatura onde a microestrutura é mais aproxima de 50% de ferrita e 50% de austenita foi em 1020°C em ambos os AID. Além disso, observou-se que com o aumento da temperatura e, consequentemente da fração de ferrita, houve uma redução no limite de resistência nos dois AID deste estudo.

Foram realizados testes completos de pelotamento para avaliar os efeitos da adição de uma solução de cal hidratada ao pellet feed na etapa de pelotamento. Foram preparadas soluções com diferentes concentrações de cal hidratada e após a mistura das mesmas no pellet feed foram realizados testes de pelotamento onde os principais parâmetros de qualidade das pelotas cruas geradas foram avaliados. O diâmetro médio final das pelotas foi o principal parâmetro influenciado pela adição de cal hidratada. A presença dos íons Ca2+ e CaOH+, em função da dosagem de cal, altera o estado de dispersão do minério de ferro, afetando assim o processo de formação das pelotas. Ainda, os cátions Ca2+ presentes no pellet feed interagem com o aglomerante orgânico e com a bentonita, reduzindo a capacidade desses agentes em controlar o crescimento das pelotas.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines-Michigan Technological University mine ventilation mainframe program was successfully adapted for execution in a personal computer (PC). The hardware requirement can be as modest as 256 kilobytes (33) of random access memory (RM) and two floppy disk drives. A version compiled for a PC possessing 512 Kb RAM has arrays dimensioned to accommodate 512 separate mine airways and junctions, and it contains all the features and capabilities of the original version. It has successfully analyzed all the ventilation networks tested, including a very large commercial mine (404 airways, 237 junctions, and 5 fans). In all cases the PC version produced practically identical results as obtained from the mainframe computer. In all respects, the PC version performed the same as the mainframe version with the exception of execution speed When a numerical coprocessor is employed, execution time can be reduced by more than 50%.

The dissolution behavior of gold and silver from Au/Ag alloys in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of cyanide, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were obtained in view of the anodic and cathodic current-potential relationships. The results were discussed in terms of a mixed potential theory. The results showed that the dissolution rate of gold and silver from the alloys was partially controlled by chemical reaction, but largely by transport of either oxygen or cyanide, depending on their relative concentration under the experimental conditions employed in this study.

This bulletin is the third of a series a showing the results of ment purchases of coal according to specifications as to its quality and giving typical forms of proposals for supplying coal and general information relating to government coal purchases . Numerous calls for authentic information concerning the purchase of coal according to its heat value attest a growing interest in the subject. Many of the commodities of life have long been purchased according to specifications requiring chemical or physical tests , or both, to determine whether the material delivered meets the requirements , the price to be paid depending on the results of the tests . Until recent years coal consumers purchased coal merely on the statement of the dealer as to its quality , relying on his integrity and on the reputation of the mine or district from which the coal was obtained. It is surprising that the important question whether value was being received for the money expended was not sooner seriously considered . The purchase of coal by specification is an important step toward the conservation of our national mineral resources , for it results in an increased use of the lower grades of coal. The poorer coals find a market by competing with the better grades , not as to the price per ton but as to the cost of an equal number of heat units. This paper gives in detail the results of government purchases of coal for the fiscal year 1908–9 and the list of contracts with abstracts of specifications for the fiscal year 1909–10 , and summarizes the information on this subject obtained by the Survey. It is hoped that this information will promote a better understanding of the specification method of purchasing coal and furnish data valuable alike to coal dealers and coal consumers , so that equitable contracts can be more readily made.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. Finally, a solution to define the value that can be derived from reconciliation is described, detailing how cross-functional personnel meet monthly to review results and implement actions that are tracked in terms of value creation.CITATION:Morley, C and Arvidson, H, 2017.
