Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to recover chromium chemicals from concentrates derived from low-grade domestic chromites. These domestic chromites contain silicon and aluminum impurities at levels that are too high to permit processing by present industrial processes. The Bureau procedure consists of reacting chromite with molten NaOH under oxidizing conditions to form sodium chromate (Na2Cr04)' The reaction product is leached with methanol to recover the majority of the unreacted NaOH, then with water to extract the Na2Cr04 and the remainder of the NaOH. The Na2Cr04 product is recovered by evaporative crystallization from the aqueous solution. This report presents laboratory results of studies to determine the optimum leaching conditions for the reaction products of several domestic chromite concentrates. Results of solution purification and crystallization studies are also presented. The concentrates are from a variety of sources including the Stillwater Complex in Montana, Red Bluff Bay and the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, and a Ni-Co laterite from southern Oregon. Sodium chromate crystals were produced that contained less than 0.01 pct NaOH.

The field data gathered as part of the measurements described in Volumes I and II were re-analyzed in the low frequency regime (.1 Hz to 1 Hz) where motion sickness normally occurs. These data were compared co the international standard ?ISO 2631 Addendum 2: Evaluation of exposure to whole body z-axis vertical vibration in the frequency range 0.1 to 1.0 Hz." For both underground mining machines and surface mining machines the results showed that one would not expect motion sickness to .be a severe problem. New field data were gathered on the vibration reduction performance of various seat designs found on surface coal mining machines. The vibration during normal operation was measured on the seat using the standard seat pad accelerometer package described in the previous two volumes and simultaneously on the floor of the machine at the base of the seat. Preliminary indications are that the so-called high performance seats used for operator vibration reduction do not offer significant improvement over conventional seats.

First, a definition: “an explosive is called a permissible explosive when it is similar in all respects to the sample that passed certain tests by the national Bureau of Mines, and when it is used in accordance with the conditions prescribed by that bureau. * This was the definition as stated in Miners’ Circular No. 2,” published by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1911, and it is still applicable today. Of course there have been changes over the years, with the name “MSHA Permitted Explosive” now the legal terminology since January 1989, but the old 1911 circular still tells us what the material is. Note that the definition doesn’t even specifically state “coal mining.” A permissible can be required in guy underground operation that is deemed to have a gas or dust hazard, although in 1911 it was certainly meant to refer only to coal.

Através da injeção de materiais pulverizados e gás pelas ventaneiras de um reator é possível conseguir economia de gastos com adição de carvão de topo. Por esse motivo e também visando à redução dos malefícios causados pela liberação de gases diretamente na atmosfera que surgiu a ideia da injeção de biogás pelas ventaneiras. Assim é possível evitar a liberação de CH4 que é altamente prejudicial à vida no planeta, além de reduzir o consumo de carvão de topo no Alto-Forno.Este trabalho discute a variação da Temperatura de Chama frente o efeito da utilização de biogás em Altos-Fornos, bem como o potencial energético desse gás tendo em vista a abundância de fontes de metano provenientes do setor bovino e suíno no Brasil.

The paper presents previously unpublished results derived from an unique interaction moitoring program conducted in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. An abandoned, sealed longwall gateroad was re-entered and instrumented prior to extracting a longwall face 140 m below it. Instrumentation included piezometers connected to a constant head tank to monitor subsidence, and horizontally mounted extensometers to measure strains associated with subsidence. Survey levelling data was also collected. The monitoring results have allowed a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, all of which were either unanticipated or contradict current mainstream thinking. Firstly, interaction subsidence was less than anticipated. Secondly, the effects of rate of face advance on the development of the subsidence profile are evident. Thirdly, compressive strains are shown to remain in the subsided strata. Finally, strata response to undermining was almost immediate. The impact of these findings on the extraction of longwall panels beneath flooded workings in the Sydney Coalfield are discussed.

Este trabalho apresenta a análise, o projeto e o desenvolvimento de um manipulador robótico industrial de baixo custo para linhas de produção. O aparato proposto possui potencial para contribuir na melhoria das condições de utilização de células robóticas no cenário industrial nacional, auxiliando na superação dos desafios existentes na implantação de células robóticas por pequenas e médias empresas, nomeadamente, custos de implantação, manutenção e reprogramação/reconfiguração. O manipulador robótico industrial foi projetado considerando uma estrutura metálica leve de baixo custo, com elementos mecânicos de precisão média e não dedicados, facilmente encontrados no mercado nacional. Além disso, o manipulador robótico foi projetado para ser capaz de alcançar velocidades médias provendo tempos de ciclo de operação quase equivalentes aos apresentados por robôs polares articulados convencionais, nas mesmas aplicações. O sistema de controle foi concebido para não empregar o dispendioso sistema convencional de hardware centralizado de controle de eixos, sendo esta operação realizada por algoritmo computacional executado no mesmo PC responsável pela gestão e integração dos processos. Assim, a operação emprega dispositivos acionadores descentralizados considerando o envio dos sinais de referência diretamente aos acionadores, possibilitando a compensação das restrições dos esforços da estrutura com recursos de suavização de trajetórias. A integração com o usuário foi projetada para possuir uma interface gráfica de manipulação amigável e que permita facilmente os processos de operação, manutenção e de reconfiguração. Fornecendo ainda, recursos de supervisão, histórico de falhas e assistência remota. Por fim, um protótipo do manipulador robótico industrial proposto é apresentado demonstrando as principais características construtivas e operacionais.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. CrusherMapperTM - A New Tool for Crusher Condition Monitoring The efficiency of mineral processing plants is entirely dependent on the availability of the plant equipment critical path. This typically concerns comminution circuits consisting of primary crushers and primary grinding mills. Crusher and mill availability are determined by the frequency and duration of maintenance shutdowns, which are primarily driven by the need for replacement of sacrificial liners. The change of crusher and mill liner shape over respective life cycles also strongly affects plant efficiency. It is therefore highly desirable to accurately monitor the condition of mills and crushers in order to optimise plant efficiency through maximised availability and targeted liner shape. Traditional comminution liner and other production parameter condition monitoring has been attempted through ineffective methods which prevent satisfactory management of crusher and mill maintenance and reduce operational control. This situation has recently dramatically improved for grinding mills through the development and commercial deployment of MillMapperÖ, a technology based on three-dimensional laser scanning data and dedicated software (Franke, Lichti and Stewart, 2006; Franke and Lichti, 2007; 2008; Franke, 2008; Franke, Redman, Johnson and Michalek, 2009). At the time of writing in late 2009, MillMapperÖ is in successful use at a rate of approximately 170 surveys and associated reports per annum at processing plants in Australasia, South America, North America and Africa. This paper presents the introduction of CrusherMapperÖ, the MillMapperÖ equivalent for crushers. CrusherMapperÖ also utilises high density, high accuracy laser scanning data, and features dedicated algorithms for three-dimensional monitoring of wear on crusher concaves and mantles. This facilitates the detection of wear hot spots or zones or localised liner failures, and accurate forecasting of reline tonnages and dates. It also for the first time provides the means to establish optimised concave and mantle shapes in order to achieve production targets. In contrast to any other currently utilised condition monitoring method, CrusherMapperÖ data collection can occur remotely and does not require any shutdown or crusher isolation. This method therefore does not interrupt crusher production while at the same time eliminating any confined space risk normally associated with taking measurements inside the crusher cavity.

This paper provides an overview of the current use of backfill for ground support in underground metal mines in the United States and a summary of recent accident data reported for these mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Backfill mines comprise a major part of the underground metal mining industry and are particularly important in terms of the fatalities and injuries impacting this workforce. Ground falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents at these mines accounting for 50 percent of the total fatalities (4 out of the 8 fatalities that occurred from 2006 through second quarter of 2011). MSHA reported several different types of accidents involving backfill at these mines. While backfill ground falls do not occur frequently, these accidents result in a much higher proportion of fatalities than host rock ground falls. Backfill ground fall accidents are especially hazardous in underhand cut-and-fill mining operations where employees work directly beneath the backfill. An analysis of recent MSHA accident data supports the need for further cooperative research with the mining industry to identify and address ground control problems in underground metal mines using backfill.

Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue?Geology of the Moon and asteroids — Why do we want to mine there?Space enterprises are actively working toward establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2.Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral-rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind."

THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...

A simple solution to the problem of whether to round the calculated number of trucks up or down to the nearest whole number is to adopt as criterion the minimum cost per unit volume/mass moved, assuming all trucks in the fleet are of the same type. When the effects on journey time of varying haul-road slope are calculated for several rolling resistances, it is shown that the optimum angle of 7.5 degrees is moderately independent of both rolling resistance and height climbed; the lower the resistance, the lower the sensitivity to ramp angle, but if haul-road gradients do not exceed 1 in 10 (5.7 degrees) for safety reasons then travelling time will never be more than 7% greater than its theoretical minimum. Further calculations result in a graph of the maximum payload values to incur the minimum cost, for different values of total effective resistance

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

The Richmond San Rafael Bridge (Figure 1) is a 4.3 mile long major toll bridge span across northern San Francisco Bay. Tutor-Saliba/Koch/Tidewater (TSKT) conducted a comprehensive seismic retrofit, which was at the time Caltrans? largest-ever construction contract at $484 million. The robust foundation retrofit design of 11 bridge piers included the installation of 26 new, large diameter (126 to 162 inch OD, wall thickness 1.5 to 2.25 inches) CIDH and CISS piles, with steel pipe piles installed to tip elevations of Elev. ?140 to -220 ft, in water depths up to 70 feet. The open-ended steel pipe piles had initial sections ranging from 71 to 172 feet long, with full lengths that extended to the bay bottom and then through 100 to 130 feet of marine sediments to top of bedrock. The marine soils of most interest consisted mainly of soft to firm Young Bay Mud (YBM), a silty, moderately-sensitive clay common to SF Bay. A key constructability issue was the prediction of pipe piles ?running? under self weight (198 to 625 kips in air) and pile driving hammer weight (IHC S-500 with total assembly weight of 322 kips). The term "pile running" is used to describe the penetration of the pile into the soil due to the self-weight of the pile only. This issue was critical because 1) there was limited head room under the bridge deck, and 2) if piles run too deep, the pile splicing on several piles would be problematic (the lowest desirable pile top elevation after running was +10 ft). While running measurements are sometimes made during marine/nearshore construction, there is little published data on predicted vs. actual running. This paper discusses the running prediction under self weight for 26 piles, and the methodology used in developing the predictions, which ranged from 15 to 94 ft of penetration below mudline. Pile running was recorded and compared with predicted values. The prediction methodology was quite good, and no significant constructability problems were encountered. The authors ?tweaked? the model to provide a slightly improved prediction method. The paper presents the model, predictions, observations, and discusses important lessons learned.

"To adopt new technology advancement in Steel Plant, there is a requirement of shifting of operation process from Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) to Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). New CDQ chamber foundation with deep basement and underground conveyor tunnel are to be constructed in an operating plant where heavy foundations and structures are located in close proximity. Furthermore, the existing CWQ system will be in operation during new underground construction and erection. Challenges to deep excavation of tunnel and chamber foundation consist of non-uniform ground condition, prevent washing out of soil from bottom of existing foundations, stability of existing nearby structures, presence of large number of underground utilities, ensuring safe underground workplace to construction resources engaged in new construction work along with project schedule and budget constraints. A combination methods involving use of soil nailing, soil grouting, contiguous bored pile and micro pile had been adopted for protection of excavation sides as well as existing structures. Each side of excavation in different stretches were analysed during design as well as construction stages. The use of combination of all techniques in a single brown field project in context of the nature of site constraints and safety issues made this a unique project.INTRODUCTIONSteel Industry is one of the backbones of industrial growth of any developing country like India. Due to increasing land prices most of the steel plants in India are expanding within their existing plant facilities. In addition to that, there is demand of adoption of new technology for future expansion projects to set new benchmarks with global standards.The property owner had earlier installed a Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) for their Coke Plant. Now, there is a requirement from process department to proceed with Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). To facilitate the CDQ within the existing CWQ which will be in operation is the main challenge for the property owner. The second challenge is the limited space for underground construction and subsequent equipment erection within the stipulated time frame.From a geotechnical prospective, the project team had uncertainty and reservations in their mind about the construction methodology. Therefore, the role of three “C”: ‘Consultant’-‘Client’- ‘Contractor’ and their combining brainstorming is essential to freeze a working plan for achieving the goal. In this paper, only the excavation support systems for underground foundation structures have been highlighted in the context of solving geotechnical problems."

The State of California, Department of Transportation is currently retrofitting a major interchange near the San Francisco area. The project is located in a highly traveled area of Oakland with light rail commuter service near many footings. Over 600 micropiles are being used in conjunction with CIDH piles for footing stabilization. A specially designed Soil Nail pile will support footings for a new light rail utility structure. Pile testing features in this contract serve as points of interest for future foundation designs. The presentation focuses on substructure issues of this incterchange retrofit. The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

Electricity will play a major part in providing energy services in the 21st century. Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), that is accommodating the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, will provide a focus for optimising the use of electrical energy. Environmental externalities may redefine the cost structure of electricity. Strong corporate environmental management will ensure that current environmental objectives are met and that future ones, identified by the ESD process and environmental externalities accounting, can be developed and implemented by receptive business managers. This paper addresses the current environmental issues of electricity production. It outlines a management strategy for the SECV becoming a community leader in protecting the environment. ESD is discussed in terms of using non-renewable resources wisely, extending their availability and putting in place mechanisms which ensure their ultimate substitution by renewable resources and conservation. The paper explores options for dealing with costing environmental externalities, particularly in relation to greenhouse emissions.
