La méthode d?exploitation traditionnelle de la mine est le chantier chambre-magasin. Cependant, lors de l?exploitation d?un chantier, nous avons été confrontés à un problème de soutirage. Le minerai abattu est resté accroché à l?intérieur du chantier ce qui nous obligea à soutirer environ 200 wagons, représentant 700 tonnes. Suite à l?ampleur de la situation, nous avons décidé de finir l?exploitation du chantier par la méthode sous-niveau long trou retraité. Cette première expérience de récupération de piliers ayant été réalisée avec succès, nous avons décidé de continuer avec deux autres récupérations de piliers afin de pouvoir augmenter notre expertise autant au niveau technique qu?au niveau économique.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. Research to evaluate possible metrics for predicting dredgeability of compact aggregates, by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges, shows work done by the pistons as a viable metric. Analysis of field data shows that there is a low, positive, correlation between cycle time (CT) and work done. If this correlation exists, then CT has to be considered an independent variable affecting work done during dredgeability assessment. Further research is required to elucidate the relationship between CT and work done during dredging. The objective of this paper is to test the hypothesis that work done during dredging increases with increasing CT. Kinematics and dynamics of the hydraulic clamshell were modeled and implemented in Simulink® in MATLAB. The model was validated using field data. The model was then used to test the research hypothesis. The results show that work done increases with increasing CT. This work confirms that work done during dredging increases with increasing CT. This result indicates that though an operator can increase the CT to deal with difficult digging, inputting unduly high CTs results in higher energy consumption during dredging.

O material em estudo consistiu em um aço inoxidável austenítico 201LN, na forma de chapa com aproximadamente 5,00 mm de espessura na condição laminada a quente. As etapas de processamento adotadas neste estudo consistiram em laminação a temperatura ambiente e pré-resfriamento em salmoura, com o objetivo de avaliar a formação de martensita e evolução da resistência mecânica do material. As técnicas de caracterização utilizadas foram macro Dureza Rockwell C (HRC), Ferritoscopia e Difração de Raios-X (DRX). Os resultados preliminares mostraram que tanto a fração volumétrica de martensita formada, como a dureza, foram maiores nas amostras submetidas a maiores percentuais de redução e pré-resfriamento em salmoura.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t Au, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5- 40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects. Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26 per cent of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77 per cent. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88 per cent, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au. Re-cyanidation of some of the dried tailings from the initial tests extracted most of the remaining gold giving a tailing assaying 0.5 g/t Au. This indicated that most of the gold was available for dissolution by cyanide. The poor dissolution of gold by cyanidation of the untreated concentrate was attributed to the presence of flotation reagents. It was shown by UV spectrometry that xanthate-containing compounds were present in the solids fraction of the original pulp and that they were partly removed by pre-treatment. MIBC was also present, and dithiophosphate, which was used in the flotation step, was also probably present. The results indicated that the improvement in gold extraction after filtration and oxidation of the original pulp was due to partial removal of the flotation reagents, and illustrates the detrimental effects that residual flotation reagents can have on the extraction of gold by cyanidation of a flotation concentration.

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

The cost of corrosion as measured by such cost components as the renovation or replacement of coated steel, or the use of expensive coating systems on steel, is considerable. Extrapolating from figures for the USA would place the overall cost of corrosion for South Africa as a figure of the order of magnitude of something over 1% of the GNP. This is a sizeable amount, of which costs associated with atmospheric corrosion would be a significant proportion. The corrosivity of an atmosphere can be defined as the ability of the atmosphere to cause corrosion in a given metal or alloy (International Standards Organization [1]). The ISO Standard 9223 specifies the key factors in the atmospheric corrosion of metals and alloys, and defines categories of corrosivity on the basis of these factors. Prior to the publication of that ISO standard, Callaghan published the results of his twenty-year exposure programme and his excellent corrosivity map of Southern Africa [2]. The present author published updates of the corrosivity map in 1999 [3] and again in 2003 [4]. The summary of the individual areas of corrosivity around Southern Africa was published in the latter paper, and is reproduced here as the following TABLE 1. Of significance in TABLE 1 are the numerous regions of very high corrosivity (C5 or beyond), particularly the rural West Coast shoreline, the North East Coast (KZN) shoreline, and the coastal cities Cape Town, Durban and Richards Bay. The corrosivity map as published is obviously based on much extrapolation as only a small number of points have been measured. During the past three years further measurements have been made, mostly however at the same sites in order to give greater reliability and to monitor long-term trends with changes in pollution. These two aspects are incorporated in this update. There has become available a greater amount of air pollution data for centres in South Africa than was the case some years ago. In this present paper the pollution data are used to extrapolate the corrosivity over areas where little or no direct corrosivity measurement has been made. This methodology is described in ISO 9223.

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

Since the last paper on mining methods was presented to the Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1:960, numerous advances have been made in drilling and blasting techniques at Mount Morgan. This paper describes the drilling and blasting methods being employed in the open cut. The change over to track mounted percussion drills for all types of primary drilling is almost complete and new techniques such as detergent drilling and pressure loading of ANFO are being applied successfully.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

A heterojunction of PbS - CuS thin film has been grown on glass slides by SGT. The films were annealed for 1hr at temperature of 373K and 423K respectively. The optical properties were characterized using a UNICO UV - 2102 PC Spectrophotometer at normal incidence of light in the wavelength range of 200 - 1000nm. The minimum percentage transmittance was observed to be 34% for sample A and 25% for sample B within the same optical region. The band gap energy was determined from the spectra to be 2.05eV for sample A and 1.85eV for sample B which gave a band shift of 0.20eV. It can thus be concluded that the optical properties of the films within the VIS - UV - NIR can find application in solar thermal technology, particularly as antireflection coating, window materials and as good materials for selective solar cell fabrication.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are an accepted, but continuously expanding, comminution technology. The copper industry has a growing need to process harder ores with progressively lower grades, more challenging metallurgy and increasing demand for efficient bacterial leaching applications. This has resulted in a major focus on HPGR use in a crushing circuit. If the industry is to increase leach extraction while lowering energy costs in high-throughput hydrometallurgical operations, HPGR will be of inherent significance. The following paper summarizes test work on copper leach ores utilizing the benefits of HPGR comminution, while increasing several critical metallurgical parameters. Based on the current work and previous investigations, it was found that HPGR comminution within a crushing circuit, in specific instances, can result in 2 - >10% increases in cop-per extraction. The tested variables are crush size, rock type and copper mineralogy dependence. Various other process parameters may also be optimized.

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining community about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

With a brownfield project comes control integration challenges. The Khumani Iron Ore Mine’s second phase expansion posed a number of challenges as there was substantial brownfields work conducted. The fi rst phase was the compilation of the modifi ed process functional specifications for the project. The second phase was an audit on all of the operational sequences; this included a comparison between the SCADA sequences, sequential starts analysed from the historian data (with the potential for improvements made by the plant operators in manual start-ups) and what was proposed in the process functional specification. Differences, inclusions and missing equipment were highlighted. The third phase was the comparison of interlocking and control in the PLC with the updated process functional specification; this was done during the coding process. Running parallel to the three phases was the SCADA integration; tie-ins to the existing SCADA were conducted on maintenance days and shutdowns, in many instances with ‘dummy’ equipment to get the operational staff accustomed to the new interface. This paper details each of the phases, the success of this methodology as well as the pitfalls experienced.

A critical safety component for all underground mining is intrinsic and standing support systems. Specifically, tabular hardrock mining exploits a wide variety of deposits that require various methodologies to safely mine the ore material. Several new support systems have been developed in recent years for hard rock applications which have been modified or applied in a variety of ground control applications. These include prestressing devices, improved cribs, and free standing supports. Various standing support and prop-type systems have been designed for hardrock applications with seismic loading conditions to accept prestressing. The prestressing, using water-filled cells, creates an active load upon installation and is considered essential to maintain support during and after the blasting of the mine faces. Heavy seismic activity is also present in these mines and the prestressing units can provide some energy absorption capability to help preserve the integrity of the support. This paper presents an overview of these innovations in support technology.

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. Cement-bentonite (C-B) slurry walls have been used for ground water cutoff in deep excavations, contamination containment, and other applications. Hydraulic conductivity is of great concern for cement-bentonite slurry walls. The quality control program usually specifies permeability and strength tests to be performed in a laboratory on samples cast in the field and cured for a certain time. Currently there is no widely accepted in-situ test method for the performance of the constructed slurry wall. A recently constructed cement-bentonite slurry wall in South Carolina included a 200-foot-long test section done in advance of the production of an 8,300 foot-long wall. Intensive tests and investigation were conducted during and after the test section construction: Monitoring piezometers were installed using wet insertion method and packer tests were conducted in boreholes drilled in the post-28-day-cure slurry wall. The permeability measured from the packer tests was about two orders of magnitude higher than the design and the laboratory test values. Additional investigation was performed using a video camera to inspect the borehole walls especially the packer test sections. Test pits were excavated to observe both sides of the cement-bentonite slurry wall. A thorough inspection was conducted to evaluate the integrity of the wall. The lessons learned and issues regarding the disturbance effects of in-situ testing of cement bentonite slurry walls is presented and discussed.

During the spring and summer of 1946, the Bureau of Mines put down 8 churn-drill holes and 9 diamond-drill holes, totaling 3,535 feet of bore, at the Blewett zinc-lead deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill. Attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to this deposit by the Illinois State Geological Survey, which had investigated the Blewett mine. In the opinion of the Survey and the Bureau of Mines, the record of production and results of drilling previously done on the property were considered sufficient justification for continuing investigation to the north and south along a projection of the trend. This report describes the work done by the Bureau on this, property and presents the data obtained.

There are several thousand remote stream crossing structures in the Tongass National Forest in need of removal. In 2007 thirty-three collapsing log bridges, log culverts, and metal culverts no longer in use were removed with explosives. Species of salmon, trout, char, and sculpin are present in the project area. Blasting overpressures may injure or kill fish in streams and ground vibrations can damage salmonid embryos in streambeds. Regulatory agencies offer guidelines with limits for blasting induced overpressures and vibrations. However, there has been no quantification of blast overpressures in shallow streams. Methods used to predict lethal levels for various blasting applications have not been completely validated. This research provides guidance for analyzing ground vibrations and water overpressures during blasting activities in or around fish streams.

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."
