A tecnologia de autorredução apresenta um grande potencial por apresentar características de alta velocidade de redução e de eficiência energética, resultando em economia de energia e em alta produtividade na produção de metal primário. Têmse dois processos consolidados de aglomeração. A utilização de cimento como aglomerante, com cura a frio que formam hidratos que conferem resistência, apresenta problema principal de sofrer degradação às temperaturas na faixa de 800 a 1000 °C, devido à decomposição dos hidratos. O outro processo é o de utilização das propriedades do carvão de alta fluidez e tratá-lo termicamente para que sirva de redutor e aglomerante. Este processo não é o de cura a frio, porém diminui consideravelmente a quantidade de escória em comparação com a utilização de cimento. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de analisar, na literatura técnica, os aglomerantes alternativos e iniciar os ensaios para verificar os comportamentos de resistência mecânica, principalmente a quente. Em função dos resultados a etapa seguinte será a de projetar um processo que seja compatível com resistência mecânica a quente. A análise resultou em sugestões para os ensaios. Os resultados preliminares, com utilização de bentonita e ácido bórico estão indicando resistência a quente das pelotas melhores que as obtidas com a utilização de cimento.

One very important aspect of mining is deciding what material in a deposit is worth mining and processing, versus what material should be considered waste. This decision is summarized by the cut-off grade policy. The cut-off grade strategy for an open pit mine influences the annual cash flows and affects the net present value of a project. The optimization of cut-off grade strategy requires the knowledge of detailed operational costs, mining sequence, mining operation, processing, and product constraints, as well as the grade distribution of a given deposit defined by pit, phase, and different material types. Cut-off grade optimization algorithms have been developed in the past. The most common criteria used in cut-off grade optimization is to maximize the net present value (NPV). This paper describes the determination of a cut-off grade strategy based on Lane?s algorithm adding an optimization factor based on the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) algorithm to maximize the project?s NPV. The introduced algorithm is a windows based program developed at Virginia Tech that is based on a series of Visual Basic routines within a spreadsheet environment (Excel).The benefits of the methodology are demonstrated using a hypothetical case study. Electrochemical, chemical, and image analysis techniques were utilized together with statistical analysis methods to determine the effect of various anode impurities on copper electrorefining performance. Results indicate that arsenic is a beneficial anode impurity. Anode lead and sulfur are shown to decrease electrorefining performance. Specific emphasis is given to the influence of individual elements on current efficiency, slime particle generation, and cell voltage parameters.

La Planta Hidrometalúrgica de Cerro Verde tiene como objetivo alcanzar la máxima calidad en cada uno de sus procesos operativos. Para ello, desarrolla un diseño que permita la transformación del control remoto a una operación automática, generando decisiones lógicas. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de los Sistemas de información de operaciones en el sistema de automatización de Cerro Verde - en tanto es soporte de la implementación de un completo sistema de instrumentación y de la instalación de una red de PLC’s que colectan la información y en base a esta, desarrollan una lógica de operación manteniendo interconectados todos los circuitos operativos. Posteriormente, con el uso de software se crea una interfase de conexión entre la red industrial y la red Administrativa, permitiendo adjuntar la información en una base de datos que junto a la otra base administrativa, constituyen un ERP que da vitalidad a nuestra operación. De forma que los sistemas de informacion instalados en Cerro Verde consideran a los sistemas de instrumentación como los ojos del operador de planta.

In the latter half of 1973 a contract was given to Roberts-Holland Joint Venture for the stripping of the southern exhaust airway.The contract was carried out efficiently and relatively cheaply. It was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.The sinking stage and in particular the drilling jumbo proved to be a success and helped produce an above schedule stripping rate.No major problems were encountered with ground conditions or ventilation. A survey of the shaft showed the diameter to be within the set limits of 5·49 m ± 0·15 m.

The Gearhart Mountain Wilderness and RARE II area 6225 encompass 22,823 acres (9,236 ha) of the Fremont National Forest in southern Oregon (fig. 1). The area was studied under the provisions of the Wilderness Act of 1964 (Public Law 88-577). The U.S. Bureau of Mines determined the mineral potential of known mines, prospects, or mineralized areas, while in a separate effort the U.S. Geological Survey made geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies. MINERALIZED AREAS The study area contains no mining districts or known claims. Nearby occurrences of uranium, base metals, perlite, mercury, and diatomite apparently do not extend into the study area. Reconnaissance pan samples reveal only trace amounts of gold. No anomalous economic minerals were found in heavy mineral fractions of samples from stream beds draining the area.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

Reduce the cost of modifying uranium well casings so that leaching solutions can pass through, but sand grains are blocked. Approach The well casing and surrounding cement are perforated at the mineralized zone by impinging them with high pressure water jets. How It Works A nozzle assembly is attached to a high pressure (15,000 psi) pipe and lowered into the well casing which typically is schedule 40 PVC (poly-vinyl chloride). The high pressure pipe line is extended down Into the casing until it reaches the mineralized zone. The upper end of the pipeline is then connected by a high pressure hose to the outlet of a 10,000 psi pump. Turning the pump on for 5 seconds causes a high velocity water jet to cut through the well casing and the surrounding cement. Figure 1 shows a high pressure pipe being installed in a well casing. Cutting small diameter holes in the casing allows the leachant to enter the casing and be pumped to the surface. However, the holes are small enough to prevent most sand grains from entering. Numerous holes are usually cut through the casing. The 3-nozzle assembly shown in Figure 2 cuts three holes, one above another.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine?s Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested 2nd demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

Two versions of a VF transceiver to aid in location of trapped miners has been developed and tested. The belt worn model was produced in both transmitter and transceiver configurations. In addition, a quantity of the belt worn models were fabricated using aluminum wire instead of copper in order to reduce unit weight. Ten prototypes of a battery cap model VF transceiver were also fabricated demonstrating further unit size and weight reduction while maintaining electrical performance. Samples of- both versions were tested environmentally and the test data is included in this report. While both versions of the VF transceiver are similar electrically, and are constructed using convential manufacturing techniques, the battery cap model realizes a lower total weight, smaller volume and production cost than the belt worn version. Operationally, the battery cap model assures that the VF transceiver will always be with the miner.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

The installation of augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles requires careful quality control to assure a successful pile installation. Unlike steel, pre-stressed concrete or other types of driven piles, which are shop fabricated, delivered to the site and typically driven to a minimum tip resistance, augered cast-in-place piles are installed to a pre-determined tip elevation or to a refusal criteria. The structural section of the ACIP pile is constructed during pile installation and cannot be inspected prior to installation. Therefore, a carefully administered quality control program is essential to a pile foundation that will meet or exceed design requirements. This requires an experienced team consisting of the Geotechnical Engineer, Contractor and Inspector. The focus of this paper is to discuss the responsibilities and duties of the ACIP piling Inspector. Qualifications of the Inspector The qualifications of the inspector are related to the complexity and difficulty of the proposed project. Ideally, the Inspector should be an individual with a degree in civil engineering with special emphasis in geotechnical engineering. A properly trained technician with geotechnical engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a geotechnical engineer may be able to provide competent inspection on some projects. It is important that the Inspector have a good understanding of subsurface and ground water conditions and how they will affect pile installation. The Inspector must understand ACIP pile installation procedures and be able to communicate with the Contractor, Structural and Geotechnical Engineers; and maintain a detailed pile record for each installed pile.

Successful mineral exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. Contrary to what the environmental lobby would have the world believe, the industry is replacing the metals it is extracting. The reserve base has not changed significantly in 20 years (Fig. 1.) Mineral exploration is a research activity. First there is the idea, the vision or the intuitive thought. The experiments follow. These involve repeated phases of data gathering, data interpretation and concept testing through drilling. For many companies, exploration is the main investment in scientific research. Each mineral exploration experiment may involve years of costly work. Despite the improving tools of science and technology, the investment remains high-risk. Only the promise of high rewards, or desire to survive as a mining company, will stimulate the necessary commitment and level of investment. Confidence that an economic return can be achieved, confidence in the science and technology being applied and confidence in the people involved are the foundations upon which successful mineral exploration is built (Woodall, 1984). The challenges facing the explorationist in the 1990s fall into two categories: - the challenge to make the activity economic; and - the challenge to make the activity socially and, therefore, politically acceptable.

Os convertedores BOF, em função das condições operacionais e mesmo de sua localização, sofrem variações de parâmetros cujos seus efeitos sobre o metal líquido nem sempre são considerados. O presente trabalho investigou dois aspectos: a pressão ambiente no interior do convertedor e a temperatura do oxigênio no reservatório estagnante. Os resultados mostram que a temperatura de oxigênio apesar de alterar as propriedades de saída desse gás tem pouca influência na penetração de jato. Já a pressão ambiente do BOF tem grande influência na penetração de jato, e leva um dilema nos dimensionais de bocais de lança relativo aos jatos subexpandidos e sobrexpandidos.

THIS paper is the outcome of experiments carried on and experience gained. at the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company's tailings plant at Waihi, New Zealand. The plant was erected to treat accumulated tailings which had been discharged into the Chinemuri River by the Waihi batteries.The Chinemuri River is a common sludge channel for all mining debris, tailings, and ashes from the power plants, the last being the cause of occasional high residues, which gave so much trouble to the management. The tailings were dredged from the bed of the river into barges by means of a Pohle air lift, the power being supplied: by a 13 b.h.p. Tangye oil engine driving an air compressor and a centrifugal pump. The sands were elevated from the barges by bucket-belt elevators over screens, to eliminate large particles and rubbish, into storage hoppers, and from there fed direct into four C. Judd Ltd. tube mills.The method of treatment was fine grinding in a weak cyanide solution, agitation in B. and M. tanks, filtration with turn-over vacuum filters, and precipitation with zinc shavings. The comparatively high values of the residues in gold gave a great deal of trouble, 'and it was not until repeated experiments were carried out that the cause of the trouble was located. The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. At present, a need exists for more effective noise control in the coal-mining industry. In particular, new muffler designs with the required acoustic performance are needed for percussive pneumatic drills. Accordingly, the U. S. Bureau of Mines issued a contract to USS Engineers and Consultants to design a muffler capable of attenuating the noise from the air exhaust of a pneumatic drill. The specific objective of the contract was to design and deliver a prototype muffler that would attenuate the air-exhaust noise to 90 decibels on the A scale (90 dbA). The test drill used in this investigation was one used for roof-bolting purposes in coal mines. Using the combined approach of analysis by digital-computer program and experiment by simulated-noise tests, three prototype mufflers were designed and constructed at U. S. Steel Research. The mufflers consisted of a variety of resonator chambers and expansion-contraction chambers, and were of the following sizes: A muffler with a 3- by 5-inch elliptical cross section and about 8 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 5-1/2 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 10-1/2 inches in length. These mufflers were subjected to laboratory tests to determine their effectiveness in attenuating exhaust noise, mechanical noise, total drill noise, and simulated noise. All mufflers reduced the exhaust-noise level by about 25 dbA - from about 115 dbA without a muffler to below 90 dbA with a muffler - and thus were successful in meeting the contract objective. Field tests were conducted with the three prototype mufflers at U. S. Steel's Robena No. 4 Mine, and no icing problem was encountered. A fourth prototype muffler was designed to fit around the leg of the pneumatic drill. Tests showed that this kidney-shaped muffler also reduced the air-exhaust noise to below 90 dbA.
