Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. Many reports have been written about the issues surrounding small scale miners’ challenges in Namibia; yet little has been done to address these challenges. There has been a fragmented approach to address these challenges. Various government arms and donor organizations have utilized piece meal methods in the past in trying to make improvements on the productivities across the sector, but with no meaningful success. This has led to the design and implementation of inappropriate technologies and support services for the sector. The structures of many of the semi-precious stones mining businesses are informal, with very little royalties received by the government. Miners often work informally or illegally and they fear government interference and they distrust outsiders, resulting in them withholding production information. The presence of small scale miners is quite often associated with major challenges, including poor safety and environmental management standards, the spread of communicable diseases and poor working conditions. The majority of the miners employ uncontrolled extraction techniques which damage the crystals and mineral specimens, resulting in intermediate and final products of low quality along with high wastage at the extraction stage. The vision of the Namibian government is to expand the range and value of semi-precious stones and jewelry products processed within Namibia, while curbing illicit flows of raw stones. This will simultaneously secure maximum benefit for the country. This study investigated the interventions aimed at making the small scale mining sector in Namibia sustainable. A baseline study was conducted to analyze the current situation and characterize the industry, including a SWOT analysis. Information was collected through questionnaires, interviews, consultative meetings, field visits and workshops in order to profile the sector. The baseline study results were used in developing interventions for improving artisanal and small scale mining operations. The main challenges for the Namibian semi-precious sector were identified as: factual information about raw material resources and its beneficiation are insufficient or not available, lack of skills, lack of education and access to finances, rudimentary exploration and mining practices, trading and logistics that are not functioning effectively and inadequate sector governance. One key finding of this study was that Namibia is not benefiting through value addition due partly to illicit flows of the uncut stones and to the fact that lapidary is not much pronounced to a greater extent. The following strategic interventions were identified as key in ensuring the sustainability of the small mining sector in Namibia: conducting geological assessment to identify new deposits and quantify the existing ones, improving exploration and mining practices, investing in education and training, creating an enabling environment and improving the sector governance and strengthening the sector organization and supporting the infrastructure.

Subsidence beneath the land surface has traditionally been monitored using the most accurate surveying methods of the day. Over the several hundred years of subsidence investigation, these techniques have improved, and thus the accuracy of subsidence measurements has improved. In circumstances where the subsiding surface is masked by water or rock, novel methods must be developed. This method describes the recent successes of subsidence monitoring using advanced bathymeric techniques in the Sydney Coalfield. In order to obtain subsidence profiles above submarine coal extractions, seafloor bathymetry surveys, run before and after mining, have shown that subsidence profiles can be detected, despite the primitive nature of some of the trials. Very recently, there have been considerable advances in this field, associated with the availablity of high-powered personal computers to control data collection and analyse the results. The recent surveys described in this paper have demonstrated the considerable potential for such methods. This paper describes bathymetric subsidence monitoring developed in the Sydney Coalfield, illustrated with some typical results, and summarizes the findings of the research leading to the development of subsidence design criteria specific to the Sydney Coalfield.

Introduction Probably the newest thing in mining safety is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industry, as represented by both management and labour, and the general public of many nations in which mining is conducted, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments in the technical press;' in labour periodicals, in popular Journals and periodicals, and in the daily press (5, 11). Despite what may be said to the contrary, mining in the United States is becoming safer, and this trend has been evident for several years (see Figures 1 to 4). Because the author's experience has been mostly in the United States this paper will discuss briefly some recent observations in the United States that have a bearing on mining safety. Because coal mining is of primary interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, the paper treats mostly of coal-mining safety; however, many hazards in mining .are common to all mines, regardless of the minerals mined.

Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

In the spring of 1999, construction commenced on the new Steelers Football Stadium in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Richard Goettle, Inc. (RGI) was the successful bidder to install the specified augercast piles for the foundation package. Description - Pittsburgh Steelers Stadium The new stadium will house the Pittsburgh Steelers Professional Football Team. It is widely believed that if a team is provided with a modern playing facility, that a winning season will ensue (Not always the case). The new stadium location is on the north side of Pittsburgh on the Ohio River, and just downstream of the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. The site is west of existing Three Rivers Stadium. The Three Rivers Stadium was built during the late sixties and housed both the Pirates Baseball and Steelers Football Teams. The Public Auditorium Authority elected to replace this outdated stadium with two new stadiums, one for each professional team. The landmark stadium was imploded in February of 2001.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, controlling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech­nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to develop and/or improve control technologies that reduce the respirable dust exposure of workers in underground coal mines. The goals of this research involve optimizing the use of water sprays and ventilating air, as well as, evaluating emerging control tech­nologies. An overview of dust controls typically utilized in underground US coal mines will be provided. An update on ongoing PRL research efforts that are evaluating new control technologies will also be presented.

The goal of the program is to develop a dust collector system mounted on a ranging drum or arm shearer which will: 1) reduce the respirable dust level of the shearer operator by at least 75 percent; 2) be easily and economically mounted on an existing shearer; and 3) will not, through modifications to the shearer, reduce its safety or productive capability. The development program consists of three phases covering the activities of the design of the dust collector system, fabricating and installing it on the ranging arm or drum shearer, and conducting underground field tests on the modified mining machine.

"As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

Three test pile programs were conducted in Charleston, South Carolina to evaluate differences in bearing resistance due to installation methods. The tested piles were installed with impact hammers and vibratory drivers through soft clays and/or loose sands into the Cooper Marl, a stiff calcareous marine clay or silt. Piles driven into the Cooper Marl experience significant capacity gain with time following initial installation due largely to pore pressure dissipation. Pile size and pile type were both known to affect pore pressure generation during installation and subsequently the capacity gain with time. The test programs were primarily conducted to optimize pile design values and construction methods with regard to trestle construction but the results also contribute to the understanding of driven pile behavior. High strain dynamic testing was performed on several open-end pipe and H-piles. The measured difference in long-term bearing capacity of the H-piles as a result of the two installation methods was negligible, while the short-term bearing capacity of the pipe pile was larger when the piles were installed using impact hammers. The lower short-term resistance in the vibratory driven piles is attributed to larger excess pore pressures generated during installation compared to those generated during impact driving.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

We studied mineralogical characteristics of the vermiculite samples from seven mines in China. We found three types of interstratified structures in the investigated samples: 1:1 regular interstratified structure, segregated interstratified structure, and random interstratified structure. The vermiculite samples from six mines are mainly composed of phlogopite?vermiculite interstratified minerals, and the samples from the other mine are composed of chlorite?vermiculite interstratified mineral. The samples with phlogopite?vermiculite structure have high contents of K2O, TiO2 and Na2O. The samples with chlorite?vermiculite structure have the highest contents of MgO and Al2O3. The cation exchange capacity of the samples is 17.3?99.0 mmol/100g.The exchangeable cations of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Weili Mine mainly include Na+ and Ca2+, while those of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Tongguan Mine mainly include Mg2+ and Ca2+. The thermal expansion ratio of the samples is between 9 and 32. The exfoliated vermiculite products from Weili Mine have the best mechanical strength.

Stereolithography is a well known rapid prototyping technique in the manufacturing sector. Essentially it is a three dimensional printing process that produces plastic prototype parts from standard CAD files. At present, Canadian mining companies are not fully aware of the potential of Rapid Prototyping Techniques (RPTs) for their production and mine design systems. Mining engineers and geologists attempt to visualize and understand the characteristics and layouts of orebodies on computer models and in cases where it is decided to develop physical models, the process is time consuming based on simplified constructions. Rapid prototyping techniques (RPTs) such as stereolithography can facilitate engineers and geologists to quickly and with satisfactory accuracy to visualize sections of orebodies and evaluate alternative ore extraction techniques using 3D solid models. The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in collaboration with the Department of Mines Research of Inco Limited and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada. The main objective with this research is to evaluate the applicability of state-of-the-art RPTs (e.g. stereolithography) to underground hard rock mining systems. RPTs can play a significant role in accelerating the design and development process of mining systems.

Geophysical explosive charges are used in mineral resource exploration. They are detonated subsurface and radiate sonic waves into ground monitors, which detect the vibration waves and their interaction with underlying geologic strata. Geophysicists perform computer analyses of the waves reflected from the strata to determine their depth and thickness (Strobel, Berger & Schaefer, 2012). The purpose of this research is to determine how the detonating explosive charge interacts with the adjacent ground and how the induced waves propagate through the surrounding medium. Furthermore, it is necessary to optimize the location of the initiation point within the charge. Establishing both the direction and intensity of the waves will allow geoscientists to refine and optimize geophysical studies that employ explosive charges.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The proposed recommencement of mining activities recognises the complexity of the KIVS and later disruptive faulting and will require tighter grade control systems, targeted mining techniques and a gravity circuit to maximise free Au recovery.CITATION:Vigar, A J, Lueck, B, Taylor, I, Prendergast, K and Dale, P, 2015.
