A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. Surface subsidence is an inevitable consequence of many underground mining operations and has been recognized as such since the fifteenth century. Damage resulting from this phenomenon ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings and has been witnessed in rural (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania) as well as in urban areas (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Wyoming). In fact, it is estimated that over 2 million acres of land across the United States have been affected by mining subsidence, of which 140,000 acres are in urban areas (Singh, 1978; Johnson and Miller, 1979). Further, it is estimated that during the next twenty years an additional 1.5 to 2.4 million acres of land will also be affected by mining. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technologic and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Foreign experience has demonstrated, however, that subsidence can be successfully controlled if an accurate method of predicting ground movements is available. Such techniques have been developed in many coalfields, where it is currently accepted that subsidence can be predicted within ± 20 percent of the actual values. Furthermore, such movements can be translated into anticipated structural failures using established damage criteria, thus enabling appropriate precautionary measures to be implemented.

Abstract - The Nanisivik mine offers a unique opportunity to examine the economics of a mining scenario from its original feasibility study through to closure. In the early 1970s, the Strathcona Sound project (exploration around the Nanisivik mine) had advanced to the point where a significant mineralized body had been defined and a feasibility study was initiated. The study supported development of the Nanisivik mine, with government investment in regional infrastructure, and the mine was constructed and operated for 26 years. Many elements of the feasibility study were difficult to estimate because the project was unique in its high Arctic setting. As a result, many differences were found when comparing the actual mining data to the feasibility study. The majority of these differences were the result of an actual mine life of 26 years instead of the planned 12.5 years. Most of the mining costs were higher than estimated and production occurred at a much higher extraction rate than planned. On a constant dollar basis, the metal prices were, on average, below the feasibility estimates. For the most part, these differences balanced out, with the actual mining being only slightly more profitable than anticipated in the feasibility study.

Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC), as the most attractive method for thick coal seams, has been suffering from insufficient geomechanical understanding for the past few years. Cavability without doubt is the most critical geomechanical issue associated with the top coal caving method. A discontinuum method has been used for comprehensive modeling of LTCC operation by using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). In addition Particle Flow Code (PFC) and Phase2 were used as support for the caving mechanics analysis. Although the previous researches of gravity flow in caving operations neglected the effect of continuous span expansion, it has been observed in this study that face advancement has a great impact on roof symmetrical behavior. The amount of symmetry fluctuates between different face distances. Horizontal displacement seems to be the best indication for roof symmetrical evaluations. Two critical caving conditions have been modeled and parameters such as horizontal displacement, caving angle and recovery rate have been compared thoroughly. Results show that unsymmetrical behavior on the roof is closely related to face stability.

ABSTRACT - The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No . 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.50% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz ( ± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeochemistry of !east altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary sig­ nature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2O + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3, and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe+ Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies (lacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal­ bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+ Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophically from an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy.

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

Rockbolt failures at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant have been recorded since 1990 and are categorized in terms of mode of failure. The failures are evaluated in terms of physical location of installation within the mine, local excavation geometry and stratigraphy, proximity to other excavations or shafts, and excavation age. The database of failures has revealed discrete areas of the mine containing relatively large numbers of failures. The results of metallurgical analyses and standard rockbolt load testing have generally been in agreement with the in situ evaluations.

Continuously monitor and record respirable dust levels underground by a reliable, sensitive, and fast-response device. Approach A light-scattering photometer, having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source and other significant improvements, has been designed and incorporated into a portable continuous monitor. How It Works The monitor continuously draws air into the sampling inlet through a cyclone that removes dust particles larger than respirable size. The dusty air enters the photometer vertically downward through a cylinder which is intersected by the optical system. (This cylinder appears as a circle in the drawing of the photometer.) The center of he column of dusty air intersects a beam of pulsing light from the LED, causing some of the light to be reflected, scattered, and refracted. Only the light that is scattered at an angle of about 700 from the light beam passes through a lens to the photodetector which generates an output voltage Signal proportional to the dust content in the air. Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

Keywords: thermodynamic, Ni-Co alloy powders, composition, fibrous The mathematics model of Ni(II)-Co(II)-C2O42?-NH3?H2O-H2O of thermodynamic equilibrium system has been developed theoretically according to the law of conservation of mass and the law of simultaneous equilibrium, and the logarithm concentration-pH (log[Me2+]T-pH) diagrams of this system have been made. The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

THE results published in Professor Howe's paper 10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels 11 containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by' the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to -0.1 sec. for recording .time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12. The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5/8 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thereto-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by, platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

The monosaccharides glucose, galactose and arabinose, and the polyols glycerol and mannitol (0.1 Ufo WIV) supported pure and mixed culture heterotrophic bacterial manganese leaching of solid pyrolusite (MnO2, 2% W/V) to yield 14-38 mg/litre manganous ion in 3 days from a simple mineral salts media at 30°C. Supplementation of pure bacterial isolates growing on glucose with soluble intracellular photosynthate from freshwater algae (0.07 g/l carbohydrate) and marine algae (0.11 g/l) led to an improvement in Mn++ yields of 24 and 100 per cent respectively. Extracellular products of the freshwater algae (0.3 g/l carbohydrate) boosted recoveries by 57 per cent.

This Bureau of Mines report compares the availability of federally owned minerals in Arizona with lands considered favorable for discovery of mineral resources, to deter-mine the extent to which Federal mineral lands in such areas have been withdrawn by legal action or restricted by management practice. Of particular concern are restraints on Federal lands in areas identified as highly favorable for occurrences of valuable mineral deposits. Excluding Indian lands held in trust by the Federal Government, about 32 million acres, 44%, of Arizona's mineral estate is federally owned. This total includes lands with partial Federal mineral ownership. Approximately 16.5 million acres, or 52% of these lands, are available for location or lease. This includes 496,000 acres, 62%, of the lands highly favorable, and 2.6 million acres, 57%, of the lands moderately favorable for locatable minerals in Arizona. All other Federal mineral lands are either withdrawn or restricted, reflecting a wide range of purpose, authority, and impacts on mineral exploration and development.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

PGE concentrations of 18 g/t occur in the pyroxene rich rocks at the Union Bay Alaskantype complex. This PGE enrichment is hosted in magnetite veins. These veins cross magmatic layering and have an irregular morphology in both outcrop and thin section. Fe-Ti oxide geothermometry suggests that this mineralization took place between ~700-400°C. A variation in the amount of ilmenite and Mg- Al spinel exsolution in magnetite correlates with temperature estimates, lower temperature magnetite has less exsolution. Hydrous silicates form an alteration envelope around magnetite veins with a formation temperature of <575oC, vary with temperature, and contain appreciable amounts of Cl. Interaction of a PGE-Fe-Cl rich fluid with clinopyroxene increased the fluids pH and decreased PGE and Fe solubility depositing a PGE enriched magnetite within the Pyroxenites and Olivine Pyroxenites of the Union Bay complex.

The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment.
