The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables. This paper describes a case history of geochemical prospecting. An area of known mineralization was available for an orientation survey which led to the selection of elements and criteria for a reconnaissance survey in the area offsetting the known mineralization. Certain anomalies were found which were then made subject of confirmation sampling and of rock geochemical investigations. Inasmuch as the geochemical prospecting technique specifically led to a detailed area which now serves as a target for drilling and other exploration efforts, the geochemical prospecting part of the program is considered successfully concluded and, therefore, reported on here. Whether the target area will turn out to host the deposit or not is, of course, of utmost importance to the Company, but is of less importance to this paper. We will describe the concepts, the planning, the execution, the analysis and the interpretation of this typical geochemical prospecting case. A number of people on the staff of International Oil & Gas, Inc. have participated in this prospect, as have students from Southeast Missouri State University and their professor, Gary M. Lowell. In addition, the Missouri Geological Survey has been most helpful with records and letters on the century-old prospecting and mining in the general area. Many valuable discussions have also been held with geologists from the industry who, from time to time, have visited the area, examined the property and reviewed the status of the project. The support and interest from all these parties has made it possible to pursue and expand this exploration concept from one of being just "more of the same kind" to the most chal-1enging and exciting with which this author has ever been involved, namely the prospect for tin porphyry deposits in the mid-continent United States.

The theory of cavity expansion in an infinite frictional soil mass whose strength is represented by a curved Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope has been used to predict with some confidence the cone resistance of a clean dry sand. Experimental data were obtained from cone penetration and pressuremeter tests on two sands, conducted in a large calibration chamber (CC) under carefully controlled placement and boundary conditions. A plane strain bearing capacity theory was developed, and to convert the results to axi-symmetric conditions, an empirical "shape factor" was used. In the paper, the theoretical background, experimental data, calculation procedure, and the results of the analysis are presented. In general, a reasonable validation of the cavity expansion approach to the bearing capacity of deep foundations has been obtained.

Drilling and blasting are key components of every hard-rock (i.e.,metal/nonmetal/coal) mining operation. Well-executed and maintained drilling and blasting can have a major positive impact on the overall success of such operations. This case study presents the implementation of a new drill and blast engineer position and systematic improvement of the drill and blast operations at a surface metal mine. The findings of and lessons learned from this case study can be applied toother mine operations to improve safety, production, efficiency, and cost savings. Focus areas for the project included refined communications, operational practices and procedures, planning, designing, and data collection and analysis. This case study showed improved efficiency in communication and planning among the engineers, operations team, and contractor groups over the course of the project. An increased awareness of long-term plans and needs for the drills and blasters reduced or eliminated existing delays. Test blasts that implemented new drill and blast designs and updated operational practices and procedures were tested to streamline the process. Constraints regarding explosive product shipments, geological considerations, and a uniform powder factor provided the basis for new blast designs.

"Shebandowan is about 600 miles west of Sudbury and 50 miles west of Thunderbay close to the trans Canada highway. Shebandowan Lake is about 38 miles long. The ore body is located between No. 1 and No. 2 shafts at the lower end of the lake. The economic mineralization lies between 200 and 2000 feet below. Years ago development of this ore body would probably have entailed draining the lake and using the open pit method to mine the ore.The water of Gold Creek which flows into Lake Shebandowan is representative of all local waters and is very close to rain water in purity. It is obvious that any industrial water discharged would have a measurable impact on the local water. The dissolved solids content is low and consistent with what is normally found in northern Ontario.A Koepe headframe is the only visible evidence of the mine from the lake. The Koepe headframe is esthetically pleasing and quiet in operation. The structure is of concrete to control noise. Noise from ore dumping is controlled by dumping underground to an ore pocket 400 feet below the surface. A 3600 foot conveyor belt carries the ore underground to the mill and is out of sight of the lake and the cottagers. The main objective to all our environmental efforts has been to preserve the natural beauty of the region. The mill is housed in a conventional metal-clad-siding building painted in esthetically pleasing colours. A single service building houses warehouse, dry storage and offices. The area surrounding the mill and service building is paved or grassed and drainage from this area is collected and pumped to the tailings area. Air intake silencers are installed on the compressors which are mounted at the back of the mill. Sound measurements taken on the lake indicate that noise suppression is excellent."

A soldagem com elevado aporte térmico é uma das alternativas adotadas pelos estaleiros para aumento da produtividade nas operações de união de materiais. No entanto, os ciclos térmicos gerados durante a soldagem podem provocar transformações microestruturais prejudiciais à tenacidade na zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Este estudo teve como principal propósito realizar a caracterização microestrutural e avaliar as propriedades mecânicas da ZAC do aço naval Sincron EH36 produzido na Usiminas por laminação controlada seguida de resfriamento acelerado em comparação com um aço de mesma classe de limite de escoamento produzido convencionalmente, ambos soldados pelo processo ao arco submerso em dois níveis de aporte térmico: 76 e 130 kJ/cm. Foi observado que a presença de uma microestrutura mais refinada nas diferentes regiões da ZAC, associadas ao menor tamanho de grão do metal base e ao menor carbono equivalente, foram os principais fatores que contribuíram para a excelente tenacidade da ZAC do aço Sincron em comparação ao aço convencional. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que é possível obter juntas soldadas com excelentes propriedades mecânicas ao se empregar aço Sincron para a soldagem com altos aportes de calor, e sua utilização pode ser uma estratégia para otimização dos tempos e custos de fabricação na indústria naval.

There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

This report contains the papers presented at the Technology Transfer Seminar on Ground Control Aspects of Coal Mine Design held by the Bureau of Mines on March 6, 1973, in Lexington, Ky. Seminar attendance consisted of representatives from the coal mining industry, universities, mining consultants, instrument manufacturers, and local, State, and Federal Government. The purpose of this meeting, one of a series of Technology Transfer seminars, was to provide the coal mining industry with detailed information about recently developed techniques, equipment, and instruments which can be used in the solution of coal mine design problems and to discuss results and direction of research in mine design. The report includes opening remarks by Joseph J. Yancik, Acting Assistant Director--Mining; an overview of the Federal Bureau of mines approach to mine design; three papers an problems associated with the design of panels; five papers on coal mine roof problems; three papers on long wall problems; and the comments made by- the participants on the Bureau-industry panel discussion.

"In January 1985, Equity Silver Mines Limited began operation of a cyanidation circuit to scavenge precious metals from the flotation tailings. At present, this process is treating 270,000 tonnes of tailings per month and is recovering in excess of 0.20 grams of gold per tonne. To obtain these results Equity is operating a carbon-in-leach circuit that utilizes pressure stripping, zinc precipitation acid washing and thermal reactivation. A cyanide destruction circuit is also required to minimize the deleterious effects on reclaim water in the flotation stage. This paper describes the existing scavenger plant, and details the start-up problems encountered and the modifications made to correct these problems.INTRODUCTIONEquity Silver Mines Limited , a 68% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited , is located 38 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The geographic location of Equity Silver Mines is shown in figure #1. In September 1980, production first began with the ore being supplied from the Southern Tail open pit. In March 1984, the Southern Tail deposit had reached its economic pit depth, and since then ore has been supplied by the Main Zone pit the gold mineralization in the Main Zone is less refractory than the Southern Tail and cyanidation of the flotation tailing appeared to be a viable alternative.An extensive test program was undertaken and the results confirmed that considerable gold and silver values were amenable to cyanide leaching. A feasibility study showed that these values could be economically recovered and the detailed engineering work began."

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.

Geologic, geotechnical and hydrologic studies were performed for the design of 115 deep, large diameter drilled shaft reinforced concrete foundations (6 to 12 feet) to support tall steel monopoles for a new 13-mile long 230/69kV transmission line in southwestern Arizona. The subsurface conditions along the alignment posed a wide range of challenges for performing investigation and design studies. These conditions include saturated, loose granular flood plain deposits with generally low lateral capacity, potential ground loss up to 23 feet due to occasional river flow (scour and embankment loss), liquefaction impacts from nearby active fault seismicity that can generate magnitude 6.5-7.0 earthquakes, and unsaturated alluvial and eolian sand-dominated soils to full depth with low lateral capacity. All conditions will require significantly deeper than normal foundation embedment (depth ranging from 22 to 77 feet) and will present construction difficulty due to ground instability from groundwater and dry soil sloughing. A phased investigation was performed to accurately characterize the conditions for design and construction, and included performing a review of existing data, detailed field geologic reconnaissance, a limited number of standard exploratory borings (limited access), seismic cone penetrometer soundings (SCPT) in saturated soils to better understand liquefaction and strength loss potential, and hydrologic analyses to estimate scour/ground loss potential. This paper describes the site conditions, presents details on the investigation team’s approach, documents findings in relation to deep foundation analysis and design, and discusses recommendations for foundation construction to help in reducing risk.

Graphite is soft and easily floatable but it is quite difficult to obtain high purity concentrate at coarse sizes. Chemical treatment can produce high grade concentrate but it is an expensive process. Graphite containing plus 96% fixed carbon (FC) with coarse flakes commands high price in international market. Such graphite concentrate containing plus 96% FC was produced in Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) by using newly developed reagent (mixture of different hydrocarbons and terpenes, IBM/D7) instead of commonly used frothers viz. pine oil, MIBC, kerosine etc. and regrinding in a special type of mill with special grinding media instead of grinding in a conventional ball/ rod mill followed by cleaning. Both the new reagent (frother) and special grinding media are inexpensive and readily available. The process is under patenting. This paper focuses application of this new grinding methodology for flake size protection, and the new reagent for selective flotation of high purity graphite.

Determining the minimum amount of inert material that can be used between explosive columns is a complex problem. Using too little inert material can result in detonator/primer failure, either by sympathetic detonation of or failure to fire of the subsequent explosive column(s). Propagation type failure results when inert material length between charges is small enough that the subsequent (delayed) deck fires more or less instantly. In this situation, the primer, detonator, or bulk product is initiated by the shock wave from the earlier firing deck. This type of failure may be un-noticed until the vibration/airblast report is examined.

Thallium is one of the rare metals that has come into commercial use within recent years . Its comparative scarcity , combined with a resemblance to the common metal lead , have retarded the development of uses for thallium . Although production is still measured in pounds rather than in tons , it is now finding application in a number of fields . Perhaps the earliest commercial use of thallium was as a constituent of optical glass of higher refractive power than similar glasses containing lead . One of the later applications to attract attention was the use of the oxysulphide in a sensitive electrical device similar to the selenium cell . The " Thalofide " cell , which was patented in 1919 , constituted for a time the most important outlet for thallium. During the next few years the limited use of thallium and its salts in other fields was insufficient to absorb an annual production of a few hundred pounds , and the price dropped from $ 16 or $18 per pound in 1922 to $ 5 per pound in 1924 . Beginning in 1925 several new uses were developed , especially as a poison for rodents and ants , and as a result the demand for thallium increased sufficiently to cause a recovery in price to the present level of from $12 to $15 per pound .

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a influência da temperatura de recozimento intercritíco na microestrutura e nas propriedades de um aço dual-phase. Para isto, amostras do aço em estudo foram recozidas intercriticamente a temperaturas entre 720 e 740°C. A quantificação da martensita foi realizada por estereologia quantitativa sobre imagens obtidas por sinal de elétrons secundários. Ensaios de tração e de estampabilidade foram realizados no material tratado e na condição de partida. Os resultados da quantificação mostraram aumento na fração de martensita com o aumento da temperatura de tratamento. Para o estudo da influência da microestrutura no comportamento mecânico, foi relacionada a fração de martensita com as propriedades mecânicas obtidas nos ensaios de tração e estampabilidade. As amostras recozidas intercriticamente apresentaram aumento nos limites de resistência e escoamento e diminuição dos alongamentos, total e uniforme, com o aumento da fração de martensita. A amostra de partida apresentou frações de martensita similares às observadas para a tratada a 740°C, entretanto com valores de resistência e escoamento inferiores e alongamento superior, sugerindo influência da morfologia nas respostas mecânicas do material. O material como recebido apresentou a melhor combinação entre resistência, alongamento e estampabilidade indicando que esta condição é mais indicada para o setor automotivo.
