On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

The Bureau of Mines has compiled coal reserve data for the United States as of January I, 1974, for bituminous and anthracite coalbeds 28 inches or more in thickness to a maximum depth of 1,000 feet and for Lignite beds 40 inches thick or greater. These data were organized by State, county, coalbed, and rank. To evaluate the reserve by sulfur content, the reserve and analytical data from the Bureau of Mines energy data bank were synthesized using computer techniques. The reserve base in the Eastern States was determined to be 202.3 billion tons. Bituminous coal accounts for the greatest reserve base: 161.5 billion tons of deep-minable coal, and 32.5 billion tons of strip-minable coal. Virtually all of the anthracite reserve base, 7.3 billion tons, is minable by underground methods. All of the lignite, 1 billion tons, is strip minable. Subbituminous coal is not significant in the Eastern United States, About 14 percent of the bituminous coal reserve base, 26.5 billion tons, contains 1.0 percent or less sulfur. About 87 percent of the anthracite reserve base, 6.3 billion tons, is low-sulfur coal.

The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

Knowing the origin of the relevant and irrelevant components of the nugget effect is essential to optimize the process under study. This paper describes the causes of the nugget effect and, its dependency on the sample support, sampling density, and on the QA/QC procedures. Several examples of natural and ?human? nugget effect are given. A method to estimate the magnitude of the relevant and irrelevant components is suggested. Finally, the economic consequences of misunderstanding the nugget effect are analysed.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015. Minerals are a fundamental component of the Nation" material and economic base. Without a continuous supply of minerals to meet growing and changing needs, the basic character of our society would be very different. The importance of minerals to the United States was reemphasized by the Congress in I970 when it enacted the Mining and Minerals Policy Act, which stated that it is the continuing policy of the Federal Government in the national interest to foster and encourage private enterprise in (I) the development of economically sound and stable domestic mining, minerals, metal and mineral reclamation industries, (2) the orderly and economic development of domestic mineral resources, reserves, and reclamation of metals and minerals to help assure satisfaction of industrial, security and environmental needs, (3) mining, mineral, and metallurgical research, including the use and recycling of scrap to promote the wise and efficient use of our natural and reclaimable mineral recources, and (4) the study and development of methods for the disposal, control, and reclamation of mineral waste products, and the reclamation of mined land, so as to lessen any adverse impact of mineral extraction and processing upon the physical environment that may result from mining or mineral activities.,.

Ore from the Hill 50 Gold Mine, consists essentially of pyrrhotite, with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and gold, replacing "jaspilite." The gold is associated with the sulphides as shotty particles. About 8 per cent. of the particles are less than '0.010'mm.The Hill 50 Gold Mine, at Boogardie in the Murchison goldfield, about 300 miles north-west of Kalgoorlie, was first operated in 1898. From 1898 to 1917 it yielded 20,000 short tons of ore for a recovery of 6,225' fine oz. gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 6.22 dwt. gold per ton.The present company since the beginning of its operations in September 1936 to June 30, 1954, produced 811,081 short tons of ore for a recovery of 242,554 fine oz. of gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 5.98 dwt. gold per ton.The grade of ore (recovery grade) has shown a remarkable variation with depth. From the 120 ft. Ievel to the 300 ft. level, it averaged about 7.5 dwt. Au per ton. Below the 300 ft. level it declined, and from 300 ft. to 400 ft. averaged 4.9 dwt. per ton, falling further with increasing depth to about 4.5 dwt. per ton at the '600 ft. level.On the 820 ft. level the grade improved sharply to about 14 dwt: per ton, and this grade has persisted down to and on the 1060 ft. level.The orebody has been described by Finucane (1953) as a series of lenses of finely banded jaspilite conformably enclosed by greenstones. The jaspilite is tightly folded and faulted and intruded by dykes of felspar porpnyry.Mineralization is practically restricted to the jaspilite.

"AbstractHigh strain dynamic pile tests (HSDPT) on driven piles have been carried out on a routine basis in Sweden for more than 30 years. The Swedish Commission on Pile research established, in the early 1980s, safety factors based on the percentage of piles tested. The safety factors could then be reduced, creating economic incentives for the contractor to carry out testing.Energy formulas adopted by our neighbour countries, Norway and Denmark, were not accepted in Sweden as a reliable method since the dynamic testing method was considered to be a more scientific and reliable method. It has become almost the only in-situ method used to verify geotechnical bearing capacity on driven piles.The typical Swedish geology of soft soils overlaying very hard strata makes it possible to verify high design loads, typically 20 kN per cm2 of pile cross sectional area for steel piles and 1,5 kN per cm2 for concrete piles.Conventionally a certain percentage of the piles have been tested in Sweden. The EC7, on the other hand states a number of piles to be tested, regardless of the total number of piles. The Swedish NA (National Annex) states a maximum distance between tested piles, which results in better distribution of the test piles over the foundation.For shaft-bearing piles in soft clays, dynamic pile tests have to be correlated by static load tests.Historical backgroundOn a research basis stress-wave measurements have been carried out for a long time in Sweden. One example is a project in the city of Gothenburg, conducted by Fellenius and Pejrud (1964). Strain gauges were glued on the reinforcement bars in 60 m long, precast concrete piles at 3 m and 25 m above the pile tip respectively. Evaluation was done with different methods such as dynamic formulas,stress-wave measurements and in addition compared with static load tests.In the 1975 Building Code in Sweden, driving criteria for concrete piles based on stress-wave theory were introduced, as summarized in Table 1. The driving criteria are intended for 3 and 4 tonne gravity hammers. For hydraulic rigs, which have free-falling hammers, the drop height indicated should be reduced to 80 % of the values in the table. The criteria were considered to include a safety factor of 3,0. For 330 - 450 kN pile load, pile with a standard a cross sectional area of 235 mm x 235 mm was used. For 600 kN load, the standard cross sectional area was 275 mm x 275 mm."

"This paper summarizes the Wren CAT (Clarifier and Accelerated Thickener) deep bed thickener operation at the EKATITM Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories. EKATITMs’ thickener project is presented in terms of initial design considerations and present day operating practices. A circuit description summarizes process equipment, reagent systems, and typical process conditions, and details of Wren CAT operating principles are provided. Operating strategies are discussed, with emphasis on process instrumentation and control and operating challenges.INTRODUCTIONThe EKATITM diamond mine, operated by BHP Diamonds, Inc., is located in the Northwest Territories near Lac De Gras, approximately 300 km NNE of Yellowknife, NT. 9000 dry metric tonnes of diamond-bearing kimberlite ore are processed daily. Processing operations commenced in October, 1998.The EKATITM process plant flowsheet features typical steps in diamond recovery plant design. Figure 1 shows the general plant flowsheet. Size reduction and feed preparation are accomplished by crushing, scrubbing, and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) through closed-circuit classification with vibratory screens. Heavy medium separation (HMS) is used as the initial stage of heavy mineral concentration. Secondary concentration is accomplished in the recovery plant by attrition milling; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation (both wet and dry); and X-ray sorting.The present budget throughput rate is 9000 dry tonnes per day. This will be increased to 18,000 tonnes during the first ten years of operation. Unlike most kimberlite treatment facilities, which process material from a single ore body, EKATITM’s process plant was designed to accommodate ore from five different kimberlite pipes, each with its own treatment characteristics.All processing, except for primary crushing, is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building."

In, one stage of the purification sequence of the zinc sulphate electrolyte used at Risdon, cobalt is, precipitated as cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, which is separated from the solution by filtration. Owing to the method of conducting the purification the filter cake contains much gypsum, unconsumed calcium hydroxide, basic zinc sulphate, and entrained zinc sulphate solution, Small amounts of iron and copper that have escaped previous purification steps are also precipitated with the cobalt as nitroso-,B-naphtholate. Thisprecipitate, normally carrying about 18% cobalt, is the raw material for the production of cobalt oxide, cobalt sulphate and cobalt metal.COBALT OXIDEThe main problem in the preparation of a reasonable grade of cobalt oxide from the filter cake is the economic separation ,of the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate from the gypsum. This was solved by the application of flotation. It was discovered that the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, under correct conditions, would float without any addition agent, giving a relatively high grade concentrate. A plant, was built and has been in operation since 1936. The filter cake is pulped with water and pumped to one of two mechanically agitated tanks, eath capable of holding one day's output. Sulphuric acid is added until the free acid concentration reaches about 3 gm. per litre. Basic zinc sulphate is dissolved and calcium hydroxide converted to gypsum. The pulp, carrying about 2t lb. of solids per gallon, is pumped at a suitable rate to the first of a series of 10 flotation, boxes.. The effects of P2OS or Na2O addition on the reaction rate of CO2 dissociation on the surface of FexO-base molten oxides was investigated at I 773K by isotope exchange method 1-6. The rate constant decreased with increasing P2Os content of molten oxides and the residual rate constant was observed at high P2OS content. On the other hand, the rate constant increased with increasing Na20 content for FexO-SiO2 melts, The rate constant was evaluated by the composition of oxides and the rate controlling step of CO2 dissociation was discussed.

The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

The Northland region of New Zealand has a complex geological history which has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Small mineral deposits have been discovered in the past, and some have been mined. Except for aggregates and very high quality china clay, mining is virtually nonexistent at present. Mercury mining is proposed from small deposits in the Kaeo area. Intensive exploration for epithermal precious metals deposits in the past seven years, combined with some recent geological mapping undertaken by the Geological Survey and University thesis students has added greatly to an understanding of Northland's geology. Mapping of the Whangaroa-Kaikohe map sheet at a scale of 1:100 000 by Brown and Laurenson Limited has enabled new geological information to be collated for the first time since 1961, when the last geological map was published. The 'Northland Allochthon' is now observed to be a series of four or more thrust sheets each containing predictable formations. High angle faulting contemporaneous with overthrusting has modified the thrust sheets, and established a series of horsts and grabens. The Pirau Fault is considered to be a major earth fracture.

You are a geologist, geometallurgist, or metallurgist/process engineer and are fortunate enough to work for an organisation who asks you to design/execute a geometallurgy program. What seems like a simple request is actually not a trivial exercise. æRecipeÆ style manuals are not readily available. However, many æexpertsÆ are lurking around willing to deliver solutions which will solve all of your problems. Even though similar ore deposit styles (e.g. porphyry Cu, IOCG, Ni-laterites, calcrete hosted U, etc.) have many similar characteristics, each ore deposit is unique. Hence your geometallurgy program needs to be æfit-for-purposeÆ.
