A determinação do consumo energético e o dimensionamento da etapa de moagem tem sido objeto de estudo de diversos pesquisadores desde o século XIX, iniciandose com Rittinger e Kick. Mais recentemente, outras técnicas, envolvendo modelagem matemática do processo têm sido aplicadas com sucesso. O material em estudo é um minério de ferro itabirítico da região de Morro do Pilar. Foram estudadas as etapas de moagem primária e remoagem. Diferentes metodologias foram utilizadas para determinação do consumo específico de energia na moagem primária, além da determinação dos parâmetros de quebra e seleção para diferentes colares de corpos moedores e otimização do circuito pré-dimensionado. Os resultados indicaram um consumo específico de energia pequeno para o minério em questão. Além disso, o teste de WI de Bond, com escalpe inicial na malha de controle, apresentou valores mais próximos do valor simulado.

This paper relates to the foundation of a steel structure located at the San Martin de la Vega (Madrid) amusement park. The structure has more than 100 supports with various loading conditions, including important horizontal and uplift forces. Additionally, the settlement tolerances are very strict. A massive gypsum formation with interbedded clay layers and random solution great voids at various levels constitute the soil. The foundation design has been conditioned large enough these difficulties (load conditions and soil problems). The piling machine used was powerful to drill through the soft rock (UCS up to 11Mpa). The integrity of each pile had to be guaranteed by continuous recording of drilling and concrete pouring parameters. In order to fulfil all those conditions, a STARSOL type-piling rig was used. More than 4500 meters of piles were performed. The diameters of the piles were 450 and 550-mm and their depths varies from 6 to 23 meters. All piles were reinforced over their full length.

O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo acerca da trefilabilidade de arames de aço semelhante ao SAE 1045, que são destinados ao atendimento da demanda do setor agropecuário. O trabalho envolveu a análise da produção dos arames a partir de matéria-prima advinda de aciaria elétrica, além das condições dos processos de conformação. O processo de trefilação foi mantido invariável, com as mesmas condições e parâmetros de reduções e lubrificação. Verificou-se a viabilidade de trefilação de ambos os materiais e a influência da maior fração volumétrica de perlita, através de análises conjugadas de propriedades mecânicas e condições microestruturais, resultando em valores mais elevados de resistência mecânica e menores valores de alongamento para os arames.

Viscosity of the slag is one of the central parameters when producing FeCr in submerged arc furnaces. It contributes to smelting behaviour and reduction kinetics of chromite ore as well as to the Cr recovery by influencing the separation of dispersed metal droplets from the slag. A typical FeCr process slag contains 5-10pct chromium oxides, CrO and CrO1.5. The neural network computation was applied to the evaluation of viscosity for slags containing chromium oxides, and the prediction of viscosity in FeCr process slag was conducted. The main results in this estimation were that the chromium oxides in FeCr process slag lower its viscosity, and that the effect of CrO on the viscosity decrease is greater than that of CrO1.5.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixers. Recent experience with both large and small plants has shown that this is not the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers. Both of these lead to either reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Further, changes to the method of specification and selection of both primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. Observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under ‘steady state’ conditions. Four different transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze, and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers and these change along the length and with phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients has been developed which allows plant performance to be improved beyond ‘standard’ expectations. The design and selection of the settler internals is described.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-L Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples. This report discusses research being done by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch und the Applied Physics Branch of the Bureau of Mines to deter-mine the most effective uses of explosives in shooting oil and gas wells, as measured in terms of rates of production from the wells. An experimental investigation of the effects of detonating explosives in shallow holes drilled in rocks, chosen to be similar to those forming oil and gas reservoirs, forms the basis of this study. Records obtained from strain gages placed in the rock around the experimental shots permit determination of the generation and propagation characteristics of the strain wave. Water-injection tests made on the test holes before and after shooting allow the increase in fluid conductivity resulting from the shot to be determined. By rotating these data to the physical properties of the rock, and by conducting shooting experiments over the range of rock types common to oil and gas reservoirs, it is expected that relationships between the fluid conductivity and the properties of the explosive and rock can be developed and used for designing efficient shots for oil and gas wells. Four series of experiment.al tests were completed during the summer of 1949 and are described herein. The results of these tests confirmed the feasibility of the experimental approach and permitted outlining the plans for future research discussed in this report. "The research is aimed at solving the problem of increasing the extraction of gold from refractory ores, which are the main source of growth in gold production in the next decades. The purpose of the research is the development and scientific substantiation of the reagent modes for flotation extracting of gold from refractory ores using eco-friendly low-cost herbal modifiers (HM), providing increase in gold recovery and quality of gold concentrates. In the course of research laboratory techniques for the preparation of experimental samples of HM were developed, which included the sequence of operations of grinding Heraclium leaves and stems grinding, 2-stages extraction at a temperature of 50-60 °C, short-term ultrasonic treatment, filtration and subsequent unification of extracts. According to the developed method, the experimental samples of HM and conducted research were tested to analyze their sorption and flotation activity related to the extraction of gold from refractory gold ores.New data on adsorption and flotation properties of Heraclium stems and leaves extracts (HSE) in selective flotation of Au-sulfide minerals were obtained using UV-spectroscopy, scanning electronic and laser microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The dimensions and shapes of adsorbed hydrophilic films of herbal reagents were identified and mechanism of formation of stable insoluble compounds on the surface of minerals in flotation was explained.Research flotation tests carried out on samples of refractory gold ore of one of Russia deposits showed the possibility of effective use of herbal modifiers to improve qualitative and quantitative indicators of enrichment compared with the standard reagent regime. New reagent modes, using herbal modifiers in an amount of 5 to 10 ml of the extract (300 - 600 g / t, respectively) improves the quality of the concentrate: gold content attains 14.7 g / t, 1.34 times higher than in the baseline experiment and provides a gain of 3.13% extraction.The developed reagent regime with herbal modifiers is the author's original design, patented (patent of the Russian Federation) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. Actual application of new plant extracts as modifiers in flotation of sulfide minerals is the possibility of replacing of highly toxic chemical compounds by environmentally safe substances of plant origin. Implementation of the developed methods of extracting gold from refractory minerals with herbal modifiers will help to improve gold recovery at 3-5% and the quality concentrate of not less than 1.2 times, leading to higher productivity and a reduction of the negative man-made effects on the environment ."

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The cut-off/cut-over grade policy produced caters for multiple processing streams and stockpiles.Finally we demonstrate the quality of the algorithm by comparing some results with a well-known mathematical solution.CITATION:Myburgh, C A, Deb, K and Craig, S, 2014. Whenever misfired holes or portions of misfired holes remain after a blast is fired, a hazardous situation exists until the unfired explosive materials have been disposed of properly. Yet, there are so many factors that can contribute to misfires that it is impossible to give blanket instructions on how to handle them. To complicate matters, misfires today are rare due to reliable blasting products. As such, it isn’t very surprising that many blasters have never had to deal with a misf i re condition. While the likelihood of a misfire occurrence is minimal, you should always be pre p a red to handle a misfire should you be involved in such an event. To begin, every blaster and blasting org a n i z a t i o n should develop a misfire policy which contains the company’s safe operating pro c e d u res, emergency contact list, as well as any regulatory compliance re q u i re m e n t s . Tailgate and/or company-wide safety meetings should communicate the company’s contingent misfire pro c ed u res and any special site-specific precautions BEFORE the start of any project.

"A. larger enrollment and a greater number of man-hours of employment by the enrolled companies were the outstanding features of the National Safety Competition of 1942, an annual safety contest conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, for the promotion of safety among workers in the mines and quarries of the United States. The accident-frequency and accident-severity rates were somewhat higher than in 1941, but the frequency of accidents in relation to the number of man-hours worked was strikingly lower than in the earlier years of the 18-year period during which the contests have been conducted.Companies that enroll in the National Safety Competition compete for a bronze trophy known as the ""Sentinels of Safety."" Six of these trophies are provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER annually for award by the Bureau of Mines. The trophies for 1942 wore won by an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, a lignite mine in North Dakota, an underground metal mine in Tennessee, a limestone mine in Ohio, an open-cut metal mine in Minnesota, and a lime-:tone quarry in Pennsylvania. The trophies are presented to the companies for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The contest rules state that a mine or quarry must have at least 25 men employed underground or in the pit for at least 100 days, and the plant must be in operation 30,000 or more man-hours to be eligible for a trophy. The rank of mines and quarries is determined by accident-severity rates, or, in the case of accident-free records, by the number of man-hours worked."

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,938,200 for the 1.03-million-ton-per-year (MJ.Vl tpy) mine to $31,435,500 for the 3.09 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,607,200 to $51,982,000 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $9.11 to $8.06 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

There are several methods available to estimate deflection and ultimate Capacity of laterally loaded piles. In this investigation an attempt has been made to verify the existing methods for prediction of ultimate lateral resistance and deflection with the laboratory and field test results reported in the literature. A 75 pile loading test data obtained from the literature was used to evaluate two methods designed to predict the ultimate lateral resistance of rigid piles and three methods designed to predict the lateral deflections of rigid piles and four methods designed to predict the lateral deflection of flexible piles subjected to lateral loads. The accuracy and precision of each method is quantified statistically. The statistical results of the overall analysis indicate that the mean values of the ratios of predicted to measured lateral capacities vary from 0.62 to 1.14 with an average of 0.88. However, the settlement predictions were much more widely scattered than the ultimate load predictions and in general all the methods have a tendency to under predict the deflections. A new method is proposed by modifying the Broms's method to estimate the lateral deflections of free headed rigid and flexible piles separately. The proposed modified methods were found to be reasonably good in comparison to existing methods and to overestimate deflections.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement process must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes in order to pursue better results over time. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators, such as P80 and fines percentage.

A new low-dilution fusion method which has been successfully used for accurate determination of the major oxide components of silicate rocks, is applicable to rapid, accurate determination of trace or minor eiements in mineral exploration samples. Limit of detection is in many cases less than 5 ppm. Either rapid, approximate measurement and calculation methods (suitable for geochemical exploration), or more accurate methods (applicable to orebody evaluation studies) may be used.Rapid methods are described for nickel in rocks and sulphides containing 10 ppm to >2 per cent Ni, and for gallium. The rarely-determined element gallium is an example of a constituent which may be easily investigatedby XRF using the LiB02 fusion disc, which is a permanent, easily-stored analytical sample available for later rapid or accurate analyses. The method is applicable to over 30 elements at levels encountered in mineral exploration.
