The West Red River oil field, in Tillman County, Okla. (fig. 1), is approximately 8 miles northwest of the town of Burkburnett, Wichita County, Tex. The wells are in the river bed between the medial line and the south bank of the Red Diver. In the following discussion of the geology, development, and exploita-tion of the field, the authors have, by means of structure maps, crews sections through various parts of the reservoir and tabulated development data and production statistics, recorded salient information on a field whose development was unique and in some respects unusual for fields discovered and initially developed more than a quarter of a century ago. The total oil production from Government-operated leases; considered in the report was 6,900,440 barrels to January 1, 1947, from 3 proved acres developed by H1 oil-producing wells, 10 gas-injection wells, and 5 nonproductive wells. A calculated past recovery of 60P, barrels of oil per acre-foot and an estimated ultimate recovery of 6.S0 barrels of oil per acre-foot under present gas-injection methods begun in 1929 in shown.

In the last several years, the coal mining industry has made significant changes in the design of longwall mining systems to make them more productive. Some changes, such as increasing the length of the coal faces and increasing the capacity of the face conveyors, have resulted in problems with achieving sufficient motor torque to start and operate the longwall face conveyors. Other changes, such as increasing the size and/or decreasing the percent impedance of longwall power center transformers, have resulted in problems with the short-circuit currents on the transformer secondaries exceeding the interrupting ratings of the molded case circuit breakers used to protect the secondary circuits. A survey of 24 longwall mining systems in northern West Virginia was conducted to investigate both problems. The results of the survey are presented and analyzed. Several recommended solutions to the problems are presented to enable the coal mining industry to design safe and productive longwall mining systems.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar o modelo proposto por Kasuya et al para prever as durezas máximas da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em juntas soldadas de um aço com médio teor de carbono através de ensaios empíricos. Para isto, se faz necessário o cálculo da energia de soldagem, quando foram testados modelos apresentados por Marques e Modenesi e também o modelo proposto por Perdigão. As juntas soldadas foram produzidas usando chapas de aço SAE 1045 com espessura de 12,7 mm como material base, chanfro de 70º e arame sólido do tipo ER70S-6. Para mudar as condições de resfriamento das juntas soldadas, foram testadas variações nos parâmetros de soldagem, tais como: energia de soldagem, taxa de resfriamento e temperaturas de pré-aquecimento e interpasses. Foram feitos experimentos com e sem pré-aquecimento e testados pós-aquecimento e alívio de tensões. As amostras da zona fundida e da ZTA tiveram as durezas medidas e foram analisadas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Em linhas gerais, os resultados empíricos para a dureza na ZTA seguem a mesma tendência prevista pelo modelo de Kasuya et al, mas observam-se desvios na proporcionalidade validando a equação parcialmente para o material estudado. Também foi possível constatar que para o cálculo da energia de soldagem são adequados os modelos propostos por Perdigão e Marques e Modenesi.

Mining method selection is the first and most important problem in mine design. In this selection some of the parameters such as geological and geotechnical properties, economic parameters and geographical factors are involved. The mining engineer must balance the input parameters and select the method that appears to be the most suitable; mining method selection is both an art and a science. Distinguishing all parameters that have an effect in mining method selection and in the determination of weighting factors of any parameter is a difficult task in an ordinary environment. This paper attempts to determine important parameters that impact on the mining method selection and demonstrates the calculation of the weighting factors for each selected parameter. This study has been directed to the research of a methodology for the selection of an optimal mining method. Different fuzzy methods are presented as an innovative tool for criteria aggregation in mining decision problems. Two methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making are used for selecting the optimal method with which to mine anomaly No. 3 of the Gol-Gohar iron mine. This paper finally presents a comparison of the selection methodologies and further discusses the most appropriate method investigated.

A system of steel sheeting and multiple levels of high capacity double corrosion protected soil anchors were used to restrain a major slope failure that occurred at the base of the Watchung Mountains mid-way through construction of a 650,000 SF retail center along Route 22 in Watchung, New Jersey. The implementation of a design-build earth retaining structure was necessary to stabilize and repair the disturbed mountainside in a timely fashion to permit completion of the retail center on a fast track schedule. The tied back steel sheetpile wall was approximately 2,000 feet long and varied in height from 12 to 25 feet. The hillside extended approximately 350 feet above and 600 feet beyond the wall with the main failure scarp extending 50 feet above and 90 feet beyond. The wall was constructed in a top-down manner and required the installation of 475 anchors to resist loads of up to 70 kips/ft produced by the creeping hillside and groundwater flows from both a series of springs and steady state seepage through an inclined zone of fine sand. Incorporation of a unique tie point connection eliminated the need for a waler, facilitating and simplifying modifications to anchor locations based on anchor load test results and conditions encountered during construction. Post grouting also proved to be an essential element in the successful construction. This paper presents the design and the construction methods used to restrain the significant earth lateral loads produced by a slope failure using steel sheeting tied back with high capacity soil anchors with anchor loads distributed to the sheeting through a unique tie point connection on a fast track schedule. Installation techniques, testing programs, and construction quality control are also discussed.

Nas últimas décadas o setor siderúrgico vem desenvolvendo aços com maior valor tecnológico, surgindo assim várias classes, entre elas os aços avançados de alta resistência, onde encontra-se o aço bifásico ou “Dual Phase” (DP). Este aço é caracterizado por uma microestrutura ferrítica-martensítica, associada a uma matriz ferrítica com ilhas dispersas de martensita. Neste trabalho utilizou-se amostras de um aço baixo C e Mn, com micro adição de Nb e Mo, em desenvolvimento, onde se propôs uma avaliação da evolução microestrutural e propriedades mecânicas das amostras extraídas após a laminação a quente, a frio, seguida de recozimento intercrítico, em escala laboratorial, com auxílio de forno Mufla e um equipamento de análise termomecânica (TMA), resultando em taxas de aquecimento distintas, onde selecionou 7 temperaturas de encharque distintas e subsequente resfriamento com patamar isotérmico a 600°C por 20 minutos, onde observou-se que para esse ciclo a microestrutura com aspectos mais característicos de um DP se deu em tratamentos com temperatura de encharque entre 760 e 800°C.

A Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) possui uma Oficina de Manutenção Mecânica Central que fornece serviços de reparo, fabricação e manutenção de conjuntos mecânicos e componentes. A usinagem é um dos setores de maior demanda durante o reparo na Oficina e é considerada o grande gargalo entre as etapas de reparo/fabricação. Na busca por uma melhora na qualidade do atendimento e dos serviços prestados, o trabalho teve como objetivo identificar e implementar um novo sistema de medição para o Controle de Qualidade da Oficina Mecânica, reduzindo a demanda de inspeções dimensionais e geométricas para o setor de Usinagem. Com a compra dos instrumentos de medição tridimensional, o Laser Tracker e o Braço de Medição, foi possível aumentar a disponibilidade da usinagem, diminuir o tempo de inspeção de peças, acelerar o processo de decisão dos reparos, reduzir o tempo de entrega dos equipamentos, aumentar a confiabilidade das inspeções, além de e efetuar eventuais serviços de medição em campo.

Dentre as etapas de pelotização de minério de ferro, a fase de mistura tem grande importância devido ser responsável por dar homogeneidade a aos insumos e minério que serão processados nas etapas seguintes. Desta forma ela ajuda a garantir a boa formação das pelotas verdes e seu posterior endurecimento na etapa de queima. No desenvolvimento de misturadores, o auxílio de ferramentas de simulação são uteis para o correto dimensionamento destes equipamentos. Nos últimos anos a utilização do método dos elementos discretos (DEM) tem sido implementada para este fim e por isto vários cuidados têm sido tomados para ter-se resultados compatíveis com o comportamento real das partículas. Entre os fatores que podem inviabilizar o uso do método dos elementos discretos, o tempo e capacidade de processamento computacional tem sido um dos mais impactantes. Assim, este trabalho foi desenvolvido de forma a avaliar a influência do tamanho das partículas no resultado de capacidade de mistura de um misturador horizontal. Para isto, foi feito o escalonamento do modelo de um misturador e testado dois tamanhos de partícula avaliando o comportamento da mistura ao longo do tempo e o seu índice de mistura Lacey. Como resultado, pode-se verificar que o tamanho da partícula tem influência direta no resultado da simulação e que cuidados devem ser tomados no escalonamento destas para que haja compatibilidade entre as simulações e o comportamento real do sistema.

Magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) are used with continuous mining machines (CMMs) to protect miners from striking and pinning accidents. Generators are used in a PDS to create magnetic fields covering the space around a CMM. The PDS determines the proximity of a miner relative to the CMM based on the magnetic flux density detected by a miner-wearable component (MWC) and simultaneously alerts the miner and stops the motion of the CMM if the miner is within a proximity that creates a striking hazard. A stable magnetic field is essential to the accuracy of the proximity calculations performed by the PDS. This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the magnetic influence of two types of steel structures found near a CMM— the body of the CMM itself and the wire mesh used for roof and rib control. The results show that the steel of the CMM body can change the magnetic field distribution and also alter electrical parameters of a PDS by changing its generator current. The study also shows that, depending on the distance between the wire mesh and a generator, the magnetic field can also be altered.

Research efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Mines include running a series of displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element models to simulate the gateroad design at an underground coal mine in northwestern Colorado. The initial mine design is a yield-abutment chain pillar arrangement in a three-entry, longwall gateroad system. Pressure effects from mining the first and second panel were recorded using borehole pressure cells (BPCs). These field data were then compared directly to the model output. Observed yielding in the field was approximated by reducing material property values and/or removing pillar elements in the model. Model results using this calibration technique mirrored the field measurements consistently. Using the calibrated model parameters, a suite of models was run simulating an experimental entry design: exchanging the yield and abutment pillar locations. These model results reflect a 20¬to 33-percent reduction in core stresses in the yield pillar during mining of the second panel. Improved pillar and entry conditions are suggested by these predictive results. The design modifications were then implemented at the mine along a 150-m (500-ft) test section. Field observations and measurements from the experimental design test site compared favorably with trends of the model predictions.

The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese in the western United States, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined. and obtained samples of ore from two properties in the vicinity of Barstow, San Bernardino County, Calif. In addition to these, samples from two other properties in the same vicinity were submitted by the owners. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration by ore dressing. The Big Reef manganese claims axe about 140 miles east of Barstow, Calif. The claims were leased by W., E. Thurber of San Gabriel, Calif., from the owner, C. S. VanDoren of Daggett., Calif. Manganese oxides occur as a replacement deposit in heavily brecciated andesite along a fault plane. Four samples were taken by an examining engineer of the Bureau of Mines from the ore zone, which, when composited, were representative of all the exposed ore. Preliminary tests were made on lot B, and final tests wore made on the composite sample. The Trans-Oceanic property is about 20 miles southeast of Barstow, near Newberry, in the. Pisgah mining district, Calif. The sample, submitted by the owners, was taken from a 1,000-ton reject clump from a hand-sorting operation. The ore occurs as a replacement of rhyolite.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. Coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. Scrap, ground, and the poorer qualities of block mica, which are less essential to the military program, are not considered in this paper. Os parâmetros influenciadores do processamento mineral para a concentração magnética, como granulometria das partículas, fluxo de alimentação da polpa, susceptibilidade magnética, atuam de forma conjunta em uma planta de beneficiamento. Foram analisadas amostras de polpa contendo sulfetos de níquel, cobre e metais preciosos em seis amostragens objetivando medir a eficiência de um separador magnético de tambor de 750 Gauss em um circuito primário de britagem. O rendimento do equipamento na planta industrial foi comparado com os parâmetros medidos em laboratório. Os resultados obtidos da granulometria médias das partículas da polpa para 80% e material passante (P80) foram: 150 µm, 300 µm, 163,6 µm, 146,1 µm, 287,5 µm e 164,8 µm, e a taxa de alimentação do circuito variou entre 30,2 tph e 55,2 tph, com pressão de lavagem média de 1,0 kg/cm3. As amostras foram submetidas ao balanceamento metalúrgico utilizando o software Bilmat 9.5, após os resultados dos ensaios de caracterização: ICP-metais básicos, Satmagan e LECO-S. O percentual médio de recuperação magnética do laboratório foi de 80,1%, enquanto na planta a média foi de 96,38%, com a eficiência da planta em torno de 20,8% superior à recuperação magnética em laboratório.

The purpose of the initial research performed under this contract was to determine the margins of safety in explosion-proof (XP) enclosures, which were designed and certified according to the current schedule (Schedule 2G). Results from this work provide baseline data on the current schedule, from which a new schedule can be formulated to give equal or greater levels of safety. Results and discoveries in the initial work led to an expansion of the contract to cover, additionally, weld quality in enclosure fabrication, reliability of enclosures with windows and lenses, and performance tests for enclosure qualification. Finite element calculations and hydrostatic tests revealed wide variations in the margins of safety in the enclosures studied; however, only one enclosure had a safety factor which was less than one. Results from a weld quality survey led to the recommendation of AWS Welding Standard D14.4 for the fabrication of XP enclosures. Based on other work, accelerated aging tests were recommended for qualifying plastics and adhesives that are used in some enclosures, and a Structural Performance Test was developed to test enclosure strength for a minimum static pressure of 150 psig.

Traditionally, dithiocarbonates (xanthates) have been the preferred collectors for the flotation of platinum-bearing sulphides. However, collector development has led to trithiocarbonates (TTC), which have proven to be very effective bulk sulphide collectors. The interest in TTC flotation behaviour is currently focused on the interaction of these collectors with other collectors, specifically the dithicarbonates. Batch-flotation research has shown synergism to exist among dithiocarbonate, dithiophosphate and trithiocarbonate collectors. Increased sulphide recoveries, both for the first-minute and final concentrate, were realized using mixtures of these collectors relative to the standard.

La determinación del cuarzo es un problema dentro de la Higiene Industrial, puesto que este mineral se convierte en una de las enfermedades ocupacionales causadas por la inhalación de pequeñas partículas de cuarzo encontradas en el aire. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia y peligrosidad de los polvos del mineral a través de la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo en los polvos industriales, ya que el riesgo de adquirir silicosis es proporcional a la concentración de cuarzo en los polvos ambientales. Existen tres métodos para la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo: El método químico, el de difracción de rayos X y el petrográfico. El método que presenta mejores beneficios es el de N. A. Talvitie, puesto que se basa en la propiedad del ácido fosfórico, donde se forma complejos solubles en agua con los silicatos y óxidos metálicos, quedando el cuarzo prácticamente inalterado.
