The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

Most mines in the Bundamba, North Ipswich, and Rosewood districts of the West Moreton coalfield of south eastern Queensland have installed washing plants during the last five years. Many problems were encountered in their installation, including the small size of washing plant required in many cases, the economical minimum ash content under present and future market requirements, production from a one-product washbox of large and small coal of quality to satisfy both markets, measures to avoid adding unnecessary moisture to the washed slack coals, and excessive middlings in some coals or soft clay in others.INTRODUCTIONIt was fortunate for Brisbane, which was to become the capital of a new State, Queensland, in 1859, and grow into a city of over half a million people by the time of its centenary, that coal was found in abundance almost on its doorstep near Ipswich, the first mine being opened at Redbank in 1843. This was followed by the opening of many more mines in that district and, some 40 years later, in the nearby Rosewood district where high-volatile gas coal was produced (Fig. 1). These discoveries ensured a supply of reasonably priced coal (currently about 85/- per ton delivered) in Brisbane, but the quality is inferior to that of other coals mined in Queensland beyond economic range of Brisbane.Various factors led to an increase in the average ash content of the West Moreton coals during and after the war. Between 1940 and 1952 the gasworks coals rose in average ash from 13 8 per cent to 23·9 per cent and the powerhouse coals from 17·1 per cent to 27·1 per cent. This drift was arrested by the installation of 28 screening and picking plants from 1952 onward, but it became obvious that mechanical cleaning of the coals was essential due to the competitive market for coal and the worsening quality of reserves.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, ROMA, Norway, furnace, fines The ROMA project is a competence project on optimizing the usage of raw materials and energy in the ferromanganese, silicon, and aluminium industries. One of the items investigated in this project is the effect of fines on the furnace, and the usage of agglomerates versus lumpy ore. From lab-scale experiments it is shown, that for the charge to agglomerate in the furnace, the charge has to be exposed to a temperature higher than about 1200°C, independent of fines content. The fines less than 1 mm also showed higher agglomeration properties, compared to 2?4 mm, which showed no agglomeration property at all. The properties of agglomerates are very dependent on the pre-treatment of the agglomerate. Sinter and pellets, which have been heated to high temperatures, show a better strength, but also a lower CO reactivity. Sinter also shows a lower melting temperature compared to the ore.

As ligas Ni-Ti com composição em torno de 55% de Ni em peso sofrem influência nas temperaturas de transformação de fase quando submetidos a tratamentos térmicos de recozimento na faixa de temperatura de 300ºC a 500ºC. O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar a influência do tratamento térmico de recozimento a 350°C onde os CP´s de uma liga NiTi mantidos por tempos de 10 minutos, 1 hora e 24 horas. Os efeitos do tratamento são avaliados com base nas temperaturas de transformação de fase, medida por meio de Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC). Os resultados revelaram o maior aumento das temperaturas de transformação de fase para amostra com menor tempo de resfriamento em relação a amostra sem tratamento térmico.

Early evaluations of Pasquia Hills kerogen shale deposits by Geological Survey of Canada, Saskatchewan Geological Survey, Manitoba Energy and Mines and Sun Oil Company, using modified Fischer Assay, Rock-Eval and other techniques, estimated recoverable reserves of about 2.6x109 barrels of oil in areas favorable for strip-mining; each metric ton of ore was determined to yield about 30 L to 50 L of shale oil remarkably high in aromatic compounds. Western Petrochemical Corp. (WPC) is holding two Oil Shale Exploration Permits covering about 76,635 hectares in the Pasquia Hills Region of eastern Saskatchewan and conducting a 15-corehole drilling program to determine stratigraphic correlation on both first and second white specks kerogen shale. In this program, correlation will be established between oil yield and oil quality, using different retort techniques, including modified Fischer Assay, steam retort and Rock-Eval. Results will lead to further resource evaluation and to a preliminary engineering design for a shale processing plant, including selection of retort process, upgrading of shale oil to petrochemical feedstock, hydrogen management, energy balance and evaluation of environmental impact.

Thousands of miners, construction workers, and truck drivers are exposed to diesel exhaust particles. Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is a probable human carcinogen and stringent occupational and environmental standards have been established or are planned worldwide. Modifications in fuels and diesel engine designs have reduced emissions, but may not be enough to comply with the tightest standards. Post-combustion aftertreatment devices are likely necessary for many engine operators. However, even the most common and well studied aftertreatment devices fail from time to time. The objective of this study was to design, construct, and test an electrostatic aftertreatment device to treat DPM. An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was designed and constructed to capture DPM from diesel exhaust, and different configurations were tested to optimize its performance. DPM was produced by a 6 kW diesel-powered electric generator and directed to the ESP through a short section of galvanized steel pipe after the muffler. Number and mass removal efficiencies were measured with a condensation particle counter (CPC) and by sampling through a stainless steel cassette and collecting the DPM on Teflon filters. Particle size distributions were measured with and without control using a 6-stage cascade impactor. The experiments were performed with the engine running at idle and also at medium load. The results show that our first generation ESP provides 60 percent mass removal efficiency, and up to 80 percent number removal efficiency. Power consumption was generally low, about 20 to 30 watts, to achieve these levels of performance.

The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

Three stages are involved in the complete design and evaluation of an open cut mine. These are:1. design of the optimu,m ultimate pit, and selectionof the optimum mill capacity,2. development of production schedules, with intermediate pit designs, and3. evaluation of the project, based on factors from stages 1 and 2, by means of discounted cash flow analysis.Stage 1 requires relatively complete information on metal distribution, metallurgical performance, and cost factors, which is used to design a series of pits, corresponding to a range of milling rates.For each milling rate considered there is a unique pit design which maximizes operating profitability. The computer outlines this design (in terms of size, shape, and location; tons and grade of ore; and tons of waste), by considering the effect on profitability of mining each block in the mineralized inventory in relation to every other block which would be affected by its removal.The computer selects only those blocks for mining which result in an overall increase in profitability, maintaining pre-determined wall slope conditions throughout.Both operating profitabilities and capital costs increase with throughput, and the two curves will combine to produce a flat peak in net profitabilities at a certain rate, with its associated pit design.Stage 2 can maximize head grades early in the life of the operation. This increases the projected present value, but there are good arguments for maintaining steady head grades throughout the life of the mine.A modification of the programme used in Stage 1 is used here.Stage 3 is a conventional discounted cash flow analysis, using factors obtained in stages 1 and 2. It can be computerised, but a manual treatment is probably just as fast overall.

Frequentemente surgem discussões sobre a utilização de tecnologias mais limpas em todos os segmentos de mercado. A indústria de transformação por estar relacionada ao aumento crescente na geração de resíduos sólidos. Atualmente, toma como necessária ter um foco importante na busca pelo desenvolvimento sustentável. Este trabalho tem como objetivo comparar dois materiais, sendo a fibra de vidro e a fibra de Basalto tendo como base a análise do ciclo de vida (ACV), por meio das análises do inventário e dos impactos. De acordo com os dados obtidos estima-se que o gasto energético para produção da fibra de vidro é aproximadamente 3 vezes maior que a fibra de basalto. Segundo a participação percentual da produção das fibras nos impactos ambientais, a fibra de basalto apresenta os melhores indicadores positivos em relação à fibra de vidro. Como análise preliminar o objetivo deste trabalho foi alcançado, apresentando que os impactos gerados pela fibra de basalto são menores que as da fibra de vidro.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

Potassium ferrate is an excellent multifunctional reagent for wastewater treatment, but its preparation is crucial. The improved hypochlorite oxidation method was used to prepare potassium ferrate in this study. Iron nitrate, the preferred iron source, was added into hypochlorite solution and then the stabilization agent was added during the purification process of product. The influence of available chlorine content, iron molecular proportion, reaction temperature and reaction time on potassium ferrate preparation was investigated. The optimal condition for potassium ferrate preparation is 15% of available chlorine content , 0.6 of iron molecular proportion , 30i of reaction temperature , 45min of reaction time. The yield of potassium ferrate is about 67% with high purity (> 99%). The structure and performances of the product was characterized by XRD, EDX, SEM, TG and IR and the results show that the prepared product is consistent with the properties of potassium ferrate(VI).

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. Modem mineral exploration and development takes place within a data-rich context underpinned by a wide range of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technologies. This leads to requirements for consistent and explicit methods by which the relative risks - or success probabilities - of exploration programs can be assessed and communicated. Bayesian risk assessment methods are outlined which provide a starting point for this more rigorous approach to exploration investment.   Effective governance of information technologies becomes a core function of the modem competitive Board. As such it becomes a component of any business audit and any assessment of the quality and success potential of a company. Limited data however suggest that the average Board may be under-represented in this increasingly critical skill area.

"The benefits and advantages of pre-competitive, collaborative industry/university research are not always well appreciated. This paper presents the case study of a current collaborative project between CAMIRO-Metallurgical Processing Division and McGill University that is investigating the understanding and prevention of sphalerite activation in lead and copper-lead flotation circuits. The benefits of the research findings to the sponsors can be maximized by an approach which links the researchers themselves with the sponsors at frequent, interactive project review sessions. Some examples of the findings and their application to industry are also presented along with a general update on CAMIRO-MPD.INTRODUCTIONThe history of Canadian efforts in the area of collaborative pre-competitive research is not long when compared to Australia (AMIRA) and Britain (MIRO). AMIRA (Australian Mineral Industry Research Association) began over 40 years ago and has had a well recognized role in bringing together industrial sponsors and researchers to fund a large variety of very significant development projects in that country, The total AMIRA funding effort for mineral processing work currently exceeds some $Aus 40 million with new projects valued at about $Aus 12 million initiated each year. This high level of commitment by industry has contributed to establishing Australian researchers and their facilities as among the best in the world.Canadian companies have traditionally funded much of their R & D in-house with extensive facilities and large funding commitments. The past 2 decades have seen most of these facilities disappear. The current situation is one in which only the largest integrated metal and mining companies have retained their own R & D groups (e.g. INCO, Falconbridge, Noranda). Industry-funded research at universities was primarily through individual efforts by the mining companies and rarely included collaboration with other mining companies, equipment or chemical suppliers, or engineering firms."
