The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

The Ministry of Commerce has been carrying out an evaluation of the resources of the Northwest Nelson region. In part this was to revisit the issues covered in the earlier proposal to close part of Northwest Nelson to mining under section 24 of the Mining Act (1971) initiated in 1990. In addition, the option of using GIS to integrate a variety of spatial data sets to aid policy formulation could be tested. The Northwest Nelson assessment would be a useful trial. The subsequent national park proposal provided a major impetus to the project and resulted in the scope of the study being broadened to include all energy and minerals resources.

In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. "The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

"Comparable transaction analysis is the best known of the market approaches to valuation of exploration-stage mineral properties. The analysis of option and farm-in agreements can also provide useful guidance to valuators. While such approaches can be distorted by incomplete analysis, market-based methods are capable of providing consistent, credible results when carried out carefully with due consideration paid to all factors which buyers and sellers consider when dealing in the real market. IntroductionMineral properties without defined resources present one of the most challenging tasks to the mineral valuator. This paper will concentrate on market-based approaches to valuation of such properties. Other authors at MM2000 presented papers on cost and income approaches. Sorentino (2000) also provides a useful overview with some provacative commentary on methods.Market based-approaches are based on the principle of substitution and include such techniques as: comparable transaction analysis (sometimes referred to as sales comparison analysis); farm-in commitment (or option agreement) analysis; rules-of-thumb; and comparable market value analysis.Are there any valuation standards available to assist the valuator? In Canada there are none that apply to the valuation of mineral assets or securities. This problem is being addressed, at least in part, by the CIMVal Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)1. Further, the recently established Canadian Association of Mineral Valuators will be giving consideration to the adoption of valuation standards."

Safe and efficient coal extraction requires advanced radar subsystems that can be mounted on cutting drums of coal cutting machines. A look-ahead radar (LAR) must solve the radio geophysics problem of transmitting an electromagnetic (EM) wave through at least 20 feet (6.1 meters) of coal to an air- or water-filled void. The reflected EM wave must be processed in the radar electronics to determine the physical distance to the void. Horizon sensing enables selective cutting near the undulating sedimentary rock boundaries of the coal bed to address coal quality and ground control issues. Both sensors require subsystems for dynamic electric power generation, real-time measurement of drum rotation angle, detection of reflected EM waves, and processing to determine distance through coal and RF modem transmission of measured data to the mining machine. This paper describes the development of the subsystems and field test results.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

A study was made on six collapses that occurred during large-diameter tunnelling through weak sedimentary rocks and soil using SES methods in three stages?top heading, bench and invert. The collapsed lengths are between 20 m and 277 m. The collapses were re-mined using essentially the same tunnel-ling method with larger excavation profiles to accommodate the designed remedial measures consisting of ground treatment, pre-support and stronger initial support/outer lining required to carry higher ground loads acting in the collapsed lengths. The paper presents information on the collapses and the design and execution of the remedial measures.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

SEVERAL years ago, I estimated the total stock of gold in the world to be about a thousand million ounces, of which rather over one-third was available for monetary uses. Robert H. Ridgway has estimated the world's production from 1493 to 1927 as slightly over this amount. Of this total, 1.5 per cent was produced between 1493 and 1850 (before the Californian and Australian goldfields began to flood the world with gold), 331/2 per cent from 1851 to 1900, and 511/2 per cent from 1900 to 1927. Allowing for loss by attrition and permanent consumption in the arts, and for loss of buried treas¬ure, my first-mentioned estimate is perhaps not far from the truth; but my estimate of the monetary stock was certainly too low. Of the total production stated by Rid-way. 28 per cent came from North America. 26.9 per cent from Africa, 1.6.8 per cent from Australasia, 12.4 per cent from South America, and 11.2 per cent from Asia. Excepting that from the African conglomerate beds, the ultimate origin of which is still the subject of controversy, by far the greater part of the total production was derived from alluvials. Weighing all contingencies, it is improbable that any such production as has been made during the last forty years will be repeated in any similar period, if the present price level is maintained. The gold standard today seems firmly established except for temporary digressions. Nevertheless, no well-informed mining engineer will venture to assert the probability that the material for its maintenance throughout future generations can be furnished.

In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab, Coleraine, Minnesota, to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002 after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydro-separators and fine screens. A project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Minorca plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Concentrator Modeling Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.

Kaolin, or china clay, is the term applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates. Because of its purity, light color, and refractory properties, kaolin is used extensively in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic wares and as a filler by the rubber and paper industries. Although there are numerous pottery and enamelware plants in Texas, and large rubber and paper industries; all of the kaolin used in these plants is from other States, There are two known occurrences of kaolin in Texas, namely, the Leakey deposit in Real County and the several deposits of the Medley district in southern Jeff Davis County. An investigation of the Mueller kaolin deposit in the Medley district was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Following an examination of this deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by diamond core drilling.

On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

In September 2003, a test was conducted to see if a115-mm- (4.5-in.-) diam Mocap Vari-Stem blasthole plug could improve the pattern of explosives using different top stemming material. The test took place at the J.S. Faulkroad and Sonsstone quarry in McCalisterville, PA. The test consisted of a production stone blast. Half of the holes were stemmed with standard crushed stone. Two-thirds of the remaining half were stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and crushed stone. And the remaining one-third of the second 50 percent was stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and only drill cuttings.
