1962 was the second year of recovery from the mild 1960-61 recession. The year-to-year gain in constant dollar gross national product, our most comprehensive measure of the country's economic performance, was 6.0 percent (from $447.7 billion in 1961 to $474.8 billion in 1962). The unemployment rate declined from 6.7 percent to 5.6 percent. Although it was a good year, there were still unused resources of labor and capital which implied that the economy was operating below its potential. The year-to-year change in the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production of 7.6 percent masked the fact that more than one-third of the growth took place within 196L The monthly index rose only 4.8 percent during 1962, from 114.3 in January to 117.8 in September. The fact that the economy as shown by the industrial index, rose rapidly in the first half of the year only to remain on a plateau of 119-120 during the second half, led some people to fear an imminent downward turn. This did not occur. Neither production nor consumption of mineral fuels advanced as fast as the total economy. But consumption showed more gain than production, 5 percent compared with somewhat less than 4 percent. Production of both crude oil and natural gas reached new highs while bituminous coal production was the highest in 5 years.

It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations. Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. There are presently several issues that the mining industry is facing, such as underground air quality, deep mining and green house gas emissions, which could be addressed by the application of alternate energies. Several aspects must be considered by the industry in any drive to introduce new technologies within the context of a producing underground mine. This article presents several operational and support aspects that will evaluate the relevance of alternate energies, with emphasis on hydrogen power systems: operational drivers, commercial supply of technology, site supply system requirements, health and safety, capital and operating costs, mine production, corporate philosophy, and role of government. It is concluded that introduction of alternate energy technology requires a step-wise progression: Applicability to the industry, proof of concept testing, development of generic infrastructure, power systems and regulations, whole system studies and detailed studies of cost and risk versus benefits. The current initiative to apply fuel cells is at the proof of concept stage, entering the generic infrastructure stage.

Estimation techniques such as polygonal, triangular prism, trapezoid, isopach maps, and inverse distance methods are often used in ore or industrial minerals deposit evaluation. These techniques do not express the variability of the deposit and do not allow a determination of the reliability of the estimates. However, geostatistical methods can express a measure of the error associated with the estimates, by finding weighting coefficients for a given mining block, and can also help with data configuration that minimizes the error. This work addresses an application study on the quality and reserve characteristics of the cement raw materials of the Adana Cement Factory in Adana, Turkey, based on the spatial distribution and variability of the chemical components (Si02, CaO, A1203, Fe203). The study has been carried out using a geostatistical procedure that is useful for site assessment, characterization, and monitoring situations where data are collected spatially. Directional and omnidirectional experimental variograms of the cement raw material variables showed that neither strong geometric nor severe zonal anisotropy exists in the data. The most evident spatial dependence structure expressing the continuity for omnidirectional experimental variograms were characterized by exponential and spherical variogram models. These models have been used in cross¬-validation analysis, which proved that these models, their parameters, and kriging parameters are applicable for the study area. Quality contour maps of the deposits at given levels underground were estimated using a kriging interpolation technique. Anomalies such as bullseyes and drift were not observed in the maps that were generated. Kriged maps showed the spatial distribution of quality continuity and variability of the deposits. Grade-tonnage curves and total tonnage estimates in the particular grade were determined using ordinary kriging in order to improve the mining operation and planning. Consequently, local uncertainty and the probability of extreme values occurring are tools of prime importance for the mine planning, the optimum mix of raw materials coming from different quarry stopes.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

We consider the Grubbs estimation of the precision of an online gauge. Typically, this type of estimation involves independent results from two or more reference instruments (sampling and laboratory analysis operations). The properties of the estimator are then independent of the product variability. However, the use of more than one reference instrument entails significant additional costs. The two-instrument Grubbs estimator, which is based on results from a gauge and a single reference instrument, has the disadvantage that its standard error is heavily dependent on the degree of product variability. We propose a new estimator that has a variance that is more or less independent of product variability. In fact, the variance is typically less than that of the Grubbs estimator based on the use of two reference instruments. In order to function successfully, our methodology requires some prior knowledge of the extent of product variability and of gauge precision. In practice, such prior knowledge is often available and it is a weakness of the traditional two - and three-instrument Grubbs methods that no use is made of such knowledge. The efficacy and robustness of the new method is illustrated by Monte Carlo simulation.

Demand for construction raw materials depends on investment in housing, other buildings and infrastructure. The provision of these materials requires early knowledge of future trends in construction investment. By using scenarios possible future developments and bandwidths can be explored. Policy makers in government organisations as well as in the private sector can base their policy decisions upon these insights. In this paper we discuss the case of sand and gravel in the Netherlands. We will show that, depending on the future role of government and the degree of internationalisation, the long term demand for construction raw materials will strongly diverge. Nevertheless there are some common developments such as a decreasing population growth, a smaller share of the labour force in total population and a growing wealth. In different scenarios we will encounter different conditions for minerals provision and for sustainable development.

Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

THIS note reports on a continuation of a program on the thermodynamics of Fe-S-X systems in the "steel-burning" temperature range begun by Bock, Barloga, and parlee.' Small coils of 0.039-in.-diameter pure iron (Ferrovac-E) wire were equilibrated with Fe-S-0 melts in ingot iron crucibles under argon at 1324°C in the assembly shown in Fig. 1, the lower part of which was heated in a large Globar furnace. Fig. 1 shows (R) the coiled iron wire sample, (M) the Fe-S-0 melt prepared from desired proportions of ferrous sulfide and ferric oxide, (K) the iron crucible, (I) a mullite guide tube, (J) an alumina crucible, (L) alundum sand, (N) crushed mullite, (Q) hollow cylinders of K30 brick, (C) a steel rod, (B), (El, (F), (G), (P), and (O), details of brass water-cooled head, and (H) a mullite tube 2-3/4 in. ID and 26 in. long. The rod (C) bearing the sample could be removed at will and be replaced by a tube for sampling the melt, or by a thermocouple for comparing the melt temperature with a control thermocouple not far from the 2-3/4-in. mullite tube. After equilibration the iron coils were treated with acid to remove the outer layer of metal and then they were analyzed for sulfur by a standard combustion method. The melt samples were analyzed for oxygen by a variation of Lander's2 hydrogen-reduction method for mattes, and for sulfur by the ASTM combustion-iodometric method NO. E 30-47. When the results of some forty-two runs were examined it was found that the sulfur and oxygen contents of the equilibrated melts showed good consistency, in that the plotted compositions fell along the smooth curve shown in Fig. 2. The points on this curve represent the experimental compositions of melts in equilibrium with ?-iron (Fe-S-0) solid solutions. These solid solutions are saturated with sulfur and oxygen with respect to the melt and therefore have the same sulfur and oxygen activities as the melt. The curve drawn through the points therefore delineates the ? liquidus. It falls in such a position as to roughly confirm the liquidus curves of Hilty and crafts3 at 1200" and 1300°C which are

The limitation of fossil fuel resources and the necessity of reducing CO2emission require an increase of the efficiency of power plants by using combined cycle power systems. Pressurized Pulverized Coal Combustion (PPCC) is a potential concept to realise these objectives. The direct use of hot flue gas for driving a gas turbine requires a hot gas cleanup to achieve corrosion prevention of the turbine blading. One of the main problems is the alkali release during the coal combustion process. Molten coal ash slag has a high potential for alkali retention which depend son the alkali oxide activity in the slag. Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) was used to determine thermodynamic data of alkali gas species over molten coal ash slags and of alkali oxides in molten coal ash slags. The main interest of the investigations focused on the structural dependence of the thermodynamic properties of the alkalis. It was found that there is a strong correlation between the thermodynamic properties and the ratio of nonbridging oxygen to tetrahedral oxygen (NBO/T). An increase of the polymerization of the slag results in a decrease of the alkali oxide activity in the slag and thus a decrease of the alkali partial pressure over the slag. "The investigation is dedicated to study of biohydrometallurgical processing of refractory gold-arsenic concentrate with the large content of pyrrhotite. Sulfide concentrate of chemical constituents: 75g/t Au, 4,7g/t Ag, 6,3% As, 29,3% S, 2,3% Sb, 0,5% ? (organic) and of mineral composition, %: 11,8 arsenopyrite, 39 pyrrhotite, 12 pyrite, 2,9 antimonite and the rest – aluminosilicates, carbonates and quartz, was studied. The recovery of gold from concentrate by cyanidation is 51,2%. The rest of gold is embedded as finegraded segregation in sulfides.Sulfide oxidation process study is described. Bacterial oxidation was executed on a pilot laboratory unit using combined autotrophic bacterium: A. thiooxidans , A. ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidation, pH=1,5-2,2, t=28-32?C, oxidation time 120 hours. Pyrrhotite is the least stable sulfide mineral with electrode potential 0,45V versus arsenopyrite (0,55 V) and pyrite (0,55-0,6 V) and is oxidated primarily. Pyrrhotite oxidation is followed by large amount of elemental sulphur, which has a bad influence on cyanidation.It’s established that the rate of arsenopyrite (for the first 48 hours) from concentrate containing 39% pyrrhotite is 2-3 times as less as the rate of arsenopyrite bio-oxidation from concentrate without pyrrhotite. The arsenopyrite bio-oxidation is accelerated only after the elemental sulfur was oxidized by bacterium A. thiooxidans and elemental sulfur percentage was reduced from 6,8 to 3,9%. The bacterium concentration is increased from 2,5x107 to 2,5x109 cells/ml. Almost full oxidation of arsenopyrite (98%) and pyrrhotite (98- 99%) is finished in 120 hours. We have studied two pretreatment methods for elimination sulfur content influence on cyanidation: aeration in lime and electrochemical treatment. Such an operation enables to have supplemental oxidation of elemental sulfur and other oxygen and cyanide absorbants before cyanidation. After treatment the content of elemental sulfur was decreased from 3,9 to 2,2%, gold recovery from 90 to 96% and cyanide consumption from 16,2 to 7,2 kg/t decreases. The content of toxical rhodonite-ions in liquid phase of pulp and disinfection reagents consumption were decreased as result of elemental sulfur content in bio-oxidated product reduction."
