Nos últimos anos a thyssenkrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico – CSA tem passado por uma série de mudanças no que diz respeito ao perfil de qualidade das matérias-primas, principalmente em relação à piora de qualidade do minério de ferro extraído do quadrilátero ferrífero em Minas Gerais, o qual compõe 100% da carga metálica utilizada pela CSA. Uma das principais mudanças observadas foi o aumento do teor de fósforo na carga metálica (sinter produto, pelota e granulado), tornando-se necessários estudos para minimizar os impactos na elevação de P no gusa, tais como, desenvolvimento de novos fundentes e aditivos. O fósforo é um elemento que traz poucas alterações nos processos de Metalurgia da Redução (Sinterização, Coqueria e Alto forno) e existem métodos eficazes de redução destas alterações [1], porém é extremamente prejudicial à qualidade, produtividade e custos de uma Aciaria, principalmente em produções de aços que exigem baixo teor de fósforo em sua composição [2]. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os esforços realizados pela Sinterização em relação à redução do teor de fósforo no Sinter Produto e consequentemente no Gusa, por meio de simulações de qualidade envolvendo novos fundentes e aditivos.

The Corridor Sands deposits of heavy mineral sands represent the largest known economic resource of titanium dioxide minerals. The West Block of Deposit 1 alone contains Measured and Indicated Mineral Resources of 1.7 billion tonnes containing 4.14 per cent ilmenite, estimated in accordance with the JORC standard, sufficient for at least the first 20 years of mining. Total mineral resources are estimated to be approximately 17 billion tonnes at 5 per cent Total Heavy Minerals (THM). Test work was undertaken on the West Block of Deposit 1 over a period of two years in order to develop the process flow sheet to bankable standards. Geological, mineralogical and metallurgical test work was integrated from a pre-feasibility stage to the full bankable stage. The process flowsheet was developed with the central objective of the production of saleable products, of consistent quality and acceptable to the respective end-markets. The aim of this paper is to describe the way in which the various challenges for the project have been addressed by using integrated geological and mineralogical information, which has resulted in the development of a complete flow sheet. The process confirmed that material within customer specifications could be produced, once various metallurgical parameters were understood. This flow sheet development progressed from laboratory test work through to full field trials at pilot plant scale on large consignments of mineralized material. The flow sheet was developed to such a standard as to be used with confidence for both engineering design and cost estimates, and to determine the recovery factors to be used in financial evaluations. The Jabali zinc deposit, in Yemen, contains at least 9.4 Mt at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77g/t silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to conventional smelter/refineries, and it has been necessary to formulate a less conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material, at Yanbu, in Saudi Arabia. In order to give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulphide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, the flowsheet for Yanbu and presents preliminary costs for both operations

The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Hemlo area is located in Northern Ontario, some 350 km east of Thunder Bay along highway 17. Hemlo is Canada's largest, recent discovery of gold ore. Three companies, Lac, Noranda, and Teck are currently developing mines and processing facilities in the area. A combined milling capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per day will ultimately be available in the area. The gold yield will be between 750,000 to 1,000,000 ozs. per year. This will slightly more than double Ontario's gold production but only represents 2.5% of the total world gold production.Lac Minerals Ltd. is substantially committed to the gold mining business. Lac currently operates four (4) gold mines and mills and produces 300,000 ozs. per year. Lac's Hemlo development will put the company in the position of number one gold producer in Canada.The Lac Hemlo ore body has an estimated reserve of 37 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t. The mining will take place at an initial rate of 3,000 t/d commencing in the first quarter of 1986. The mine and plant will be expanded to 6,000 t/d in 1988. At this capacity, Lac will be the largest producer in the Hemlo area.1. GEOLOGYThe orebody is divided into two (2) zones for mining purposes. The 'A' Zone is to the east and dips to the Northeast from surface to 300 m below surface. This zone has a strike length of 250 m to 300 m at an average width of 20 m. The upperpart of the zone will be mined by open pit and the remainder from underground. The 'B' Zone, to the north west of the 'A' Zone, although lined up is not necessarily an extension of 'A' Zone. 'B' Zone has a known strike length of 600 m and is open to depth and along the strike. It is over 70 m wide in the core. This zone holds most of the property's known reserves. 'C' Zone with narrow gold zones is under exploration in the south west portion of the property."

Feldspar is no example of special mineralization in isolated spots: it can usually be found within a mile or so of almost anywhere. Along with silica sand, it is a major part of our world's total mineral composition. This fact imparts to it an economic status different from a sulfide ore, or potash, or phosphate. While every feldspathic "stringer" does not possess economic potential, the generous distribution does yield a high statistical frequency of good feldspar ore bodies: the adjective "good" being subject to some flexibility of interpretation. The strong chemical bonds of this alkali aluminum silicate give it certain use advantages, but under present technology its individual elements cannot practically be separated to create aluminum, potassium, sodium, silicon - or their oxides. Its present uses rely upon chemical inertness - as in fillers; and on its physical melting characteristics and their effect in glass, enamel, or ceramics.

"AbstractIn driven piles, the gradual dissipation of excess pore water pressure and consequently the soil setup significantly contribute to increasing the pile capacity with time. The question is risen that how the scale differences affect the stress state variations around the pile shaft and at the pile tip? Would the CPT predictions better correlate with End-Of-Drive (EOD) or Beginning of Restrike (BOR) conditions? On the other hand, are the proposed a and ß parameters for clayey soils mostly predicting the EOD or BOR situation? The main objective of this paper is to back calculate the a and ß parameters from CPT profiles, pile Dynamic Load Tests (DLT) at the EOD and BOR as well as Static Load Tests (SLT) and evaluate how they compare with those suggested in literature. Four precast 400 mm square concrete piles driven in North Azadegan Oilfield in Khuzestan Province were selected for the comparisons. CPT test results were available from the extensive geotechnical investigation at the study site. DLT tests using PDA were carried out at EOD, 1 day and 14-day BOR on all the 4 piles. All the piles were SLT tested as well. The UniCone software was used to estimate the tip and shaft resistances using 4 methods including the Dutch, Eslami & Fellenius, LCPC and Schmertmann. The results indicate that the a-method based on the proposed values in literature has predicted a shaft capacity of 90% of the 14-day BOR. This is while the ß-method has predicted a shaft capacity equivalent to 1-day BOR results only. Therefore, both methods have under-predicted the shaft capacities compared to real capacities measured after the significant soil setup in the study area. Two of the CPT methods have underestimated, one has overestimated and one has matched the estimated 60-day capacity."

"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. A cotação do minério de ferro caiu muito nos últimos anos. Em função disto, a Vale buscou se adaptar para continuar atendendo às condições do mercado. Considerando que o principal cliente mundial atualmente é a China, que os principais concorrentes estão na Austrália, e que as suas operações deste produto estão localizadas no Brasil, os desafios da Vale têm sido cada vez maiores para se produzir com qualidade e com baixo custo. Com este cenário, o desdobramento da estratégia da empresa, bem como sua execução, têm merecido destaque especial na Diretoria de Ferrosos Sudeste. Em meio a este momento, foi implantado o Escritório de Projetos, que recebeu a responsabilidade pela condução do planejamento estratégico, desdobramento da estratégia e gestão de carteira de projetos nessa Diretoria, de forma integrada com outros pilares da Gestão da Qualidade.

This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, examined an underground pillar at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD. Investigations involved strain relief and seismic tomography studies in the mine, and ultrasonic velocity measurements on pillar core in the laboratory. Measured octahedral normal stress was 37 MPa (5,366 psi); seismic P-wave velocities averaged 5.2 km/s (17,060 ft/s); and ultrasonic velocities at a pressure of 39.6 MPa (5,750 psi) averaged 6.3 km/s (20,669 ft/s). The difference between in-mine and laboratory velocities is attributed to the attenuation of seismic energy by mine fractures larger and more numerous than those in the samples of core measured in the laboratory. Using these results, researchers hypothesize that pillar rocks have the ability to withstand stress an order of magnitude greater than they currently sustain.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. O cobre é encontrado na natureza na forma de óxidos ou sulfetos e sua obtenção na forma metálica é usualmente alcançada através da pirometalurgia e eletrólise. Em ambos os processos há, além do gasto com energia, a geração de grande quantidade de passivos ambientais. Neste contexto a redução via plasma de hidrogênio se apresenta como uma alternativa promissora, pois valores significativos de carga metálica podem ser obtidos em temperaturas inferiores aos processos usuais e tendo como resíduo apenas vapor de água. Neste trabalho procurou-se investigar a influência do fluxo de hidrogênio na eficiência da redução do Cu2O por plasma de hidrogênio em baixa temperatura. Os experimentos foram realizados em reator de plasma pulsado CC nas vazões de 100, 200, 300 e 400 cm3/min, com temperatura constante de 300°C por 1h e pressão de 4Torr. A eficiência da redução foi determinada através de um balanço de massa e as análises dos produtos da redução foram feitas por difração de raios-x (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados parciais ratificam a redução a plasma como nova rota para a produção de cobre metálico e demonstram que as variações do fluxo de hidrogênio têm pouca influência na eficiência da redução.

A fratura por fadiga é a forma mais comum de falha estrutural e, atualmente, é um problema desafiador no projeto de componentes mecânicos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi modelar matematicamente as curvas de crescimento de trinca por fadiga em função do fator de intensidade de tensão de uma junta de aço 1016 obtida pelo processo de soldagem GMAW. Os resultados obtidos no estágio II da curva de propagação de trinca por fadiga mostraram que o material respeita a equação de Paris para solicitação no sentido longitudinal. No entanto, verificou-se uma correlação linear entre os parâmetros. Esta correlação deixa de existir quando se trabalha com o modelo de Bergner. Não houve variação no crescimento de trinca por fadiga na direção TL, analisado segundo o modelo de Bergner e na região fundida.

O sucesso da utilização do método de reparo/prevenção de refratários de convertedores LD chamado Slag Splashing tem relação com as propriedades físico-químicas da escória, em especial a sua viscosidade. Através de uma simulação termodinâmica feita no software FactSage que tomou como base a equação de Einstein-Roscoe utilizando uma escória de composição representativa de uma escória industrial, junto de uma simulação a frio utilizando soluções representando escórias com variadas frações sólidas, foi possível correlacionar a viscosidade do modelo a frio, avaliando a possibilidade de transposição de resultados desse modelo para a prática industrial em escórias com frações sólidas de até 20%, sendo que acima desse valor um modelo mais assertivo deve ser restabelecido. Por simulação física a frio em um modelo de conversor de escala de 1/10 em relação aos conversores de 340 toneladas da Ternium Brasil, utilizando soluções representativas de escórias industriais com frações sólidas de 10 a 40%, avaliou-se a influência da viscosidade na intensidade na projeção de escória durante o processo do Slag Splashing, deixando claro o efeito da fluidez ou da alta viscosidade na altura, localização e qualidade das projeções.

The evaluation and development of the Eastern North Carolina phosphate deposit resulted in one of the world&apos;s largest and most modern phosphate mines and fertilizer complexes at an investment in excess of $90,000,000. The resulting ore beneficiation process showed excellent correlation with pilot plant data. A number of variations from current industrial practices were introduced and projected from bench scale tests through pilot plant to production. Principal among these variations were the following: 1) removal of magnesium by classification, 2) simultaneous flotation of coarse and fine phosphate, 3) the use of saponified fatty acid, 4) utilization of filter wash water for deoiling, 5) utilization of a rougher concentrate for acidulation, 6) calcination of flotation concentrates, and 7) elimination of grinding prior to the manufacture of phosphoric acid.

Hydrochem Developments Ltd. has developed and put into full scale operation a novel type of vertical flotation column incorporating a multiplicity of mechanically agitated stages. Characteristics of this flotation column include a low height to diameter ratio, high upgrading factors and the possibility of modifying geometry and operation to specific flotation requirements. A commercial unit is currently handling up to 100 tpd rougher concentrate at Dickenson Mines Limited, Balmertown, Ontario. Design parameters and plant performance will be discussed.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews the first 2 years of the agency&apos;s progress in implementing total quality management (TQM), which the agency refers to as Quality Improvement (QI). All employees have been trained in basic TQM concepts, a cadre of facilitators has been selected and trained, and 13 Bureauwide teams are addressing specific issues that were identified by Bureau employees nationwide as problem areas. Also in place are a Quality Council composed of the Bureau&apos;s top executives, a Quality Management Board, and eight QI Working Groups to provide a national 01 infrastructure. There are also Quality Steering Groups at each Bureau location nationwide to address local concerns. In addition to the narrative text, the texts of salient memoranda and other documents are included as appendixes.
