Displacement of soil and groundwater during helical pile installation can produce excess pore water pressures (PWP) in fine-grained soils. Pore water pressure reduces effective stress in the soil immediately adjacent to the helical pile shaft and near the helical piles. Previous studies have shown generation of PWP may affect the capacity to torque ratios of the helical bearing elements. Large diameter helical piles that generate much of their torque and capacity from shaft adhesion are affected by PWP and therefore exhibit significant pile "freeze" after installation. Computer modeling is used herein to evaluate PWP immediately adjacent to helical pile shafts during installation in various soil types. The models show the degree and distance from the shaft that is influenced by PWP during installation and the amount of time required for the PWP to dissipate. Pile freeze has been measured on several project sites by re‐torque measurements. These re-torque data are compared with computer modeling and correlations between saturated hydraulic conductivity and dissipation time are presented and discussed. INTRODUCTION Helical piles are full-displacement piles, meaning installation does not produce drill spoil. Soil is displaced laterally as the pile progresses into the ground. This displacement of soil causes an increase in PWP, which reduces adhesion between the pile and the soil. For helical piles with small-diameter shafts, adhesion contributes little to the overall capacity and torque of the pile, so PWP changes are not typically considered in determining pile capacity. In modern construction, the use of larger diameter helical piles has become very common. For large-diameter helical piles, changes in PWP immediately adjacent the shaft can be quite large during installation. Increased pore water pressure and reduced adhesion can have a temporary effect on pile capacity and installation torque.

Rock density determinations are necessary for ore resource evaluations from estimated block grades in g/t. Rock density depends on the mineral composition and, thus, it is specific for each rock type. The rock density distributions for different rock types are often symmetric. Hence, the arithmetic mean is a good approximation for the average density for lithological units. However, there may exist spatial variation in density values due to alteration, fracturing and original heterogeneities such as layering. This study compares the kriged density model with the one with constant density values for different lithological units in the evaluation of metal amounts in rock blocks. The case study consisted of rock densities measured from the drill cores at Ahmavaara PGE deposit in northern Finland. The used Ni contents were simulated in accordance with the spatial distribution of rock densities. The Ni amounts in 2x2x2 m3blocks are higher for the kriged densities than for the average densities. The difference is increasing with the increasing metal amounts due to the nonlinear correlation between Ni content and rock density. The final effect on the resource estimation depends on the cutt off grade and prices of the metal, for example, for a very valuable metal the small differences are significant

MEANING OF TERM, The term "minerals" when used in grants or in reservations or instruments of conveyance is not limited to metals or metalliferous deposits, whether contained in veins that have well-defined walls or in beds or deposits that are irregular and are found at or near the surface or otherwise. In response to the appearance of excessive convergence of bolted gateroads in the front abutment zone of retreating coal faces at Phalen Colliery, staff from the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory in Sydney, N.S. initiated a programme of roof profile measurements in the front abutment zone of longwall headgates. The results of these measurements allowed a characteristic deformation curve to be determined for each headgate, and the early identification of areas showing an unstable deformation trend. These areas were then reinforced with supplementary support. The monitoring programme was adopted and enlarged by the rock mechanics staff of the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and has been continuing for a period of approximately two years. A sufficient quantity of data now exists to be able to make an assessment of the effects of a number of mining parameters on the performance of the gateroad in the front abutment zone. The following paper describes the method of measurement, illustrated by typical results, and goes on to relate variations in rate and patterns of movement to geology, interaction, method of support and pre-mining stresses.

A survey of 80 coal producers was conducted to determine the extent and scope of respirable dust control research for underground coal mines and the current methods employed to control respirable dust. Results of the survey showed that proper face ventilation and an adequate water spray system are sufficient to comply with mandatory standards in room and pillar mining. Difficulties still exist with longwall equipment, auger miners and buring machines. In these cases, known dust control techniques are not sufficient to obtain compliance. Present state-of-the-art face ventilation and water systems were discussed in addition to the sampling program.

Continuing progress in a petroleum and natural gas research program of world-wide significance makes it difficult to pinpoint accomplishments within definite time limits, and it is helpful to look back as well as forward in attempting to introduce and summarize the petroleum work of the Bureau of Mines in the fiscal year 1953. The 1952 report2 / indicated progress in a long-range program applicable in large part to both defense and peacetime requirements. The present report indicates a continuation of that program, modified partly by new demands and interests of government and industry, and is highlighted by a number of significant contributions to the knowledge of petroleum and natural gas and their production and utilization. The intent of the program was clearly epitomized in a statement made near the end of the fiscal year at a general conference of Bureau of Mines personnel where the record was critically reviewed:

Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

Using chip sample data and spatial structure parameters from a large mined-out section of a South African gold mine the advantages to be gained from a regular underground borehole drilling programme have been investigated for short- and medium- to long-term planning based on block valuations. The results have been compared with the current position, which relies invariably on the extrapolation of limited peripheral sampling data from raises, gullies or stope faces. Some preliminary work has also been done regarding the implications of such underground drilling on costs used for the present pay limit calculations. The results of the study, though preliminary, show that the net advantage of advance regular underground drilling could be substantial and that a more intensive follow-up research is warranted.

No commodity agreements now exist for sulfur and a lack of reference to sulfur commodity agreements exists in the literature. Law (1975) made a passing reference to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement and the following discussion centers on the world sulfur market of the early 1980's in this context. GENERAL THEORY OF COMMODITY AGREEMENTS The upsurge in demands for commodity agreements seen in the last decade or so stems largely from agitation by the less developed countries (LDC) for better economic treatment by more developed countries (MDC). Several economic factors, real or imagined, adversely affect the LDC's as follows (MacAvoy, 1977): 1) variable demand in MDC's causes wide fluctuations in commodity prices which hurt the economies of commodity producers, who are often LDC's although consumer economies may also benefit from more predictable prices; 2) a general decline of commodity prices relative to the price of manufactured goods which hurts commodity producers in their balance of trade while their stocks and overcapacity rise; 3) instability of LDC economies enhanced by the above factors lowers internal stability, inhibits foreign investment, and retards economic growth; and 4) a lack of self respect when dealing with developed countries o, following the OPEC lead, LDC producers want the stature related to cartel market power.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1982, 13 companies operated 30 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 55% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 34% of the production; Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas 18%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central and eastern States 34%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1982 was valued at over $5.5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 39% of domestic consumption in 1982, transportation 20%, building 14%, electrical 8%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 11%.

This final report documents the cooperative efforts of the Engineered Systems Division and the Mining Equipment Division of FMC Corporation during performance of Bureau of Mines Contract H0252091. Improved operator compartments incorporating overhead canopies, logical arrangements of controls, and design features offering greater operator comfort were developed and retrofitted to the FMC 320A roof bolter and 6L shuttle care The vehicles were evaluated in underground operations at separate mine sites. The successful evaluation has resulted in incorporation of the designs as standard features of the 320A roof bolter, and the 5L, 6L, and 10L shuttle cars.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

Traditionally, South African shaft sinking operations have used electric detonators for the initiation of blastholes. Globally, the trend in shaft sinking is to use the shock tube and detonating cord (STDC) initiation system, with value adding benefits. In pursuing this global trend, Cementation Mining of South Africa in partnership with SMX have ventured the STDC route. This paper explores the work carried out to date, and identifies a number of benefits to be gained by using the system.

As ligas com memória de forma (LMF) apresentam características funcionais de recuperação de deformações plásticas aparentes e mudança de suas propriedades mecânicas quando submetidas a variações de temperatura, proporcionando um crescente interesse para aplicações de engenharia e originando uma nova maneira de projetar sistemas mecânicos. Nesse contexto, é importante desenvolver novos métodos de fabricação de componentes e dispositivos a partir de LMF. Infelizmente essa fabricação pode ser ainda extremamente complexa e dispendiosa, principalmente para LMF do sistema Níquel-Titânio (Ni-Ti). No final do século XX, a fundição de precisão se tornou uma alternativa eficaz para a conformação de componentes de titânio e suas ligas em aplicações de alta tecnologia. Entretanto, não existem informações da utilização desse processo para fabricação de componentes mecânicos de LMF. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o processo de fundição de precisão para o desenvolvimento de novos, produtos principalmente miniatuadores ativos de LMF Ni-Ti. Para isso, foi realizada a fabricação de diferentes formatos de miniatuadores de LMF Ni-Ti (de composição nominal em peso de 54,9Ni-45,1Ti) pelo processo de fundição de precisão com molde sólido, e ainda sua caracterização térmica e por ensaios não destrutivos. Foram obtidos quatro miniatuadores distintos, nos formatos de minitubo duplo, arruela Belleville, mola e parafuso, com bom acabamento superficial. A presença da transformação de fase característica das LMF foi avaliada por técnicas de calorimetria diferencial exploratória (DSC) e resistência elétrica em função da temperatura (RET) nos quatros tipos de miniatuadores. As técnicas não destrutivas de raios X e tomografia computadorizada foram empregadas para avaliar a qualidade dos miniatuadores produzidos, sendo importantes na detecção da presença de defeitos de processo. Ficou evidente a eficiência do novo processo proposto, porém ainda se faz necessário mais investigações principalmente com relação ao comportamento termomecânico dos miniatuadores obtidos por esse processo.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. Size specific energy (SSE) benchmarking methodology was used to identify that a 10% increase in throughput could be achieved with improved primary classification.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Clarke, N, Elms, P, Anyimadu, A and Powell, M S, 2015. Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The minerals identified were the major ore minerals, magnetite and hematite; the rare-earth phosphates, monazite and xenotime; the rare-earth silicate, allanite; the minor associated minerals, cassiterite, pyrite, and apatite; and the gangue minerals, feldspar, quartz, and actinolite.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade da máquina de tração Instron em conjunto com um forno acoplado em sua estrutura (especialmente desenvolvido para este fim) para a obtenção das curvas tensão versus deformação do aço 22MnB5 nas temperaturas usualmente empregadas no processo de estampagem a quente. Adicionalmente, teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da temperatura nas propriedades mecânicas do aço para estampagem a quente. De posse dos dados experimentais de tensão e deformação foram realizadas tentativas de ajuste aos modelos constitutivos Voce–Kocks e Hollomon para as diferentes temperaturas. Os resultados demonstraram que o conjunto Instron-forno foi capaz de entregar resultados com repetibilidade, permitindo assim o ajuste dos dados ao modelo de Voce-Kocks na maior parte dos casos.

The increase in metals demand in the electrifying globe means significant growth in the smelting of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead, produced from primary sulfide sources or using sulfide mattes as the intermediates of the process chains. This means that leaner and complex mineral deposits will be evaluated as ores and are in the future traded in the commodity market for smelting and refining to pure metals. An important issue in the trend is the technology metals, like antimony, tellurium, and gallium, which exist as trace elements in sulfide ores and form no ores of their own. Their recovery becomes important in the coming decades as will be the case with growing slag amounts without use in other industries. The key is to produce environmentally acceptable slags in the smelting operations. It sets new boundary conditions to the treatment of flue dusts. This means that all material streams of smelting and refining must be re-evaluated for the deportments of the main and minority metals. In copper smelting, the recoveries of precious metals are today important for the feasibility of the custom smelters but due to low prices of many minority metals they are discarded in slag landfills. It is one of the emerging issues also in the secondary copper smelting today and once the demand grows, the same question will be faced also in the mining-beneficiation-smelting-refining chain of the primary production of nickel, zinc, and lead. The distributions of many technology metals in the copper and nickel smelting have been recently studied using methods where the chemically bound trace elements in the slag and its phases at the smelting conditions have been studied. Thus, the key data about options for process modifications and additional processing steps are piling up. Short processing routes in the metals smelting and refining are attractive due to their simplicity. At the same time, complexity of many raw materials challenges the fluxing at high oxygen partial pressures in low silica slags with high metal concentrations. The compromise between high primary recovery and safe operation is a demanding task in conditions where slag foaming outside the processing window is evident. The increase in the demand of pure nickel is challenging the raw material basis where low-grade sulfide ores are soon smelted along with nickel laterites to matte. It is a demanding task at high MgO concentrations. The low solubility of MgO in iron silicate slags requires new fluxing strategies and new smelting end points for the operation at reasonable temperatures; the direct nickel matte smelting in one-matte mode may be an option.
