Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in 1983 with the formation of DeBeers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geosurvey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. De Beers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geosurvey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in De Beers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities is also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydrotransport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

In a field test at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., a system developed by ICI Australia Ltd. for bulk loading "MOLANITE", an ammonium nitrate slurry blasting agent into ring drilled holes of wblcvel open stopes, was shown to be satisfactory. The fragmentation produced by the slurry was a significant improvement over ANFO and the stope production rate was increased by approximately 50%. Indications are that the charging rate and labour costs will not be greatly changed if a slurry system is used.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. After World War II the Bureau of Mines studied methods of producing synthesis gas including a plan to gasify coal in place. Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

Virtually from the date of its discovery in December 1928 the Oklahoma City oil and gas field, Oklahoma County, Okla., has attracted national and international attention. The history of the field has been associated closely with rules and regulations pertaining to production control and proration practices. Early development was rapid, and Oklahoma City soon attained the distinction of being the first major field in which the producing wells were over a mile in depth. Before the structural features of the reservoir had been disclosed every outpost well was considered a "wildcat", so complex appeared the underground geology, The wells not only were deep and the reservoir pressures high, but the production from the early wells was a high A.P.I. gravity oil, accompanied by large volumes of gas. Several "blow-outs" and fired occurred during the early development, and the close proximity of these now unusual events to a large city gave the field much publicity, both local and national. Later, when its production threatened to demoralize the market for oil and its products, the Oklahoma City field again attracted wide publicity. The then little understood geology of the underground reservoir and the diversity of ownership of the land overlying the producing structure made orderly development and production difficult to enforce. Proration was enforced with difficulty., and the, rate of production from the field continued to increase until, on August 4, 1931, martial law was declared in all prorated fields of the State, and most of the wells in the Oklahoma City field wore shut n. On October 9, 1931, permission was granted t o reopen and prod e the wells in the Oklahoma City field. The order permitting production of the wells provided that during the period beginning October 10 and extending to October 20, 1931, all wells in the field that hid not produced more oil than specified under the earlier proration orders and that had been shut in for the required 55-day period were permitted to produce 5 percent of their last potential during that 10-day period. On November 7, 1931, the Corporation Commission of Oklahoma issued an order which divided the Oklahoma City field into the Wilcox, Arbuckle, and Lower Simpson zones for proration purposes. Wells producing from the Wilcox zone were allowed to produce 4 1/2 percent of their potential5/ from November 1, 1931, to January 1, 1932; Arbuckle limestone wells were allowed to produce 250 barrels of oil daily; and Simpson sandstone wells which had a potential of over 2,000 barrels per day or which made 3 percent or more water were allowed to produce 200 barrels of oil per day.

In the solvent extraction process, also referred to as liquid-liquid extraction, the clarified uranium-pregnant sulfuric acid leach solution is contacted with an organic extractant dispersed in kerosene; the uranium enters the organic phase and associates itself with the organic extractants. Simultaneously an-ions or cations, as the case may be, leave the organic extractant phase and enter the aqueous phase. The two phases are then allowed to separate by virtue of their immiscibility. Based on the data available, a generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the sodium carbonate scrub liquor of acid leach uranium mills using secondary and tertiary amine extractants is presented, as is another generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the bleed stream of alkaline leach uranium mill circuits. Such economic appraisal as can be made at this stage of the development is also indicated. Molybdenum occurs in most uranium ores. Whether the uranium is solubilized by the acid leach route or by the alkaline leach process, some of the molybdenum present in the ore is solubilized along with the uranium. Molybdenum in uranium mill pregant solutions may cause processing difficulties, among which may be mentioned the poisoning of resins, the precipitation of organo-molybdenum complexes, or the build-up of molybdenum in recycle streams. While the uranium milling industry has been successful in applying measures to overcome the problems arising from the presence of molybdenum in the circuits, such measures nevertheless add to the cost of producing uranium yellow cake concentrate. Table I shows the analysis of typical uranium pregnant leach solutions. Uranium recovery by solvent extraction is presently practiced only in conjunction with acid leach circuits, and it may be noted that of about 16,000 tons of uranium ore daily processed by sulfuric acid leach, more than half of this tonnage follows the solvent extraction route. Uranium mills leaching ore with sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution (the so-called alkaline leach circuit) do not use solvent extraction. In this case the uranium pregnant solution is sufficiently pure to permit the direct precipitation of uranium concentrate with subsequent recycle of the alkaline leach solution. While solvent extraction procedures may be developed which are economically attractive for the alkaline leach uranium process, this has so far not been the case. The earlier uranium mill solvent extraction circuits used organo-phosphate extraction reagents, among which di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid was popular. It should be borne in mind that uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solution exists in an equilibrium involving uranium in both anion and cation forms: uo + 2S0 = [uo2(so4)2] For this reason uranium may be extracted by either cation extractors or anion extractors and this is likewise true of molybdenum. However, the organo-phosphate extractants also load ferric iron which is usually present in the uranium acid leach solution. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce this solution substantially to the ferrous state ahead of solvent extraction using organo-phosphate reagents. The amines, being anion extractors, selectively reject iron and thus render the iron reduction step unnecessary. This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.

Benson Mines low-grade iron ore reserve is a replacement deposit within the Grenville gneisses of the Adirondacks. The average grade of the crude ore is about 23 per cent iron. The iron minerals are principally magnetite and hematite disseminated throughout the gneisses as discrete grains about 1 mm in size. Both the ores that are beneficiated by magnetic means and the non-magnetic ores that are treated by a gravity method of concentration are found in stratigraphically different positions but are mined from one open pit, which is about 2.5 miles long and 800 feet wide and are treated separately. The gneisses are described and named according to the distinctive mineralogy of each. Recognition of the gneissic types permits the interpretation of the structure as a northward-plunging syncline overturned to the west. A large subsidiary anticline-syncline complex occurs on the east limb of the major syncline. Iron minerals in sufficient quantity to be considered ore are confined to areas where the footwall rock has been overturned to become the hanging wall.

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

An experimental 1.75 meter Shaft Boring Machine was designed and manufactured by The Robbins Company. The drill was used by contractor Drillcon Raise AB to drill test shafts at an SKB underground test facility. SKB is the Swedish authority responsible for safe management of nuclear waste materials. This “SBM1.8” Shaft Boring Machine was used to drill shallow test shafts ingranitic rock at SKB’s Aspo underground laboratory. The drill used a unique vacuum mucking system. The bored shafts were held to very strict tolerances for bore diameter, straightness, and verticality. This drill was launched and operated from a mobile launcher. Headroom and working space were limited. The SBM1.8 drill produced acceptable test holes. SKB will carry out several studies to determine the suitability of this geology, and of this technique, for safe nuclear disposal. In addition to future use at SKB, many applications are foreseen, particularly in the civil construction industry.

Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

Four significant soil nail wall projects in the eastern United States were recently completed with a combined area of 175,000 square feet of finished shotcrete surface. These projects required the use of innovative design and construction methods in order to address various challenges, including slide-prone back slope materials, perched water, highly erodible rock materials, curved wall alignments, very tight construction tolerances and unexpected subsurface conditions. Special focus is given to issues such as bench excavation, soil nail installation methods, shotcrete mix design, anticipated shotcrete quantities, shotcrete nozzlemen qualifications and weather conditions, in order to provide a lessons-learned database for future soil nail wall design and inspector considerations. These projects also underscore the importance of design engineer and soil nail wall contractor qualifications as well as effective communication with the owner.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

"Stillwater Mining commenced mining operations at Nye, Montana in 1987 for the recovery of platinum and palladium. Exploration identified that the J-M Reef extended for 43 km. In 1998 Stillwater Mining made the decision to develop the East Boulder mine complex, located approximately 13 miles from the Stillwater mine complex at Nye, to increase production. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of the East Boulder process plant.INTRODUCTIONStillwater Mining Company have been producing Platinum and Palladium from their Nye, Montana operations since 1987. The mine production from Nye had been increased in stages with mine production being delivered through several portals and one vertical shaft.The deposit is narrow veined which prevents the application of bulk mining methods and thus limits the production capabilities.In order to increase the production of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) Stillwater made the decision to access the ore from the J-M Reef from the East Boulder site. The East Boulder mine site is located about 21 km (13 miles) from Nye, however as shown in Figure 1, the travel distance is closer to 188 km (114 miles). Distance, on strike, and space availability at Nye precluded the expansion of the Nye concentrator to handle the increased mining rate and supported the decision to install a new concentrator at East Boulder."

In this paper, the nonlinear finite element analysis is used to study the support system of a tunnel which is designed to pass through deep-embeded stratum. The rock mass is rather intact, though a section of tunnel will pass through the weak belt. Under the influence of the high ground stress, the condition of stability and the form of support become complicate. This paper, talcing into account the nonlinear properties of rock mass and the Interaction between rock, and support, makes a comparison between the two kinds of soft and rigid support systems, and analysed the changes of their bearing forces.
