Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

ONE of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

Techniques used to safely control the roof in UK coal mines for some 10 years have been applied to a South African coal mine. This new approach known in the UK as advanced rockbolting technology, is based on applying four fundamental principles: ?Understanding the roof failure mechanisms ?Using an effective roof support system ?Designing this support using measurement ?Monitoring the performance of the system. The paper summarizes the approach in detail and describes how it is being applied by Anglo Coal, giving results obtained to date. Investigations at a number of South African coal mines, including stress measurements at two Anglo Coal mines, have confirmed that the mode of roof failure (lateral shearing due to horizontal stress) is the same as in other coalfields worldwide, and aspects of current world best practice, including the use of advanced technology rockbolting, are therefore relevant in South Africa. The stress measurements indicated a high level of stress field anisotropy and further investigation of stress conditions in South African coal mines is recommended. The most effective bolting system to resist shear failure is one with high bond strength and stiffness. Short encapsulation pull testing of existing South African systems confirmed that they have low bond strength and stiffness. An improved rockbolt system with the required performance, and features allowing rapid installation and installation quality and performance audit, has been developed and is currently under full-scale trial. Design by measurement and routine monitoring procedures including the use of a rotary telltale device are also under trial. It is anticipated that South African coal mines will be able to obtain significant safety and productivity benefits from the application of this technology.

South African platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam, are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the orebodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3dependingupon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40?42% Cr2O3. However, it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.

The overall objective of this study is to contribute to the reduction of the quartz dust hazard in underground coal mines through a better under-standing of the sources and generation of airborne quartz dust. This research project has included extensive experiments in operating mines for (1) documenting the amount of respirable dust generated, (2) measuring the quartz levels in host materials and airborne dust, (3) analyzing the size consist of the mined product, and (4) establishing the relationship between these various parameters. The results of the study indicate that the amount of dust airborne is a very small fraction of the total (<15 µm) and respirable (<7 µm) dust generated. The quartz contents in the total and respirable airborne dust are generally higher than those in the host material. Quartz content increases with decreasing size of airborne dust. Also, it appears that rock breaks into a different size distribution than coal. The source of quartz for the airborne dust appears to be the roof and the floor material rather than the coal seam itself. No general relationship is found between the Hardgrove Grindability Index and either the quartz content in the airborne dust or the amount of respirable dust. Extended descriptions of the experimental design, the experiments, data analyses and results are presented in this volume. The raw data, the data management computer program and the sampling and safety plan are presented in Volume 2.

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east bank of Lingding Ocean. Its coastline is about 6 km long and the water depth near the shore is Favourable. Across the bay is the &apos; New Territories " of Hong Kong. The port is at a distance of 22-23 seamilesaway from center of Hong Kong and 80 seamiles to Huangpu Harbour of Guangzhou, its highway links with Shen-Guang Highay. Since 19 79 China Merchants Group of the Transportation Department, began to set up Shekou Industrial Zone, the port has been developing and flouri­shing in business. With 15 large or small berths in all, the present portline is 2600 m, and the annual cargo throughout is over 3,000,000 tons and the annual passenger traffic is about 2,000,000 persons. Equalling a medium-scale seaport, it has been officially approved as an oceangoing transit port by the ministry of Transportation. The construction of Shekou port is chara-terized by the self-collected funds and the short construction period. In view of this, the optional plan of the port structure must serve the requirements of simplicity in struture, economy in mate­rial and speed in construction. That accounts for the most application of the sheet piling type to the port in Shekou. Once the project was approved, the cons­truction started. Only within an average period of 7-8 months, a deep water pier was completed and put into operation, which covered series of processes from exploration, designing, tender for con­struction to completion.

The contractor examined L.T. White&apos;s Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.

[SECRETARY&apos;S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The model can be extended by the inclusion of new variables that have a probabilistic nature

A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. In the present paper, the performance of four approaches based on neural networks and geostatistical method for grade estimation are compared and analyzed their performance to find a proper method. Four methods, Multi Layer Perceptron neural network (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) and Ordinary Kriging (OK) are selected for ore grade estimation of variable Fe in an iron deposit located in Iran. For each method, two diagnostic statistics are calculated: Mean square error (MSE) and correlation coefficient. The results show the superiority of the General Regression Neural Network.

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country&apos;s diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia&apos;s economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries. The tungsten resources of China and the U.S.S.R. were also estimated. This resulted from an evaluation of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of tungsten available as ammonium paratungstate (APT), artificial and natural scheelite, and ferrotungsten at various average total costs of production including 0- and 15-pct rates of return on invested capital. The evaluated deposits contain 1.2 million metric tons (t) of recoverable WO3, of which approximately 52,000 t of AEYT can be produced at the January 1983 market price of $5.37/lb, 89,000 t of natural and artificial scheelite at a market price of $3.63/lb, and 1,700 t of ferrotungsten at $5.61/lb of tungsten. An annual availability analysis indicates that by the early 1990&apos;s new deposit discoveries, development of known prospects, or expansions of producing mines will be necessary to meet projected tungsten demand.

ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d&apos;après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l&apos;aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

The Calypso geothermal field, mapped by the R V Sonne (cruise SO-135) in 1998, includes four main sites, the Northern Vent Area (centred on 37¦ 36.7&apos;S, 177¦ 06.2&apos;E, area 1.5 km2), Central Vent Area (37¦ 39.4&apos;S, 177¦ 05.2&apos;E, 1 km2), Southern Vent Area (37¦ 41.7&apos;S, 177¦ 06.0&apos;E, 1 km2) and Mercury Vent Area (37¦ 41.3&apos;S, 177¦ 07.3 &apos;E, 0.5 km2). Hydrothermal activity at the vent sites is controlled by minor, sub-parallel NE-trending normal faults. Gas bubble trails (C02) and shimmering hot water vent from fractures and joints between large blocks of silicified volcaniclastics and in depressions in the sediments at the base of these outcrops. Measured maximum vent temperatures are between 180¦C and 201¦C. Venting fluids are at, or just below, boiling for water depths of 200 m. Rock samples recovered by dredge from the sites include massive anhydrite, clay-altered pumiceous ash, silicified volcaniclastic sediments and volcaniclastic breccias cemented by sulphur. Clay-altered samples, dominated by randomly interstratified illite-smectite and accessory chlorite, indicate formation environments of 70¦C to 90 ¦C. Native sulphur is abundant throughout the samples. Fine-grained (&lt;1 mm) disseminated pyrite and vein pyrite occurs in the clay-altered pumiceous volcaniclastics and argillites. In the Southern and Mercury Vent Areas, fine-grained orpiment, realgar and cinnabar have deposited in the sandy matrix of volcaniclastic breccias. Amongst the cinnabar, small (&lt;2 mm) beads of native Hg formed on the surface of several rocks following their recovery. These samples also contained abundant light hydrocarbons, which coat the rocks with an oily sheen.

Roof falls are one of the leading ground control problems that adversely influence productivity and worker safety in underground mines, construction sites, and nuclear waste repositories. To control roof stability problems, the operator needs to have practical methods for measuring changes in strata conditions and criteria for defining the timing of secondary support installation. The objective of this study was to develop measurement techniques and criteria for assessing roof conditions at the mining face. An integrated rock deformation and tomographic imaging method was developed and applied at two sites in a western U.S. trona mine. It was shown that rock damage occurred at a deformation of 30 to 60 mm (1.2 to 2.4 in) (2 to 4 pct strain) and was associated with a significant (16 pct) reduction in wave velocity. Thus, supplementary support may be installed when there is a measured change in wave velocity of at least 16 pct. Tomographic measurements can be obtained in rocks rapidly, thus providing a powerful tool for analyzing growth of failure and for installing supplementary support systems in a timely manner.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

Knoop hardness measurements were carried out on large grains of iodide titanium containing different amounts of oxygen. For each oxygen content the hardness is recorded ainingas a function of the crystal orientation and of the angle 4 between the indenter diagonal and the projection of the C (hexad) axis in the surface. The results can be expressed by the following relation; hardness = n-k cos 2ø, where n and k are constants for a given oxygen content and crystal surface orientation. A NISOTROPY of hardness is a well-known phe-nomenon and has been reported for many metals.1-3 At the present time, however, such information is not available in the literature for titanium. Consequently, a systematic study of the simultaneous effects of oxygen content and crystallographic orientation on the hardness of titanium was undertaken in this laboratory. Evaluations of oxygen content in titanium are frequently carried out through hardness tests. Although such procedures may be justified in small grain specimens, the results of the present investigation indicate that the anisotropy of hardness should be taken into account in the case of coarsegrained specimens as well as in the case of pronounced preferred orientation. Materials and Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium, 99.99 pet pure and containing of the order of 0.002 wt pet O, was used throughout this investigation. The metal was arc melted in an argon atmosphere and cold rolled into strips 1/16 in. thick. These strips were subsequently recrystal-lized and strain annealed in vacuum (10" mm Hg or better) at 850°C in order to produce crystals varying in diameter from 10 to 25 mm. Oxygen was introduced into selected large crystals by heating at 700°C in an atmosphere of pure oxygen under an observed pressure of approximately 50 mm Hg. Each sample was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 100 hr, in order to homogenize the oxygen content throughout the specimen. It was found that longer annealing was not necessary, for no change of surface hardness in a given direction was detected after prolonged annealing. The oxygen content was determined by the difference in weight of the specimens before and after the oxidation-annealing cycle. The accuracy of oxygen determination is within ±0.1 mg in samples weighing 0.5 to 1 g. A vacuum fusion analysis of oxygen was performed on several samples and gave results in good agreement with the ones obtained by the weight change. It should be emphasized that expected weight losses through evaporation of the metal in vacuum at 850°C&apos; are many orders of magnitude lower than the precision of these measurements. Following the annealing treatment, both oxidized and unoxidized crystals were carefully polished. All detectable traces of surface cold working were removed by repeated polishing and etching. Laue back reflection X-ray patterns were taken for each crystal for the purpose of determining the orientation and ascertaining the absence of substructures detectable by this method. Hardness measurements, using a 1 kg load, were subsequently carried out on a Tukon hardness tester equipped with a Knoop indenter. The Knoop indenter was used throughout this work because indentations obtained by means of a Vickers indenter are considerably distorted due to the anisotropy of the elastic constants in titanium. Most of the piers and other pile-supported marine structures in the New York City Harbor area were constructed prior to the widespread use of currently available pile protective systems. As a result, the support piling of many existing marine structures have experienced deterioration to an extent that their structural sufficiency is impaired long before the useful life of the structures they support is over. This situation presents special and unique problems of how to restore the structural integrity of these piles while at the same time allowing full use of the structures they support. Spearin, Preston & Burrows is a 100 year old New York City-based marine construction firm specializing in waterfront and foundation construction. In recent years it has undertaken and successfully completed several unusual projects in the New York City Harbor area involving the rehabilitation of existing, deteriorated piling underneath major, economically important marine structures. This work was accomplished using techniques that permitted full use of these structures. Several different pile rehabilitation systems were used, each having their own particular application to the deterioration problems of the piles supporting each structure.
