When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Investigations by the Bureau of Mines and by mining-research departments of European countries have established definitely the value of rock-dusting to prevent or limit the propagation of coal-mine explosions. Its effectiveness in this connection has been demonstrated not only by research but by actual coal-mine explosions in which hundreds of lives have been saved because of its presence. In a general way this paper gives pertinent facts concerning rock-dusting practices in the United States. Information has been obtained from many reliable sources, and various coal-mining companies have furnished data on cost and other details.

The time-to-fracture test has been applied to pure platinum and to two alloys of platinum under the special conditions of small cross-sectional area of the specimens and of a test temperature above the annealing temperature. While the results are similar in character to those secured with large specimens of steel at temperatures below the annealing temperatures, two differences are noted: (I) an upward inflection in the curves for log stress vs. log time for the alloys, and (2) a sharp break in the curve for log stress vs. log time for pure platinum when single crystals filled the wire. The experiments showed that: (I) platinum and 10 per cent rhodium-platinum maintained their strengths at IIOO°C. better than did to per cent iridium-platinum, and (2) the rhodium-platinum after a time exceeded the iridium-platinum in strength at IIOO°C. Platinum alloys in their service at high temperatures encounter conditions somewhat similar to those that exist in the usual form of the "time-to-fracture"l test with steel. This paper is intended primarily to present results obtained by a "time-to-fracture" test under conditions approximating actual service for platinum (at the temperature IIOO°C. under oxidizing conditions) with three materials, pure platinum (99.99 per cent), a platinum alloy with 10 per cent iridium, and a platinum alloy with 10 per cent rhodium. The experimental procedure differed from that previously used in this type of measurement in that the samples were of small diameter (0.010 in.), were fully annealed, and were tested at a temperature definitely above their annealing points (600°C., IOOO°C. and 1050°C., respectively, for 60 per cent cold reduction and 15 min. heating time2,3). The experimental arrangement was similar to that previously described,' using as heating unit a small, horizontal, platinum-wound furnace, ½ by 12 in., maintained at constant temperature by an automatic controller. The samples were 0.010-in. wires, which had been annealed at 1200°C. by drawing them slowly through the furnace. The time-to-fracture was measured electrically. Elongation was not determined because of the difficulties inherent in the experimental arrangement. Life—that is, the time-to-fracture—was considered the important property in these first tests. No attempt was made to measure the reduction in area, but the types of fracture were noted qualitatively; in the text they are referred to as (I) the normal, plastic, or necked fracture, (2) the knife-edge fracture, and (3) the brittle or intercrystalline fratture with small reduction of area. Results for different constant applied stresses are plotted in Fig. I. In all cases at least two trials were made for each stress, although they cannot always be indicated separately on the curves. "The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. Based on 1970 figures, it was reported that the production of 1 ton of copper in the U.S.A. required 111. 8 x 106 BTU of energy, of which 60. 7 x 106 BTU (54.3%) was consumed in mining and processing (l)The survey of Canadian mills, conducted by CANMET and reported to the CMP meeting of 1978 (2), showed the following milling energy consumption figures (approximate averages):"

In 1979 our company undertook the project of infra-structural work of White Swan Lake Hotel, (International class ) Guangzhou. Visit to the site showed that it was situated at the riverside, covering an area of 54,000 M2 with 30,000 M2 of which reclaimed from Pearl River. The material used for reclamation was black sand which was dredged from the nearby riverbed. The sand had the properties of high permeability and very low internal friction. The basement of the building was 6.2 m below ground level and 3 m lower than the riverbed. Apart from the pile foundation, a diaphragm wall was to be constructed prior to the commencement of excavation work for basement. A feasibility study was carried out to determine the method of construction which would maximize utilization of the plants and equipment that were available in the execution of the aforesaid foundation works. This report concerns only the construction of the diaphragm wall and the performance of the plants employed. A detailed delineation of the construction method is herein discussed

Dynamic methods of load testing piles using a drop hammer to generate the input force have been in use for many years. These systems are based on the wave equations developed at the Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, Ohio in the late 1960's and are well documented. Such tests are generally restricted to preformed driven piles, the driving hammer being a convenient means of generating large input forces. In 1979 the CEBTP (France) was sponsored by the FNTP (Fédération Nationale des Travaux Publics) to undertake research into existing classical methods and to develop a test that would be equally applicable to bored cast in place piles. The result of this research programme is a methodology known as SIMBAT, and which was included in a series of class A prediction trials in Belgium in 1987 (Refs 1 & 2, Paquet 1987, 1988). The purpose of this paper is: a) to examine the type of 'dynamic'/'static? load test correlations that can be obtained. b) to highlight the differences between the classical' methods and the 'SIMBAT' technique.

"Vale Long Harbour Processing Plant (LHPP) was designed to process Voisey’s Bay nickel concentrate into finished nickel and associated copper and cobalt products. The plant includes a secondary grinding circuit comprising two Stirred Media Detritors (SMDs) operating in parallel. The ultrafine grinding circuit was designed to process concentrate at a rate of 33 t/h and produce a ground product (P80) of 20 µm to feed the leach circuits. Start-up of the grinding circuit at LHPP was undertaken in December 2014.The objective of this paper will be to describe the design, commissioning, start-up and performance of the secondary grinding circuit with a focus on the two Metso SMD-355-C mills. Following a brief overview of Vale’s LHPP and the SMD technology, the paper will review the design of the SMD secondary grinding circuit from lab tests through to scale-up performance prediction. This will be followed by the results of circuit commissioning outlining some of the issues raised and addressed after which SMD performance will be outlined. Specifically, the SMD circuit grinding performance will be examined since start-up which will include the effect of media size and wear on grinding. Furthermore, impeller wear will be examined by determining initial “shear volume” and worn “shear volume” as well as its effect on mill power and the means to maintain it. The paper closes with a discussion on grinding performance."

This report describes results of beneficiation and smelting studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on chromite samples from the Emma Belle and Seiad Creek prospects in the Seiad Creek area, northern California. Samples were chosen from this area because the ore is typical of disseminated types that represent a sizable domestic reserve. The two samples were similar in composition, and both responded in like manner to gravity beneficiation. As the ore was banded, considerable coarse gangue was rejected in laboratory sink-float from a minus-3/4-inch, plus-6-mesh fraction without excessive chromium loss at a medium density of 3.32. An average of 85.6 percent of the chromium was recovered in the sink product, which analyzed 35 percent chromic oxide (Cr203). Tabling yielded concentrates containing 49 percent or more Cr203; however, recoveries, ranged from only 33 to 45 percent. A combination of tabling and electrostatic separation of the table middlings showed that the chromium recovery could be increased to about 73 percent; the composite concentrate averaged 53 percent Cr203.

The largest potential reserves of manganese in Nevada are in the Pioche district. To date, these large reserves of 10-to l2-percent manganese cannot be upgraded economically. Other large, low-grade deposits, such as the Virgin River and Boulder City deposits in Clark County, cannot be considered immediate sources of manganese. Reserves of the principal manganese deposits in Nevada, based on the most reliable estimates, total about 17 million tons analyzing 7.6 to 13.6 percent manganese. Most of the deposits are of a type that cannot be prospected systematically but have been prospected and developed in the course of productive mining operations. To realize production from low-grade deposits that are amenable to concentration, a ready market must be provided. Thus far, Government stockpiles have been the major outlet for these low-grade ores. Research and experimentation over a period of years have led to development of several processes technologically applicable to these low-grade ore bodies, but their economics is not sufficient to allow competition with imported ores on the open market.

The characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previosly ously in the literature.' This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors1 previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (I) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calciurn-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. Maintaining an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs is the overall goal of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. One method of achieving this goal is to conserve scarce metals by cladding a plentiful base metal, such as iron, with a scarcer metal. To investigate cladding, a vacuum-rolling mill capable of rolling bimetal specimens at temperatures to 1,300° C in a residual gas pressure of 2 x 10-5 torr was established. Metals that were successfully bonded to iron included stainless steels, chromium, nickel, nickel alloys, copper, and several refractory metals including molybdenum and titanium. The effects of the rolling temperature, reduction in thickness, rolling speed, and residual air pressure on bonding strength and bend ductility of the bimetals were determined. Optimum rolling conditions produced bimetals with bond shear strength essentially equal to that of the iron base metal.

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-

A pesquisa relativa ao transporte ferroviário no Brasil tem se intensificado nos últimos anos visando principalmente a melhoria no desempenho do par roda-trilho. Isso se deve a demanda de se transportar cada vez mais carga por eixo visando uma redução no custo de transporte. Através de mudanças na microestrutura do material ou de mudanças na composição das ligas utilizadas na fabricação pode se aumentar a resistência do par roda-trilho. Neste trabalho foi analisada a influência de diferentes microestruturas (puramente perlíticas e perlíticas-bainíticas), obtidas através de tratamento térmico por dilatometria, nas propriedades de um aço alto carbono similar ao utilizado em rodas convencionais classe C destinadas a implementação pesada com altas cargas e baixas velocidades. Foram realizados tratamentos isotérmicos em dez temperaturas diferentes para um aço eutetóide. As análises incluíram técnicas metalográficas (definição de fases presentes e distância interlamelar da perlita), ensaios mecânicos de dureza e ensaios magnéticos (saturação magnética e ruído de Barkhausen).

This Bureau of Mines report describes the fieldwork and subsequent analysis to determine physical properties, stress distribution, and several aspects of rock behavior as a necessary evaluation for a typical mine opening. All work was done at a test site on the 3300 level, Crescent mine, Coeur d'Alene mining district, Idaho. Free field stress beyond the influence of the opening was also determined. Conventional overcore technique with the three-component borehole deformation gage developed by the Bureau of Mines was used in three drill holes. Three field verification tests were performed using a gage newly developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center in an approach herein termed "initial deformation method." Use of this method validated that aspect of overcore theory which predicts that similar deformation effect occurs in the wall rock around the perimeter of an opening in rock under stress. Also described are all drilling procedures and performances. Physical property determinations were made on rock samples obtained from the three overcore drill holes. Twelve physical properties with a total of [532] values were obtained at various drill hole orientations and depths. Exhaustive statistical tests were utilized in the analysis of these physical properties. Further elaborated are statistical inferences based on these analyses. Extensive analysis and interpretation of Crescent mine geology are also described.

"VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

The mining industry in South Africa has developed its own environmental guidelines in the form of an Aide-Mémoire1,which is an extension of the previous rehabilitation provisions to include all aspects of the environment and all phases of a mining operation. This development, at the time, recognized an international trend towards the formalization of environmental management in mining practice, which resulted from the realization of the large environmental liabilities that mines could face, particularly on closure. Over the past decade the international environmental focus in the mining industry has moved from operational management, to the reduction of liability on mine closure. Mine closure guidelines are being developed internationally by nations (for example, SRK, 19982) and by large mining groups (for example, Rio Tinto, 19983). In South Africa the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) is presently reviewing the Aide-Mémoire to bring it in line with international and local developments and a separate mine closure plan is being considered.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Almost any subsidence monitoring program may face the following difficulties:
