The Haldane gas-analysis apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines is patterned after the device developed by Haldane 4/ and differs from it only in structural modifications that have been added to facilitate operation and simplify construction. The apparatus was developed to permit determination of carbon dioxide, combustible gases, and oxygen with a degree of accuracy not attainable with apparatus of the types ordinarily used for the analysis of fuel gases, flue gases, and similar mixtures. The Haldane apparatus is used by the Bureau of Mines chiefly in the analysis of air samples collected in coal and metal mines and other underground workings and is applied also in the analysis of many other types of gas mixtures when accurate determination of certain constituents is desired.

Big Creek Tunnel 2, constructed in 1912, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, east of Fresno. It is horseshoe and circular shaped with a 3.6m (12ft) diameter and extends 6.6km (4.1mi). Historically, tunnel performance suffers from highly jointed rock and low cover. In 2003, leaks were observed surfacing through outcrops of highly jointed graniodiorite, and subsequently investigated by visual inspection, joint mapping, ground penetrating radar, and a water-tracing survey. Several grouting targets were identified as a result of these investigations. Cement grouting was used to fill void spaces, broken rock and open joints expected to exist behind the concrete and steel liners. Project work consisted of grout hole drilling through the existing concrete liners, and grout placement through squeeze packers supplied by standard grout hose and portable grout plants. Grout pressures were typically 20?30 psi. Grouting was completed in 16 days with a total of 1,550 sacks of Type II/III grout placed at the three likely leak source areas. No grout was observed exiting the tunnel and the leak was stopped.

RECENTLY there has been considerable interest in the production and use of extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wire-drawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names. No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made. K. Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification.

The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g. tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions is studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes, and chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation is analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff. Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

The use of iron powder during the postwar conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: 1. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price—The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. Iron powder parts are compressed in automatic presses to definite size, shape, and density. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. Several drum-type, low-intensity dry magnetic separators have recently been described 1,2,3,4 all of which share at least two generic similarities. The magnet consists of a multiplicity of poles of alternating polarity and, the speed of the drum shell, relatiw to the magnet, is such that the magnetics are agitated through rotation of the magnetic particles around their individual axes. The speed of the drum relative to the magnet (differential speed) determines the frequency of the field reversals. For effective agitation this frequency generally has to be above a specific value, which varies according to the mean particle size of the magnetics. With separators of small diameter, say less than 11/2 ft., a sufficient differential speed for treatment of fine magnetite can be attained only by rotating both the magnet and the drum separately; separators of large diameter may attain sufficiently high differential speeds with stationary magnets. Separators of large diameter thus have the advantage of simplicity of design. The capacity of a separator of this type is directly proportional to the speed of the shell. As the centrifugal force opposing the magnetic force increases at a slower rate than the peripheral speed of the shell when drum diameter is increased, large drums can be operated with higher peripheral speeds. Thus they have a higher capacity than smaller drums. Separation is also a statistical phenomenon, i.e. the grade of concentrate improves as the number of agitations or rotations of the magnetic particles per separation increases. As separators of large diameter have space for a large number of magnets they are best suited for production of optimum grade concentrate. The statements above are general clues For separator design. In the following an expression IS derived showing a more exact relationship between the pertinent separator variables. As both magnetic attraction and centrifugal forces are directly proportional to the volume of the affected bodies, complications in mathematical analysis, arising from variable particle size, are avoided by considering the force per unit volume of affected material. For the magnetic force per unit volume Runolinna (3) gives the following equation: V " 1 + N(ur, - 1) uo dr (1) where ur and uo stand for the relative permeability and the permeability of vacuum, respectively, N is the demagnetization factor, B the intensity of the magnetic field, and r the distance from the face of the magnetic pole. The permeability of a specific magnetite ore can generally be considered as a constant. The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

Computer assisted finite element model analysis, originally developed to study stress distributions in aircraft, has been modified into a versatile mining program, that can be used to assist the engineer with predictions of mine subsidence. International Exploration, Inc. has developed an in-house finite element model program which incorporates a multitude of factors influencing mine subsidence such as mine design, physical rock properties, structure, faults, joints and topography. Finite element analysis of a mine model can mathematically determine the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses within each of the elements forming the model. By comparing the calculated in-situ stresses to the actual rock strengths, high risk regions within a mine can be identified. These potentially unstable regions of the mine can be allowed to fail within the model and the resultant stress redistribution and element movement calculated. Thus, the effects of the mine collapse at the surface can be predicted for the purpose of determining the potential damage, if any, that could occur to surface structures from deep mine failure. Stabilization materials can also be mathematically inserted into the model to design and analyze the effectiveness of subsidence prevention programs. Two examples are presented of the finite element program being used to predict mine subsidence at substantially different geologic and mining provinces in Pennsylvania.

This report updates an accounting of mines and prospects in the Seafoam mining district, Custer County, Idaho, begun during mineral appraisal of the Idaho Primitive Area. Thirty-two mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; most previously known locations were field checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's major deposits include polymetallic fissure veins of gold-silver-lead-zinc-copper hosted by granodiorite and quartz monzonite which have been intruded by dikes ranging in composition from rhyolite to dacite, and vein type replacements of silver-lead-zinc-copper hosted by calcareous xenoliths imbedded in major intrusives. These deposits may be related to the intrusion of the Rapid River pluton or the Casto pluton. The dominant northwest structural trend is parallel to an aeromagnetic high, a weak gravity salient, and the Blue Bunch Mountain dike swarm.

"Highmont, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, operates a 25,000 ton/day mine and concentrator located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. Construction of the plant commenced in the spring of 1979, and production from one grinding line began in late December 1980. The second grinding line began production in March 1980.The ore body consists of two main zones, the east and west pits, containing 134 million tons of ore, averaging 0.26% Cu and 0.27% Mo. Mineralization consists mainly of chalcopyrite (2/3), bornite (1/3), and molybdenite.The concentrator design incorporates an A-B-C grinding circuit (auto mill ball mill - crusher), followed by bulk flotation, copper-moly separation and leaching for moly concentrates. The two grinding and bulk flotation circuits are parallel and independent. Concentrate storage is provided between bulk flotation and copper¬moly separation and also ahead of molybdenite leaching. The plant design has been previously described in some detail. (""THE HIGHMONT CONCENTRATOR"" by C. V. Sibbald, CIMM Bulletin, March 1981).This paper will outline some of the problems associated with the construction, startup and early operation phases of the concentrator. The objective is to help others avoid some of the potential pitfalls by outlining those areas where problems occurred, or where things went well. Criticism of design or equipment is not intended."

The Transformation AGO project, constructed between 2005 and 2008, featured a foundation trade contract that included design of pile caps and grade beams and construction of 138 permanent micropiles. The new foundation works were constructed within seven different settings ? each featuring a host of attributes challenging to constructability ? inside and outside the existing Art Gallery of Ontario, all while the gallery remained open for business. Transformation AGO resulted in several firsts for micropiles in the Toronto construction market: this was the first micropile trade contract with a multimillion dollar contract value; it featured the first static compressive load test performed beyond 7000 kN on a single micropile; the first static compressive load test beyond 8000 kN on an experimental pile cap supported by two test micropiles; and it was the first publicly funded project to go to tender with micropiles listed as the preferred foundation option. This paper outlines the successful application of micropiles at the landmark Transformation AGO project.

"It has been nearly eight years since rare-earth elements (REE) became the subject of frontpage headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomized in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al., 2016c; Mancheri, 2015).The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries such as the United States that was, and still is, totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand, and the Chinese sovereignty of the REEmarket on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016).The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly in late 2017 and were in six-year lows, before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REEmarket entrants (Barakos et al., 2016b; Rollat et al., 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China have impelled REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation process of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

As low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data were available for only one sesquisulfide (cerium sesquisulfide), it appeared desirable to augment the information for this class of compounds by measuring the sulfides of antimony and indium. In addition a pressing need existed for data on indium sulfide to supplement vaporization studies in progress in the Department of Mineral Technology, University of California. This Bureau of Mines paper reports low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations at 298.15° R. of antimony sesquisulfide of stoiehiometric composition (Sb2S3) and of indium sesquisulfide which was somewhat deficient in sulfur (In2S2.93). The data for the latter substance were adjusted to correspond to the stoichiome tric composition (In2S3 ) . Indium sesquisulfide has a lower entropy at 298.15' K, than either antimony sesquisulfide or cerium sesquisulfide, in line with the higher atomic density of the indium compound.

INJURY experience and related employment information are presented in the chapter for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1964. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present injury-frequency rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. All rates in the text are calculated separately on data before rounding, hence component rates may not add to the total rates shown in the tables. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in Volume III. COAL Injury experience of the coal mining industry was improved in 1964, as measured by the declines of 1 and 14 percent, respectively, in the frequency and severity rates. Although the total number of injuries increased in 1964, a slightly greater proportional increase in man-hours worked caused the frequency rate to drop to 44.65 per million man-hours. The injury-severity rate in 1964 was 7,832 days lost per million man-hours of exposure. Employment and injury data for 1964 are based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines. Fatality experience improved significantly with a record low number of 240 deaths in 1964. This total was 44 less than in 1963. The Nation's coal mines during 1964 were free of major disasters (a single accident resulting in the death of five men or more) for the first time since 1956. The

This report describes methods and techniques employed by The Glidden Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, in explorating an ilmenite-bearing sand deposit in Ocean County, New Jersey, during 1960 to determine ore reserve potential and the feasibility of mining and establishing a milling plant on the property for the production of ilmenite concentrate. The property covered approximately 1,250 acres. Comprehensive sampling by water-jet drilling indicated the deposit averaged 20 feet in thickness and contained 4.5 percent heavy minerals, of which 80 to 85 percent was ilmenite and leucoxene. Average depth of the water table as determined by auger boring was 16.8 feet. Pilot plant tests indicated that circular concentrators in combination with spiral concentrators would recover at least 80 percent of the heavy mineral content of the sands. It was estimated that sufficient ore reserve tonnage had been developed to supply the company's Baltimore chemicals division, pigments department, with a suitable grade ilmenite concentrate for a period of 20 years at the present rate of pigments production. The property was designated as Lakehurst mine and plans are in progress for mining development and plant construction.

The program is directed toward the abatement and control of machinery noise in underground coal mining operations. The study conclusions and specific problem areas which led to the definition of the recommended program are also briefly described.
