Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

This report describes the procedures and summarizes the results of an investigation of surface subsidence above caving blocks at the San Manuel mine, San Manuel, Ariz., in order to obtain quantitative information on subsidence and ground movement caused by mining large volumes of ore. This investigation is one part of an overall study of rock mechanics being undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Attention was given to the improvement of a rapid and precise method of surveying a large number of subsidence pins and cracks in the surface terrain. Photogrammetric methods were used as an adjunct to the triangulation subsidence surveying as well as in ordinary topographic work Maps of various kinds were prepared to show the results obtained. The computation of the survey notes was programed for an electronic digital computer at a saving of time and expense over the use of a desk calculator and trigonometric tables.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

"When hard times strike in the mining cycle, sites tighten their belts and focus on lowering their unit costs. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. Faced with these requirements, site personnel must turn to areas where they can focus their effort for maximum return. For many sites, both in Canada and overseas, focusing on improving flotation cell maintenance is one of the areas where gains can be made for minimum outlay. Due to resource limitations and/or lack of equipment understanding, maintenance on many sites is only conducted on a reactive basis, once equipment fails. This paper will promote the idea that mineral processors should become more familiar with their equipment so they can ensure that the plant’s ability to produce is not compromised. By better understanding the flotation equipment and ensuring the critical components are maintained, it should be possible to unlock value in an operation. Flotation equipment inspections will be discussed in detail, including key items to look for during these inspections. Potential approaches for predicting wear and change-out time for flotation equipment components will be also demonstrated. An example of one approach used at a South African nickel site will be given.INTRODUCTIONWith metal prices decreasing and operating costs rising, concentrator operators are looking for ways to improve their bottom line. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. To meet the expectation of shareholders, mineral processors must turn to areas where they can get the best return for their efforts. One area where there is a large opportunity for improvement is in the maintenance of flotation equipment.On many mine sites, both domestically and around the world, it is quite common to see the philosophy applied of repairing equipment only once it has failed. Though some sites have advanced enterprise management systems and monitoring programs, in the authors’ experience, the decision on flotation equipment maintenance is rarely made on a proactive basis. Two common trends that are evident in the mining industry are that operations are under pressure to keep the plant producing, and maintenance managers generally have very strict budget targets to meet. In addition to these factors, few sites have a good understanding of the financial implications of running with worn or broken flotation equipment. Knights, Jullian and Jofre (2006) summarize this situation well, stating that the lack of correlation between some commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers can lead to maintenance being seen only as a cost center (that needs to be reduced) rather than a tool for productivity improvement."

This paper on the out-and-fill method of mining is one of a series on mining methods published by the United States Bureau of Mines. It has been compiled chiefly from recent publications of the bureau describing in detail mining methods and costs at various mines. Other sources of information were the technical press, the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Mines Haudbook, and company reports. References other than those mentioned in Table 1, which lists the mines entering into this discussion and gives general data regarding them, are given in the body of the paper. The authors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of many operating officials, either through correspondence or in the course of numerous visits to their mines. DEFINITION OF CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The out-and-fill method of stoping is that method in which relatively small sections or slices are taken successively from the lower surface of a block of ground by open-stoping methods, the broken ore being removed and each section filled with waste material before the next is mined. This definition excludes shrinkage stoping, even with subsequent filling; it excludes square-set and fill methods; it excludes the Mitchell slice method, which may be classed as underhand square-setting; it excludes the systematic use of stull sets and filling, which is a variation of square-setting; it excludes any method involving the caving of the ore, walls, or overburden during the process of extraction, although caving may be allowed to take place when the waste fill is withdrawn for use in other stopes; and it excludes any open-stope method without filling. Through variations, which will be discussed later, the cut-and-fill method merges into shrinkage stoping, open stoping, or square-setting. The use of casual timber support, such as props, stulls, or timber cribs for holding up weak portions of the back does not constitute a change from cut-and-fill to square-set mining.

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It is a pleasure, for several reasons, to be here at this 13th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining. Of course it's always a pleasure to be able to see and reacquaint myself with many long-time friends; but it's also a pleasure, or 1 should say worthwhile, because I take something back with me, some knowledge about mining that lets me do my job better and more safely. if I can do that, I've accomplished my purpose in being at a conference such as this. This conference is a little different, though. I have to earn my stay. I have to earn it by telling you a story; a story about mining through a mile of rock to get from one coal seam to the same seam on the other side of an ancient river channel; a story about mine personnel taking over the job from a contractor; a story about having to mine through two faults after the hard part was supposed to be over, but, most importantly, it's a story about how it was accomplished successfully and safely by a group of ordinary coal miners possessed with determination, belief in themselves, and a "can do" attitude. If you can take any part of my story and use it to do your job better and more safely, then I will have accomplished my purpose in being here today. Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation's Galatia Mine is located in Southern Illinois near the town of Harrisburg in Saline County, about 350 miles south of Chicago and 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. Construction of the mine began in 1982, and the first coal was shipped in 1984 from the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam, 550' below the surface. Mining began in the Herrin No. 6 Seam, 100' above the No. 5 Seam, on April 1, 1985. Mining in both seams began by using the room-and-pillar method. In 1989, the No. 6 Seam was converted to longwall mining, as was the No. 5 Seam in 1992. Today, all mining is done by the longwall method except for the required development work, which is performed by continuous miners. A heavy-media preparation plant with a 4.2 million-ton annual clean-coal capacity processes the coal. By the end of 1994, with annual production now exceeding 4 million tons, we will have shipped over 30 million tons of steam and metallurgical coal throughout the United States and the world. Most of the coal has been used as the primary source of fuel to generate electricity for the city of St. Louis. The No. 5 Seam coal can be used as a semi-soft coking coal or as a high-Btu, relatively low-sulfur steam coal. Its use allows utilities to comply with Phase I of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 without installing flue gas desulfurization units or blending with other coals. The Herrin No. 6 Seam is a high-Btu, medium-sulfur steam coal that requires blending to meet Phase I requirements. Because the No, 6 Seam coal does not meet the Clean Air Act Amendments' Phase I compliance standards, we were forced to cease mining operations in the No. 6 Seam, leaving 170,000,000 tons of minable coal in the ground. Last month the Galatia Mine became a single-seam operation mining the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam only. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and the resultant S02 emission limitations on electrical power generation plants effectively eliminate, beginning in 1995, the near-term potential for profitable mining of the Galatia Mine's high sulfur Herrin No. 6 Seam coal. Because of the Clean Air Act Amendments, it is virtually impossible to market high-sulfur coals like the No. 6 coal unless the mine location and mining conditions enable greatly depressed sales prices to cover costs. The safety record of the coal-mining industry in 1968 worsened appreciably .in fatality experience but was slightly better in nonfatal-injury experience. Work fatalities in 1968 totaled 311 and occurred at a frequency rate of 1.33 per million man-hours or worktime. The fatality total was 89 higher, and the rate of occurrence was 45 percent higher than the corresponding figures of 222 fatal injuries with a frequency rate of 0.92 in 1967. The worsened fatality record in 1968 resulted primarily from two major disasters (a single accident which results in the death of five men or more) which killed 87 men, nine in one and 78 in the second. The total of 9,639 nonfatal injuries was the lowest annual figure in complete records back to 1930. The frequency rate of 41.12 nonfatal injuries per million man-hours of worktime for 1968 was the second lowest annual rate of occurrence. The severity rate of all injuries, 10,513 days lost or charged per million man-hours, and the average severity, 248 days lost per injury, in 1968 were the worst annual data in the series started in 1944. Total worktime of 234.4 million man-hours and coal output of 553.3 million tons in 1968 were, respectively, 3 and 1 per- cent lower than in 1967.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. An understanding of the thermodynamics of smelting copper anode slimes is a prerequisite for improvements to the process. During slimes smelting, a silver-copper selenide matte is formed and subsequently oxidised to silver metal. As part of a series of investigations, molten silver selenide matte was oxidised at 1 100 degrees C with pure oxygen. The chemical potential diagram for the system was developed and used for qualitative prediction of the results of the experiments. A simple, computational thermodynamic model of converting is presented, the adjustable parameters of which were determined by matching the model with the experimental results. The practical usefulness of the model was demonstrated by predicting the effect on silver recovery of smelting temperature and of using either oxygen or air as the smelting gas

The Bureau of Mines, through a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Defense, conducted research to recover silver from aircraft scrap. Silver was recovered by an electrolytic method from stainless steel honeycomb sections separated from the aircraft. These sections had been constructed by sandwiching a stainless steel honeycomb core between stainless steel sheets and then brazing the assembly with a silver alloy. Over 300 pounds of silver was used in the B-58 bomber, concentrated in certain honeycomb sections of the aircraft. Following shredding of the aircraft parts, an average of 95 percent (ranging 67 to 100 percent) of the silver was recovered in a single electro-refining step. After the electrorefined product was magnetically cleaned, purity of the recovered silver was greater than 99.3 percent.

Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

In this Bureau of Mines report a selection process has identified 14 nonstockpiled materials (cesium, gallium, hafnium, indium, osmium, rhenium, rhodium, rubidium, ruthenium, scandium, selenium, tellurium, thallium, and zirconium) that are linked to the continuing evolution of high-technology fields such as electronics, catalysis, and energy, and that have limiting factors associated with domestic availability. A qualitative assessment of the "potential criticality" of these materials was made through a consideration of end uses, demand trends and forecasts, production, mineral reserves, byproduct status, alternative supply sources, substitution and conservation options, and recyclability.
