The Neves-Corvo copper-tin mine is the highest-grade large-tonnage copper operation in the world and is now arguably the most significant producing base-metal mine in Europe, rating in the top ten world producers of both copper and tin. A description is given of the initial exploration work and the development of the project from the orebody discovery in the Iberian Pyrite Belt of southern Portugal in 1977 to full operating capacity in 1990. The chronological account includes discussion of the main organisational, financial, technical and environmental decisions and of the various difficulties encountered, and the challenges of the future are identified. This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

The last one decade in India had witnessed phenomenal growth in the coal, lignite, iron ore, limestone and many other minerals. To meet the production of minerals, the energy requirement is also very high both in terms of petroleum products and electrical energy. Because of spiralling prices of crude oil and also of the electrical energy, attempts have been made by various mining companies to select energy efficient mining machineries (in underground and surface) mines, together with energy efficient mining and mineral processing operations. Mineral sector of India is working seriously in tune with the Planning Commission stipulations to conserve energy.Apart from energy use (both electrical and fossil fuels) in mining, it is also significantly contributing to the cost of mineral processing depending on the quality of ore/rock being processed. Over the years a number of studies have been initiated and implemented to reduce cost of energy bill. An attempt has been made to present the various aspects of energy conservation, Impact of Energy Conservation Act 2001, Relevance of energy audit, areas of energy consumption and conservation efforts, etc in this paper. The paper also deals with some of the case studies to show how energy conservation programs has been implemented in the Indian mineral sector.

INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. Em usinas siderúrgicas integradas a coque, o carvão mineral tem papel fundamental principalmente na produção de coque metalúrgico, que será utilizado nos altos-fornos para produção do ferro-gusa. O coque é produzido a partir de misturas, de carvões minerais com diferentes propriedades, formuladas para atender os requisitos operacionais do processo de coqueificação e a garantir a qualidade do ferro-gusa que será produzido nos altos-fornos. Além disso, está mistura deve ter o menor custo possível uma vez que a maior parte do carvão metalúrgico utilizado no Brasil é importado, representando assim uma grande parcela do custo do aço. O grande desafio do setor é obter misturas de carvões que atendam a coqueria e produzam coque com alta qualidade e baixo custo. Para tanto, é necessário uma otimização de vários processos, desde a compra e transporte do carvão até sua estocagem, formação das misturas e abastecimento da coqueria. Com isto, este trabalho vem com o objetivo de sugerir uma otimização e planejamento da mistura de carvão para a coqueria com a utilização de rejeitos plásticos de menor valor agregado na mistura que possibilitem a produção de coque com menor custo e com a qualidade exigida no processo de fabricação de aço.

The paper reviews recent investigations of the impact of corrosion on the performance of both plain and coated Swellex rock bolts. It addresses the problems associated with estimating and predicting corrosion rates of friction bolts, and based on field data it suggests an empirical relationship to predict corrosion rates. A review of the necessary qualities for a protective coating leads to recent experience with coated Swellex bolts that suggest that they can contribute to extending the useful life of Swellex bolts in potentially corrosive environments.

The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

Until ten years ago, the largest load tests on drilled shafts (bored piles) were about 3,000 tons (27MN). These tests were made with kentledge (large weights, usually concrete blocks) stacked up as a reaction to the applied downward load of a hydraulic jack. In some cases, the jack load is resisted by a load frame held down by piles or anchors connected to the frame. When the test loads exceed 3,000 tons (27MN), these methods become cumbersome expensive and time consuming. The Osterberg (O-cell) test method does not require any reaction load. It has become the only cost effective method for static load testing of high capacity shafts. Over 650 load tests have been performed with this method, 86 of which were over 3,000 tons (27 MN) and 40 over 5,000 tons (44 MN), and the largest test load was 17,000 tons (150 MN). Tests have been made on sands below the water table, shafts ending in rock sockets, and cemented sands and gravels. Test results and details for selected load tests are discussed.

Determine the advantages and operational limitations of water-let-assisted cutting used with mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted a research study to evaluate water-Jet-assisted cutting both in the laboratory and in underground mines. Earlier research on water-jet-assist was limited to laboratory studies where bit speeds and penetration depths were very low and large cutting force reductions were reported. For the past years, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has been concerned with the application of water-jet-assisted cutting under more realistic mining conditions. Study Results Water-jet-assisted cutting employs a mechanical cut-ting bit combined with a moderate to high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip to assist in the cutting process. Recent Bureau findings show that the addition of the water jet to the cutting bit can improve cutting in harder materials, significantly reduce respirable dust and bit wear, and increase product size. Some of these findings are presented as follows.

The use of ceramics to protect equipment subjected to wear in abrasive and corrosive applications has been accepted by most plants as the industry norm. Little is, however, known about alternative special ceramic based products which are available for the protection of plant assets. With careful engineering, impact resistant ceramics can be used in high impact zones using modern ceramic technology. Properly selected and properly installed, ceramics will provide a tough wear resistant lining for protection against abrasion and impact. Basalt, on the other hand, is widely used in coal washing plant process pipes with varying degrees of success. Basalt is normally not used for the lining of bends, ?T? pieces or reducers due to the reduced wear resistance compared to alumina ceramic. The advantage is a much reduced initial capital cost. A patented ceramic composite non-return valve solved an old problem encountered in the operation of medium sumps. The design approach overcomes the lack of functionality of alternative designs and reduces valve wear while preventing medium settlement during plant shutdown periods. Direct bonded ceramic pulley lagging is becoming the industry norm, eliminating most of the problems encountered with conventional pulley lagging systems.

The Bureau of Mines used a linear cutting apparatus equipped with a 7-inch disk cutter to cut grooves in marble, limestone, granite, and quartzite under a normal force of 7,000 lb. The size distribution of the muck for various grooves was determined through sieve analysis. A statistical search showed that Weibull distribution describes the size distribution better than other available functions. Results indicate that fineness modulus, chip population, and dimension of the largest chip can be used as indicators of cutting efficiency. The results correlate with those obtained from the boring machines and other lab experiments. In order to successfully produce columbium pyrochlore concentrates, St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation had to face two principal problems met in several new operations but possibly made more acute than usual owing to the newness of the project. 1.-The ore is particularly complex, as it is made up of an elaborate intermingling of carbonates and discontinuous ultra-alkaline rock bodies of various ages and types in which no less than seventy mineral have been re-ported. Obvious petrographic or structural controls are lacking. Ore boundaries have to be defined on the basis of assay results and the determination of several minerals which occur in trace amounts. 2.-The pyrochlore concentrates produced had to com-ply with a set of stringent specifications. This fact, combined with the low Cb205 content of the ore, necessitated the use of a beneficiation process that would have to operate at a concentration ratio greater than 100:1. A brief description of the mill circuit is given. Mill stability was obtained through extensive mineralogical study of the mill feed coupled with close geological and engineering control of the mining operations.

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. This volume deals with the development of a microcomputer based training cost model (TCM) which can be used to analyze training cost implications of various types of training. The model has been developed using Aston Tate's dBASE III plus language. The computer program and a test run of the model are presented in this report.

Terrestrial heat flow has been determined for four boreholes in the Montreal area. The mean value of the results (uncorrected for glacial effects) is 0.790 ± 0.053 x 10-6 cal/ cm2/sec (95 per cent confidence limits). Thermal gradients were determined using a thermistor probe and d-c bridge, and also by a new method using a probe-contained phase-shift oscillator, the output frequency of the oscillator being a function of probe temperature. Thermal conductivity determinations were made on core from the boreholes, using a divided bar apparatus. INTRODUCTION T HIS paper concerns the terrestrial heat flow in the St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec, as determined from measurements on four of the numerous boreholes drilled in this region for gas and oil. The work has been supported by Geological Survey of Canada Re-search Grant 3-58, awarded to T. H. Clark and V. A. Saull. This sup-port is hereby gratefully acknowledged.

The economic interest of oceanic ferromanganese crusts and nodules is determined by high grades of major, rare and earth rare elements in these types of marine minerals [1]. Modern oceanic ferromanganese deposits have a global distribution with the largest fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean still remains a poorly explored region. The first ferromanganese deposits from the deep part of the Arctic Ocean were recovered almost at the same time in 2012 both in US and Russian cruises to the Chukchi Borderland (1) and Mendeleev Ridge (2). Preliminary results of mineral deposits from the first area were reported at UMI-2012 by James Hein et al. [2]. We present here the data of ferromanganese deposits from the Mendeleev Ridge.

The 20 Mt reverberatory furnace slag dump at Nkana in Zambia contains a substantial quantity of cobalt. A 40 MW DC arc furnace has been built at Chambishi for the purpose of recovering cobalt from the slag. The technology was jointly developed by Mintek and Anglovaal Mining Ltd (Avmin), and the furnace was designed by Bateman Titaco. Testwork at the 150?250 kW scale was conducted at AVRL, and larger scale piloting was conducted at Mintek (in partnership with Avmin) in a 3 MW DC arc furnace. Approximately 840 tons of Nkana dump slag (ranging from 0.66% Co) was processed at power levels around 1-2 MW. Good overall cobalt extraction was achieved, and approximately 100 tons of cobalt-bearing alloy was produced (containing 5 to 14% Co). This testwork demonstrated that the Nkana dump slag could be processed in a DC arc furnace of suitable design, to produce a cobalt-bearing alloy suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. Bateman Titaco were contracted to design and build the furnace, and the design team contained representatives from Avmin and Mintek. The project was conceived as a fast-track exercise, and many activities had to be run in parallel. Notable features of the furnace include an ABB power supply, a Concast conductive hearth, the refractory design, and copper cooling in the sidewalls. Power to the furnace was switched on during January 2001.

Nesse sentido, o papel das escórias no processamento do aço tem se tornado de muita importância. Com o objetivo da otimização das escórias, numerosos estudos têm sido conduzidos para uma melhor compreensão do efeito da composição química e demais propriedades da escória sobre a viscosidade, bem como, sua influência sobre o controle da limpeza inclusionária. Também se tem observado uma evolução das técnicas experimentais de laboratório que são empregadas para a investigação estrutural e medidas das propriedades físicas das escórias. Essa evolução e investigação são fundamentais, inclusive, para o ambiente prático da indústria do aço.

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.
