Mining companies in order to compete and succeed in being viable business propositions must look to the future and select mining methods which guarantee improved efficiency and productivity as well as lower costs. A mining company in adopting a method of mining must now select the equipment most compatible. To some mines compatible equipment may mean the use of drilling jumbos to replace hand held rock drills or the use of load haul dump units to replace scrapers. To other more mechanised mines compatible equipment may mean the use of raise borers and road heading machines. The right decision will be where equipment compliments method in such a way that the working environment is improved, productivity is maximised, cost if reduced and all profit opportunities are optimised. An example of such is where the use of improved mining techniques in underground operations may see cut off grades reduced. By selectively mining these lower grade orebodies, smaller operation's ore reserves improve and the capacity for continued growth is enhanced.

"Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs.Disciplines that can lend some science to mineral paste flow include slurry transport, fresh concrete rheology, and soil mechanics. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles found in those related disciplines to mineral paste flows. Examples are given to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined from new perspectives. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are identified and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. In such a case the operators have to re-climb the learning curve, sometimes with expensive disruptions to the mining operation."

Geochemical data on Australian granites and pegmatites, and the mineral components of these rocks, are compared with that obtained in similar studies in the U.S.S.R. and elsewhere.The geochemical character of tin granites and the trace chemistry of their component minerals, particularly biotites, have some significance as ore guides in prospecting for tin.The primary geochemical dispersion of tin can be readily tested both in the laboratory and field by colourimetric methods, after volatilization with ammonium iodide, using modifications of the method described by Wood (1958).Secondary dispersions of tin in residual soils or alluvia can likewise be readly tested by rapid colourimetric methods in the field, but simple hydraulic methods, handling larger sample volumes, give reliable outlines of dispersion patterns.INTRODUCTIONThe search for tin ores, whether lode or placer in type, is usually directed on genetic grounds to country within or adjoining acid intrusives.A long established means of prospecting is to test samples for cassiterite by panning or other hydraulic separation.These methods can be used on crushed lode material or the natural materials from placers.With the advent of new techniques for extraction and for colourimetric analysis for tin (Wood, 1958 and Ross and White, 1961) a means is available for rapid analysis of materials not susceptible to quantitative testing by hydraulic methods because of the fine sizings of cassiterite or the occurrence of tin structurally held in minerals. The new methods thus opened up the field of tin prospecting by extending the search for ore guides to genetically associated rocks and minerals, wall ror-ks of veins and a wider range of superficial deposits.

"The Gateway Trans-Hudson Partnership (GTHP), a joint venture of WSP USA, Inc., AECOM USA, Inc, and STV Incorporated, is providing preliminary engineering services to Amtrak for the Hudson Tunnel project as well as supporting the NEPA process for getting the record of decision (ROD). This preliminary engineering design effort by GTHP includes geotechnical exploration and laboratory testing, design of structures, tunnel contract packaging and procurement planning.The Hudson Tunnel Project includes the construction of a new Hudson River Tunnel system and rehabilitation of the existing North River Tunnel. The new tunnel system will be constructed south of the existing North River Tunnel, from North Bergen under the Palisades to Hoboken in New Jersey, below the Hudson River, and connecting directly to Penn Station in New York (Fig. 1). The tunnel system is configured as two single-track tubes, intermediate ventilation shafts and cross passages in compliance with NFPA- 130 requirements. The adjacent surface alignment west of the Palisades will be constructed on viaducts, embankment and retained fills. The existing North River Tunnel (Fig. 2) consists of two single-track, electrified rail tunnels extending from tunnel portals in North Bergen, New Jersey to Penn Station in New York. Completed in 1910 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the tunnel opened at the same time as Penn Station and the four, single-track, East River tunnels that connect Penn Station to Queens and onto Long Island and New England, respectively. Both tunnels in the existing North River Tunnel were inundated with brackish river water during Superstorm Sandy (Fig. 3), resulting in the cancellation of all Amtrak and NJ Transit service into New York City for five days. After the brackish water was removed from the tunnels, the residual chlorides and sulfates have had on-going detrimental impacts on the interior concrete and rail systems."

With a return to coal as a major energy source for many companies, more emphasis is being placed on recovery of coal from areas that were formally considered uneconomical to mine. Increasing emphasis is being placed on production from low coal (seam height 48 inches or less) as high coal seams are depleated. Mining in restrictive spaces requires unusual work postures that can turn easy jobs into demanding ones. The objectives of this research were: (1) to evaluate the job demands associated with low coal mining, (2) to survey the anthropometry, strength, and aerobic capacity of low coal miners to determine if they differ from the U. S. population, and (3) to recommend, on the basis of available information, optimal job and work station design for low coal mining. This research effort was supported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The male and female anthropometry with the exception of weight and circumferential dimension, was quite similar to the comparison population. Back strength for male and female miners was significantly lower than the industrial worker population. This can be one of the contributing factors of low back problems in mining. Shoveling, timbering, and helpers tasks were physiologically demanding activities. However, due to the frequent stoppage of work, adequate rest was usually available. If work stoppage is corrected, then better work/rest schedules are essential.

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The Zinca area was chosen as a suitable location for an investigation of the weathering and secondary dispersion of platinum group metals from the Zone. It was concluded that platinum is immobile while within weathered rock, its mineral phases tending to alter from primary sulphides and tellurides to secondary Pt-Fe alloys. Palladium is variably mobile in weathered rock. In stream sediments Pt occurs mainly as small, dense, discrete particles, giving rise to a nugget effect, whereas Pd probably occurs as much finer particles or chemically adsorbed on to a suitable substrate. Pt shows a rapid decrease in sediments downstream from mineralisation, whereas Pd has a much slower downstream decay

A prototype weightometer soft sensor is under development at DebTech, De Beers in partnership with Venetia Mine. Its main function consists of an online data source; data validation; dynamic weightometer models; online detection of weightometer failure; alarming and replacing a weightometer when it fails. 31 dynamic models have been developed. All models with R2>= 85%are accepted as good models and they generally have satisfactory results with a daily error of less than 8% within 90% confidence level. By using those models, a set of soft sensors can be set up to cover all weightometers in the entire processes starting from primary crushing to the stock piles of dense medium separation (DMS). Some practical issues and concerns on model development are discussed, including data collection, data analysis, data pre-processing, variable selection, time delay, model training and model validation. When deploying the weightometer soft sensor system, the potential benefits could include: reduction in plant downtime; reduction in unplanned maintenance and even replacement of non-critical weightometers, particularly where nuclear weightometers are used. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of copper from 272 deposits in market economy countries. The deposits studied have demonstrated resources totaling 413 million metric tons of contained copper and account for more than 90 pct of the reserve base for market economy countries. Using data gathered as part of its Minerals Availability Program, the Bureau performed geologic, engineering, and economic evaluations in order to determine the copper production potential of each deposit. At the 1981 copper market price of $0.85/lb, the deposits studied could economically produce an estimated 88 million metric tons of copper (allowing for profit computed at a 15-pct rate of return), primarily from mines operating at the time of the study (1981). At this price, producing mines in market economy countries could economically produce only 2.1 million metric tons of refined copper per year. However, actual 1981 production was 6.2 million metric tons, indicating that many mines continued to operate even though they were unable to cover all production costs. For U.S. producing mines, the estimated average cost of production per pound (including profit at a 15-pct rate of return) was $0.15 higher than the average cost in other market economy countries.

The use of industrial minerals by the chemical industry as raw materials for manufacturing and in processing spans a wide assortment of minerals. This chapter aims to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Its objective, to describe the uses of industrial minerals in the manufacture of chemicals, is attained by considering minerals used by the chemical industry in terms of the chemical element required and by giving particular emphasis to market factors. The mineral aspect, which is covered in the commodity chapters, is subordinated and attention is focused on the chemical and market aspects. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. The elements derived from petroleum, hydrogen and carbon, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potash, and nitrogen for fertilizers and titanium dioxide for pigments. After eliminating on this basis, our definition leaves six elements of major importance: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry as shown in Table 1 "Salt Brine Derivatives" (Anon., 1967), which charts the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake type brines which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland type brines from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake type yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak type produced mainly for lithium. Table 2 (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the chief industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products.

The oxidation behaviour of selenide matte with a substantial Cu content and low Ag differs significantly from that of high-Ag matte. Low-Ag selenide mattes display a large oxygen solubility and the upper boundary of the miscibility gap in the Ag-Cu-Se-O system is depressed to quite low Se contents. As a result, the formation of Ag metal is considerably delayed. The oxidised selenide matte, low in Se and with a relatively high oxygen content, has previously been termed oxymelt. With further oxidation, its composition enters the misciblity gap and crude Ag is formed. The sodium silicate slag captures very little of the SeO2 and the dissolved Ag2O(s) content of the slag is relatively small, with a Raoultian activity coefficient of 0.57. This value was found to be independent of the slag's Cu2O content

The damage zone behind a typical smooth-wall blast in the open pit was assessed by visually examining diamond drill core to identify blast-induced cracking, mapping core rock quality designations to identify changes in fracture frequency and conducting uphole seismic testing to determine changes in rock mass characteristics. The results from the three techniques show reasonable correlation. They suggest that major damage, in the form of fracturing of intact rock, occurs at least 7 m behind the smooth-wall blast and significant damage, in the form of opening and extension of calcite-filled fractures, at least 12 m from the blast. At greater distances the dominant damage mechanism is the loosening of existent joints within the rock mass. In the trachytes at El Soldado these damage mechanisms correspond to peak particle velocities of 2 000, 900 and 500 mm/s respectively

"The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) is a subsidiary of a five-year Economic and Regional Development Agreement, signed on June 11, 1984. The objectives of the M.D.A. are to strengthen and diversify the Nova Scotian mineral industry and to coordinate federal and provincial policies and programs. The agreement outlines the activities and responsibilities of each government, including the division of the cost (60:40, federal: provincial) between governments. The agreement established a framework for joint planning to avoid overlap or duplication of programs.The M.D.A. programs are broadly divided into five sectors (Table 1 and Fig. 1): Geoscience, Minerals Technology, Development, Firm Specific and Public Information. Each sector is administered by a subcommittee composed of one federal member and one provincial member. The subcommittees report to a Management Committee. The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) Management Committee is made up of Dr. Jack Reeves from EMR and Dr. Richard Potter from the NSDME.The Geoscience subcommittee, co-chaired by Peter Giles (NSDME) and William Poole (EMR), manages the regional geologic, geochemical and geophysical studies in the province. Included in this sector are studies into mineral deposits and the basic geological relationships between mineral deposits.The Mineral Technology sector is co-chaired by the authors, Don Doyle (CANMET) and Pat Hannon (NSDME). This sector of the M.D.A. conducts studies into mineral processing, sampling, deposit byproduct commodities and project feasibility analysis."
