In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/. These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the mounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating beers dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

Analyses of statistical data indicate that haulage accidents are one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, and that the rate of accidents in transportation has been increasing during the past few years. These previous analyses were performed by correlating accident or fatality data at a rather high level of miner activity. In this present investigation, underground surveys were made by observing conditions and activities in some detail at a rather low level of activity in an attempt to understand factors contributing to hazards in the specific situations observed. The aim of the current study was to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts observed; and, following this, to provide recommendations for additional research and development to reduce accident potential in underground transportation. The major project tasks are diagrammed together with the task outputs in figure 1-1. Initially, a preliminary study of ell underground haulage operations was performed in order to establish the kinds of data needed and to provide the rationale leading to the data requirement. At the same time, the various types of haulage equipment used for each operation were defined. A preliminary analysis of each type of haulage operation was performed in order to establish the sequence of tasks required to operate haulage equipment. These tasks were transferred directly onto observation forms, and were used in developing interview forms. In parallel with the task analysis, a review was made of accidents and hazards that might occur during each type of operation.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of a longwall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.

The Menominee Range of northern Michigan was a major producer of direct shipping iron ore for nearly a century. When the last underground mine on the Range ceased operation in 1978, it marked the end of an era. For since the start of mining in the early 1880's the district has gone through a Lull cycle from the start-up of mining through close-down. During this period over 200 million long tons of iron ore were produced and shipped from nearly 100 mining operations. This development and production spanned the time from when the United States advanced from an essentially rural-agriculatural society through the industrial revolution and into the beginnings of the computer and space age. There are many lessons that can be learned from such a rich history. This report attempts to provide ouch a lesson. Through the use of case histories, deficiencies in past mining practices and mine closure procedures that have resulted in current mine related problems are documented. These problems -an be grouped into three areas; 1) subsidence 2) hydrological or drainage problems and 3) problems related to inadequate mine shaft sealing and capping practices.

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous, quantified feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool in evaluating the success of ground preparation practices. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile d&ability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since the shovel must physically interact which every cubic yard of blast fragmentation.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

The objective of this program was the development, design, fabrication, and laboratory testing of a mine-worthy continuous respirable dust monitoring system (CRDMS). The operation of the sensor unit of this system is based on the light scattering intensity of the respirable fraction of airborne dust. The CRDMS is compatible with the typical environmental rigors that characterize coal mines and, in particular, the shock, vibration, impact, moisture and dust conditions prevailing at active training machines. The sampled area must be within the breathing zone of the mining machine's operator, whose dust exposure is to be monitored by the CRDMS sensor unit. Instantaneous, as well as shift-averaged dust concentrations, are displayed and recorded for later retrieval, Alarm indications and other diagnostic information are provided. The project was completed with the delivery of three sensor/display units (SDU), one data retrieval unit (DRU), two mining-machine-compatible power supplies, and two [auxilliary] battery packs.

This report presents the data of one of a series of investigations of the washability of Alabama coals as indicated by float-and-sink tests made by the Bureau of Mines at the Southern Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers The Klondyke mine, operated by the Blocton Mining Co., is about 1 mile east of West Blocton, Bibb County, Ala., near the southwestern extremity of the Cahaba coal field. The Bureau of Mines already has published three reports that deal with the washability of Cahaba coals - one a washability study of the Clark bed at Marvel4/, one on the tabling of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock bed , and the third a washablility study of the Henry Ellen bed at Acmar6/.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary deposits, which include tailings streams and tailings dams, are higher than most countries’ primary deposits. In addition, these secondary deposits have already been mined and processed, meaning that the recovery of high-grade product requires low capital and operating costs.The most widely used process for the recovery of these valuable fine and ultra-fine hematite iron particles is the wet high-intensity magnetic separation technique, originally developed by Dr Jones over 55 years ago. Many of the original machines are still working today.The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities in terms of grade and yield of using sophisticated magnetic separation modules. All results and figures are obtained from test work and design and engineering work with material from the Pilbara. In addition, consideration is given to dewatering of iron ore product and tailings.Two types of tailings have been identified for processing. Firstly, tailings that have already been deposited in a tailings storage facility, and secondly, live tailings streams from an existing wet iron ore beneficiation plant. In both cases, the technical and practical results are shown along with relevant flow sheets and plant layouts. Finally, this paper highlights the total predicted power and water consumption, capital requirements and projected operating expenses.The results show that the operating costs are significantly lower than the mining and processing operations that are required for an equivalent amount of iron ore. The recovery of iron depends on various factors but is within the 30–50 per cent range at an equivalent grade to the mainstream product. Another significant benefit is that the magnetic separation process is water positive, meaning that water is released rather than added in the process.The processing of the Pilbara’s secondary deposits will therefore result in an overall reduction in operating costs, an increase in product yield from a plant, extend the life-of-mine and offer environmental benefits by reducing the tailings footprint and water usage.The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary iron ore deposits and tailings are such that many other countries would judge these as equivalent to primary deposits. Definite progress has been made in accident prevention in Illinois during the past few years; the State Department of Mines and Minerals is receiving excellent cooperation from coal companies and employees, the companies are making greater effort to maintain their mines in good condi- tion, and the employees are eliminating more unsafe practices. As a result, some coal companies have made commendable safety records that prove that coal can be mined with a comparatively low accident rate. However, there is need for further improvement, as the accident rate of the State as a whole is much higher than it should be. During the 55-year period 1882-1936, in- clusive, reports of the State Department of Mines and Minerals show a total of 7,005 (an average of 127.36 per year) men killed in and around the coal mines. Of this number, 6,425 (91.7 percent) were killed underground, 346 (4.9 percent) in the shaft, and 234 (3.3 percent) on the surface. Of the fatalities underground, 3,300 (51.3 percent) were killed by falls of roof, sides, or face coal, 1,167 (18.1 percent) by haulage, 639 (9.9 percent) by handling explosives, 579 (9 percent) by explosions, 151 (2.3 percent) by electricity, and 589 (9.1 percent) by other means. Of the fatalities in the shaft, 171 men (46.5 percent) were killed by falling down the shaft, 14 (41.6 percent) by the cage, and 31 (8.9 percent) otherwise. On the surface, 113 (48.2 percent) of the fatalities were due to railroad cars, 51 (21.7 percent) to machinery, and 70 (29.9 percent) to other causes. The fact that 7,005 lives (an average of 127.36 per year) were lost during 1882-1936 is sufficient evidence that in the past too little interest has been taken in safety by either the management or workers. A realization of this deplorable loss of life should act as an incentive to the industry to make greater effort to prevent accidents in the future. After an accident occurs, the facts pertaining to it become history, and anything that may be done afterward cannot change in any way the damage that has already been done, such as loss of life, personal injury, and destruction of property. The main benefit that can be derived from an acci- dent is that suitable procedure may be adopted and some lesson may be learned to aid in preventing a similar accident in the future. All accidents, par- ticularly serious ones, therefore should be investigated and an effort made

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken investigations to examine selected deposits of beryllium throughout the United States. The beryllium deposit about 6 miles southeast of Lone Pine in the Owens Valley region of Inyo County, Calif., was among those selected for study. In 1960, field work was conducted on the Inyo Beryl claim to determine the extent and character of the beryl-bearing deposit. This report describes the work that was done. In the area investigated, the beryl occurs disseminated in granite and limestone and as stringers. Apparently, the stringers are related to nearby pegmatite dikes, inasmuch as some appear to contain fine-Grained pegmatite. Granitic rocks enclose most of the stringers, which occur as fracture fillings, ranging from thin seams to 4 inches in thickness. The stringers are of muscovite, quartz, albite, and beryl. Some also include epidote and fluorite. For the most part, they are widely spaced. Therefore, mining of substantial tonnages averaging better than 0.2 percent beryl does not appear feasible.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.
