Continued development of an especially impregnated silica gel capable of reversible chemical detection of carbon monoxide (CO) was reported. The affects of changes in mine-related ambient conditions on the detection catalyst's response were explored. Temperature, humidity, and several interfering gases were found to affect the detection catalyst. The interferents include hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, acetylene (and methylacetylene), and ammonia. High humidity decreased the detection catalyst's sensitivity to carbon monoxide for some formulations. Increasing temperature generally decreased the reaction time of the detection catalyst with carbon monoxide. Badges and carriers for the visual presentation of the detection catalyst were constructed. Several variations of these devices included provisions for absorbants and filtering agents which help protect the detection catalyst from gaseous interferents. A variety of catalyst support agents were tested in an effort to find the most suitable. Included were alumina, magnesium oxide, magnesium silicate, and several forms of silica gel. In addi tion to free-flowing forms of these sorbents, thin layer chromatography plates coated with cellulose, alumina, and silica gel and newly developed PTFE entrained silica gels were examined. A limited physical, chemical, and mechanistic characterization of the detection catalyst and the materials used to prepare it has been carried out. Metal component ratio studies, spectral, analytical, pH, and rate measurements were done.

The Eurocode 7 "Geotechnical Design" is based on "Limit State Design", tackling the uncertainties as much as possible at their source through: - selection of characteristic values of variables (loads, soil properties, pile resistance,...); - partial factors applied on the characteristic values; - model factors to account explicitly for uncertainties of the calculation rule if necessary. Eurocode 7 will propose three "design approaches". The selection of one of them will be by National Determination. For pile design, the approaches are: - approach 1 is a "material factoring approach" at load side and a "resistance factoring approach" at resistance side. The structural and geotechnical design are checked for both of two separate sets of partial factors. - approach 2 is a "load and resistance factoring approach" and is in several aspects close to a deterministic approach. The design is checked for one set of partial factors. - approach 3 is a material factoring approach, at load as well as at resistance side. The design is checked for one set of factors. The aim of this paper is to introduce to the design of pile foundations based on pile load tests and on ground test results (semi-empirical and analytical methods) in the frame-work of the three design approaches. Detailed attention is devoted to: - the selection of the characteristic value of the pile resistance, accounting for spatial variability and stiffness of the structure; - the reliability of the prediction of the pile resistance using analytical or semi-empirical methods which may be accounted for through a "model factor". The results of a large test campaign on screw piles in OC Clay and a calculation example illustrate the proposed procedure when calculation rules using CPT results are used.

The Brisbane Airport Link Project (AirportlinkM7) includes the design and construction of more than 12.5 km of tunnels, with the Kedron interchange including four ramp tunnels that intersect with mainline tunnels and result in caverns with spans of up to 26 m. These caverns are in highly variable ground conditions with less than 35 m of cover underlying residential neighbourhoods and commercial properties. The Kedron caverns were constructed using the sequential excavation method (SEM). Owing to complex geometry and excavation sequence, the caverns were designed based on numerical modelling methods, including both two- and three-dimensional models. These numerical methods were used to develop a suite of support types with excavation sequences for the expected range of ground conditions. A combination of methods that included in-tunnel monitoring (convergence monitoring and extensometers), probe holes, endoscope probes, face mapping and ground settlement measurements were used to verify performance of the tunnel support systems and to select and refine the appropriate support system for each section of the caverns. The construction monitoring data indicated that numerical modelling can provide a good basis for predicting the performance of large-span underground openings in highly variable ground conditions. To determine the availability of aluminum from world bauxite resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated 139 bauxite deposits worldwide and evaluated the potential production of aluminum based on the demonstrated resources of bauxite ore from 91 mines and deposits in 22 market economy countries. The demonstrated resources of the bauxite mines and deposits included in this study represent an in situ resource of 20.2 billion metric tons of bauxite. Total identified bauxite resources in market economy countries amount to roughly 31.9 billion tons. Of the demonstrated resource, some 18.8 billion tons of bauxite considered minable provide a production potential of 3.6 billion tons of primary aluminum. Given the wide geographic distribution of bauxite deposits, stable supplies of bauxite for aluminum production seem assured well into the next century. However, a tight market situation could develop during the 1990's unless the real price of aluminum increases enough to stimulate massive new investments in production capacity, particularly in refining and smelting. This study indicates that a real price of at least $0.85 per pound (in January 1980 dollars) would be necessary to stimulate the required investments and provide a sufficient rate of return on invested capital.

Energy Research Corp., under contract to the Bureau of Mines, has developed a new miners' caplamp battery. The new battery is based on nickel-cadmium technology and offers significant improvements in performance with reduced size and weight when compared to the conventional lead-acid battery presently in use. This report describes the design and fabrication of the nickel-cadmium battery, which utilizes a roll-bonded electrode structure. The final battery design has a 15-A-h capacity in a 2-112-lb package, which is over 2 lb lighter than the present lead-acid caplamp battery.

Project Description The Ok Tedi Mine is located approximately 18 km east of the Papua and New Guinea-Indonesia border, on the southernmost extremity of the Star Mountains Range, it is situated almost equidistant from the north and south coastlines. The headwaters of the Fly River system are in the Star Mountains. The open pit mining activities are on Mt Fubilan with a (pre-mining) elevation of 2,095 metres (6,871 Feet) in the Western Province. The mine is in an area characterised by very steep topography and dense tropical rainforest. The pit has been free draining but will cease to be so in the first quarter of 2009. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) required a drainage tunnel to be driven under the mine, if possible before free drainage was no longer possible. The tunnel was required to be at least 5 m in diameter and 4,200 m (13,776 ft) long, with a possible extension of 1,100 m (3,608 Feet) if the mine decided it was required for additional drainage and underground exploration. The tunnel is being driven up grade at 0.67%, and will be connected to the pit by the raising boring of two 1.1 m (3 Ft. 6 In.) diameter shafts from the tunnel level 250 m (820 Feet) below to the pit. In Tabubil, the adjacent township at an elevation of 640 m (2,100 feet), air temperatures range from a mean at night of 20 (68°F) degrees centigrade to a daytime aver-age of 27 (81°F) degrees. Extremes of 12 and 39 (54°F?102°F) degrees centigrade have been recorded. Rain falls, on average, 339 days each year and totals 8,000 mm (315 inches), and have been known to approach 12,000 mm (472 inches) making the area one of the wettest places on earth. The portal site is at an elevation of 1,200 m or 4,000 ft and the air temperatures are a little cooler and the rainfall a little greater. Access to the mine is by air for personnel and light freight and by ship for heavier goods and materials. The port is at Kiunga on the Fly River 153 km from the portal site. The program for the project was tight, the decision to purchase the required TBM was made in July 2007 and the final decision to go ahead with the construction of the tunnel was made in November 2007.

SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The factors investi­gated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use, and wind effects on cab particulate penetration. Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter use were the two most influential factors on cab penetration performance. Use of the recirculation filter reduced cab penetration by usually an order of magnitude over the intake air filter alone because of the multi­plicative filtration of the cab interior air. Intake air leakage and filter loading affected the cab penetration to a lesser extent, while wind had the least impact on cab penetration between the calm and 10-mph wind velocities tested. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure with only minor changes to cab penetration. A mathematical model was developed that describes cab penetration in terms of intake filter efficiency, intake air quantity, intake air leakage, recirculation filter efficiency, recirculation filter quantity, and wind penetration.

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. In this study by the Federal Bureau of Mines Pennsylvania anthracite from the Eastern Middle field was oxidized by concentrated nitric acid at steam-bath temperature for 24 to 1,000 hours. The quantitative data obtained include yields of nitric-acid soluble and insoluble products and the distribution of carbon and ash in each. The acid-insoluble residues were examined for solubility in aqueous sodium hydroxide. With a sodium hydroxide concentration of at least 1 normal, a portion of the residue could be extracted in the form of a true solution. With lower alkali concentrations, peptization occurred. Alkali solubility of the residue increased with length of oxidation. However, when expressed in percentages of original coal weight, the alkali solubility remained essentially constant after 192 hours of oxidation. This suggests that the alkali-soluble products are converted to acid-soluble products at the same rate as the original coal substance is converted to alkali-soluble material. Microscopic observations of the peptization of the acid-insoluble residues revealed a gross micellar physical structure. The action of nitric acid is apparently not restricted to the surface of a coal particle. The acid penetrates the particle through the pore structure, dissolving some of the ash and altering the bonds between the coal micelles. The bond alteration, as indicated by ultimate analyses, involves the physical and chemical adsorption of the components of nitric acid. Some of the altered bonds are not thermally stable; this instability is shown by the complete loss of peptizing ability when the acid-insoluble products are heated above 200° C. This loss is accompanied by the evolution of water, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocyanic acid.

This reflects the current concern about damage inflicted on the environment by our growing and increasingly affluent society. Mine Health and Safety research, along with investigations related to all other aspects of coal extraction and use, also continued to be implemented and expanded.

The purpose of the project was to optimize load haul dump (LHD) machinery use as they were spending too much time doing what they should not be doing. During the investigation, the author found that the machine's actual availability was 86% and the utilization ranged between 30% and 42%. This shows that the availability of the machine has met its target. Therefore the main problem was with the LHD utilization and that is what the project focuses on. To satisfy the objectives, the author firstly studied the existing mining data like the key performance indicators (KPIs) in order to analyse the machine's availability and utilization; this is what gave direction to the problem. Secondly the author did a literature review on mines with similar problems. This gave the author ideas on what to look at in approaching such a situation. Thirdly, the author gathered information on what the LHDs are doing on a daily basis by doing a time study. This gave the author an idea of how long it took the LHDs to complete a specific task. The author also interviewed operators and their supervisors in order to find the best practice work. This helped in identifying the problem areas when comparing the best practice work with what the LHDs are actually doing. According to the project results, it was found that the LHDs are underutilized due to shortage of drivers and the long distances the LHDs have to travel for material loading and refuelling. The author recommended that the machine utilization should be improved by training more operators in order to eliminate the 'no operator' downtime; the cost arrangement of this recommendation is included in the report. The author also recommended that the travelling time should be reduced by using tractors instead of LHDs when long distances need to be travelled for material loading. Another recommendation for reducing travelling time was to bring the mobile fuel tank closer to a section; the cost arrangement for this recommendation is also included in the report. This report presents a design and cost investigation for several alternative versions of a field-worthy mining machine-mounted respirable dust monitor. Three main design variations are considered: (a) light scattering sensing, (b) Beta-filter tape sensing, and (c) a combination of the two preceeding methods. Eventual instrument production coats as a function of design complexity are tabulated. Cost estimates for the development and field testing of field-worthy prototypes are also presented. A general discussion on the technical aspects of these design alternatives is included following a modular-hierarchical approach of progressive complexity. The technical background to this report has been provided by the experience and results derived from the work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contracts Nos. H0166097 and H0377092.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. Field studies were performed during blasting operations for strip coal mining above the room and pillar workings at Jenny mine in eastern Kentucky. The study is part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop criteria for the proximity of surface blasting to underground mines. Measurements and observations were made to identify physical changes in the mine. No change in the frequency of roof falls or any other indication of apparent damage was noted. Recordings of blast induced vibrations were made using sensors on the roof and floor of the underground mine and at the ground surface. A maximum particle velocity of 17.5 in/sec was recorded on the mine roof. The vibration data were analyzed and comparisons were made between roof vibration levels and those recorded on the mine floor and at the ground surface. Results are compared with previous blast vibration studies. Recommendations are made for further study toward developing criteria.
