The heat balance and chemical equilibria involved in the production of blister copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate in a single operation are examined. It appears that two stages—one oxidising and one reducing—will be required. The analysis indicates that on thermal grounds the process is possible with a dry, high-grade chalcopyrite concentrate, if oxygen enrichment to about 30 per cent is used, but that copper losses in the slag will be serious and will require a secondary recovery operation. More extensive data on the activities of copper oxide in slags are required to elucidate this point more effectively

The structural, textural and mineralogical properties of the slate formations of NW Spain make it the most important district in the world for quarrying roofing slates. Over the past 10 years the introduction of new methods has increased yields from 2 to 13%. The main factors affecting quality are quartz grain size less than 75 micrometres, homogeneity of slaty cleavage and S0-S1 intersection angle, very low metamorphic grade, absence of secondary foliation, beds 10-12 m thick and low content of oxidisable Fe sulphides. The two main controls on fissility are lithology and deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The minimum natural block size should be 0.6 m3 but this volume can be reduced for modern cutting tools such as diamond wire, chain and circular saws. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, coke, smelting charge, optimization, ferrochrome The main consumer of ferrochrome is stainless steel production. Stainless steel must maintain a reasonable price against other competitive materials. Therefore, the ferrochrome price must be low enough and profitable for the producers of stainless steel. The investment and operational costs of ferrochrome production are greatly dependent on the availability of the process and the production rate. Thus the furnace size and production rate in submerged electric arc furnaces will be greatly increased in the near future. The ferrochrome production per furnace, e.g. at Outokumpu?s Tornio Works, increased from 30 000 t/a to 165 000 t/a in about 35 years. The same trend will continue globally but now much more quickly. The Outokumpu ferrochrome process at Tornio Works uses sintered chromite pellets and upgraded lumpy ore as a chromite source. Metallurgical coke is used as a reductant. Reliable smelting in a large furnace demands the correct charge composition and well-known characteristics of the charge components. The quality and electrical conductivity of cokes (normally used) has the most important role for the electrical conductivity of the smelting charge. The results of the measured electrical conductivity of different cokes and the smelting charge with many controlling factors are presented here. These measurements were performed over the years for our own purposes at the laboratory of Outokumpu Research Oy (ORC), in Pori, Finland.

High-speed TBM excavation requires rapid ground assessment ahead of excavation, particularly in complex grounds. The Tunnel Reflector Tracing technology (TRT) developed by authors, uses seismic reflections to produce volumetric images of ground anomalies. To further minimize interruption in the TBM excavation the authors modified surveying technique switching from cable (wired) to radio (wireless) data acquisition system. This paper presents the outline of the Wireless TRT system, and compares the results for the wired and the wireless surveys. The comparison shows that the wireless system offers high precision data, is more efficient and economical and significantly less intrusive in tunneling operations.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. J0100038, "Demonstration of Noise Control Techniques for the Crushing and Screening of Nonmetallic Minerals." The objectives of the program were to: a. Identify the prevalent sources of crushing and screening noise in portable and stationary plants b. Design retrofit noise control treatments for those sources c. Field test control treatments under actual operating conditions. A census of the nonmetallic industry was performed to determine the number and types of crushing and screening equipment. Based on the census, eight plants were selected and surveyed to assess the variety of noise sources, determine the worker noise exposure to those sources, and to identify possible constraints that had to be considered in designing and installing the retrofit controls. Three plants were selected from those surveyed and retrofit noise control treatments were designed, including: a. A primary crusher operator control booth b. Screen decks made of resilient cloth c. Screen feedbox impact pads d. Rubber feed plate for secondary crusher e. Rubber feed chute linings for secondary crusher f. Noise attenuating curtain for secondary crusher. A new primary crusher control booth was installed at one plant, and the operator noise levels were reduced from 97 dBA to 78 dBA. Screen noise at the two secondary crushing plants was reduced by 3 dBA to 7 dBA; crusher noise was reduced by 5 dBA at one of these two plants. Noise levels at normal outside operator and cleanup locations were reduced by 4 dBA to 7 dBA at one secondary plant, but operator/cleanup noise levels were not significantly reduced in the second plant due to rapid wear of installed materials. At one of the two secondary plants the retrofit noise control materials displayed excellent wear characteristics. The rapid wear of retrofit materials at the second plant was due to improper materials being supplied and changing circuit conditions.

This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, "Improving Man Transit Safety". This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements were embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery-powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle is presented in Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.

Mountaintop removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly 30 years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches in whole and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. MTR is highly efficient, even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in a real extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impact on the surrounding area. During the past two years, however, the debate over MTR mining has grown quickly and has become very intense. This article describes chronologically issues raised by various parties, legal actions, impacts on mining permit applications and research projects developed to address the issues.

Thermodynamics data for silicates have applications in the fields of extractive metallurgy, ceramics, and geochemistry. To facilitate these applications, up-to-date tables of heats and free energies of formation are needed. It is the purpose of this report to supply such tables for anhydrous silicates. During the last 15 years the heats of formation of a substantial number of anhydrous silicates have been reliably determined at or near room temperature. This resulted from the development (first by the Bureau of Mines and later by the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, by the Institute of Geology of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and by the Department of Geology of the University of Chicago) of accurate solution calorimeters, employing hydrofluoric acid as the reaction medium. Specific references to work of these laboratories will be made in the next section of this report. Also, entropy data at 298.150 K. and high-temperature heat-content values are available for many of these silicates, mainly owing to work of the Bureau of Mines. Most of these entropy and heat-content data have been compiled in Bureau of Mines Bulletins (13, 15).3

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.

"Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract H0292025. The purpose of this project was to prove the feasibility of detecting hazards in a coal seam using a synthetic pulse radar. This work was conducted in three phases. The first was an analysis of the types of errors which might cause problems. The second was to build a breadboard radar and the third phase was to conduct a field test with the system. The work from each phase is discussed and the results of the field tests are presented. These results show propagation of the radar signal through 200 feet of coal along with reflections from 50 feet away. The final section contains recommendations for future development.

There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.5 and 3 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year product Lon period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 Indexes. Initial capital investment is $33.8 million for the 1.5-MM-tpy mine and $61 million for the 3-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $52.5 and $94.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $34.87 and $31.31 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $12.06 and $10.94 per ton for the 1.5- and 3-MM-tpy mines.

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of pre concentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal subsystems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry. The suitability of different ore types for pre-concentration using anyone of the variety of ore sorting systems can be quickly established using computer based techniques which require only small samples of the materials under investigation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Particulate Mineralogy Unit examined the habits of six zeolite minerals commonly occurring in domestic zeolite deposits. Mineral habit is of interest because current theory on the potential for sarcoma production in test animals emphasizes the size and shape of mineral particles, without regard to composition or structure. A scanning electron microscopic study revealed that, of these six minerals, only mordenite and erionite crystallized in acicular to fibrous habits, The fibrous varieties of these two minerals were characterized by size and shape on the transmission electron microscope, and their dimensions were compared with those of asbestos and amphibole cleavage fragments. When comminuted, these two minerals possess "fibrosity indices" similar to those of amphibole cleavage fragments. One sample, a rare woolly erionite, has uniform widths, large aspect ratios, and a "fibrosity index" similar to those of asbestos.

A mobile vacuum sweeper to remove loose coal and coal dust from underground coal mine workings was designed, built, tested, and evaluated. The design was based on an extensive test program. Pick up and conveying rates vs. air volumes, velocities, and nozzle shapes were determined for coal rubble in a laboratory pneumatic handling system. A gas/solids separation system was developed and tested in the laboratory capable of separating the solids loading from the vacuum system air stream to the very high degree required to preclude degradation of the ambient (mine) air. Two designs were made, one for belt conveyor and one for general district cleanup. The belt cleanup machine was chosen for test and demonstrated in an underground coal mine performing cleanup work in belt haulageways and on ribs.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. A thermal imaging borehole probe was designed and fabricated for the purpose of obtaining thermal images, through smoke, of objects and people in underground mines. The effort was basically unsuccessful; electrical noise, and possibly thermal noise, interferred with the desired signals to the extent that spatial resolution in the images was unacceptable.
