Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. O processo de soldagem de pontos por resistência elétrica é uma técnica econômica e adequada para a união de chapas, pela alta velocidade e adaptabilidade, torna-se um método amplamente difundido para a produção em massa. É utilizado principalmente em carrocerias de automóveis por apresentar elevada eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo analisa as diferenças apresentadas nas microestruturas de pontos de solda produzidos através do controle da refrigeração do eletrodo. Para garantir a qualidade de uma junta soldada e aumentar a vida útil do eletrodo é importante que os parâmetros empregados na soldagem sejam bem ajustados, para que o ponto de solda também apresente características que irão garantir uma boa performance do produto final. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer a comparação da qualidade dos pontos de solda produzidos, além de avaliar a estrutura formada em diferentes temperaturas do eletrodo no momento da soldagem.

The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

The location and shape of potential failure surfaces in soil slopes were directly determined based on the stresses induced in the soil mass and the strength of the soil itself. Stress calculations were carried out by the finite element method with the Drucker-Prager nonlinear material model. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and Mohr's circle stress analysis were then applied to the calculated stresses to determine the characteristics of the failure surface.

It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate anyone method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

Variações no tratamento termomecânico influenciam as propriedades dos metais e suas ligas. Em particular, na obtenção de chapas metálicas, a quantidade de passes de laminação e o grau de redução de cada etapa (caminho de laminação) influenciam na formação do estado deformado do material. Este estado, em conjunto com as condições de recozimento, determinará as propriedades finais do material. Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a influência do caminho de laminação no tamanho de grão final de dois materiais de diferentes energias de falha de empilhamento (EFE): cobre UNS C11000 e latão UNS C26000. As propriedades mecânicas das ligas escolhidas são em grande parte determinadas pelo tamanho de grão médio, que podem proporcionar aos materiais boa resistência mecânica aliada à boa ductilidade, condições desejadas em aplicações de estampagem. O estudo foi conduzido impondo uma redução total de 62% nas chapas utilizando-se duas condições diferentes: quatro e seis passes de laminação. O recozimento foi comum para os dois casos e resultou em uma diferença significativa (6 ?m) entre os tamanhos de grão médios das amostras de latão, enquanto o mesmo não foi observado para o cobre. A distribuição obtida de tamanho de grão foi lognormal para todas as amostras, à exceção do latão laminado com quatro passes. Os resultados foram analisados qualitativamente à luz da estrutura dos materiais no estado encruado.

This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

This report provides concepts for two automated longwall mining systems; one for operation in a 42 to 57-inch thick section of the Lower Kittanning coal seam, the other in a 57 to 72-inch thick section of the Pittsburgh seam. The Lower Kittanning concept uses a single-drum bidirectional shearer and 500-ton capacity 4-leg chocks and the Pittsburgh concept uses a double-drum shearer with 500-ton shields. Each concept is designed to produce in excess of 2,500 tons of clean coal per shift with a 6-man face crew. The automated longwalls consist of off-the-shelf control system hardware attached to standard longwall equipment. Control hardware includes a control and display console; prime and backup mini-computers; multiplex data transmission, power, and control lines; several remote terminals which serve as interface junctions; and various sensors and actuators located on the longwall equipment. The system can be operated either fully automatically, remotely or manually.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a influência dos diversos aglomerantes nas propiedades mecânicas e no processo de redu?ão das pelotas auto-redutoras de cromita com o objetivo de obter uma boa resistência mecânica a quente, medidas após serem submetidas às temperaturas de 1173, 1273, 1373, 1473 e 1573K. Os aglomerantes ensaiados foram: bentonita, cal hidratada, melaço, carboxi-metil-celulose (CMC) e silicato de sódio. Inicialmente os materiais (cromita, ferro-silício, coque de petróleo e aglomerantes), foram caracterizados por análise química e granulométrica. Após isto, os materiais, foram aglomerados na forma de pelotas (P1 a P15), contendo teores variáveis de aglomerantes. Após a fabricação das pelotas, procedeu-se aos ensaios de laboratório; medindo-se a resistência a compressão da pelota verde, ao longo do tempo (por 28 dias), da pelota seca e após os ensaios de ciclos térmicos. Foram realizados também ensaios de crepitação e avaliação da redução à temperatura de 1773K. Após os ensaios ciclos térmicos e de redução, os produtos obtidos (escória e metal) foram analisados por MEV e EDS. A pelota P15 (4% de silicato de sódio como aglomerante) apresentou uma resistência a compressão, de pelota seca, de 5 kg-f/pelota, e após tratamento térmico às temperaturas de 1173 e 1273K, apresentou uma resistência a compressão de 15 e 15,5 kg-f/pelota, respectivamente. Nenhuma das pelotas ensaiadas apresentaram crepitação. A pelota P15 atingiu fração de reação unitária aos 10 minutos, a 1773K. Verificou-se também para estas condições a formação de escória, aos 3,5 minutos, prejudicando a reação CO/cromita.

In the process of pillar extraction, pillars are seldom if ever extracted completely. The pillar remnants, or snooks, play an important role in the extraction process. At the working face, they need to be stable to provide a measure of support in the immediate area. Further back, they have to fail in a controlled manner to prevent undue load build-up on the pillars that have not yet been extracted. The stability condition at the working area is the result of interaction between the stability of the pillar and that of the roof rock. It is shown that the primary mode of roof layer failure is by bending induced tension. Direct tension can be excluded in most practical conditions, and only in exceptional cases will the first failure be in shear mode. Panel spans required to cause the first goaf to be formed, predicted using analytical considerations, are of the same order as has been observed in practice. Once the first goaf has formed, the horizontal stress is reduced and failure will occur at more frequent intervals. It is shown that bending induced tension is the most likely mode of failure in an unjointed roof layer. In roof layers with a high frequency of weak or uncemented jointing, failure can be expected to occur at spans equal to the joint spacing. In this context, failure will occur at the smallest of the spans required to induce tensile roof failure and the joint spacing. A fundamental procedure to evaluate the likely roof layer failure in a stacked beam system is developed. This can to be used to estimate the loading condition on snooks. It is shown that snooks assist in stabilizing the immediate roof beam. The sizes and positions of the snooks relative to the position of the next pillar to be stooped, control the magnitude of the contribution to stability. The further the snook is from the next pillar, and the larger it is, the greater the contribution to the stability of the immediate roof. Under the condition of loading by the immediate, continuous roof beam, the position and size of a single snook controls the load acting on it. The closer it is to the nearest solid, provided that the roof overhang extends beyond the snook, the greater the load on it. However, once the immediate roof beam fails, the loading conditions change. The snook is then loaded by the tributary area load. A procedure is developed to assess the condition of snooks for different situations. Using the fundamental considerations developed in this paper, snooks can be designed to be stable during the active mining phase in their immediate vicinity, but to fail once the next line of pillars has been extracted.

Traditional practice to resist large lateral loads on foundations is the use of large diameter caissons, battered driven piles, or battered micropiles. Dense urban construction environments, however, limit the usefulness of these systems due to the close proximity of below- and above-grade obstructions. This paper presents two micropile construction projects in the United States where a complex scheme of battered micropiles and grade beams was developed to counteract large lateral loads at the foundation level. The paper also presents a procedure used to design vertical micropiles for large lateral loads, which can greatly simplify the design of foundations subject to significant lateral loads in urban environments. A design example shows a case where vertical micropiles were used to support allowable design lateral loads greater than 80 kip per micropile.

Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. "Mining environments, whether open-pit or underground, pose difficult conditions for any sensor system. However, the ever-increasing need for automation requires the application and use of sensor systems in order to gather relevant information required for process automation. Ultra-Wideband radio (UWB) is a robust technology well-suited for underground applications. These applications include positioning and communication. This paper introduces UWB and presents results from measurement campaigns in harsh environments. Using filtering and sensor fusion precise and robust positioning can be achieved even in confinements of underground mining environments. INTRODUCTION Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining ever more importance. Especially in light of ongoing efforts to reach the goals of what was coined as Industry 4.0 by the German government, the development of IPS is inevitable. According to a recent report about the “Global Indoor Location Market Outlook 2019” a growth from $ 597 million in 2014 to $ 3961.8 million by 2019 is expected [1]. Hence, there is also an economic incentive to pursue this topic. The mining industry is profiting from this development as well, since IPS are the basis for the automation of especially mobile mining equipment. Ideally, indoor positioning systems offer to position the equipment continuously and, what’s more, even in real-time [2]. Different approaches are available for IPS. The difference of these systems lie in terms of accuracy, cost, precision, technology, scalability, robustness and security. [3] At the Institute of Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) of RWTH Aachen University, research suggests that one of the more auspicious approaches for IPS in the mining sector is the employment of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology. Because of this, there has been ongoing research into the best way to introduce UWB technology for the application in underground environments. The research started with an indoor positioning application, which only consisted of the UWB system. In the course of this, different algorithms were developed to enhance the system’s performance for the use in the mining industry. This led to the idea of sensor fusion in which the information of the UWB system are combined with infrastructure-independent technologies like inertial navigation systems (INS) and image-based technologies."

"INTRODUCTION The future of oil production in the part of the Appalachian region included in southwestern Pennsylvania; West Virginia, and southeastern Ohio is directly dependent on the maintenance of existing wells. This report presents an analytical study of the methods used in oil-well reconditioning in this area. The study is part of a research program designed to evaluate those means of stimulating oil production that can effectively and economically maintain present oil-production rates and make it possible to keep existing wells in operation. Well-reconditioning work was curtailed during the war; therefore, an abnormally large number of wells in the Appalachian Region is now in need of repair. Because the lubricant content of Appalachian crude: oils is high and the refined lubricating oils an; particularly suited to use in high speed, high-temperature engines, the demand for these crude oils during the war exceeds, the maximum rate of production obtainable under wartime operating conditions. Increases in operating, expenses, inability to meet war-time reconditioning costs, and inflexible price structures caused the abandonment of an alarming number of wells during the past 4 or 5 years.As a means of increasing regional oil-production rates, new drilling in the older fields for primary production generally is uneconomical because reservoir pressures in most of the fields have virtually been depleted and the production rates of newly drilled wells are small."
