Underground rock mechanics was initiated as a formal discipline in Australia by early studies for underground structures for the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the 1950s. These techniques were quickly embraced by underground mining and there has been steady development to the present time. The paper reviews the status of current techniques for rock mechanics studies and discusses some important issues such as ground support, mine filling and caving. It concludes that a considerable degree of engineering judgement is still required for the practical application of rock mechanics to underground mine design.

Cannington Mine has been developing through paste backfilled stopes since the year 2000. These paste drives have been used as either production drill accesses or long-term bypasses. Prior to this study, the ground support requirements for each paste development cut were: an initial 50 mm layer of fibrecrete, weld mesh bolted with 2.4 m split sets, followed by a second coat of 50 mm fibrecrete. Both layers of fibrecrete and the layer of mesh were to be installed before the next cut could be bored and fired. This support regime proved successful at Cannington, however, the total cycle time for each cut was lengthy due to the installation and curing times associated with each layer of surface support. In an effort to reduce the cycle time a study was carried out, with the aid of RocScience’s Phase2 numerical modelling software. The modelling reviewed all of the parameters controlling the stability of a newly excavated development cut. The parameters studied included the early strength of fibrecrete, the ground support load capacity, and the strength of the paste fill masses which varies depending on the cement content. As a result of the study, the ground support standard was revised. The revision has significantly decreased the cycle time as well as fibrecrete consumption, all the while maintaining the safety of personnel and equipment.

At present, the friction factor is calculated by measuring pressure drop and airway configurations. However, the workload of on-site measurement is heavy, and the measurement results are easily disturbed by the external environment. In order to meet the need of intelligent ventilation to quickly and accurately obtain the friction resistance of roadway. Based on the important of roughness in Atkinson friction resistance formula, in this paper, fractal theory is used to characterise the 3D rough surface, and a method based on fractal dimension to describe the roughness of roadway surface and calculate the friction resistance was proposed. A computational model of friction resistance for fractal characterisation of roadway 3D rough surface was established. The parameters of the model were deduced and verified by using Nikuradse experimental data. The fractal dimension of roadway surface was calculated by 3D laser scanning data of Kailuan roadway, the established friction resistance calculation method was compared with the field resistance measurement results. It is considered that the calculation method of friction resistance based on fractal theory is reliable and can well represent the influence of 3D rough surface characteristics of roadway. The result show that the new established friction resistance formula compared with the traditional Atkinson formula in Nikuradse experimental, the average relative error is 6.874 per cent, and compared with the measured results of ventilation resistance in Kailuan experimental roadway, the relative error is 6.667 per cent. Comprehensive evaluation and analysis suggest that the new formula can well reflect the influence of 3D rough surface on friction resistance, combined with 3D laser scanning technology, the friction resistance of roadway can be calculated quickly and accurately. This research provided a reference for the key technology and theoretical development of intelligent ventilation parameter measurement.

The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

"The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. "The Gosowong Gold Project is owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM), an Indonesian company 75 per cent owned by Newcrest. It is located on Halmahera Island, in the North Maluku Province of the Republic of Indonesia, approximately 2450 km north-east of the national capital, Jakarta (Newcrest, 2017).Kencana is one of two underground gold and silver mines at the Gosowong Operation where ground conditions vary from competent to very poor. Development headings occurring in poor rock mass conditions require high capacity ground support including long tendon cable bolts. Manual installation of cable bolts in these development headings has been a time consuming process due to borehole collapse, blockages requiring subsequent re-drilling and a minimum eight hour grout curing time interval. The installation of cable bolts including the setting, plating and tensioning can impact the critical path for development heading advance resulting in development cycle delays.A review was conducted by PT NHM on current industry practices for alternatives to manual cable bolting. PT NHM subsequently approached Minova to assist with the development and trialling of self drilling anchors (SDAs) installed using jumbos with a rapid setting pumpable resin, CARBOTHIXTM. A series of system development trials were conducted and a reliable bolting system was developed utilising the existing jumbo drilling fleet with minimal required modifications.The system developed was a ‘one pass’ bolting process to install and grout SDAs using a two component resin with a remote, mechanised system. Improvements achieved from the system include: eliminating hole closure issues and more immediate support in poor rock mass effectively reducing personnel exposure to poor ground conditions by removing the requirement to access the drive backs reducing grout set time with full installation times for 6 m SDAs averaging 25 min.The resin grouting system has now been successfully implemented to effectively manage areas of poor ground conditions and to accelerate advance rates in high priority headings.CITATION:Pateman, D and Sprague, T, 2017. Fortescue Metals Group flagship operation, Cloudbreak, is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is capable of delivering an annualised production rate of 40 Mt/a. Positioned 50 km to the east of Cloudbreak is Fortescue’s Christmas Creek operation, which has a combined processing capacity in excess of 50 Mt/a. Following on from these successes, Fortescue advanced development of its western Pilbara mines at the 60 Mt/a Solomon Hub. These processing installations place Fortescue in a strong position to deliver on a guidance of between 155–160 Mt/a for financial year 2014/2015.As Fortescue enters a phase of asset consolidation and debt repayment over expansion, the business is commanding stronger performance through enhanced plant operating practices and mine site cost reduction initiatives. To this end, the strategic placement of instrumentation is an area being given greater consideration. Access to real-time information pertaining to conveyed materials is of major interest to operators for making timely process control decisions. Fortescue has recognised the importance of accurate and up-to-date process information about their ores and hence, has adopted the use of Scantech’s Geoscan mineral analysers at two of their mines.There are two Geoscans at Cloudbreak; one on the ROM feed conveyor and another on the final product conveyor. These allow the in-feed material grade characteristics to be assessed. Moreover, the final product stream can be monitored to ensure product quality is maintained within acceptable quality tolerances. A third Geoscan is installed at Christmas Creek mine on a conveyor that transfers final products to Stockyards.This paper discusses the use of the Geoscans in these installations, including benefits to Fortescue’s operations, as well as functional considerations such as the impact of maintenance and calibration. "The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. Open access to forecasts of mine geotechnical performance in the form of open databases of model results has been considered risky in the past, with a concern that the results will not be understood or will be misused. However, some modelling techniques allow very high similitude modelling of mine deformation and the results can be presented as deformation, damage and other parameters which are unambiguous and which all engineers can be more easily trained to understand. With some effort, sufficient reliability and quantifications of error are possible to overcome many of the issues.Allowing more members of the planning team to have direct access to forecasts of mine deformation will promote awareness of geotechnical issues and will act as a mechanism for improving mine designs. The models will also be more easily integrated into quality assurance programs, by providing a framework for understanding measurement results.The sufficiency requirements for undertaking simulation aided mining engineering will be presented, included some conclusions about requirements for training, quality standards and software development.

Ground support installation into the face of development headings has become an accepted practice at many Australian hard rock mines. Ground support is installed in the development face to reduce personnel exposure to rockfall while conducting work tasks such as marking up, installing lifter tubes, charging, and face sampling. The ground support system installed in the face is typically friction bolts and mesh. This support system can be effective at reducing rockfall occurrence, but it also increases the cost of development per metre, in terms of capital for the ground support, jumbo and operator capital allocation and the installation time slowing each drill and blast cycle. Other issues associated with meshing and bolting the development face include management of rock bolts and mesh sheets in the fired dirt of every cut, damage to services such as vent duct, geometry issues when installing ground support onto irregular development profiles and operator error. Fibrecrete installation onto the development face for support is an option considered by many mines, but it can be difficult to manage due to the removal of visual indications of misfires and slowing the mining cycle due to the wait time for fibrecrete curing. The use of Thin Spray Liner (TSL) products in underground hard rock mines has been relatively infrequent in the past, mainly due to issues with cost, health and safety, and liner strength. Kanmantoo Mine investigated the use of TSLs for the purpose of development face support, while collecting data on the costs and practicalities associated with their use. Several TSL products were trialled and a preferred TSL product was selected for use as face support. Cost savings, drill and blast cycle timing improvements and other benefits were achieved while meeting the requirement to reduce rockfall risk.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. "Gas management has always been a major concern for the ventilation officer of any gassy mine. With an increase of mining depth and gas content, there is a great demand for the development of in-seam drilling sites where boreholes can be drilled for the pre-drainage of gas prior to longwall operation. The ventilation and gas management in the drilling site therefore becomes a critical component of mine safety. In this study, advanced computational fluid dynamics technology was adopted to investigate the aerodynamics of gas emitting from the drilling site and boreholes during normal drilling and, in the case of a sudden gas inrush, from the borehole. In addition, the impact of different ventilation controls on gas removal in the drilling site was investigated. Modelling results indicate that gas accumulation zones could be formed if the ventilation system fails to deliver sufficient airflow to the drill site, especially when a sudden gas inrush from a borehole occurs. The configurations of brattice, layout of ventilation tubes and the gas emission rate all have a significant effect on the gas distribution. Due to variations in site-specific conditions, it would be desirable to conduct modelling studies to assess the effects and efficiencies of a ventilation design for the varying environment on-site before carrying out drilling practice. A ground support system is a combination of individual reinforcement and surface support elements that work together to retain and contain the rock mass. The various elements are subjected to external loads and to interactive loading between individual ground support system components. This paper focuses on the challenges in determining the capacity and behaviour of mesh, recognizing that installed mesh can be subjected to several loading mechanisms. Field observations from underground hard rock mines demonstrate that there are multiple types of damage and modes of failure of mesh. However, these are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory environment. A critical review has shown that existing mesh laboratory testing rigs reproduce very limited loading conditions that may not be representative of underground conditions. The last decade has seen a major increase in use of the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach applied to cave mining problems, often integrated within more complex geomechanical simulations. Because the value of the DFN model directly depends on the quality and quantity of available field data, there is the need to apply dedicated mapping procedures to collect sufficient structural data at the required engineering scale. This paper attempts to address several key questions about DFN modelling; for example: are current methods for fracture mapping suitable for DFN modelling? What are the critical parameters that we need to measure and what do we need to change in the current practice? Particularly at the earlier stages of a cave project, engineers may have to account for the lack of appropriate data, which manifests itself in the form of increased uncertainty and the difficulty to characterise variability in an objective manner using a limited set of data. DFN models could in principle be generated using limited data by assuming statistical distributions for the sampled parameters; however, engineers would need to be aware of the implications that such limited knowledge (and increased uncertainty) would have on stability analysis, fragmentation analysis and mine design. This paper was prepared and translated from the final report of the investigation into the Codelco Chile Salvador DivisionÆs air blast which occurred in the Inca-West area. In this section of the block cave mine, a stable arch formed covering an area of approximately 15 000 m2 . This zone subsequently collapsed producing a massive air blast. The collapse followed a series of planned extraction activities and occurred on 5 December 1999. This paper discusses the cave back arching event and the measures that were taken in order to induce the controlled collapse. This was to minimise risk to personnel, equipment and installations. The results obtained to date are presented.

Mining is still a significant economic activity within the Hauraki District. The Martha project is particularly significant. Estimates are that in the order of 850 direct and indirect jobs are derived as a consequence of the Martha project within the Waikato Region. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) is New Zealand's primary piece of environmental legislation. It sets out to provide the framework for the control of the use, development and protection of almost all physical and natural resources. Minerals are excluded from the sustainability requirements of the legislation but as mining invariably involves the use of land, all the other elements of RMA apply. The Council's role in dealing with mining changed with the introduction of RMA. It became responsible for administration of those matters that fell within the functions set out in section 31 of the RMA in respect to existing authorisations. Mineral development needed to be considered in the development of the District Plan that the Council is required to prepare. Implementation of the Act has been a challenge for not only local government but for many industries and resource users since it came into force in 1991. There have been, and are, differing views on both the way it is administered and its intent. The Hauraki District Council has been at the forefront of some of the challenges that are a consequence of the Act. Its reactions to these challenges have been consistent. It treats mining in the same why it treats any other industry. At times this approach has not been understood and without challenge from sections of the community.

This paper proposes a new multiresource multistage scheduling problem for optimising the open pit drilling, blasting and excavating operations under equipment capacity constraints. The flow process is analysed based on the real-life data from an Australian iron ore mine site. The objective of the model is to maximise the throughput and minimise the total idle times of equipment at each stage. The following comprehensive mining attributes and constraints have been considered: types of equipment; operating capacities of equipment; ready times of equipment; speeds of equipment; block-sequence-dependent movement times of equipment; equipment-assignment-dependent operation times of blocks; distances between each pair of blocks; due windows of blocks; material properties of blocks; swell factors of blocks; and slope requirements of blocks. It is formulated by mixed integer programming and solved by ILOG-CPLEX optimiser. The proposed model is validated with extensive computational experiments to improve mine production efficiency at the operational level. The model also provides an intelligent decision support tool to account for the availability and usage of equipment units for drilling, blasting and excavating stages.CITATION:Kozan, E and Liu, S Q, 2014. "Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Open pit mining at Bingham Canyon commenced in 1904 and about two billion tonnes of ore have been extracted since then. There remain just under one billion tonnes of ore in the pit and this will be mined by 2015. Because the porphyry system extends below the ultimate pit limits, Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation initiated a study in 1997 to determine the viability of underground mining. The study was initiated at that time because the results were to be used to compare the economics of a further pit expansion to that of an underground mine. If a pit expansion was viable then overburden removal would have to start in the near future. This paper is a summary of the work that was carried out for the underground study. Block cave mining was determined to be the most appropriate method to mine the deposit. Two block cave areas have been planned with a total production rate of 72 500 tpd. Additional sources of ore will come from skarn orebodies that are associated with the porphyry deposit. The geology of the deposits is described together with the geotechnical techniques that were used to characterise the rock in the absence of more detailed data that are normally available. A general description of the mine plan is given along with the reasons for selecting the particular methodology used. The study was completed at the end of 1998 and demonstrated the viability of underground mining at Bingham Canyon.
