"The area encompassed by this report is the eastern and northern Cordillera, shown on the composite map accompanying these background papers. It extends from the 49th pm•allel to the Arctic Ocean and from the Rocky Mountain and Tintina trenches to the Interior Plains. The Mackenzie delta is included in the discussions because of the implications of the bedrock geology of the Arctic Plateau and Coastal Plain on the hydrocarbon and mineral potential beneath it.The eastern and northern Cordillera forms the back-bone of the Western Canada sedimentary basin and from it most of the principles of orogenesis and epeirogenesis relating to the understanding of the structural, depositional and fossil record of the basin have been derived. It may be divided roughly into two parts, reflecting basic differences not only in structural style but also in mineral potential. The more easterly and younger rocks generally contain hydro-carbons, coal and non-metallic minerals; the more westerly and older rocks contain metallic and industrial minerals."

MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States in 1939 showed considerable improvement over 1938. For the first eight months of the year production of magnetite proceeded at a normal rate but operations were stepped up in the last four months owing to increased domestic demand. In New York, the Republic Steel Corp. operated the Witherbee-Sherman mines at Mineville throughout the year. Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co. operated their low-phosphorus mine at Lyon Mountain for the first seven months, but on Aug. 1, Republic Steel took over this mine -and have since operated it. In Pennsylvania, the Bethlehem Steel Co, operated the Cornwall mine continuously. In New Jersey, Mt. Hops and Scrub Oak were in operation all year. The Washington mine went into production on Nov. 1 and the Richard mine on Dec. 1.

The $2.5 billion EastLink project is a 39 km tollway and includes twin three-lane, 1.5 km long, undrained driven tunnels with cross passages every 120 m. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. The design of the permanent concrete lining and waterproofing system for the EastLink tunnels was both innovative and practical, to meet the demanding environmental and production constraints of AustraliaÆs largest road project. This paper describes several key aspects of the tunnel design and construction, including: design of fully tanked, permanent concrete tunnel linings for the main tunnels and cross passages to withstand 37 m head of water pressure in combination with potential rock loading in the future;optimisation of the tunnel shape to minimise the amount of reinforcement required and the design of special welded mesh which was developed within manufacturing constraints;100 year design life and durability considerations in every aspect and detail of the design including concrete mix design and stray current mitigation;development of a precast invert solution for the main tunnel permanent concrete lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimise risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic;development of prefabricated reinforcement details for the junctions between the main tunnels and the cross passages to enable faster construction and minimise risks to the membrane associated with fixing reinforcement; andincorporating the tunnel drainage sump at the lowest cross passage in the alignment, resulting in deep excavation to satisfy the required storage volumes for drainage.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. Since the early 1990s it has been evident that electricity demand has outstripped investment in generation and transmission. At the same time, concerns were being expressed about the risks associated with the run down of the Maui gas field. It is axiomatic that the necessary investments firstly require a stable and supportive regulatory and fiscal environment, and secondly that such investments have long lead times. A unwillingness by successive Governments to fund the necessary infrastructure, however, lead to the profound restructuring of the electricity with the ultimate objective of transferring the investment risk from Government to the private sector. Successive power crises since 1992 result from a failure to put in place a regulatory framework necessary to provide the environment to allow the private sector to make the needed investments within the necessary timeframe. The electricity sector has now stabilised to the extent that the regulatory risks associated with generation investment have been reduced. This does not mean that risk has been eliminated, however, and both economic and environmental issues will continue to constrain investment in some power proposals particularly those in the South Island and especially any South Island coal or gas thermal proposal. This is firstly because of several very simple economic issues:  1. while the South Island may have significant coal resources it lacks a significant electricity market; 2. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, low cost hydro will price any large-scale South Island thermal out of the market which will restrict any large scale thermal station to a dry year and/or peaking load; 3. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, export capacity on the HVDC link to the North Island is constrained to around 964 MWe (and 482 MWe from North to South in dry years); and 4. construction of any new thermal plant in the northern half of the North Island will price any South Island thermal station out of the market. There are also significant environmental issues associated with the establishment of a large scale thermally based power station in the South Island. Because the South Island lacks any large scale economically proven gas reserves, the environmental constraints considered are those associated with coal production. A coal mine dedicated to power generation will have significant on-site impacts associated, in particular those associated with disposal of opencast overburden and visual impacts. These will, however, be partially offset by the relative remoteness of such sites to population centres. What cannot be offset, however, is the off-site impacts, in particular, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions, water disposal and acid mine drainage.

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

THE design of mine airways receives, in general, very little engineering treatment. To a large extent this is, of course, due to the fact that information upon which to base calculations is seldom available in definite form. In many mines the extent of the workable deposits may not be known at the time an air course is planned, and the length of service is indeterminable. Volume of air required for ventilation may also increase with extension of the life of a property, and natural obstacles, such as heavy ground, often place limitations upon the size of opening that can be maintained. Perhaps a majority of the shafts used in ventilation of metal mines were originally intended as hoisting shafts, and many of the tunnels and cross-cuts similarly used, were also designed as haulage ways or for other operating purposes. Even when a shaft is sunk solely for ventilation, custom usually dictates a size and shape consistent with the type commonly used for ordinary operations, because experience has demonstrated it can be excavated and maintained. In fact it may not be very far wrong to say most ventilation openings were never made with any consideration as to economic design for such use. When an air course is required to pass air between different parts of mine workings under a fixed pressure, the size of opening required for a given volume of flow, is, of course, determined by the resistance factor of the air course. It is then impossible to proportion the opening with reference to economics of power consumption, and this paper is limited to the design of openings where ventilation pressure or power consumption may be varied for economic advantage.

Introduction There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices . •The time value of invested money was not considered to be important under these "stable" prices, and inflation was assumed to be nonexistent in the planned economy. •An overestimation of the value of social and economic factors such as keeping the local population employed and providing the country with strategic minerals biased the economic evaluations of projects. Sequence of exploration Geological exploration in the CIS countries typically includes two major phases: prospecting and exploration. Prospecting consists of the following: •Regional geological studies. •General prospecting. •Prospecting. •Prospect evaluation. Regional geological studies are conducted within large territories and utilize satellite images, deep seismic zoning and other state-of-the-art methods. Geological and geophysical maps on a scale of from 1:200000 to 1:1000000 are developed to help identify regional anomalies and mineral prospective areas. The areas of primary interest are then subjected to general prospecting, beginning with geological mapping of the area at 1:50000 (1:25000) scale. The prospecting phase determines mineral potential based on further geological mapping (mostly 1:10000 scale), surface geophysics and geochemistry. Finally, the most attractive targets are subjected to further detailed evaluation (prospect evaluation) to help identify "possible" projects by means of trenching and wide-spaced drilling. The results of the prospect evaluation are analyzed and conclusions regarding the economical potential of the project are drawn. If the initial-prospecting phase results are positive and the prospect is recognized as economical, it then moves into preliminary exploration, which is followed by detailed exploration. Preliminary exploration determines the feasibility of the project on the basis of limited data. For example, in some underground projects, the initial exploration drilling and tunneling is done at two or three times wider spacing than would be required by the assumed mining method. Detailed exploration focuses on preparing the project for mining development, such as completing drilling and tunneling, particularly in the portion of the ore body to be first mined. During the project's mining phase, further exploration is usually conducted along the flanks of the mineralized structures and deeper sections of the ore body. Finally, during exploitation, it is sometimes necessary to delineate the ore body within the mining-block limits. A comparison between the United States (US) sequence of exploration activities and the CIS system is given in the Table 1. There is no "additional" and "exploitation" exploration shown in the US system, but it is common knowledge that all mineral projects are subjected to "additional" and "exploitation" exploration while being mined. Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

The mining industry is continually seeking out new and better underground mining techniques. One of the most recent-also, perhaps, the most significant-of the new concepts in underground mining is the use of mechanical rock-boring machines. And one of the problems that concerns us all in this matter is the cost of mechanical rock tunneling. To help answer the oft-quoted question "What will it cost me?" the following pages deal with the operating costs of so-called "medium to medium hard rock" boring machines-i.e., those designed to meet the drilling requirements in 8000 psi to 25,000 psi rock. A few machines are capable of drilling hard rock above 25,000 psi, but the economics of mechanical tunneling in rock that hard is limited at the present time. [ ] For mechanical rock tunneling, there are five main cost factors influencing the expense: Capital Investment, Cutters, Labor, Power Requirements, and Maintenance. These factors give us a good basic picture of the cost of excavation, although muck handling, erecting supports, and other costs directly related to conventional tunneling and mechanical boring enter into the final picture.

The Bellavista Gold Deposit lies 75 Kms north west of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, Central America and 3 Kms north east of Miramar, in the Province of Puntarenas. The total road distance from San Jose to the deposit is 120 Kms all paved road except for a 2.5 Km graded, gravel road on the property (Figure 1). Infrastructure services in the Miramar-Puntarenas area are well developed with electrical power distribution, a modern port facility and community services being available. The deposit lies on the south west flank of the Tilaran Mountain Range between an elevation of 550 and 800 meters above sea level. The local topography is steep, originally covered with pre-montaine, tropical wet forest vegetation which has been largely destroyed due to clearing for cattle grazing. The annual rainfall is approximately 2,950 mms, 90% of which occurs between May and October.

IN the last decade one of our oldest and largest non-metallic metallic mineral industries has been the subject of persistent technical research, the results of which are another example of the benefits following the systematic application of scientific principles. The consequent improvement in the technique of phosphate recovery represents the greatest material advance in the industry since the discovery of phosphate in Florida in 1881. Moreover, these successes have stimulated interest and development in numerous other nonmetallic industries. Strange as it may seem, and despite the fact that the phosphate deposits of Giles County, Tennessee, together with those of Polk and Hillsborough Counties, Florida, have yielded more than 50,000,000 long tons in the last twenty years, the mineralogy of phosphates has been given scarcely any space in our technical literature. For many years it was the general consensus that these so-called phosphate rocks represented a physical mixture composed principally of tri-calcium phosphate, together with smaller quantities of calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, iron phosphate, aluminum phosphate and other less important constituents. More recent investigations, however, led to the conclusion that these phosphates really represent a complex mineral in which calcium, iron, aluminum, phosphorus pentoxide, carbon dioxide, and fluorine all form a definite part of the molecule. Colony, after a careful study, utilizing chemical, microscopic, and X-ray diffraction methods, reported that American phosphates consist principally of calcium-carbono-phosphate of the staffalite type.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

In Finland Posiva Oy (Company) is responsible for implementing the final disposal programme for spent nuclear fuel of its owners. Company is preparing for the geological disposal in Olkiluoto crystalline bedrock. Excavation will be executed using drill and blast method. Method unavoidably causes variable excavation damaged zone (EDZ) on tunnel surfaces. The EDZ constitutes a risk for long term safety and therefore good control methodology of the blasting technique is required. The thicker the EDZ, the greater is the likelihood for detrimental transport pathways for ground water to transport radio nuclides, should those be present.
