The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) Purple Line Extension Section 1 (PLE1) is a $3.12 billion USD design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave. and extending 3.92 miles under Wilshire Blvd, terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire and La Cienega Blvds. The project alignment runs immediately adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, world renowned for Pleistocene fossils and continuous seepage of asphaltum (locally known as tar) and gas in an urban setting. This paper presents a successful case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to safely construct the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment (between Wilshire/Fairfax Station, and Wilshire/La Cienega Station), in a designated Methane Zone in the City of Los Angeles. Historical context on decades of challenges and studies is summarized. Further, this paper outlines the pro-active partnership between the Owner: LA Metro, the Design Builder: Skanska-Traylor-Shea Joint Venture, and geotechnical design services provided by Golder Associates to safely manage pressurized face tunneling through a confined gas zone near the La Brea Tar Pits. Specifically, a program of in-situ oxidation and soil gas extraction was designed to test and analyze risks associated with pressurized face TBM tunneling through the complex subsurface geological conditions, then implemented during construction. In advance of tunneling, a network of wells was used to draw air into the gas zone to oxidize the 6,500 ppm hydrogen sulfide gas, as well as determine methane recharge rate. During TBM tunneling, the wells were converted to a gas extraction system to evacuate, filter (H2S) and burn (CH4) the gas as the Tunnel Boring Machine passed, providing a preferential pathway for the gas to migrate toward extraction wells, and preventing the migration to adjacent buildings. The team extracted and treated 3,857,000 cubic feet of mostly methane gas over 40 days as the TBMs passed through the zone. Gas behavior, pressures, and concentrations were monitored not only from the extraction system, but also in basements and utility vaults along this section of the alignment.

A general method-of-lines numerical approach for modeling gas driven fractures has been developed and tested. The numerical solutions agree very well with known similarity solutions for laminar and turbulent flow. Acceptable accuracy is obtained with a very few numerical grid points and with modest execution times. The model has also been checked against the results of several field tests, in which air was used to drive axisymmetric fractures into permeable tunnel-bed tuff.

POISONOUS, irritating, or explosive gases are found in almost every industry, and manufacturers of gas masks are called upon to provide gas mask protection for a great variety of conditions, such as operators in horseradish factories, fumigators of homes and ocean liners, and men engaged in the manufacture of tetra-ethyl-lead, the new motor fuel. The modern type of gas mask and respirator, to provide protection against all such industrial gases, is an outgrowth of the gas mask developed during the World War to protect the soldiers against the poisonous war gases. So far, it has been possible to develop ample mask protection from all known noxious gases and fumes present in atmospheres encountered in mines, metallurgical works, and chemical and other industries, so long as there is sufficient oxygen present to support the flame of an oil lamp. The most important development of the gas mask was in providing protection against carbon monoxide- which is the noxious gas that mining men are most concerned with and, in fact, is the noxious gas that man is most frequently exposed to. This paper will be con- fined largely to the discussion of masks for underground use in metal mines. Gases that contaminate the normal air in mines can be divided into two classes: those that are given off normally by the workings, and those that are produced in mine operation.

Methane gas caused an eight-month shutdown of mining operations at the Mill Creek, Phase 3, Tunnel. The gas-related shutdown occurred as the tunnel was advanced to an approximate distance of 2,700 feet, which constitutes approximately18% of the total tunnel length. The construction of an emergency ventilation shaft, a comprehensive program of de-gassing wells and an expanded gas monitoring system were used to mitigate the gas condition. When complete, this tunnel will be utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from a portion of Cleveland, Ohio and ten suburbs. This paper will provide an overview of gas related remedial measures and explain how these measures were integrated into the project to ensure safe tunneling conditions.

THE installation of the gas-producer power-plant in America has been so unusual that all engineers have viewed it with in¬terest; a large majority, however, regard it with a lack of con-fidence and many with positive distrust. Despite the fact that European engineers have usually been less inclined to take the initiative along experimental lines than are Americans, they have, nevertheless, developed the gas-producer plant to a very high state of efficiency to which they were forced by the neces¬sity of economy in fuel-consumption. The gas-producer power-plant is so common in Europe that engineers as well as the general public regard it with the same degree of confidence that is now universally placed in steam¬plants. Gas-engines, both small and large, are in general use there, and central stations, aggregating several thousand horse¬power, are quite numerous. When the word "gas"' is mentioned in connection with mining almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that the reference is to coal mining. Although methane is likely to occur in any coal mine the metal mines of the world contain by far a greater variety of gases than do the coal mines. Often the gases in metal mines are as dangerous as the gases likely to be found in coal mines, and sometimes are even more deadly. A coal mine is more likely to contain methane than a metal mine. In rare instances it may contain high percentages of nitrogen or carbon dioxide or it may be deficient in oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region. Much more rarely relatively small percentages of ethane or other hydrocarbons with an odor of ether, gasoline, or kerosene, or minute percentages of hydrogen sulphide are found in a coal mine. During a coal-mine fire or explosion carbon monoxide content is likely to be high (4 per cent or more), and if the coal contains much sulphur the high fumes may contain some sulphur dioxide.

The gas producer actually dates back far beyond the period from which we first find recorded data. A partial production of producer gas can take place in any type of solid fuel grate equipment, such as a boiler, or even a fireplace if a sufficiently deep fuel bed is provided. Those of us who have watched a coal fire burning in the hearth, have no doubt noticed at times, the gases liberated by the heat burning on or near the surface of the fuel bed. So far as we know, the first gas producer was built by Bischof in Germany in 1839, followed by Ebelman in France in 1840, and Ekman of Sweden in 1845. The first large industrial development in the use of gas producers was When the two Siemens brothers of Germany patented their first combined gas producer and regenerative furnace in 1861, thus opening up the field for the use of raw, crude producer gas in heavy furnace work. In the years 1879-1881 J, E, Dowson, of England developed a producer gas cooling and cleaning plant, which extended the scope of application of producer gas to make possible its use in small furnaces and gas engines.

Elastomeric compression gaskets for segmental tunnel liners are capable of fulfilling all sealing requirements for one pass constructed tunnels.Once the segments are mounted and the gaskets are compressed the watertightness of the tunnel is guaranteed at once and for the whole technical life time.The only prerequisite for effective sealing is that tolerances in the tunnel segments be kept within reasonable limits.

A sewer tunnel being constructed through an urban commercial area was to pass the site of a former gasoline service station. The site was known to have contained leaking underground storage tanks. An environmental assessment of soils on the alignment was performed, and measures were implemented to handle expected contaminants. Despite these precautions, an explosion occurred in the heading when liquid gasoline was encountered. Four workers were injured. This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the cause of the explosion, and examines how concerted efforts by the parties involved failed to prevent it. The level of guidance provided by OSHA Code provisions for tunneling in gassy conditions is discussed.

Discussion of the paper of O. P. Hood, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2607 to 2611. R. V. Norris, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have had a little experience with gasoline locomotives and I want to indorse very strongly Mr. Hood's point with regard to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I think .the terrible danger is not fully realized. I was foolish enough some time ago, in investigating a gasoline locomotive, to attempt to walk out of the mine entry behind it, and for several days I felt very seriously the carbon monoxide effects. The use of gasoline locomotives ought to be confined to mine entries where there is a very large amount of air. One of the grave dangers is their great convenience and the temptation to run them into chambers for just a few moments to get a car or two. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently one of the great dangers is in the style of the gasoline engine. When my attention was. first directed to the type of gasoline locomotives which I saw in the foreign mines-France, Belgium, and Germany, I was most favorably impressed with them, and they have given no trouble on account of fumes, so far as I could learn. Large numbers of them were being used, but all were of small capacity, and of a kind in which the speed control is by a governor of the hit-or-miss type, the engine running continuously. Their power capacity was very low, if I remember correctly it was not over 4 or 5 h.p., but they were used under favorable conditions where the grades in the mines were slight, since the entries or tunnels bad a slight grade in favor of-the load, making about the same pull for the empties against the grade as for the load with the grade. I understand the hit-or-miss valve arrangement enables a setting that will give more perfect combustion than can be insured with the valve controlled by the operating man, as in the automobile type of valve and engine used in this country. Apparently the European type of locomotive does not have the capacity to permit use under the conditions existing in this country, where most of our entries or tunnels have variable grades and long heavy trips of mine cars are used.

The Gateway program will provide additional rail capacity between New Jersey and Manhattan. This paper describes how a 70-foot-deep section of cut and cover tunnel was designed to directly support future high-rise towers. The tunnel will link previously completed tunnel sections under Hudson Yards to future tunnels under the Hudson River. The design aims to minimize constraints on future overbuild and future tunnels, while maximizing constructability within a small worksite. The tunnel will pass under the High Line elevated walkway, next to an active rail yard, and close to a subway tunnel. The design was developed by a tri-venture of WSP, STV and AECOM. WSP led the design of major underground works; STV designed utility relocations and the underpinning concept for the High Line; and AECOM designed temporary in-tunnel systems. Construction is expected to start in 2023.

The proposed Gautrain Rapid Rail Link (GRRL) will require approximately 15 km of double or twin high-speed rail track tunnels located for the greater part beneath the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, including Houghton, Rosebank and Sandton. During the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) it became clear that potential surface vibration above and in the vicinity of the tunnels was a matter of serious concern to the residents of the affected properties and that the impact required assessment. The general method proposed is based on a US Department of Transportation, 1998, publication in which abase vibration curve derived for typical high-speed passenger trains is adjusted for the topological, geological and other features to predict the surface vibration and the associated ground-borne noise. The predictions indicate that some isolated areas might be impacted but that the impact will likely be limited, and it is possible to mitigate the impact using suitable track construction methods and track support systems.

"Colored gemstones are most often mined in small scale artisanal mining operations. Sri Lanka is well known as source for precious stones since thousands of years. Gemstones are mine in small open pits, directly in rivers (river dredging) and in underground mines. Almost all mined deposits are alluvial deposits. PRECIOUS STONES AND DEPOSITS Precious stones from Sri Lanka are well known for thousands of years. Tales and legends from Arabia, India, China and reports from discoverers like Marco Polo describe the fabulous stones from Ceylon which was the name for Sri Lanka before 1972. Already 1000 BC King Salomon got valuable gemstones from the legendary Queen of Sheba on her visit to Jerusalem. Paintings (frescoes) of the “cloud maidens” with huge gemstones can be seen at the “mirror walls” of the Sigiriya rock fortress - one of the eight World Heritages Sites of Sri Lanka.And even today some of the most valuable and most desired gemstones come from Sri Lanka. The term “Ceylon Sapphire” stands for an excellent royal blue color of high quality corundum from Sri Lanka. Reason enough to look a bit closer how these gemstones are mined. Sri Lanka has rich gemstone deposits which are mined underground, in small open pits or directly within a river. Some of the primary deposits in magmatic and metamorphic rock are also known, but most gemstones are mined in secondary alluvial deposits. Gem bearing deposits can be found in a band from NW to SE. Highly probable deposits and main mining areas can be found around Ratnapura – the city of gems, down to the coast (Matale) and up to the region around Elahera. These secondary deposits are mostly thin layers of gravel and sand, so called “illam”. The depth can vary between some dm to 10 25 m or even almost 40 m. But the average depth is about 12 m. Gemstone mining is controlled, licensed and regulated by a special authority – the National Gem and Jewelry Authority - which was founded in 1993. Another task of this authority is the promotion and development of the gemstone industry and the control of import and export of gemstones. Any violence of the NGJA law can lead to a fine or even up to 5 years imprisonment. To increase the confidence in the gemstone industry the Authority offers a unique service to foreigners. All bought gemstones can be tested free of charge in certain laboratories in Ratnapura and Colombo. So visitors can be sure they got no imitations, wrong stones or even synthetic stones or glass. It was said that detected synthetic stones will be destroyed and the seller will do all he can to replace the stone with the right stone. Otherwise he will lose his license."

The elements of consistent structural de sign models for underground structures are explained. Such models should comprise at least ground properties, excavation and support methods, computational models for analysis, failure hypotheses, and in-situ monitoring. The fundamental characteristics of the interaction between ground and support are investigated. Then, plane strain models for soft ground tun- nelling and design models for rock tunnelling employing stress release at the tunnel face are elaborated. Some numerical evaluations are gi- ven in diagrams, comparing approaches of dif- ferent authors. Comments are presented on nume- rical three-dimensional models (visualized by structural models for mining in rock salt), on the interaction of in-situ monitoring and design, on structural safety for underground structures, and finally on the general develop- ment of structural design models in geo- Techniques.

This paper outlines the manner in which legislative control for tunnelling and allied operations has evolved, detailing Victorian experience. It examines the concept of mine managers as it relates to the industry and attemps to illustrate its benefits. The Victorian experience in relation to fatal and serious accidents is examined in detail, particularly in the allied art of trenching and examines the Krings system of trench lining support which is hoped will catalyse an increase of engineering expertise in this area. The paper concludes by demonstrating that safety awareness is not incompatible with production efficiency or economic viability.

This general report considers what promoters of deep basement projects want from their teams and whether they get it often enough. Most large projects are based on complex financial models where the funding is related to a future income stream. Project delays and cost over-runs can critically affect the financial model. Too often, delays and cost over-runs originate in the substructure and foundations. We must take positive steps to improve our industry's reputation for reliability.

A method is proposed for computing (a possible solution of) the ground reaction curve, for use in tunnel support analysis, in cases where the initial stress field is not hydrostatic.
