The Gibraltar Mine and Mill facility were commissioned in 1972 by Gibraltar Mines Ltd utilizing a flowsheet consisting of two stages of crushing followed by a rod mill / ball mill grinding circuit. During operations a number of opportunities were evaluated to expand the mill capacity; however, the economics of the day did not allow any of these projects to proceed. The mine continued to operate until late 1998 when it was shutdown and put on care and maintenance due to low commodity prices. Taseko Mines acquired Gibraltar in 1999 and in 2004, with the improvement in the metal markets, made the decision to restart operations. During the restart planning a number of opportunities for mill improvements and upgrades were identified and, after operations were successfully restarted, the decision was made to once again review expansion opportunities for Gibraltar. Taseko evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a SAG Mill, convert the existing rod mills to ball mills and distribute the SAG discharge to the resultant six 6 parallel ball mills. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the SAG mill grinding circuit.

At this time, when electricity in its various applications is attract- ing so much interest, and with such good reason, it has been suggested to me that, as the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, of Aspen, Pitkin county, Colorado, was the first mining company in America to employ electrical power for hoisting, a record of what has been accomplished by this company would be of interest. Early in the year 1888 the question of power for the development of the ore-horizon lying below the level of the tunnel through which the property is worked, became one of importance. The conditions under which it was proposed to use power were as follows (See Fig. 1): The company's mines lie upon the northwestern slope of a mountain, the ascent of which is at an angle of 28' from the horizon. The ore, consisting of argentiferous galena and other silver-bearing mineral, is found at or near the plane of contact of a superincumbent mass of blue limestone, with an underlying bed of dolomite. ?Demand-side measure" means a rate, measure, action or program undertaken to conserve energy or promote energy efficiency?? (BCUC, 1996) In actual economical environment, business sustainability requires high-efficiency technological processes. That is why the efficiency concept has to be present at all levels of industrial activities. Nowadays, some purchasing decisions are still driven predominately by the purchase price, in spite of the evidence that such price represents up to 5 % to 7 % of the total costs of ownership with full consequences of energy efficiency and the impact on total ownership costs. The paper presents essentials of converter types and basics of the Global Efficiency (GEff) Concept that has been promoted over the last few years in South African industries (Pitis et al., 2006/7). GEff concept is proven as a useful tool used on price-efficiency decisions. Theoretical and technical aspects of this concept were substantiated with case studies. First part presented in this paper will describe how GEff concept was used on price ? efficiency decisions when single input or direct converters and systems (considered as low value equipments) have been replaced. Besides the impact of energy savings and new innovative developments, the paper suggests general other benefits of: ? Technical and economical performance improvements and competitiveness of mining corporations to international standards; ? Defusing incipient energy crisis in the sector; ? Improving environmental conditions; ? Creating new job opportunities in mining sector. Proposed concept in this paper could be further developed as models of improving companies? corporate energy policies.

A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

UNUSUAL interest has recently centered in the Mojave mining district of California, owing to new discoveries of gold ore at the Silver Queen mine, and subsequently at other neighboring proper- ties. These finds have proved that opportunities exist for the prospector even in old mining districts, where careful search may still be rewarded. The Mojave district is characterized by a group of small hills centering around Soledad Butte, four to six miles southwest of Mojave, in Kern County. This butte is 1250 ft. higher than the surrounding desert and 4000 ft. above sea level. Four miles west of Soledad Mountain are the so-called Middle Buttes, a group of flat-topped hills. Many in the environmental movement have focused on this element. But, nothing they or anyone does will change the amount of arsenic in the world. This report is on actual commercial plants that we developed and operated to recover or stabilize arsenic values from metallurgical dusts from gold and copper pyro operations and arsenical gold bearing ores. When they were available gold and copper values were recovered. Our experience in arsenic extends over thirty years. My first corporation, Mineral Research & Development Corporation was the first in North America to manufacture the then new CCA (copper-chrome-arsenic) wood preservatives. This class of wood preservatives proved to be so effective that it made wood into an entirely new material of construction. It is not uncommon for wood properly treated with arsenical CCA preservatives to last for thirty; forty, and sixty years. Over a hundred years have been projected in some field tests. Hundreds of thousands of trees have been saved. Millions more trees would have been saved had environmentalists not decided that their arsenic phobia was more important than trees. There are several variations of CCA. The most popular is CCA-C. Its formula is: CrO3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47.5% CuO . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18.5% As2O5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34.0% Until recent restrictions were placed on the consumption of arsenical wood preservatives, annual consumption in North America was about 150,000,000 lbs./yr. About 64,500,000 of arsenic as the pentoxide was safely consumed this way. World CCA consumption has been about double the above figures or 300,000,000 lbs. as 100% CCA and 129,000,000 lbs/yr as As2O5. Close to 100% of all the arsenic used in wood preservatives is derived from gold or copper processing. The valence of arsenic required for CCA wood preservatives and many other markets is the same valence that is required for stabilization. The economic challenge is how to get there. We have built and operated eleven plants to oxidize arsenic trioxide to its pentavalent form. Most of these have been classic in that they used a common oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid to achieve this.

Gold was first discovered on the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862, and soon there were over 3000 miners working on the river. It has often been called the richest river in the world. Most countries probably have one of these, but it was certainly the richest in New Zealand. In the early days some miners collected as much as 200 oz/d from a sluice box, and the early river gravels must have been extremely rich before the gold bearing terrace gravels were sluiced into the river. Otago produced about 10 Moz out of the NZ total of over 30 Moz. Most of this was alluvial and possibly one third or more came from the Shotover. The extremely cold winter and danger of flooding made it a dangerous river to work. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 ft overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. These hazards still exist and dominate the method of working. The early hand miners cleaned out much of the riverbed, and the advent of the hydraulic elevator enabled deeper parts of the river to be worked over. Extensive sluicing of high terraces also took place particularly around Skippers. Several companies have attempted operations on the Shotover. Many of these were distinctly unsuccessful, such as the suction dredge at Maori Point about 1930 and the Skippers Limited fluming in about 1934. At least two attempts were made to divert the river with the Sandhills cut above Skippers and the Oxenbridge Tunnel down near Arthur's Point.

AT Kellogg, Idaho, J. Fred Johnson is driving the 5000.-ft Hooper Tunnel under contract for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining Co. This was visited by a group of engineers during the recent meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Spokane, who were impressed with several features of the work. An excellent record of advance is being made by the contractor, over 47 ft. being driven in 3 days during October, and 223 ft. advanced in 29 shifts. The size of the tunnel is 8 by 9 ft. The ground is Wallace quartzite and, save for the first hundred feet, stands well and does not require timbering. The grade is held uniformly at 0.5 per cent. Two shifts are employed, with two sets of machine men to the shift. Ingersoll-Rand S-70 drills are used. each machine being set up independently in the heading; 26-30 holes are drilled to the round; using 1 1/4: in. round hollow drill steel. A 7-hole cut is required, and these holes are blasted simultaneously, using 60 per cent gelatine, 12 sticks to the hole. Instantaneous and fire delays of electric detonators are used for the complete round. A feature of the drilling is the use of long carriage drills, necessitating fewer changes of steel, and more time spent on drilling, with less time consumed taking steel back and forth from the face. Of course, this means better blacksmithing so that the drill steel shall stand up for the added footage.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

Fifteen years after it was created to help cope with a growing worldwide mineral shortage, M&M is ceasing publication. In its place will be a bright, new publication called Minerals Today. Like its venerable predecessor, Minerals Today will be a bimonthly magazine that reports on recent trends and issues in the minerals and materials industries. It will be the Bureau of Mines' most frequent periodical presenting an overview of the entire field of minerals and materials.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a project to build a cable-stayed bridge and border crossing across the Detroit River. With a span length of 2,800-ft (853.4 meters), the Gordie Howe International Bridge will have the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. Each tower has two legs that are supported by six drilled shafts each for a total of 12. The tower shafts are 9.84 feet in diameter (3-m) and extend well into bedrock. 17 each, 6.6 feet (2-m) drilled shafts were built to support the aging river bulkhead and replace shipping bollards. In addition to shallow groundwater fed by the Detroit River, artesian conditions at depth result in a water head that is approximately 17.2-ft (5.2-m) above surface. At 95-ft (29-m) below grade Dundee Limestone, of the Detroit River Group, is moderately weathered and fracture density decreases with depth. The Dundee Limestone strength ranges from 8-ksi (55.1-MPa) to 12-ksi (82-MPa) and may carry hydrogen sulfide in fractures. Working through casing that sticks three stories out of the ground is less than ideal, but was necessary to maintain a positive fluid head and prevent artesian-related quality issues. The sheer scale of the bridge forces required a load test configuration that could impart an equivalent static load of over 38,000,000 pounds (170-MN). A suite of QA/QC tests was developed to ensure the shafts would meet the project plans and specifications to include critical base cleanliness criteria. Interesting CSL and TIP results obtained highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each test method. Cleaning drilling fluids with a centrifuge allowed recycling of product and reduced exposure to environmental contaminate exposure. Having large construction equipment working next to the river presented challenges in working pad design. A driven pile system was developed to support high oscillator forces and protect the aging seawall.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.

"The $200M rehabilitation of the more than 100-year-old Gowanus Flushing Tunnel and pumping station located on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY required deep excavations in an extremely congested urban environment. The environment posed significant challenges, including: support of excavation for protection of existing structures, excavation through man-made fill while eliminating groundwater inflow due to potentially contaminated groundwater chemistry; discharge and disposal impacts; and potential settlement of surrounding structures. This paper will present the design and construction challenges associated with the construction of a new combined sewer overflow (CSO) chamberwhich included a jet grout bottom seal, to mitigate groundwater inflow during excavation. The foundation for the finished structure also included a unique system incorporating the jet grout bottom seal elements with deep jet grout columns (piles) acting as the foundation system for the final structure. Design and construction challenges included highly variable soil conditions such as man-made fill, obstructions from previous construction, presence of an organic stratum, and conflicts with existing timber foundation piles. The jet grout bottom seal was constructed in loose sands with the deeper jet grout foundation elements extending to bear on a dense sand stratum. Challenges associated with the bottom seal included grid spacing and construction sequencing. Wet in wet sequencing was used to mitigate potential windows in the bottom seal further complicated by shadowing from existing timber foundation piles.Introduction And BackgroundModernization of the Gowanus Tunnel Pumping System required deep excavations in the extremely congested urban environment of Brooklyn, NY. The project location is shown on Fig. 1 and 2. The focus of this paper is to present the design and construction challenges associated with the support of excavation, control of groundwater, and ultimate foundation support for the combined sewer overflow (CSO) bypass chamber extension. The project site was tightly constrained by adjacent, active roadways and underground utilities, as well as residential and industrial structures. Therefore, excavation support was required to limit ground movement and maintain the integrity of the surrounding facilities. Excavation depths to as much as 16 ft below ground level, 8 ft below groundwater, required that seepage and groundwater be controlled so as to minimize pumping and disposal of groundwater and maintain the surrounding groundwater levels to avoid potential settlement of adjacent roadways, utilities, and structures. In addition, the subsurface conditions required that the proposed CSO bypass chamber extension be supported on a deep foundation to avoid differential and total settlements that may be detrimental to the existing and expanded structure. Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

Line One, installed in 1963, was built by Lurgi as a downdraft process furnace utilizing a furnace fan for the recuperation of hot gases from the cooling zone. This line was modified in 1966 to include both updraft drying and downdraft drying, and the original roof burners were converted to side-wall burners. Line Two, a Dravo-Lurgi furnace with an annual capacity of 2.4 million long tons, was built in 1966. This modification also permitted utilization of monolithic refractory in place of pre-fired shapes, thereby improving over-all furnace availability and reducing refractory stock requirements from 154 different shapes to 18.Data are presented to compare operating performance of the Dravo-Lurgi furnace and the modified Lurgi furnace. These data show 30 per cent lower fuel oil consumption and 10 per cent higher capacity per unit grate area for the Dravo-Lurgi furnace, which also averages higher availability due to greater operating flexibility."
