The trend in mining thermal coal is only to mine coal with the lowest sulphur content. In many coal seams, bands of coal with high sulphur content are often present, generally occurring either at the roof or floor level. Methods of selective mining are, therefore, necessary to recover only the low sulphur coal. This paper examines the methods currently in use in mines and the alternative methods that are able or have potential to offer control of shearers and continuous miners where greater thicknesses of coal have to be left in the roof and floor. These alternative methods rely on such characteristics as neutron gamma radiation; electromagnetic waves; vibration; infrared; infrared; optical; pick force; X-ray fluorescence; conductivity; gyroscopes and laser systems.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

A rigorous horizontal drilling and chemical grouting program was specified beneath the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101) section of Los Angeles Metrorail Contract C-311.Twin 6.67-m (22-ft.) diameter starter tunnels were to be conventionally mined through amixed alluvial and bedrock face consisting of silty sand, gravel, and weathered sandstone and siltstone of the Topanga Group. The contact between the alluvium and bedrock dipped toward the Crossover Excavation where the horizontal drilling and grouting operations were performed. The intent of this grouting program was to stabilize the mixed face to minimize ground loss and surface settlement, and to reduce groundwater inflow into the tunnel headings. Given the highly variable mixed face conditions, horizontal drilling up to 86 m (284 ft.) resulted in upward trending trajectories which likely followed the bedrock contact. Chemical grouting was performed in a primary, secondary and tertiary, three dimensional sequence. Evaluation of the primary and secondary grouting parameters indicated where tertiary grouting was required. Grouting pressures induced a small rock failure at the tunnel heading as well as increased stresses on the tiebacks of the excavation.

Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol's (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. A storage and drainage tunnel advancing below I-75 in Detroit, Michigan experienced sudden subsidence. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was damaged to the extent that its shield, cutting head and extensive interior components needed to be extracted and replaced along with several completed tunnel segments. The tunnel was 16 feet (4.9m) in diameter with crown over 79 feet (24m) deep at the time. The tunneling contractor immediately engaged their designers and specialty subcontractors to develop a scheme to access the machine and repair the tunnel. They required a shaft 99 feet (30m) deep, with unobstructed plan dimension of 50 feet (15m) to accommodate the large components that needed to be removed and replaced. This precluded the application of an internally braced excavation and instead earth support solutions focused on use of a compression ring. Since the completed tunnel section behind the TBM obstructed closure of the compression ring below its invert, this paper describes the innovative access shaft solution employed. A conventional compression ring was constructed using 5 feet (1.5m) diameter drilled shafts down to the tunnel crown. In front of, and to the sides of the tunnel heading, the secant shafts were extended to over 150 feet (46m) depth, creating a horseshoe of support extending 50 feet (15m) below the planned excavation invert. Larger diameter "King Pile" shafts were drilled immediately to either side of the tunnel, overlapped into each end of the secant "horseshoe". The king pile shafts, together with a heavily reinforced ring beam above the crown elevation, acted as a door frame to transfer hoop loads from the incomplete secant arc into reaction supports above and below the tunnel. These oversize king pile shafts were extended and socketed into rock over 70 feet (21m) below tunnel invert. Very tight installation tolerances were necessary to maintain secant shaft alignment to depths exceeding 150 feet (46m). The project operational, geotechnical, and quality data was managed and visualized using a custom GIS interface. This paper will present the design approach employed and review the construction and quality program selected to repair the tunnel.

Today we are talking about Industry 4.0, as the latest revolution of industrial processes and progress, considering that the steam engine (Industry 1.0), railways and cars, mass production in the 1920th (2.0), Industrial Automation (3.0), and finally integrated manufacturing, integrated communication, and internet (4.0) can be seen as the state-of-the-art situation in industry, nowadays. Similar to the Industry progress, we can approach the rolling process of material, which started about 150 years ago in a very basic way. Steam engine- and belt driven-mills were very operators’ intensive, brutal and risky to operate. Mechanical improvements brought throughput, safety and quantity, as also quality of the products. The rolling of steel, in particular of rails, beams, rebar, strip (focus in this paper) and plate has enabled the large scale transport and travel, the building of bridges and buildings, the manufacturing of ships and cars. From single stands to continuous rolling trains the production and quality of mills increased significantly. From ingots and blooms to slabs, we have to admit a big jump in which has changed the face of the world significantly. Thin Slab Rolling has revolutionized the output and the throughput of rolling mills (Generation 3.0 to 5.0). Finally, Endless Rolling, has boosted the quality and quantity of rolling mill processes and permitted nowadays to enter in market niches which were not thinkable a decade ago. Mastering the automation and applying reliable systems (mechanical and electronically) of drives, actuators and sensors, as also communication and information interchange to all levels of automation are the success factors of such complex mills, we call herein after “Rolling Mills of Generation 6.0”.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron and carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and engine oil) and four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5 and 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperatures. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

During the past decade, over 114-km (71-mi) of 0.25-m (10-in) to 3.7-m (144-in) finished diameter tunnels have been driven below Metropolitan Houston as part of a major program of water and wastewater improvements. This large effort has seen the introduction of midwestern technology with over 18-km (11-mi) of man-entry pipe jacking and European and Japanese technology with over 21-km (13-mi) of microtunneling. Owing to the high water table; a stratigraphy consisting of stiff fissured clays containing numerous layers, channels, and lenses of water-charged sands and silts; and active faults, many challenges existed for designers and contractors alike.

Transitions between geological/geotechnical soil units have a critical impact on the operation and performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling is used to quantify the uncertainty in soil transition locations. This paper presents two unique soft-ground tunneling case studies where the results from the geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling are compared to the TBM data and as-encountered ground conditions derived from the actual TBM data. The assessment enhances the confidence in using geostatistics to improve ground awareness for efficient tunnel construction, minimizing different site condition (DSC) claims, and improving decision-making on tunnel projects.

It is crucial to record ground movement of any magnitude to enable the safe and economical design of excavations and infrastructure. The DigiMine Laboratory is equipped with technologies to record such movements. This paper analyses the effectiveness of the Digital Mine instrumentation in recording earth movements in light of the Botswanan earthquake which occurred on the 3rd of April 2017 at 17:40 UTC. Recordings from the Digital Mine are compared with other ground sensing technologies which also captured the event (USGS and GEOFON systems). USGS and GEOFON system’s recordings suggest that, there are a number of possible mechanisms that could have resulted in the earthquake as discussed in the paper. Compared to the USGS and GEOFON systems, DigiMine system could not provide an analysis that could give possible source mechanisms. However, the system’s success in recording the Botswanan earthquake, is an indication that the system works and can be further developed or improved. For a comprehensive analysis, more data from various sensors needs to be collected. For example, DigiMine connecting to the national seismic monitoring system or to the local mine’s seismic monitoring system. Such connections will enable the development of a better self-analysis system and possibly prediction of future events. Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. In terms of tunnelling the mining industry is generally thought of as the crude cousin of the civil construction industry. Mining has tended to concentrate on speed and flexibility rather than the high standards required in civil tunnelling. Historically this difference has been based on the belief that such high standards were not required by the mining industry, they would slow down the development of the project and as a result increase the costs and extend the time period between start up and a positive cashflow.For civil works the construction of a tunnel is the project, for mining the construction of declines, crosscuts and drives are merely the means of accessing the orebody so that the real work can begin û MINING. Extraction of ore is the core business of most mining companies û it is what pays the bills.Though most mining companies have the equipment, the people, the knowledge and the ability to excavate tunnels, in the past mining companies did not appear to put the same energy into their tunnelling operations as they put into improving their ore extraction operations. In the past decade this appears to have changed, many mining companies now realise how important the correct excavation of a decline is to the success of the overall mining operation. They began to recognise that there were cost benefits to be gained in using the correct development techniques without overly sacrificing the benefits of speed and flexibility.This recognition also coincided with the growth of underground contractors whose predominant work was primary development (declines and ore access crosscuts and drives). The contractors again had the same knowledge, the same people, and similar equipment but their focus was different from that of the mining company û the contractors were focused on the development of the mine, the excavation of declines, crosscuts and drives. These deliverables were the contractorsÆ core business û itÆs what paid the bills.
