I presume that the questioner is not asking about the reduction of sulfate in groundwater to hydrogen sulfide as a result of biological activity promoted by organics in the grout hardener and that the question relates to sulfate attack on cementitious grout systems. For the project in Spain presented in my paper, we used a very high pulverized fuel ash (PFA) content in the cementitious material. This gives good sulfate resistance and indeed the chemical interaction will actually cause the permeability to drop for about 50 years without any question of sulfate attack and damage to the whole thickness of the grout - of course there will be attack at the exposed face of the grout where it is in contact with the contaminated groundwater. The mix had over 75% PFA, and also a very high overall cementitious content. The mix was the contractor's design and showed excellent behavior in laboratory proving trials. In grouts as distinct from concrete, PFA gives significantly better sulfate resistance than ground granulated blast furnace slag which is often used in Europe as a component of bentonite-cement mixes for slurry trench cut-off walls.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

INTRODUCTION Bratislava is located at the intersection of important traffic routes, including motor-ways, roads, railways, air traffic, trading, and inland waterway with an important harbour. The construction of the D2 Motorway Bratislava, Lamacska cesta Stare grunty was the last missing section of D2 Motorway and its completion linked the Czech Republic through Bratislava to the Hungarian Republic. Traffic was obliged until its completion to use the Lamacska Road and Mlynska Dolina, which were the most heavily trafficked roads in the city. The section of D2 Motorway to be completed in 2006 was 3,300m in length, of which the SITINA Tunnel was approximately half the length. After putting into operation the transit traffic(motorway) and urban traffic was separated. Transit traffic by passing the town was eased. The junctions D2 with Lamacska Road (Harmincova) and Mlynska Dolina also allowed better use of the motorway for the urban traffic The tunnel construction was specified by the features with the highly weathered and thermally altered granitic rock formation with the overburden of Quaternary sediment of 2?4 m thick, very thin overburden, severely controlled deformation limit and environmental protection. The tunnel had to be excavated beneath and nearby the academic complex area and the zoo, where sensitive facilities exist and animals live in. The tunnel consisted of two tunnels (Tunnel A and B) with the length of 1,415 and 1,440 m, respectively. The overburden thickness was in the range from 10?30 m. The standard cross-section and the one with invert arch were 79.5?81.5 m2 and 92.1?93.3 m2. The excavation took 21 months from September 2003 to May 2005. The construction was based on the concept of NATM. The SITINA Tunnel was the third application of NATM in Slovakia, following the BRANKISKO Tunnel (commenced in July 2003) as the first and the HORELICA Tunnel (in October 2004) as the second NATM practice. To protect the surrounding structures and citizens from tunneling operations, seismic monitoring was performed in association with blasting. The allowable limit of blasting vibration was fixed to be under the particle velocity of 15 mm/sec. The tunnel excavation cleared this limit as expected before construction. In driving through the difficult geological situation the excavation work hit 49 faults, and some of them occasionally caused serious face instability. In principle, the rock formation has been affected by the high hydrothermal effect and the resultant clay filing along faults and joints. The auxiliary reinforcement with the 4?8 m long pipe roofing was needed to protect the vicinity of mining face area. This operation extraordinarily required additional works and time which had not been expected before construction.

This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

The Los Bronces Development Project (LBDP) was approved in October 2007 by the Anglo American plc Board at a capital cost of some US$1.74B, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. The project represents a big step forward for the Los Bronces mine since it will increase the treatment rate by 140%, the mining rate by 64% and almost double copper production during the first four years of the project. This economy of scale will also position Los Bronces as a much bigger and efficient mining operation, better prepared to face adverse market scenarios and allowing Anglo to consolidate its position in base metals. The project addressed numerous scope alternatives such as plant capacity vs mine capacity, cut-off grade strategy to maximise value based on the existing flotation and leaching process, cutback strategy, etc. Main infrastructure aspects of the project are as follows: ?Dump area with 2400Mt capacity for waste and low grade material ?Mining equipment: 1 x electric shovel, 12 x 300t trucks, 1 x drill ?Primary crusher: 60? x 89? ?Three new power lines (144MW capacity) ?Grinding plant at 87kt/day nominal capacity (includes a 4.3km tunnel with a regenerative conveyor belt) ?Grinding plant: 1 SAG mill 40? x 25?, 2 ball mills ?Slurry pipeline (52 km from grinding to flotation plant) with five choke stations ?Flotation plant (rougher, cleaning, regrinding circuits and molybdenum flotation). The history of Los Bronces started in 1867 when it was discovered. In 1978 ENAMI (Government company) sold Los Bronces to Exxon for US$112M. The same year a snow avalanche destroyed San Francisco Flotation Plant. In 1979 the plant was rebuilt at 4.9kt/day and from 1979 to 2002 several plant expansions were made up to 54kt/day capacity. In 2002 Anglo acquired Los Bronces for US$1.3B. The 2002 resource and reserve statement showed reserves at 459Mt at 1.02%CuT and resources at 780Mt at 0.80%CuT. The 2007 statement shows reserves at 1,480Mt at 0.67%CuT and resources at 1,644Mt at 0.45%CuT. Defining the size of a plant expansion is the key challenge that any expansionary project faces. The scope of this paper is a general review of the project, describing all the mining techniques that were used to define the best options that maximise value. In this context, a range of plant capacities (from 58 to 230kt/day) combined with a range of mining capacities (from 83 to 166Mt/a) were evaluated in detail, defining for each option a mine plan, Capex and Opex, and cut-off grade strategy for flotation and leaching processes and the associated Net Present Value (NPV) that was used as the selection criteria. The Los Bronces mineral resources potential provides good growth opportunities for the mine beyond LBDP implementation, offering an exciting invitation to continue studying new initiatives that maximise the value of this deposit.

Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine operates the only coarse coal hoisting and overland slurry transport system in North America. The system has been in operation since April 1980 and according to current haulage levels will have handled over two million tons by this conference date. Original performance goals have been exceeded. The systems will be described and their application to rapid excavation and tunneling haulage needs will be discussed. The technology and the knowledge about the behavior of explosives and detonation accessories allowed to create new products for different situations by the restrictions imposed by the market. In a Brazilian underground copper mine the restriction occurred in the use of high grammage Det Cord in the development heading blasts perimeter holes. Enaex Brazil has developed Densiex UG™ (Low-Density Bulk Emulsion), a water-resistant bulk gassing emulsion with a density ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 g/cm³ to replace the high grammage Det Cord in blasts. That product is pumped in the same Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU) as Enaex Brazil's standard underground (UG) bulk emulsion. This product has a Lower Velocity of Detonation (VOD), vibration, and detonation pressure, which contributes to a better finishing of the drift, lower impact in the support structures, and lower generation on unstable rocks in the perimeter of the drift. This case aims to summarize the results of the work on the application of the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion in perimeter holes in an underground development gallery at an underground copper mine in Brazil. During this work, 10 horizontal drift blasts were performed using the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion, which presented an average density of 0.64 g/cm³, increasing safety, a 25% reduction in overbreak, a 23% reduction in scaling time, elimination of rework, and a saving of $135,000 per year for this business partner that immediately implemented this new product in all blasts at this mine.

Underground mines are complex environments that require continuous control and monitoring actions in order to have a safe and efficient operation. At Nexa, the goal of achieving "zero harm" promotes the constant search for in its operational processes. Currently, there are manual activities that reduce the agility and precision when working with information from inside the mine, using mostly radio communication and management by sight of badges as an operational standard. This project was born in the context of increasing the operational safety of underground mines, bringing gains to the entire process involving the underground.

The background for the 630-million-dollar-plus iron ore project at Kudremukh is outlined. The system and plants for mining, crushing, concentrating, transporting via a slurry pipeline, filtering and shiploading 7.5 million metric tons of iron ore per year are fully described. The mode of operation and the problems encountered in such a transfer of North American technology to developing countries are analyzed. Difficulties encountered during construction are discussed and the progress milestones made over a two-year period are enumerated.

[THE BUREAU OF MINES receives many requests for information regarding the low-temperature carbonization properties of American coals. This report presents in collected form the results of Fischer-Schrader bench-scale, low-temperature carbonization assays at 500° C. made by the Chemistry and Physics Section at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines. Most of the assays were made of coals tested in connection with a survey of gas and coke-making properties of American coals,4 which was started in 1928 by the Bureau in cooperation with the American Gas Association. Other coals were assayed in connection with miscellaneous investigations. Since 1930 about 400 samples of coal were assayed from nearly every coal-producing State, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada. The results of the tests on about two-thirds of the coals are scattered through more than 50 separate publications. This paper summarizes the data in the published reports as well as all unpublished data obtained to January 1, 1956. The report also includes a detailed description of the procedure used in making the assay.]

The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.

IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.
