The combination of two top levels of cross-lot braces designed and installed to act as a truss, and vertical post-tensioning of the panels allow the unbraced excavation of a 36' span. Philosophy of Excavation Support System The excavation of interest is for the cut-and-cover box sections of the southern approach to the Third Harbor Tunnel, which is part of the Central Artery/Tunnel project in Boston, Massachusetts. The 60' deep excavation is located very close to an existing building which is supported by piles, as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, it was necessary to minimize ground movement which may damage the building.

Samuel Hopkins, an 18th century inventor from Philadelphia, has been little noted nor long remembered by History, but it was he who on July 31, 1790, obtained what no other man can ever achieve -the first patent issued by the Government of the United States. Signed by President George Washington, the patent guaranteed to Hopkins the protection of the American Government for his "improvement, not known or used before, . . . in the making of Potash . . . by a new Apparatus and Process." The patent itself is no longer important, but it serves as a milestone in the development of an industry that is now rapidly moving to fulfill its role as a mineral to feed the world. Potash ranks as one of the oldest products of Man, having been used as a condiment by the habitants of Gaul a thousand years before Athens achieved its Golden Age of culture. By Hopkins' time, the uses of potash had changed considerably, going primarily into glass-making, tanning, soap, and explosives, yet the same sources and techniques of manufacturing potash used during the earlier 2000 years-that is, leaching of plant ashes in iron pots with water, followed by water evaporation and crystallization of the potassium salts-were still being used.

The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes our recent investigations of the potential role of silicon-oxygen based free radical species in the biochemical mechanism of the lung injury caused by the inhalation of freshly fractured silica. The impetus for this study came from the following observations. Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of acute and chronic silicosis. Chronic silicosis is characterized by the development of sharply marked concentric fibrotic nodules in the lung. This occurs over a period of several decades with the development of progressive respiratory impairment. In contrast, acute silicosis is manifested by the filling of the alveoli with an amorphous lipoproteinaceous exudate within a short period after exposure, and rapid development of respiratory disability often leading to fatality. Most studies on the pathogenesis of silicosis have focused on the elucidation of cellular mechanisms of cell injury and the development of chronic silicosis. Because pulmonary responses to crystalline silica are distinctly different for · the acute and chronic silicosis, we hypothesized that the acute response is associated with some unique properties of ·freshly formed silica particle surfaces, due to the formation of some reactive chemical species caused by the rupturing or the silicon-oxygen bonds. In occupations involving drilling, tunneling and sandblasting operations acute silicosis can be correlated with this unique surface reactivity of silica. The formation or reactive species was demonstrated, using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy (Dalal et al., 1986; Fuibini et al., 1987; Hochstrasser and Antononi, 1972). Grinding of quartz crystals under ultra high vacuum (10-10 torr) leads to the formation of Si- and SiO• radicals and these radicals are quenched by exposure to air and other gases (Hochstrasser and Antonini, 1972). ESR signals have also been reported from micronized quartz samples that were evacuated at 413 K (Bolls et al., 1983). In order to find a more direct relationship of such radicals to acute silicosis, we made ESR measurements on quartz dusts freshly ground in ambient air and found- that indeed grinding under ambient environment leads to the formation of the Si• and SiO• type of radicals which decay on storing the dusts in air or in biological buffers (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988). The Si• and SiO radical formation on grinding has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, we recently found that •OH radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz (Dalai et al., 1988; Shi et al., 1988; Vallyathan et al., 1988). We have subsequently carried out detailed cytotoxicity and biological assays on freshly made as well as aged quartz dusts. As summarized below, the results provide new insight into the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis."

"Coal seam gas problems can adversely affect the safety and productivity of underground coal mines, leading to fatalities and financial losses. Conventional gas management technologies using ventilation and gas drainage are unable to deal with the high and irregular gas emissions associated with high-production longwall mining. New technologies need to be developed to supplement the traditional gas management techniques to minimize the hazard of coal seam gas. Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have gained some success for rock surface support since their introduction to the mining industry. Due to their relatively low permeability and appropriate mechanical properties, TSLs also show potential to be used as a gas management tool in underground coal mines.In this paper we review the current gas management challenges and discuss the potential use of TSLs as a gas management tool in underground coal mines. This may involve reducing gas migration into the excavations/roadways, enhancing in-seam gas drainage, and preventing spontaneous combustion. Some potential areas for future research work are identified. IntroductionWhen a coal seam is influenced by mining activities, gas stored inside is liberated into the underground ventilation system. Gas emissions have created serious difficulties for the coal mining industry around the world. Therefore, coal mines have to develop effective strategies to control the gas concentration below the threshold value to meet statutory requirements. Ventilation has been the first solution in gas management for underground coal mining. When the emitted gas cannot be effectively diluted by ventilated air, gas drainage using pre- and/or post-drainage has to be introduced. However, even with ventilation and gas drainage, irregular gas emissions usually increase the gas concentration in roadways and slow down the development rate, thus causing significant economic loss to the coal mining industry (Thakur, 2006). Therefore, new technologies need to be developed to address this issue and mitigate the explosion risk."

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11-km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River, which is located within the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (e.g., Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the "Technical Feasibility" phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralization/precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru S.A., and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the treated AMD could be used for supplementing the drinking water supply of Lima and for agricultural (e.g., irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for the implementation of the full-scale treatment facility to the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

A GROUP of 13 cities situated in Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California is engaged in constructing an aqueduct to carry water from the Colorado River at a point near Parker, Arizona, to a distribution point sear Riverside, California. The aqueduct will have a total length of approximately 241 miles, and is designed to deliver 1605 cu. ft. of water per second, or a little more than one billion gallons per day. The aqueduct crosses a barren, desert waste and the project includes approximately 91 miles of 16-ft. tunnel. The large amount of tunnel driving that has been done in this country in the past few years has resulted in some remarkable developments in equipment and methods. The building of the Colorado River Aqueduct, with its 91 miles of tunnels, has called on the best engineering knowledge in the country. New and better equipment has been designed for all phases of the work, and this equipment has been coordinated and adapted to the various conditions with a high degree of efficiency. The result has been that records for tunnel driving have been set under adverse natural conditions that exceed the estimates for progress under good conditions. All of the tunnels in the main aqueduct, except the Valverde and Bernasconi at the western end, have a finished diameter, inside the concrete lining, of 16 ft. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tunnel with the concrete lining in place. Fig. 5 illustrates the finished tunnel in three typical sections. The standard tunnel grade is 3.432 ft. per mile in the 16-ft. tunnels, but the Valverde and Bernasconi tunnels have a steeper grade and a finished diameter of 15 ft. 3 in. The rough bore of the large main aqueduct tunnels averages 12.95 solid cubic yards of material per foot of advance in timbered sections and 10.76 solid cubic yards per foot in unsupported sections.

Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.

The new application and development of grout jacking processes has combined, over the last decade in particular, to provide a method by which the effects of new underground construction on superficial structures can be controlled to acceptable levels. This paper sets out the basic principles, processes and limitations of compensation grouting. It describes key elements of the philosophy and design and details the control systems required to perform satisfactorily. To illustrate the application, a case history is described for the construction of a shaft and tunnel within and beneath the prestigious structure of Harrods in London.

The excavation of ramps and tunnels often requires high-speed development with (or without) the use of high-energy mining equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, TBMs and roadheaders. This high-speed development creates a challenge in terms of providing a safe and productive working environment. For example, heat from continuously exposed surrounding rock, heat from broken rock, heat generated by mining equipment, potential in flows of hot ground water, pollution from associated diesel equipment and the distance of the advancing face from fresh through-ventilation all have to be taken into account when designing ventilation systems for high-speed ramp and tunnel developments. This paper discusses methods of achieving acceptable environments at the face and along the length of the tunnel. The methodology has been successfully implemented in the development of long (up to 20 km) TBM drives in the Lesotho Highlands Project and in mining projects in hot rock using drill and blast methods as well as mechanized methods using continuous miners and roadheaders. The determination of heat loads includes calculation of the heat flow within the surrounding rock, evaluation of the operating cycle of the equipment and the contribution to the overall heat load of the broken rock as it travels out of the tunnel. The determination of heat loads from surrounding rock in new tunnels required a modification of the algorithms generally used for established excavations. The paper also examines the use of, for example, mobile duct and fan systems to ensure that fresh air is delivered to the specific areas where workers are located.

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

Seismic monitoring systems for mining operations are being utilized more than ever before in the characterization of rock mass response to underground and open pit mining. This paper provides a review of the use of microseismic monitoring for rock mechanics applications at mines throughout the world. Some practical considerations for the installation of these systems are presented along with techniques for optimizing seismic array coverage. Case studies and installation examples are also provided. Recent applications of advanced seismic analysis techniques are discussed including the determination of event mechanisms, mapping of maximum peak particle velocity (PPV) and seismic hazard fields, and the use of source parameter data for large event re-entry protocol.

Axial flow fans are commonly used as auxiliary fans in underground mines to supply air to development headings. As diesel dilution requirements increase the fans used in conjunction with ventilation bags are becoming larger in diameter to move greater quantities of air over greater development distances. It is not uncommon for mining operations to sometimes use a number of these larger auxiliary fans with high airflow capacity in parallel as primary fans for the operations. These primary fan stations are often considered temporary installations and the fan selection and fan station design is rarely optimised. These temporary installations may become permanent resulting in an inefficient or unreliable primary ventilation system. A recent study looked at the likely causes of multiple primary fan failures at one operation with axial fans installed as primary units where the fan selection and fan station aerodynamic design was far from optimal. This paper explores some of the typical mechanisms of failure such as high pressure stall, unbalanced airflow, and fan tip speed as well as fabrication material. The paper proposes a number of good practise principles that should be considered during the design of a fan station. A second topic covered is the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of fans such as axial, mixed flow and centrifugal units. Here the concept of fan specific speed and its relevance to fan selection is discussed. Finally the paper quantifies the effect of using a high pressure auxiliary fan as a primary fan in a low pressure circuit, which may increase the mineÆs operation cost.CITATION:van der Sandt, J, van den Berg, L and Roughsedge, D, 2013. In the late 1970s and early 1980s there were a number of attempts to use Tunnel Boring Machines in deep level gold mines. These attempts must be regarded as unsuccessful. Since then there have been comprehensive developments in tunnel boring equipment and tunnel support technology. This paper defines the problems experienced in those early trials, reviews the technology development, and concludes that tunnel boring in deep level goldmines can be justified in today’s environment.

The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue. (See WMATA System Map, Figure 1) The first three shafts were subcontracted from Morrison-Knudsen & Associates, Contract A9a, in July, 1975. Most commercial explosives contain 70 to 94% ammonium nitrate, by weight. When portions of these explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates leach out of them and into ground water. In recent years, State and Federal regulators have been applying more stringent water quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. Bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice at most mines, when mining conditions allow it. ANFO use is desired because it less costly than other explosives, but when spilled it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. They either control explosive losses, or they treat mine effluents at the end-of-pipe. This paper addresses the former solution --controlling explosive losses. For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines designed to limit losses during storage, handling and use, are described in detail.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for

The Company also owns and operates metal mines in the Ophir district, twelve miles south of Bingham, and in the Tintic district, 28 miles south of Ophir. Pre-excavation grouting is a predictable and reliable technique performed to prevent or minimize settlement in advance of, or during the tunneling operation. It safeguards the infrastructure above the tunnel alignment. Cement based suspension grouts and sodium silicate based grouts are frequently injected to consolidate and strengthen the formation and create a reinforced canopy above the tunnel trajectory. Grouting is typically performed through permeation and permeation in conjunction with hydrofracturing. Multiple injection passes through steel sleeve pipes are ideal, since they create an effective forespiling system to facilitate tunneling without causing unacceptable settlement, even with minimal overburden thickness. Ten pre-excavation grouting projects performed in the North America are discussed in this paper.

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota will house four large detector tanks located in deep underground caverns. Construction of the supporting infrastructure required for this project is no complete including installation of a waste rock conveyance system and drill and blast excavation of several supporting drifts and chambers. This paper will discuss the design and construction of these pre-excavation and early works elements, and the overall project schedule as it closes in on commencement of cavern excavation activities.
