The Montana Tunnels diatreme is a low-grade polymetallic ore body containing economically mineable quantities of gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Widely varying gold grades combined with the general erratic nature of the mineralization create a complex sampling, assaying, and ore control problem. In order to maximize productivity and profitability, a variety of procedures have been used. These include differing sample size, frequency and method. In addition, assay techniques have been adjusted and refined to fit specific requirements, the result of which is an accurate, functional sampling and ore control system.

"This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of the sampling efficiency of a blunt cylindrical sampler oriented with respect to the oncoming flow. The number of particles sampled by the cylindrical blunt sampler and an isokinetic sampler is measured using the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. A technique is described to conven the ratio of the particles sampled into the sampling efficiency. The experimental data thus obtained is then compared with the impaction model of Vincent and Mark (1982) with the empirical constant determined from our experiment.. The comparison shows excellent agreement for 0° and 90° orientation.1.0 IntroductionCylindrical dust samplers are widely used in practice to determine the concentration of the airborne particulate matter. The sampler is simply a means to collect particles from the ambient, whose concentration is subsequently measured by some size selective techniques. Gravimetric and optical techniques are the two most commonly used methods to measure the particle sizes. While impactors are used in gravimetric analysis, Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, Aerosizer. Electron microscope, Coulter Counter etc. use the optical method to measure the particle sizes. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and the Aerosizer are the new generation devices which employ the time of flight of particles within intersecting laser beams to determine the particle size.The introduction of the sampler in the free stream disturbs the flow pattern due to two distinct actions of the sampler on the fluid stream: one of them results due to the conformity of the flow to the geometry of the circular cylinder and the second one is caused by the flow into the suction orifice. If the sampler performance is determined by the number of particles entering into the sampler inlet relative to the number of particles present in the free stream, then the particle trajectory outside the sampler and into the inlet is the deterministic factor for the sampling efficiency. The particle trajectory inside the sampler is not important in this case."

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10 % lead and 11.06 % zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

To facilitate the safer and more secure transportation of inmates from San Diego Central Jail to the new San Diego Courthouse, the County of San Diego committed to building a new transfer facility as part of the downtown developments. The transfer facility includes a three-story underground structure adjacent and connected to the Central Jail and a 60-ft deep, 23-ft diameter, 320-ft long tunnel. The tunnel starts at County Jail, passes underneath Western Regional Detention Facility (Old Jail) and, ultimately, connects to the State Courthouse. Condon-Johnson & Associates, Inc. (CJA) was selected to install the temporary shoring shaft for the underground structure as well as three arrays of canopy pipes to support the tunnel’s Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) construction. CJA installed the rectangular 56-ft deep access shaft shoring with three levels of bracing, and a combination of secant piles, soldier piles, and timber lagging. The shoring also included a sliding bridge at top to provide access for trucks to enter and exit from county jail during the duration of construction. Following shoring and shaft excavation, CJA installed and grouted 7-5/8” dia. canopy pipes in 3 reaches, parallel to the longitudinal design line of tunnel with a slight lookout angle. CJA installed 24 each canopy pipes, 99-ft from face of shaft at reach 1, 21 each, 80-ft length canopy pipes at reach 2, and 21 each, 75-ft length pipes at reach 3. CJA confirmed canopy pipe alignment via Inertial Sensing Gyro. To mitigate the possibility of settlements caused by the tunneling operation underneath Old Jail strip footing and grade beams, CJA also performed void fill grouting. Sleeve port grout pipes (SPGP’s) were installed inside the Old Jail basement and grouted with the use of packers as the tunneling operation passed underneath the Old Jail. In detailing various aspects of the construction, this paper aims to magnify the innovative solutions for shoring, canopy pipe installation and void fill grouting challenges as well as the state of the art quality control measures undertaken by CJA.

The Courthouse Commons Tunnel facilitates the secure transfer of inmates between the County Jail and State Courthouse across a city block in downtown San Diego, California. This shallow tunnel was excavated using the Sequential Excavation Method in soft ground. It passes under 8- and 10-story buildings with a foundation cover of 6 feet, and crosses the active San Diego Fault with a design offset displacement of 18 inches. In this paper, key design challenges of tunnel construction are presented: limiting building settlements without using underpinning of building foundations and incorporating an oversized seismic section with seismic joints and crushable backfill

San Diego’s need to access underground space has dictated a long history of tunnel construction. The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

THE committee in charge of arrangements for the meeting of the Institute in September has com-pleted its program. The headquarters of the meeting will be at the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, and the registration committee will be at the hotel all day on Sunday, Sept. 24, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Monday. On Sunday afternoon, automobiles will be available for sightseeing trips around the city. Monday will be devoted to technical sessions. In the morning, there will be sessions on Mining and on Iron and Steel; in the afternoon, sessions on Mining and Milling. At these sessions, in addition to the papers mentioned in the tentative list printed in August, there will be presented three papers on the geology, mining and milling of the Comstock lode; one on the Aztec mine, Baldy, N. M.; one on the Colombian oil fields; and one on charcoal precipitation of cyanide solutions. The luncheon on that day will be Dutch Treat, for men only, at the Engineers Club. On Monday evening, there will be an informal buffet supper at the home of F. W. Bradley. On Tuesday morning, a party of 50 men will leave for Hetch Hetchy. During the four days of the trip, the party will see the Priest tunnel and earth dam under construction by steam-shovel and hydraulic-fill methods, the Big Creek shaft and tunnel, early intake power plant and tunnels and the Hetch Hetchy dam under construction. For those who remain in San Francisco, Tuesday will be "San Francisco Day." There will be motor trips to the Presidio, Cliff House, Golden Gate Park, and other points of interest, and shopping trips to Chinatown. On Wednesday, "University of California Day," the party will be guided through the university by members of the Mining Association, the affiliated stu-dent society, and will see the Greak Theatre and not-able buildings. Thursday will be "Leland Standford, Jr. University Day." Automobiles will leave the Palace Hotel at 10 a.m., and will return from the university at 4.30 p.m. Friday has been reserved for trips to the Selby Smelter, to Mt. Tamalpais, or to other points of interest. Arrangements will be made to visit the mines or gold dredges in California, if members desire to do so, but such trips must of necessity be considered special trips and arrangements will have to be made to suit the convenience of the individual or party. The Golf Committee will make arrangements for those who wish to play golf.

Mine-drainage and the ever-increasing demand for water on the plains have within the past few years necessitated the driving of a great number of adits and tunnels, including many of considerable size and great length. In most instances, existing conditions have called for extreme rapidity of execution; and this necessity, coupled with the high altitudes at which most of the work has been carried on, excessive freight-rates, and difficulty of access, has involved many complex and interesting problems. One of the most rapidly executed undertakings of this class is the Laramie tunnel, recently completed for the Laramie-Poudre Reservoirs & Irrigation Co. This tunnel is driven through Green ridge, a spur of the Continental Divide, which separates the Laramie river from the Cache-la-Poudre in Laramie county, Colo. Green ridge is extremely persistent, and further northward in Wyoming is known as Sherman hill, the highest point on the Union Pacific railway. At the point where the tunnel is driven, two opposing bends bring these streams within 2.5 miles of each other, with a difference in elevation of 500 ft. The rock exposed on the banks of the two rivers does not differ materially in hardness; and, without a geological study of the conditions involved, it would appear that the difference in the depth of erosion of the two streams is due principally to the greater volume of water at this point in the Cache-la-Poudre, which has a drainage-area above the tunnel-portal of 110 sq. miles, as against 30 sq. miles of natural drainage for the Laramie. To increase the water-supply at the tunnel, however, this latter amount has been augmented by two side collection-canals, which bring the available drainage-area up to 84 square miles. "The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. ITA’s membership is comprised of member nations as well as sponsors and affiliate members.The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception, when it was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke, from the U.S., who was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA and became a vice president of ITA. "The 2015 Outstanding Project Award (OPA), which recognizes the superior work of DFI members, was awarded for the San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span. The award was presented to representatives from Caltrans and the T.Y. Lin International/Moffatt & Nichol Joint Venture at the DFI 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Oakland, Calif. A committee selected this project based on size, scope and challenges of the project; degree of innovation and ingenuity exercised; and the uniqueness of the solution to the difficulties of the job. A bridge across the bay between San Francisco and Oakland was proposed as early as 1872, but it took until November 12, 1936, until it became a reality. The bridge spans to the west of Yerba Buena Island were conventional suspension spans, while the east spans used a steel cantilever truss design and simple steel truss spans. This double-deck bridge served the Bay Area well until 1989. In that year, the magnitude 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The resulting interruption to service across the bay demonstrated the vital role this bridge plays in the economic and life safety activities of the Bay Area. The project owner, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), determined that the safest, most cost-effective solution was a total bridge replacement. The Engineer-of-Record, T.Y. Lin International/ Moffatt & Nichol Joint Venture, working closely with Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the California Transportation Commission (CTC), was charged with developing a comprehensive design strategy that met the project’s stringent criteria for seismic safety. These criteria included the new bridge’s designation as a regional Lifeline Structure that must open to emergency traffic shortly after the occurrence of a 1,500-year return period earthquake"

The Central Subway will extend the recently completed 8.2-km long Third Street Light Rail line another 2.7 km north through the Union Square shopping district to Chinatown with a concourse-to-concourse connection to the Powell Street BART Station. One mined and two cut-and-cover subway stations are planned. Particular challenges include: tunneling under existing tunnels; variable ground conditions ranging from saturated alluvium to fractured bedrock; a congested urban setting and large-span caverns. This paper gives an overview of the project as it stands midway through the preliminary engineering stage along with a discussion of the rationale and design approaches that are being used to address the construction challenges of restoring light rail service in the most densely developed areas of San Francisco.

On Aug. 5, the main shaft of the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó in Chile?s Atacama Region collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped more than 624 m (2,000 ft) beneath the earth?s surface.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

The San Vicente Tunnel Project is an 11-mile water tunnel constructed for the San Diego County Water Authority. One of the many challenges of the project included tunneling a 22,000-foot single-heading tunnel on the western half of the job in varying geology using a 3.66m (12ft) diameter open shield excavator or ?digger shield.? This paper will discuss the design considerations for the temporary liner, the tunneling, and ancillary equipment. It will also highlight the challenges faced while mining this geology, explain the methods implemented to drive this section of tunnel, and discuss the experiences while performing mechanized tunneling in an extensive and varied San Diego geology.
