The San Vicente to 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline?Tunnel project is a raw water conveyance tunnel linking the San Vicente Reservoir (SVR) to the 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline via Rancho Penasquitos Pressure Control Facility (RPPCF). This 58,230 lf long tunnel will be 8.5? final ID, and has four points of construction access. The job is classified into 6 Reaches of tunnel, identified by the dominant geology within the reach. This paper will focus on Reach 3, specifically the measures necessary to drill and blast a 550 lineal foot section of granitic rock tunnel immediately in front of an open face digger shield.

Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains eight miles north of the City of Santa Cruz and inland from the coast, lies a typical beach sand consisting of quartz and feldspar grains of the Santa Harguerita formation of the middle tertiary age, Reserves of over twenty-five million tons of this sand form the deposit presently being harvested by Pacific Cement & Aggregates, a Division of Lone Star Cement Corporation. The deposit ranges from 350 to 700 feet above sea level and varies from two percent passing a 200 mesh screen to ten percent retained on a ¼ inch screen (see Figure '#l) In 1929 the first sand plant went into operation at this site. It was replaced by a new plant in 1937. This plant continued operation until the middle of 1965 when replaced by the modern plant described in this paper.

Melbourne Water Corporation, through the Pipelines Alliance, has commenced construction of a new drainage pipeline to provide additional flood protection within the Sandgate Avenue Main Drain catchment, in order to mitigate against the risk of flooding of Frankston’s central activity district (CAD).The project involves the construction of a 1550 m long, 2.5 m internal diameter tunnel, commencing upstream at the Monash University Peninsula Campus and traversing approximately west to the outlet located at Kananook Creek. The tunnel was excavated by a dual slurry-earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM), with the depth to tunnel crown ranging from 0.7 m to 14 m below the natural surface level. The TBM navigated 500 m radius curves, with a maximum drive length of 608 m. The tunnel lining consists of 2.5 m internal diameter, 250 mm thick reinforced concrete jacking pipe.The geotechnical conditions along the tunnel alignment consisted of mixed face ground conditions, predominately clay, with clayey sand and sandy clay and some sand deposits near Kananook Creek.This paper presents the challenges associated with the operation of the slurry separation plant during tunnel construction. In particular, the paper focuses the impact of slurry separation on tunnel advance rates, the lessons learnt during construction with regards to slurry separation and on the decision to adopt a dual slurry-earth pressure balance shield TBM. In addition this paper highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of the slurry separation requirements on a slurry TBM project prior to selecting the necessary plant.

An excavation, within which a tunnel is sunk as a part of the Centraal Station underground station (platform section) of the Noord/Zuidlijn ('North/South Line'), is to be created beneath the Amsterdam Centraal ('Amsterdam Central') station. The section beneath Amsterdam Centraal Station is characterised by the application of a particular technology in the form of, inter alia, the so-called 'sandwich wall'. This is a composite wall consisting of two rows of Tubex piles with a body of jetgrout columns in-between. This wall acts both as an excavation support wall and also provides vertical bearing. The installation of the wall, including both Tubex piles and jetgrout columns, within these specific conditions (limited height, sensitive historical building), within the design requirements set in terms of construction tolerance and water and soil retention, may be regarded as being a pioneering achievement. The environmental constraints are that the trains should continue to run, the inconvenience to passengers should be kept to a minimum and the historic station should not suffer any damage. Because of the complexity of the working conditions, the project is being overseen by a steering group of experts in the specified construction processes. In order to manage the project risks, jet grouting trials were initially carried out, in order to highlight and control execution problems; the practicability of the design is then tested. Work commenced on the sandwich wall in 2003, when the wooden piles were extracted at the locations where the sandwich wall was to be constructed; in 2004, the steel Tubex piles for the southern wall sections were installed. From May 2005, the construction of the sandwich wall got under way; in addition to the described process supervision, an extensive measuring programme was established, so that the process could be adjusted as necessary and the quality of the finished product determined. This applied to both individual columns and for the end product, the sandwich wall. The measurement results were processed for each column, interpreted and the effect on the work still to be conducted was assessed for each future column. Preventative and corrective measures were, if necessary, taken in order to control or counteract the measured defect. In addition to the process-oriented and qualitative measurements, various independent measurement systems at the station building served as a further control in order to prevent damage to the building.

The respect of EPB reference pressure during TBM advance and hyperbaric activities, the complete and effective filling of the annular gap between tunnel lining extrados and the excavation section and a well organized monitoring system, to control surface settlements and ground distortion, are items of utmost importance in EPB tunnelling process. The paper describes how these concepts have been applied while excavating in the difficult underground conditions found at Sao Paulo (Brazil) during the execution of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 4-Lot 1. In this project, the annular gap has been filled by two components type, cement grouting. The back feed of the extensive monitoring campaign carried out to check the surface settlements during the excavation and hyperbaric maintenance operations will also be described in the paper.

"The Line 5 Extension, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transportation by Sao Paulo’s state government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major Metro lines and stations; all currently in operation. The total extension of the line is 11 km (6.8 mi), and includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station, one of the new stations due to be open and operating in 2016, has a unique geometry of five secant shafts.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One slurry wall, along the Santo Amaro Avenue, was to contain the contamination plumes, and another was for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall that reduced the construction time of the shafts by half, allowing the contractor to meet the construction schedule. This solution also avoided dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a hydromill was used in such a situation in Brazil. The hydromill, by overcutting the panels, increased the quality of the joints, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The hydromill also created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of the contaminated plumes.The GeologyLocal geology is composed of a superficial Quaternary soil, basically soft organic clays and sands and gravels. From the depth of 8 m (26 ft) until 18 m (59 ft), geology is composed by tertiary medium compact sand with thin silt-clay layers. From 18 m (59 ft) down, there are alternations between compact silt-sands layers with very hard clays layers. Each is approximately 5 to 10 m (16.4 ft to 33 ft) thick.The Initial Basic DesignThe original basic design of the Brooklin Station was to be constructed from five 40 m (131 ft) diameter intersecting circular shafts, all in a line along the axis of the Metro tunnel, in 555 days. In the excavation sequence, the odd shafts were first excavated, waterproofed and had part of their inside cast-in-place structure built before the even shafts were excavated. During the excavation of the even shafts, part of the odd shaft’s support was demolished and connected with the even support. A 0.8 m (2.6 ft) thick plastic slurry wall, acting together with the wire mesh reinforced shotcrete support, ensured the excavation stability around the five shafts."

"INTRODUCTION The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is a new rail line being constructed by the MTR Corporation for the Government of Hong Kong to cater for the growing passenger demand between the North-East New Territories and the urban areas of the city. Contract 1103, which will provide the 4 km of running tunnels between the new Hin Keng and Diamond Hill Stations, was tendered in a design-build framework and awarded to Vinci Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) in October 2012, with Arup as Vinci’s lead designer. One of the most challenging pieces of work on the contract involved the construction of 133m of SEM mined tunnel on the northern end of the project. The Northern Mined Section (NMS) is an undrained, twin-track, single bore profile, broken out through the southern pipe pile wall of the Hin Keng Station cut-and-cover box, Figure 1. The tunnel has maximum excavated dimensions of 14.5m span x 12m height, with track spacing of 6.175m. The general excavation sequence consisted of 3 stages; a 6m high top heading (73.1m2), followed by bench (27.3m2), and invert (26.7m2). A risk-based approach to the design was taken given the large variation in rock level, cover, and an active stream course above tunnel crown. Ultimately, six different temporary support types were utilized in order to optimize the construction process through continually changing ground while maintaining a safe and stable excavation. Three main support types were developed during the initial design phase, along with a “contingency” case, which utilized a partial heading excavation sequence and enhanced face support. The purpose of the contingency support type was to have a robust, engineered design available for immediate implementation should unexpected ground behavior develop, leading to the breaching of instrumentation trigger levels. This support type was never implemented on site. Drill- and-blast tunneling commenced once 6m of rock cover was verified through forward probing. A robust instrumentation and monitoring scheme provided valuable data throughout excavation and the means to carry out a geotechnical back-analysis of the ground behavior and support performance."

"Introduction The Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a provincial crown corporation which operates under a mandate to supply all customers within Saskatchewan with electricity and natural gas. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation operates two coal mines within the province of Saskatchewan. The Souris Valley Mine is located a few miles south of the city of Estevan and produces approximately 300 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped about four kilometres by truck and burned at the 882 MW Boundary Dam Power Station, also owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The Poplar River Mine is located just south-west of the town of Coronach, Saskatchewan which is some 190 kilo metres west of Estevan. This mine produces approximately 1 675 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped seven miles by rail to the Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Power Station. The Poplar River Mine is the sole sup plier of fuel to the Poplar River Power Station, which generates some 300 MW of electrical power. A second 300 MW unit is due to be commissioned at the Poplar River Power Station in mid-1983 and the Poplar River Mine will have doubled its capacity to approximately 3 350 000 Mg per year by that time: Souris Valley Mine Geology The Souris Valley Mine extracts lignite from the Estevan seam of the Ravenscrag Formation. This formation is of Tertiary age and was deposited during the Paleocene Epoch. The Ravenscrag Formation outcrops throughout southern Saskatachewan and all coal mined in the province occurs in this formation. Ravenscrag sediments are deltaic in origin and are composed of a series of fine sands, silts, clay and lignite deposits."

"This paper presents the geographic and geological setting of Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Mine in south-central Saskatchewan, about 8 miles from the U.S. border. Generally the mine, which is being expanded to four million tons per year, is in an extremely disturbed geological area with severe dewatering problems. The lignite coal, which is strip mined, is supplied directly to an electric power generating station by means of a 7-mile unit-train private railroad.A number of unique reclamation and socio-economic problems were encountered because of the proximity to the U.S. border and because of the lack of experience of the regulatory authorities in projects of this kind. These are described in some detail, as well as the performance of one of the largest draglines in Canada. The province's lignite resources lie mainly in the south, extensions of the much larger deposits in Montana and North Dakota. Because of planned additional capacity, conventional steam power generation will probably remain as the dominant resource usage for many decades. Conversion of coal to other energy forms is receiving emphasis and in the future will compete with steam power generation in terms of quantities used.Economic deposits, minable by present-day technology, have been generally defined. Because a large percentage of the total lignite resource is in seams containing multiple partings, future extraction will become much more difficult and capital intensive.Increased public involvement will ensure that the impacts of future coal mining and usage operations are compatible with environmental and social objectives.

Over the last 15 years working in the mining, construction and extractive industries, one of the areas that has always concerned and at the same time drawn the author to it is the application of drilling and blasting in the underground development mining and civil construction tunnelling fields. In that time, the author has come across many drives and tunnels that are larger than design or badly damaged in the perimeter or both. When the question is asked as to why this is the case, the reply is generally æthatÆs the way it is and always has beenÆ. Sometimes it is blamed on bad ground, bad drilling, bad explosives, bad initiation or just plain bad. Most operators build a dilution factor into development and tunneling costs as an acceptance of overbreak and similarly pattern bolt everything to overcome excessive perimeter damage. This paper will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries behind perimeter drilling and blasting in underground drives and tunnels and discuss methods to reduce overbreak and therefore reduce costly dilution and to minimise perimeter damage which in turn will allow more cost-effective ground support. It should not be assumed that better drilling and blasting alone would automatically allow an operation to reduce ground support. The operator must still æreadÆ the ground and its characteristics in order to ensure sufficient ground support is placed to allow the operation to progress safely. This paper will not go into the intricacies of bolting, meshing, shotcreting, concreting and other ground support, but it will use indicative costs for the primary areas of drilling, explosives, excavation and labor to show the magnitude of cost-efficiencies which can be obtained through improved drilling and blasting applications. Drill and blast remains the most flexible and cost-effective method of underground excavation as long as it is applied safely and effectively.

San Antonio has experienced sustained growth for decades, putting increased pressure on existing wastewater infrastructure. In June 2013, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) reached a Consent Decree agreement that requires significant improvements to the wastewater system over a 10-year period to reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows. One of the critical projects was the W-6 Upper Segment Tunnel project to reduce sanitary sewer overflows on an existing sewer main running through Lackland Airforce Base. The replacement project consisted of a new tunnel nearly 29,000 LF of primarily 104" FRP. The project also includes nine shafts and multiple trenchless crossings to make near surface connections to the new works.

This paper presents the design and construction approach adopted for the widening and stabilisation of the existing decline tunnel forming part of the Scenic Railway Upgrade project at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The overall upgrade project included new trains and track, rebuilding of the top and bottom station and installation of a new winch and control system. All the works were undertaken over an eight-month period between August 2012 and April 2013 as part of a $30 M upgrade of the railway.The railway is the steepest cable-driven line in the world at a maximum of 52° extending over 350 m and descending from the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. The track was built in the 1880s for coal haulage and is recognised as a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The tunnel section extends for about 120 m at the start of the decline and is about 3.5 m wide and 3.5 m high. The tunnel was excavated principally within medium to high strength Banks Wall sandstone and given that the widening only involved about 200 mm of trimming of the crown and sidewall this aspect of the work was not a critical support issue, except at the upslope portal. The tunnel crown however is entirely intersected by a major near vertical shear zone which presented significant challenges for the tunnel stabilisation works.Three-dimensional laser survey scanning was used for definition of the tunnel clearance envelope for the widening, and also to subdivide the tunnel into various geotechnical sections to assist in support design. Specifically oriented rock bolts extending beyond the shear zone into stable rock were used together with mesh, shotcrete and extensive strip drains and flushing points for drainage of the shear zone.Unique aspects of this project were included into the specifications and work methods. This included construction of a mobile working platform for tunnel works, the use of dry shotcrete application, difficult access for rock bolting and limiting vibration during the tunnel trimming works due to the risks associated with crown instability. The works also took into consideration particular safety constraints/work exclusion areas to address the risk of detachment of rock which could mobilise downslope to the track area below. This was required because other works were in progress such as micro-piling and bottom platform works which were being undertaken concurrently with the tunnel work.CITATION:Rosin, S G and Hughes, A, 2014. It is a time-honored saying in the anthracite region that " under the conglomerate there is no coal;" and the adage is generally reckoned a sure guide in coal-exploration. Yet there are many places where conglomerate, even coarse conglomerate, occurs above important coal beds, and, among others, above the great Mammoth bed. One of the most striking of such occurrences is on the Shippen and Wetherill tract, half a dozen miles west of Tamaqua; and it illustrates remarkably the disastrous effect of a too unquestioning blind confidence in the sweeping literal truth of a broad generalization. Here there is a conspicuous crag formed by a twenty-foot bed of egg-conglomerate, dipping 60 degrees southerly, and jutting out boldly at the western end of a hill, where it is cut through by the small stream of Little Creek. The hill runs eastward for half a mile, with occasional exposures of pebbly rock along the western half of the crest. The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. "In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

I went to the University of Michigan, where I got an A.B. degree in 1902; then to the Michigan College of Mines at Houghton, graduating from there in 1904 with a B.S. and an E.M. What was your first job in the mining industry, Mr. Turner, and what were you paid? In the summer of 1902, 1 was a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, working under Israel C. Russell, professor of geology at the University of Michigan, who incidentally, had just returned from an expedition to study the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pelee, on Martinique. I was paid $60 a month and found; in addition to doing geologic and hydrographic work, I cooked many of the meals for a party of four, and wrangled four horses. I slept for four months under the stars, without a tent.

An overview of the scope and ramifications of scrap recycling in the Nigerian metallurgical industries has been presented in this paper. The modern state-of-the-art processing techniques and the operational strategies employed in the recycling plants are discussed. Optimization techniques for cost effective recycling operations are highlighted. As new units within existing metallurgical plants and new metal working plants approach commercial operations, expansion of existing recycling plants and the emergence of new ones have been showing to hold the key to their profitability from the raw material standpoint. The present economic predicament of the entire industrial sub-sector, lack of sufficient foreign exchange to procure new machineries and the emergence of a maintenance culture have triggered a phenomenal increase in the number of spin-off industries which depend on metal recycling activities. This, it is argued, widens the horizon for scrap processing/recycling.
