In the world of tunneling the glamour is in the large diameter, long tunnels, but perhaps the number of projects for small diameter and short length tunnels are greater and generally have higher risk factors. Reasons for these higher risks include both the ?boiler plate? contract provisions used on these types of contracts, the technical specifications related to the tunnel work (versus the pipeline construction), the bid practices including measurement and payment and the construction. This paper reviews and comments on some of the key issues the authors have observed in recent major pipe-line projects that involve a small percentage of tunneling footage of the total contract.

Construction of a new transportation link frequently requires crossing under an existing highway or railroad. Although traffic diversions may permit a cut and cover structure to be built, ‘zero impact’ tunnel solutions are becoming increasingly popular. The vertical clearance between the new tunnel structure and the existing highway or tracks may be very low; sometimes less than two meters. This leaves little room for error since any ground loss can rapidly translate into surface settlement. Problems can be avoided by maintaining the stability of the tunnel face and by minimizing ground movement around the tunnel lining. This paper examines construction methods that have been used to construct short tunnels with shallow cover, and highlights factors to be considered for future projects.

The Henderson mine has more than 20 years experience and has placed a combined total of more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cy) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years the mine has used a variety of equipment for placing concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Henderson has recently received a state of the art wet shotcrete placer, automated its batch plant, fabricated a mobile concrete form jumbo and is soon to receive a new concrete transport truck.

For tunnels with low overburden, the shotcrete lining is the main element of ground support, which is why shotcrete behavior is of prime importance. Following its application, shotcrete not only gains strength and stiffness with time but—if loaded at an early stage—it is also subject to creep which in turn leads to stress relaxation. For two-dimensional FE calculations, a computational modulus of elasticity of shotcrete is to be used. Based on parameter studies it was found that the modulus of elasticity of shotcrete depends on both shotcrete mix and ground behavior. While the Young’s Modulus used for young shotcrete may range from 1,000 to 7,000 MPa, the Young’s Modulus used for hardened shotcrete is best represented by a value of 15,000 MPa.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

In Munich's peculiar hydrogeological conditions (water bearing sand strata between layers of impermeable clay, silt or marl) are proper functioning groundwater lowering methods of decisive importance for underground construc- tion. Shield tunnelling with compressed air has al- ready proved to be successful. In view of growing application of shotcrete tunnelling it was obvious to consider the use of compressed air even here. After a preliminary research-project the first subway section "shotcrete under compressed air" was 1979 awarded in Munich and since that time five sections have been awarded, respectively completed. On the basis of the experiences meanwhile obtained reports will be given stating the frame conditions in which this new construction method can be applied. The tunnels consist of two shells. The outer ist driven by shotcrete under compressed air. In order to keep the air overpressure low, the groundwater often is previously detensioned or partially lowered. The inner shell of watertight concrete is built under atmosperic pressure.

Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

THE second session on geophysical prospecting at the February meeting of the Institute was a discussion of the mining law and the bearing of the new method of search on location of claims and assessment work thereon. Allen H. Rogers was chairman of the meeting, which he opened by reviewing the present law and the proposed changes. W. R. Ingalls commented (by letter) on the Arentz bill, as introduced into the House of Representatives in 1921 and the need for revision of the present mining law. L. W. Douglas explained (by letter) the bill that he introduced and which has been passed by the House. SAMUEL S. ARENTZ, Nevada: It is my opinion that if the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is to sell this proposition to the people in the West, they have to sell it to the lawyers, because, after all, they are heard loudly when it comes to speaking in Congress. One man tells the other, "This thing is a vicious piece of legislation"; it might not be, but they will pass it on if it affects them. If the Institute would impress on the people affected that we need a re-codification of the mining law and that such is necessary along certain lines; that things have changed during the past decade or two, so today instead of doing our prospecting alone through the sinking of a shaft, through a discovery that may be seen, we are now moving on to more modern means of discovery through geophysics, through the churn-drill, through geology, through geological inference, I think we could get somewhere.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

The mining district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line—the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. • The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. History The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in. the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties. A period of development followed in which the majority of the present producing mines were opened. The Elkoro Mines Co. acquired a number of claims in 1915 and started work on the present mill in 1917. Since that time other properties have been taken over until this company is by far the largest operator in the district. INTRODUCTION The Idarado mine lies high in the San Juan Moun¬tains on the divide between the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers and consists of a consolidation of a number of old and prominent mining properties through which course some famous and very produc¬tive veins. Among the better known are the Smuggler, Tomboy, Montana-Argentine, Black Bear, Liberty Bell, Virginius, Flat, Barstow, and Japan, as well as many others. Most of these veins have been extensively mined over the past century and in the last three decades the Montana-Argentine and Black Bear veins have been the backbone of the Idarado mine; therefore, the descrip¬tion of the veins is limited to them. Access to the mine is through either the Treasury tunnel, whose portal is below Red Mountain Pass on US Highway 550 at an elevation of 3244 m (10,643 ft), or the Mill Level tunnel entrance 3.2 km (2 miles) east of Telluride, CO, at an elevation of 2761 m (9060 ft). The Treasury tunnel intersects the Black Bear vein 2643 m (8670 ft) from the portal and the Mill Level tunnel intersects the Argentine vein 2179 m (7150 ft) from the portal. Mining is by shrinkage stoping from slusher sublevels. The size of the scope blocks varies somewhat, but the standard size is 67 to 76 m (220 to 250 ft) long and 61 to 76 m (200 to 250 ft) high. The mine ranks either first or second in Colorado in yearly production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. It is 9.6 km (6 miles) from the Red Mountain plant to the Pandora plant, via interconnecting drifts and raises. There are engineering offices at both plants as a matter of convenience. The Red Mountain plant in¬cludes the company general offices, warehouse, carpen¬ter and machine shops, and mine change room. The Pandora plant consists of the mill and assay office, ma¬chine shops, and mine change room. The flotation mill has a capacity of 1632 t/d (1800 stpd), making a bul¬lion product and separate concentrates of lead, copper, and zinc. HISTORY OF THE MINE The Montana-Argentine vein was first extensively worked by the Tomboy Gold Mines Co., Ltd., a British concern. This company mined the stoped areas above the Ophir level between 1910 and the late 1920s and most of the stoped areas above the 2100 level between 1900 and the late 1920s. Gold was the principal ore metal mined. The area between the Revenue and Ophir levels was mined chiefly by the Revenue Mines Co. between 1900 and 1910. The ore was worked from the Revenue tun¬nel, which portals in Canyon Creek. Gold and silver were the chief metals recovered. The stopes between the 1700 and Revenue levels, as well as some higher stopes, were mined by Telluride Mines Inc. during the 1940s. The Mill Level tunnel was driven by that company from 1945 to 1948. Lead and zinc then became economically more important than the precious metals. In 1953, Idarado purchased Telluride Mines, which merged with the parent company in 1956. The Black Bear vein was first extensively worked by the Black Bear Mining Co. in the 1900s and by the Colorado Superior Mining Co. from about 1914 until snowslides at the mine camp [altitude 3750 m (12,300 ft)] terminated the company's operations in 1924. Leasers operated at intervals until 1934. The Treasury tunnel, formerly the Hammond tunnel, had been started before 1900 and reached the 1646-m (5400-ft) mark early in the 1900s, at which time activity lagged until the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, Idarado extended the Treasury tunnel from its heading at 1646 m (5400 ft) to the Black Bear vein and established a raise connec¬tion with the 600 level, the lowest level in the old mine. Since completion of initial work in the mid-1940s, systematic development of the mine, both in the driv¬ing of new headings and the utilization of older open¬ings, has resulted in the present extensive network of workings. GEOLOGY Introduction The oldest rocks of the area are the Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Uncompahgre formation which are massive quartzites, some phyllites and slates, and dolomitic or limestone beds. West-dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata lie on the Uncompahgre formation. These units are separated by a major angular uncomformity from overlying, essentially horizontal, Tertiary formations that include the basal Telluride conglomerate and several thousand feet of overlying volcanic rock. Intrusive rocks, mostly Tertiary in age, are common in the area, and are in the form of dikes, stocks, and sills. Dikes are very closely associated with some of the ore veins (Mayer). Description of Veins The Black Bear and Argentine veins range from 0.6 to 7.6 m (2 to 25 ft) in width, but in most places are 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) wide. They vary in character from a well-defined tabular structure between sharp "frozen" walls, or gouge seams, to an irregular zone of quartz and quartz-sulfide stringers. Many gouge seams within the veins make the veins blocky and loose. Common gangue minerals in the veins include quartz, pyrite, rhodonite, chlorite, sericite, clay minerals, epidote, calcite, adularia, rhodocrosite, fluorite, and specularite. Quartz constitutes 60 to 70% of the veins and varies widely in character, ranging in color from clear through white, gray, and green, to amethyst. Chlorite, sericite, the clay minerals, and fine-grained quartz are common alteration products of the vein walls and of wall rock fragments in the veins. Near-field and close-in blasting can be safe and efficient, near engineered structures, if the dynamic reaction of structural members to blasting vibrations are considered. Safe particle velocity criteria can be derived from allowable safe static flexural deflections and critical frequencies. Control of close-in blasting can be accomplished using low-pass filtering of the particle velocity signal at the critical frequency. The CETE Mediterranee laboratory at Aix-en-Provence, France, a branch of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges has -pioneered this approach and successfully applied it to major road cuts and tunnels in built-up areas, as well as a major powerhouse expansion project in Africa. This approach is presently being used for a spillway rehabilitation project in Quebec, Canada. This paper exposes- the theoretical aspects and gives case histories of its use. The SCS-15 an automated, peak reading, data acquisition device is described.

The stability of longwall chain pillars depends not only on the mechanical properties of coal and surrounding rocks, but also geological and mining conditions. In order to evaluate the effects of each, variable, the orthogonal experiment design was employed in this study for significance analysis. The study concluded that the stability of longwall chain pillars is mainly controlled by the ratio of pillar stress to pillar strength, the ratio of Young's moduluds of the roof to coal and floor to coal, entry width, pillar width and the internal friction angle of coal. Additionally, horizontal stress, panel width and mining height also play a significant role.

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. This report describes actions taken to control silica dust at the Yucca Mountain Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), a tunnel located in Southern Nevada that is part of a scientific program to determine site suitability for a potential nuclear waste repository. The rock is a volcanic tuff containing significant percentages of both quartz and cristobalite. Water use for dust control was limited because of scientific test requirements. A major dust reduction was achieved with an intermediate air cleaning station located on a rear deck of the TBM trailing gear.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

Kyanite. andalusite, and sillimanite are anhydrous aluminum silicate minerals, and they have the same chemical formula, Al2SiO3. Dumortierite and topaz are also classified as aluminum silicates although they contain boron and fluorine respectively. Mullite (a rare mineral named for its discovery site, the Scottish island of Mull) is produced when kyanite, andalusite, or sillimanite are heated. Synthetic mullite, also classified as an aluminum silicate, is formed by melting alumina and silica, bauxite, and kaolin or alumina, kaolin, and kyanite, depending on the type of synthetic mullite desired. These materials are either sintered in rotary, periodic, or tunnel kilns, or fused in an electric arc furnace. The world's largest producer of kyanite is the United States. Domestic kyanite is presently produced from one company at two sites in Virginia; Kyanite Mining Corporation mines kyanite from Willis Mountain and adjacent East Ridge in Buckingham County in the central Piedmont province of Virginia. Internationally, kymite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, Sweden, and Zimbabwe; the former USSR also produces kyanite (Fig. 1). Andalusite is produced by Piedmont Minerals Company, Inc. in the Piedmont province near Hillsborough, NC. Andalusite is also produced in France, India, the Republic of South Africa, and Spain (Fig. 1). Sillimanite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Spain, and the Republic of South Africa; the former USSR is also thought to be a major producer (Fig. 1). Some of the countries produce only for domestic use. Synthetic mullite, made by sintering and by electric arc fusion, is produced by Mulcoa (Mullite Company of America) in Andersonville, GA, and by Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY. Annual world production of kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, and synthetic mullite is approximately 672 727 tons (Potter, 1988). GEOLOGY Mineralogy Kyanite is a blue to light-green, triclinic mineral that occurs in long, thin-bladed crystals and crystalline aggregates in gneiss, schist, and pegmatites. The mineral has a hardness of 5 parallel to the long axis of the crystal and a hardness of 7 across the crystal. Andalusite is a yellow, brown, green, or red orthorhombic mineral that occurs in thick, almost square prisms in schist, gneiss, and hornfels. Gem quality andalusite exhibits a strong pleochroism; brownish-green in one direction and brownish-red perpendicular to it. Andalusite also occurs in placer concentrations where it has weathered out of rock. Sillimanite is a brown, pale-green, gray, or white orthorhombic mineral that occurs in long, slender, needlelike crystals in schist and gneiss. Chemical and Physical Properties Chemical and physical properties of kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite are noted in Table 1. Kyanite is the only mineral that irreversibly expands when heated (calcined to produce mullite) and may offset the shrinkage of most ceramic or refractory ingredients when heated.

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. The need for a basic method for selecting explosives based on rock mass or intact rock properties for mining and construction arises from the limited consideration given to these factors when choosing among products and also an implicit overestimation of the explosive power to fragment the rock. This study highlights the importance of evaluating different properties such as rock strength, deformation, fracturing, detonation velocity and energy release when selecting explosives. The concept of characteristic impedance, which considers rock strength against shock waves generated by explosive detonation, is introduced. Understanding this concept is crucial for assessing explosive behavior according to various rock types. The study concludes with a practical guide table that categorizes rock properties and provides recommendations for selecting explosives based on rock mass and rock properties. However, it is important to consider other relevant factors, such as the presence of water or nearby instabilities, which can influence the final choice of explosives.

A simulated rockburst experiment was conducted underground at a deep level gold mine. This was done by means of a large explosion detonated in solid rock close to a tunnel sidewall. The resultant shake-out damage is typical of that associated with a small seismic event in close proximity to a tunnel that is subjected to the estimated field stress, as in this case, of 50 MPa. The experiment involved: ?the design of a blast to mimic a seismic source ?seismic monitoring using a dense seismic array ?high speed video filming ?a study of rock mass conditions (fractures, joints, rock strength etc.) before and after the simulation using mapping and ground penetrating radar ?special investigations to evaluate the mechanism and the magnitude of the damage ?a study of support behaviour under excessive dynamic loading.
