To the casual observer there is probably no simpler appearing operation in the mineral industry than a limestone quarry. It might seem that the entire operation - from the drilling, blasting, and loading of the stone, its transport to a mill for crushing, washing and sizing, to loading into boats, railroad cars, or trucks for delivery to customers - can be comprehended at a glance. But no first impression could be more misleading. It is one of the purposes of this presentation to sketch the broad outlines of the extensive limestone industry in the United States which, measured in terms of volume of production since the end of World War II, has grown almost 300 per cent to a national level in 1957 of 384 million net tons.1 Another objective will be to discuss in more detail this industry in the State of Michigan. For this latter purpose, the Michigan Limestone Division plants at Calcite and at Cedarville will be used as examples. These descriptions will, we believe, show that the limestone business has complexities to match its size.

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

An analysis of the design of medium to hard rock tunneling machines is presented. The developed equations are used to compare performances and machine requirements using kerf and fixed pick cutters to bore a given rock. With the use of pick cutters, required thrusts can be greatly reduced and still achieve the same boring rate as with present day tooth or kerf cutters. It appears that the cutting coefficient, which for most boring machines is of the order of 0.1, should be increased to one or larger to facilitate rock removal by cutting rather than grinding. The depth of cut and the indexing distance should be greatly increased to make use of inherent rock weakness.

The double track railway tunnel, called the Second Shirasaka Tunnel is being constructed under the supervision of Japanese PTational Rail- ways (JNR) in the tertiary soft rock strata in order to speed up the railway transportation. This tunnel (L=1765m), located in a central part of Japan, is excavated by the machine (roadheader), while the adjoining First Shirasaka Tunnel (L=1296m), completed five years ago, was driven by the blasting, and NATM is adopted in both tunnels. The geological features in this region are Neogene Tertiary of Miocene sediments consisted of mudstone, the sandy mudstone and the alter- ation of these rocks, having a squeezing be- haviour. And the geological structure is as complicated as some anticline and syncline structures, large or small scale exist, and as a lot of faults are found. The machine excavation manner using road- header is adopted in this tunnel to minimize the effect of excavation because there is a possibility of the occurrence of landslide due to the tunnel excavation, and also because local inhabitants reside on the ground surface.

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines-in cooperation with other agencies-has been making investigations and compiling and publishing reports and statistics on accidents in the various branches of the mineral industry.4 Its assistance has been enlisted also in health, safety, and ventilation problems' incident to the driving of many large tunnels in the United States in recent years. As part of this work the Bureau has compiled considerable statistical and other information on accident experience in the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry. It has always been difficult to obtain up-to-date information on tunneling methods and tunnel accidents. Published accounts of tun¬nel construction furnish much interesting material of engineering, historical, or fiscal value, but usually little or no attempt is made to discuss and critically analyze the means taken to preserve the health and life of employees.

Dissemination of technical data on developments in rock-blasting techniques in Sweden initially takes place as personal contacts and contacts between companies. In addition to these informal contacts, contacts occur in Sweden in a somewhat more organized form. There exists an informal working group--the Rock Blasting Committee--which consists of a number of personal representatives from various companies that perform rock blasting on a large scale and from firms manufacturing the equipment that is used. This means that people from both mining and construction companies get together, plus the manufacturers of explosives, drill steel, drilling machines, and loading equipment. This working group has, so far, succeeded very well in ignoring the purely commercial interests of the companies concerned. Cooperation in this form was started in the 1940's when the tungsten-carbide drill steel was invented-the group originally concentrated entirely on the development of that product. Their activities have been broadened since that time and now a meeting is held every year, at which practical experiences are reported. Only in the past five years have subjects relating to blasting procedures to avoid rock damage been treated at such meetings. This, of course, does not mean that such techniques had been neglected previously. It does, however, reflect the fact that practice in this field is still under development. Why do we try to be careful about the rock surfaces? Obviously, it is a question of economic evaluation. An even rock surface provides, in certain cases, the conditions for more favorable maintainance costs later on, greater strength, and a diminished risk of slides. The economic connections in this field, however, are neither simple or clear. A well-controlled blasted rock surface limits the need for concrete when you later build the concrete constructions. In this respect, the connections are all the more clear. In certain situations, such as tunnels for hydroeletric power plants, a good rock surface that is not lined is hydraulically more favorable than a more coarsely blasted surface. THIS paper describes the electrical features of the locomotive now (August, 1962) under construction for Craigmont Mines. Intended for non-specialists, it avoids details of design and calculations interesting to electricians only. The paper is divided into three sections. The first deals very briefly with the mine layout and with operating conditions -existing and expected. Reference is made to economic considerations leading to the selection of the type and size of locomotive, as well as to traction diagrams and the calculations. This material is not included in the paper because of its length and because it does not represent anything new. The second section deals with engineering and economic considerations and shows, in some detail, why the A.C. system was chosen. The third section describes the basic components of the locomotive, including the voltage regulator, the rectifiers, the control arrangement and the filter, and deals with considerations affecting the selection of their rating and design. A concluding sub-section describes, very briefly, the track and trolley details and the power distribution switchgear.

"Argillaceous rock formations, in particular clay shales, are notorious for creating challenges in rock engineering. Due to their generally low hydraulic conductivity and their complete saturation in their natural state at depth, the behavior of clay shales is usually characterized by a strong hydro-mechanical coupling.This paper presents typical pore pressure responses monitored in different underground rock laboratories and explores alternative ways for their interpretation. The underpinning processes and their relevance are identified based on analytical and conceptual numerical models. Pore pressure monitoring data from Opalinus clay at the Mont Terri Underground laboratory, the Boom Clay at the Mol facility and the Callovo-Oxfordian clay in the Meuse/Haute–Marne URL show a similar pore-pressure response associated with stress changes accompanying tunnel construction although the tunnels were built in different rock types, at different locations, and under different in-situ conditions.The numerical analyses in this study shows that the pore pressure response around an excavation in low permeable clay shales may have different explanations. Pore pressure drops observed in the tunnel near field can theoretically be explained by both, a pure elastic response in an isotropic or anisotropic rock mass with an anisotropic stress state, or a inelastic response and related dilatancy. However, a comparison between the numerical models and the in-situ measurements revealed that the latter is more likely. This conclusion is justified by the observation that pore pressure drops occur significantly ahead of the tunnel face which is not the case in elastic numerical simulations. Pore pressure measurements in the far field, where failure processes are unlikely to occur, can only partly be explained by a linear poroelastic models. The introduction of an anisotropic material plays a key role in reproducing the responses, conceptually."

INTRODUCTION NUMEROUS examples of troubled zones, interfering with the normal development of coal seams, have been cited in the literature. From a geological point of view they can be subdivided into structural and sedimentary troubles. Of the latter type, wash-outs are usually the most bothersome. Some years ago, A. A. Thiadens and the author arrived at the conclusion that they represent fossil river-beds. A method of predicting the course of these rivers was developed, which has been successfully applied in the Netherlands coal measures, and more recently by P. Stassen in some of the Belgian coalfields and by the author in the Sydney coalfield. The Sydney coalfield has long .drawn the attention of geologists, and three main periods of systematic geological research may be distinguished. The first period, 1872-1900, is covered by the studies of Ch. Robb and H. Fletcher (32, 10-13) (1). Their detailed sections of the cliffs have lost nothing in value, and are frequently consulted today.

"Damaging seismicity associated with deep faulting in both mining and civil excavations not infrequently occurs without warning, and often before proper mitigation measures have been put into place. Severe squeezing is also a common problem for excavating through deep major faults. While both problematic conditions are difficult to predict and characterize, there is often a need at pre-feasibility and feasibility level to more reliably estimate the possible level of risk posed by such geologic structures. This paper introduces some structural geologic techniques that have potential application for both mining and civil applications for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of problem.INTRODUCTIONEncountering adverse faulting at depth in deep excavations, whether for mining or civil purposes can create serious economic and safety impacts. For deep mines or for deep tunnel projects, measures are available for aiding prediction of the extent of possible influence that large scale faults could create, but these techniques are rarely if ever applied as part of routine site investigation programs, or even as part of risk assessment evaluations. Several well established structural geologic methods of palao-history reconstruction have potential application for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of potential problem by allowing estimates to be made of:• controlling stress orientations that might engender reactivation movement;• principal stress magnitudes that could lead to failure initiation, and• probable mechanisms of fault deformation - brittle (bursting) or plastic (squeezing).This paper explores several structural geological and rockmass characterization techniques that have application for unravelling fault structure of importance to deep engineering projects. Their application for mining or tunnelling purposes is advocated in conjunction with conventional rockmass characterization assessment approaches using GSI, RMR and/or Q to aid early recognition and definition of potential adverse ground condition behaviour associated with intersection of significant faulting at depth."

THE decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralateral rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co.

THE ADVENT of mining at great depth has brought to the fore the question of stresses around mine openings. The many-pronged attack on this problem is certified by the accelerated appearance, in the mining literature, of articles on various topics related to this subject (1). Whereas it may be agreed that we, of the mining profession, have fallen woefully behind in research and the development of an understanding of this important facet of the general problem of mining, it must also be accepted that the analysis of the stresses in a mine structure is usually more complex than is the case in the majority of structures encountered and dealt with in civil engineering. Whereas homogeneity and isotropy are readily acceptable for most metals, such properties are but crudely approximated in rocks. Whereas the external loads on a structure in civil engineering may be readily determined, those on a mining structure are subject to ?conjecture. Whereas the limits of the structure may readily be defined in civil engineering, the boundaries of the mining structure are, in most cases, indeterminate, and subject to intelligent guesswork, at best.

"Ground improvement by the deep dry mixing (DDM) method is used in Norway since the late 1970's. A brief review is given of the Norwegian guideline for ground improvement with DDM issued in 2012, but focus is on practical examples and experiences related to improving the stability of excavations and natural slopes in soft clays. Two examples deal with experiences from 10 to 18 m deep excavations in soft and partly highly sensitive clays, where DDM panels and block stabilization were used to both give sufficient stability against bottom heave and to limit lateral wall displacements. A third case deals with improving the stability of a natural slope in quick clay by installing DDM panels near the crest of the slope. To limit disturbance and excess pore pressures generated during the DDM works, vertical drains were installed in advance in between the DDM panels. This ensured that the excess pore pressures generated by the DDM works (up to 150 kPA) dissipated quickly, which was instrumental to avoid triggering a landslide during the stabilizing works.INTRODUCTIONThe lime column (LC) method developed in Sweden and Japan in the mid 1970's (e.g. Broms and Boman, 1977). Since then, there have been significant developments in Scandinavia and around the world in terms of rigs, mixing machinery and tools, and type of binders used. The method, presently named the ""Dry Deep Mixing"" (DDM) method in contrast to the wet deep mixing methods (WDM) that also have developed significantly over the past decades, e.g. Kitazume and Terashi (2013). The first application of the DDM method in Norway was in the late 1970's to improve the stability of an excavation in quick-clay, then using only lime as binder. Most DDM applications in Norway have also thereafter been to improve the stability of cuts, supported excavations or natural slopes in soft clays. The Norwegian Geotechnical Society (2012) issued in 2012 “Guidelines for design of ground improvement with DDM methods"". The following highlights design issues dealt with. The paper focuses however, on some practical cases where DDM has been used to improve stability of deep excavations and a natural slope in soft and partly highly sensitive clays."

In the September issue of the Bulletin, 1923, there is a paper by J. A. H. Church on "The Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines", which is more or less a general discussion of the subject. Mr. Church gives a list of mine fires which have occurred in Alberta. Of the total of thirteen fires, six are attributed to spontaneous combustion. Of these six fires, it will be noted that five are in thick pitching seams. These fires occurred in the following mines during the years shown, at Frank in 1909; at Lovett in 1916; at Cadomin in 1920; at Yellowhead in 1922, and at Cadomin in 1923. Every one of these fires has occurred, as Mr. Church points out, in a seam of over 12 feet in thickness, and furthermore not one of these fires has been extinguished, although in every case large sums of money were expended and considerable risks . taken in fire fighting. Now it is quite evident from these facts that mines working seams of this nature are faced with a very grave danger and it behooves us to study the matter and endeavor to arrive at some practical method of preventing the loss of our coal mines from this cause.

AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. The successful demonstration of a precast segmented concrete liner in the Lexington Market Section of the Baltimore Regional Rapid Transit System (BRRTS) is an important step forward in our continuing efforts to control tunneling costs in the USA. In addition to its contribution to specific savings in future tunnels, this demonstration project has taught other lessons about the U.S. tunneling industry and about the process of "mainlining" new and improved technology into that industry. This paper will present an overview of the Lexington Market Demonstration Project from its beginnings to the present time. In addition, it will discuss other implications which have an important bearing on the extent to which tunnels will be used in future transportation systems in the USA. THE HISTORY Precast segmented concrete tunnel liners are not new. An unbolted version was reportedly used in New York City in the 1930's. The modern bolted configuration has been in use in foreign countries for more than 15 years. Indeed, consideration of the use of precast bolted segments below the water table in the USA dates back to the BART system in San Francisco in the 1960's. At that time, they were evaluated and it was concluded that the state of the art would not allow segments to be precast to the required tolerances. A secondary grinding operation would be required if water-tightness was to be assured, making them economically non-competitive with steel. Based

"The combined use of semiconductor properties and specific flotation characteristics of minerals under different conditions with external influences ensures a possibility for process control and management. This work presents the relations between the volumetric and surface characteristics of minerals and the minerals' flotation ability (flotability), as well as the possibility for the flotability purposeful change. Results from proprietary laboratory and industrial research are presented showing how controlled impacts on minerals and flotation pulp improve flotation technology. Such an approach reveals prospects for the creation of new technologies for the minerals' beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe decrease of the useful components content in the ores, the increasingly complex nature of the raw materials, the increasing energy consumption per the unit of production, and the need to solve the problems related to the environment pollution require solutions different than the existing classical ones. One of the ways to find such solutions is the detailed consideration of the fundamental properties of minerals and, in particular, of minerals having semiconductor properties. The studies of Plaksin et al. (1968), Chanturia and Shafeev (1977), Chanturia and Vigdergauz (2008), Carta et al. (1973), Hoberg and Shneider (1975), Rao et al. (1992) have given an idea of the energy state of the minerals, their flotation ability, and the ways in which this ability can be changed in one or the other direction. The main line in these works is the study and use of the relationship between bulk and flotation properties of minerals. To improve the efficiency of the process, it is also necessary to consider the relationship between the surface properties of the minerals, especially minerals-semiconductors, and their flotation ability.THEORETICAL BACKGROUND IN BRIEFA quantitative estimation of energy changes in a solid phase in the process of flotation may be made by taking in account the changes in the Fermi level. Its position in the forbidden band is an indicator about the direction and the intensity of electron exchange between solid and liquid phases. The Fermi level energy EF enables the estimation of flotability, intensity of needed external impact before flotation, as well as efficiency of the process going on. Quantitative estimation of these processes can be made by means of the flotability coefficient Kf."

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

During the last few years, significant advances continue to have been made in aspects of grouting technologies used for ground treatment in advance of tunnelling. In permeation grouting, fundamental researches have continued into improving the penetrability characteristics of cement-based grouts. The twin advantages of field regrinding normal grouts to reduce cement particle sizes, and incorporating special additives into stable grouts, are now being systematically exploited in major soft ground tunnelling projects in Europe. The methodologies of jet grouting continue to be developed with special attention being paid to qa/qc issues, reducing unit production costs, and improving predictive capabilities for subsequent settlements.
