In April 1982, the contracting Companies, ABV of Sweden and Hoyer-Ellefsen of Norway forming the Consorcio Escandinavo Agoyan, signed the contract for the construction of the civil works of the Agoyan Hydroelectric Project, located in Ecuador, South America. The project is located in the Andes mountain region of Ecuador - one of the smaller countries in this part of the world, located on the Pacific Coast. The contract was signed with the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificación (INECEL), a public institution in charge of the development of all major energy producing projects in Ecuador, for a value of approximately US$ 120,000,000. The contract's main elements are - Concrete gravity dam with a total volume of approximately 210,000 cu m. (60 m wide x 45 m maximum height, 320 m crest). - 2,400 m of headrace tunnel, interior diameter of finished lining 6 m of which 450 m is in-situ tunnel formed in a trench. - Pressure shafts, 132 m long, the lowest meters with sheet lining, the rest with concrete lining. - Powerhouse cavern with an excavated volume of approximately 25,000 c m in which two turbines of 78 MW each will be installed. - Two 140 m tailrace tunnels with a finished diameter (concrete

The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

Heathrow Airport is owned and operated by BAA who are engaged in a major programme of expansion. In order to link the expansion of the airport in the west with the existing central terminal area, a twin bore, 8.8m outside diameter, road tunnel,1280m long, is being constructed. The tunnel drives pass over, with limited clearances, an operating railway tunnel, and pass under, with about one diameter cover, the airport taxiways and aircraft stands. Selection of the machine was heavily influenced by the need to minimise settlement.

The history and development of this property is more or less familiar to nearly everyone connected with the mining industry, so that only a brief outline of the more important facts will be given in this article. In 1916, a small pilot mill was constructed by the British Columbia Copper Company at Copper Mountain, and during 1916 and 1917 test work was conducted to determine the possibility of concentrating the ore and also to work out a suitable flow-sheet. In the spring of 1917, the location of a mill site at Allen by, which is about 8,% miles from Copper Mountain, and near the Similkameen river, was decided on, and the designing of a 2,000-ton plant was then worked out by Bradley, Bruff and Labarthe. Early in 1918, the actual construction of the concentrator began, and, after considerable labour difficulties, it was completed in 1920. During this period of construction, the West Kootenay Power Company ran a 60,000-volt power line over from Greenwood, a distance of 102 miles, and also built a sub-station at Allenby to take care of the mine and mill. The concentrator was started up on October 20th, 1920, and ran until December 11th, 1920, a total of 18,354 tons of ore being milled. The results of this short period of operation were encouraging, but, due to tlie prevailing low price of copper and high wages, it was necessary to shut down until a more favourable time. During the latter half of 1923, some work was done on remodelling the mill. This work continued until January 8th, 1924, when it was suspended.

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

High performance sprayed concrete equipment installed on two 9.4 m diameter hard rock TBMs enabled a continuous sprayed concrete lining for the entire contour in both tunnels to be performed concurrently with the advancing TBMs. Innovative layout of the sprayed concrete arrangements comprised ring beam constructions each with two independent spraying robots. Each of the spraying robots were independently connected to sprayed concrete pumps, as well as a high capacity concrete logistics system on the backup. The mix designs focused on long open-time, excellent pumpability and tough requirements on strength development. The achieved output capacities of the sprayed concrete amounts to an average of 15 m3 per hour. Peak capacities of 24 m3 per hour have been realized.

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

"The amenability theory was developed by Alex Naudts and considers grouting operations as continuous permeability tests where Newtonian test fluid water, is replaced by a cementitious or solution grout. It utilizes hydraulic conductivity and grouting data to establish the amenability coefficient of a particular grout zone. The amenability coefficient reflects the quantity of apertures or voids accessible to the selected grout, divided by the number of apertures accessible to water, in the zone intersected by the grout hole. By calculating, in real time, the effectiveness of a particular grout at the start of a grouting operation, the most appropriate grout to match design criteria can be targeted. By incorporating the amenability theory in every grouting operation, schedule savings and an increase in productivity are typically achieved. Three short case studies illustrate different enhancements in productivity: At an underground mine during the construction of declines, a cement based suspension grouting program was highly ineffective and did not appear to affect the inflow into the mine workings. The amenability theory was utilized to evaluate the grouting program and based on this evaluation, changes to the grouting program were made which allowed the grouting to meet the project’s objectives. On another project, a pre-excavation grouting program implemented during shaft sinking operations utilized the amenability theory to select the most suitable grout for the program. Schedule constraints also influenced the selection of the grout. In the third case history presented, the amenability theory was used to select the grouting sequence of every individual grout hole for a grouting project in a highly heterogeneous soil formation. INTRODUCTION The amenability of a given soil, civil structure or rock formation for a particular grout formulation is a measure of the ability of that grout to permeate the pores, fissures and apertures water will flow through. The amenability coefficient of a particular grout for a specific zone equals the percentage of apertures, pores and fissures accessible by water that are also accessible by grout. Grouting should be viewed as a continuous permeability test, where the apparent in-situ hydraulic conductivity value for a particular grout zone is continuously evaluated, using grout instead of water as test fluid."

The DC Clean Rivers Project is DC Water's ongoing program to capture and treat combined sewer overflows (CSOs) during rainfall before they reach the District waterways. The Anacostia River system was designed to reduce CSOs into the Anacostia River and includes the Blue Plains Tunnel, Anacostia River Tunnel, First Street Tunnel, and Northeast Boundary Tunnel. A portion of the Anacostia River system was commissioned in March 2018 and the final component, the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, was placed in operation on September 15, 2023. This paper provides a summary of the experience gained during construction of this +$2.9 billion project, an overview of the system performance since its activation in 2018, and a look-ahead to the next phase of the DC Clean Rivers program: the Potomac River Tunnel.

In this paper, the nonlinear finite element analysis is used to study the support system of a tunnel which is designed to pass through deep-embeded stratum. The rock mass is rather intact, though a section of tunnel will pass through the weak belt. Under the influence of the high ground stress, the condition of stability and the form of support become complicate. This paper, talcing into account the nonlinear properties of rock mass and the Interaction between rock, and support, makes a comparison between the two kinds of soft and rigid support systems, and analysed the changes of their bearing forces.

WEDNESDAY night, by long tradition, is al- ways set aside for the annual dinner, even when, as it was this year, it is Ash Wednesday. Whether the somewhat smaller attendance than last year is attributable to that cause, the unexpectedly long persistence of business depression, or whatever may have been the reason, it was a joyous occasion, and the grand ball-room of the Commodore Hotel was as completely filled With diners as * was consistent with com- fort. In the half hour before the dinner was actually served the guests assembled in an adjoining room and not only exchanged greetings but proceeded along the receiving line to greet the guests of honor. The number present was so large that hardly more than half of them had been able to do this before the summons to the dining room sounded and a hearty and immediate response was made to it. Toy balloons at each plate, inflated and directed at the heads of companions or nearby friends, but which were just as likely to carom from the nose of a hurrying waiter, successfully broke the ice as well as not a few plates. It would be interesting to know whether the pleasure the guests derive from these de- vices is in part based on the all-too evident annoyance of the waiters, and what the relative quantitative relationships are.

The Los Angeles County Transportation Authority’s Purple Line Extension Phase 1 is a $3.12 billion (USD) design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue and extending west 3.92 miles under Wilshire Boulevard and terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The project alignment runs through the heart of the world famous La Brea Tar Pits and one of the world’s largest urban oil elds. This paper presents a case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to achieve successful construction of the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment. Further, this paper outlines the proactive partnership between the owner, Los Angeles County Metro (Metro), the Design Builder, Skanska-Traylor-Shea oint enture (STS), and Southwest Geophysics who provided the geophysical services. Specically, the project included background review of historic site data (e.g., oil eld maps, building foundation plans, historic aerial photographs, etc.), geophysical demonstration testing to ascertain the capability of borehole magnetics to detect oil wells, directional drilling of thousands of feet of horizontal and vertical boreholes, collection of high resolution magnetic gradiometer data along vertically and horizontally cased boreholes as well as the collection of surface magnetometer data, discovery (“ground truthing”) of detected geophysical anomalies, and abatement of potential obstructions within the tunnel alignment.

"Conventional single heading track drifting in the hard rock mining industry has not shown any significant improvements in advance rates, despite the advent of modern track jumbos and igh speed muck handling systems .This paper presents Kiena 's experience in using a 7 ft 2 in. diameter larva Mark 6 Tunnel-Boring Machine (TBM) for driving 6000ft of drift.IntroductionKiena Gold Mines is located about 5 miles west of the town of Val d'Or, Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal. The mine commenced production in October 1981 and has gone through various expansions of ore production with 287 916 metric tonnes in 1982 to reach 453 800 metric tonnes in 1986.Due to the majority of claims being covered by a lake, a grassroots exploration drive of remote areas of the property was required to allow diamond drilling on a yearly basis. High speed sequential excavation methods (SEM) of single heading drifting in the mining industry has not progressed much in the past 20 years despite the advent of electric-hydraulic jumbos, Haggloader and Hagglund type cars. Certain examples of record SEM drifting advances have been performed in the past but only under very specific ground and cost conditions."

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. ABSTRACT: Geological conditions associated with alpine environments in combination with high overburden in many tunnelling projects lead to squeezing behaviour. The main problems associated with such conditions include large deformations, overstressing of supports, and lack of face stability. In the past during Alpine tunnelling the problem of large displacements incompatible with rockbolt – shotcrete support systems have been solved by leaving gaps in the lining to accommodate excessive deformations. In the late nineties, yielding elements have been developed, which are integrated into the lining. The paper deals with the basic concept, the design and the application of that system, which has been successfully used in several Alpine tunnels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die geologischen Verhältnisse in den Alpen führen bei großer Überlagerung häufig zu starken Deformationen während des Baues von Tunneln. Die großen Verformungen führen in vielen Fällen zu einer Überbeanspruchung des Ausbaues und Problemen mit der Ortsbruststabilität. Früher ist man dem Problem der Unverträglichkeit des Ausbaues mit den hohen Dehnungen durch Freilassen von Deformationschlitzen im Spritzbeton begegnet. Vor etwa 10 Jahren wurden duktile Stahlelemente entwickelt, welche in die Spritzbetonschale integriert werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept, der Planung und der Ausführung. RÉSUMÉ: Les conditions géologiques dans les Alpes conduisent fréquemment lors d'un grand recouvrement à des déformations fortes pendant la construction des tunnels. Les grandes déformations conduisent dans beaucoup de cas à une surtension du revêtement et à des problèmes avec la stabilité de front de taille. On a fait face plus tôt au problème de l'incompatibilité du revêtement avec les extensions élevées par libérer des rainures dans le béton projeté. Ore grinding mills are really just slowly rotating barrels, but barrels that are growing in size so fast that the application of electric drives for them is rapidly approaching a technology like that for wind tunnels or pumped storage drives. This application is particularly worthy of care because some 40% of the 75 megawatts of power used by a large copper ore concentrator, or some 60% of the 200 megawatts supplied to a large iron ore concentrator, are for grinding. These ore plants are located where the ore is, not where a utility happens to be. So, the challenge is not only to choose a drive and .power transmission for reasonable cost, high performance, reliability and minimum maintenance, but to afford the interface between mill drive and power distribution and source systems to minimize the whole ore plant's monthly power bill, or costs of self generation. Conclusions can be reached in optimizing a drive selection only for each particular ore plant's set of parameters, but by identifying the criteria for selection and then weighting each type of drive per criteria, yardsticks for final choice become apparent. This is the purpose of this paper. Grinding action takes place inside the barrel, where the ore charge is ground with the aid of balls, or mill length rods, or large chunks of ore as in autogenous grinding.

"AbstractThe scope of geophysics in civil engineering and the nature of exploration geophysics are briefly discussed. Engineering problems amenable to geophysical attack are illustrated by specific examples. The various methods available, accuracy of results, and costs are treated. The possibilities of new uses of geophysical techniques are pointed out.IntroductionTHE SCOPE of geophysics in engineering is different than in oil or mining exploration. In civil engineering, geophysics solves specific problems; as for example, what is the depth to bed-rock along the axis of a proposed dam? The area to be surveyed is of limited extent, and the subsurface information .sought is relatively near the surface. The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. The geophysical tools employed in the three fields are, however, quite similar; the differences are mainly in the objectives.The Natural Geophysical ExplorationThe terms geophysics and geophysical exploration have been used heretofore and will .be employed in what follows. The question is, therefore, What is geophysical exploration?Geophysical exploration is a line of field work where measurements are made at the ground surface with special instruments to get geological subsurface information. It is a blend of physics and geology since physical measurements are made •at the surface of the ground that can be interpreted in terms of subsurface conditions."
