THE Butler Mine property is situated in the vicinity of Pittston, in the Wyoming coal-field of Pennsylvania. The coal has been worked out from the fourteen-foot or Baltimore vein for a number of years on part of the tract, the old chambers remaining open as when originally abandoned. This vein outcrops on the Butler property, and is nowhere more than sixty feet below the surface of the ground on the line of the cut-off to be described. Above the fourteen-foot vein and about, say midway, between it and the surface of the ground, there is another small vein or rider of coal, about twelve inches in thickness. The rock between the two veins is a carbonaceous slate, about twenty-five feet in thickness. Above the smaller vein is a bed of sandstone, varying in thickness, but generally not less than from eight to ten feet. This sandstone is also carbonaceous, but the proportion of carbon is much less than in the slate below. Both rocks have been analyzed, and before the next Institute meeting, the writer hopes to be able to furnish the exact proportions. The sandstone is overlaid with debris up to the surface of the ground. Some time during the spring of 1876, it was found that the coal left in the worked-out mine had been set on fire, and that the fire was gradually spreading. Inquiry developed the fact that the fire had originally been started by a woman, who had taken up her abode in an old tunnel leading into the workings. Owing to some delay in the early attempts made to extinguish the fire, it finally gained such headway that no ordinary means were found to be effectual. Finally, Mr. C. F. Conrad, civil and mining engineer, of Pittston, Penna., was called in as consulting engineer. He advised the making of a thorough cut through such portion of the old workings as had not been reached by the fire. It was found by survey that this cut could be limited to a length of about one thousand two hundred feet, as the vein faulted on both sides, and that the greatest depth of the cut would be about sixty feet. Subsequently it was decided to tunnel part of the way, thus saving the deepest portion of the cut. In 1856-7, there occurred a fire in the same mine. Two stone-walls in V-shape running from the apex of the V towards the outcrop, were built to cut the fire off, and these walls were carried as far as the vein had at that time been worked. The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.

"Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. The Cadia Mine is located 25kms South West of Orange in the central west of New South Wales (NSW), Australia (Figure 1). Orange is a major regional centre with a population of 35,000 people. Cadia has a history of mining and exploration dating back to 1851 and shortly after the first Australian gold rush at Ophir, north of Orange. Newcrest Mining commenced an exploration program at Cadia Hill in 1992. This identified a substantial zone of copper and gold mineralization. Subsequent resource definition drilling defined an orebody with a mineable reserve of 200 million tonnes of ore with an average gold grade of 0.74g/t and 0.17\ copper. A full feasibility study commenced in 1994, approvals to proceed with development were granted in September 1996 and the processing plant was commissioned in July 1998. The project came in on budget at A$440 million and on time, 24 months from design to construction. The estimated operating cost at the time of commissioning was A$8.85/t of mill feed.

Caland Ore Company Limited, a subsidiary of Inland Steel Company of Chicago, Illinois, leased an iron ore deposit from Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited on January 1, 1953.. This deposit lay underneath a lake and was covered with 161,000,000 cubic yards of Jake bottom material, mainly silt. Removal of this material was done on a contract dredging basis. This contract was divided into a plant phase and an operating phase. The plant phase consisted of supplying two cutter-type suction dredges, each with two booster pumps in the discharge lines. All six pumps were centrifugal, had 36" discharges and were powered by 10,000 horsepower electric motors. Peak demand was 59,157 kilowatts. One hundred and forty miles of steel tower line were built to bring power to the site. The balance of the plant consisted of tugs, 12 miles of discharge line, varying from 36" diameter to 42" diameter and attendant land-based equipment. A number of interesting dams were constructed

"THE SS640 AGRIGENTO-CALTANISSETTA PROJECT The Caltanissetta tunnel is part of the works for the construction of the second 28km-long maxi section of the SS 640 motorway of Porto Empedocle, from km 44 to the junction of Imera in Sicilian hinterland. Amongst other major infrastructure works, the €740 million ANAS (Italian national roads and highway administration agency) project consists of four twin tube tunnels three of which are being excavated by conventional means. The longest tunnel, underpasses the Caltanissetta city and has a length of 3.9km under a maximum overburden of 120m. The JV consisting of CMC of Ravenna and TECNIS SpA won the design & built tender in 2010. Construction started in early spring 2012 following the approval of detailed design and later on the approval of design for construction. THE CALTANISSETTA TUNNEL The Design Phase Tender design and detailed design foresaw the construction of 13.4m excavation diameter tunnels that were to be enlarged in a second phase to create, every 600m, 50m-long tunnel sections for emergency parking. During the design for construction project phase the JV proposed to replace the 13.4m tunnel with a 15.08 excavation diameter that incorporated apart from the two 3.75m wide lanes a 3.25m wide continuous emergency lane. This significant tunnel section modification was associated with better road safety conditions, simpler and safer construction procedures, better statics for the tunnel section while in terms of overall cost the solutions were equivalent.Geologic context The tunnel is located in the middle of the geologically known Caltanissetta basin that is intersected by various tectonic structures. The geologic context for the tunnel scale, was defined in collaboration with the University of Catania in early project phases. For almost its entire length the tunnel is excavated in the Terravecchia formation that represents the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence that was formed in the Tortoniano period of Miocene. The quite complex geological model is also characterized by the presence of the so-called Trubi formation that consists of clay and marl clay. Almost 90% of the tunnel traverses formations that are quite similar in terms of excavation behavior. Exception to this are thrust zones and a calcareous stretch of the alignment. This last segment has a length of 200m and was identified since the very beginning as a tunneling challenge due to the combination of very poor geotechnical properties and an important water load."

WHILE 1931 was a most important year in the history of Canadian copper smelting and refining, nevertheless, due to the low price of copper and the in- ability of the International Nickel Co. to market its full capacity of nickel. the production of both copper and nickel was considerably less than the total installed capacity for the production of these metals. IIY the nor- mal course of events, 1931 should have seen a great increase in the production. of both copper and nickel in Canada, because the large extensions to both the copper smelting plants and the copper and nickel refinery capacity, which had largely been completed in the year 1930, should be showing their effect.

The Candelaria copper-gold mine is located approximately 25 km south and east of Copiapo in Region III, Chile. The original concentrator was designed to treat 28,000 t/d (30,800 stpd) of chalcopyrite-bearing ore through a circuit consisting of a single 11.0 m (36 ft) diameter SAG mill, two ball mills, conventional rougher and scavenger flotation, column cell cleaner flotation, and ceramic disc filtration. The plant was commissioned in August 1994 and quickly reached capacity and expected levels of metallurgical performance. In May 1996, a decision was made to double the capacity of the concentrator by the addition of a second line of equipment. The expanded facilities were commissioned in October 1997, less than 18 months after the decision to proceed, and well within the budget. The original concentrator facilities were replicated or duplicated as much as possible, however, a number of important equipment changes were made to take advantage of industry developments since the original concentrator was designed. These included the use of Eimco 120 m3 (4,200 ft3) cells for rougher and scavenger flotation and the installation of a Svedala VTM -800 Vertimill for regrinding. This paper describes the rationale behind these changes and explores the reasons for the success of the project.

The Cannington deposit is one of the largest accumulations of silver-lead known. Located 135 km southeast of Cloncurry in North West Queensland (Figure 1), Australia, the deposit is currently in the feasibility stage of its development. The deposit is named after the nearby Cannington Pastoral Property which runs some 25 000 sheep on 'downs' country. The investigations of the Cannington deposit are carried out under the authority of Mineral Development Licences 139 and 144 and Exploration Permit for Minerals 6788, Answer Downs. Exploration for Broken Hill Type (BHT) silver-lead-zinc deposits in the Mt Isa region has been undertaken by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited's Minerals Division (BHPM) since the early 1980s following in-house research which showed that the Eastern Succession of the Mt Isa Block exhibits characteristics which were favourable for hosting BHT

"Cape Breton is an island on the eastern extremity of Nova Scotia, Canada. Here, coal mining under the Atlantic Ocean has been a way of life since the early French militia mined coal for heating purposes in 1720. Despite many ups and downs over the intervening years, the coal industry has survived and is now in a favourable position to benefit from the upswing in international coal usage.Mining in Cape Breton Early mining in Cape Breton was done by hand picks and shovels. The coal was loaded into mine cars which were hauled by horses to the main haulage system for transport to surface. Later, compressed-air cutting machines and drills led to the use of explosives to blast the coal so that it could be loaded by hand and transported as above. In 1923, longwall mining (by hand) was introduced. In 1950, the Dominion Coal Company developed the Dosco continuous miner in order to mechanize the longwall coal-getting operation. At this time, conveyor belts came into wide-spread use, along with diesel locomotives to haul mine cars from the longwall face to the main transport system. During this period, coal was also mined by conventional mechanized room-and-pillar equipment such as cutting machines, loaders, roof bolters, etc. This system evolved into the use of the continuous ·miners of today, which are employed in the Lingan Mine room-and-pillar section. However, this method is only satisfactory at shallow depths and gradients. For these reasons, almost all the coal in this coal field will be mined by longwall methods. In 1968, the Government of Canada expropriated the assets of the Dominion Coal Company on Cape Breton Island in order to prevent complete closure of an uneconomic industry by its owners. The government created, by an Act of Parliament, the Cape Breton Development Corporation which now operates the coal mines, coal preparation plants, railway, shipping pier and ancillary services (Fig. 2). Since its inception, the Corporation has closed three mines, opened two new mines, is in the process of developing a third new mine, and has invested heavily in the one mine which remains from its previous owners."

Introduction Although gold production in British Columbia began in 1859, lode gold was not produced till 1893. Since 1900, the annual production of lode gold has fluctuated between $3,000,000 and $6,000,000. About twenty per cent of this production may be regarded as by-product gold from base metal mining. The remainder comes from a few isolated but important mines, such as the Rossland mines, Nickel Plate, Surf Inlet, Premier, Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo Gold Quartz, and from several less important mines. All of the above, except Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo, are approaching or have reached the point of exhaustion, but all are now receiving, under the stimulus of the. present gold-mining boom, drastic resuscitative treatment, with, in some cases, signs of resurrection. Notwithstanding this, however, the main interest at the present time is focussed on the Bridge River and Cariboo fields. Both these fields were discovered in the early 'sixties' and, apart from the Cariboo placer production, both have from time to time contributed small amounts of lode gold; but it is only during the last two years that the real possibilities of these areas were discovered. and that they began to assume the appearance of goldfields of major importance. The two fields are sorme three hundred miles distant from one another and contain deposits of distinctly different types, so that the only reason for including them in one article is the fact that they came into prominence more or less simultaneously and at a time coinciding with, but not otherwise related to, the present gold-mining boom.

IT is proposed to give, first, a description of the works ; second, a report of the first six months of the present blast; and third, such improvements as have been suggested by the practical working. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. THE Cerro de Pasco Railway Co., owned and operated by the Corporation, is a common carrier whose chief functions are transportation of ore and concentrates from the mines at Cerro de Pasco to the smelter in Oroya, and haulage of coal from the coal mines at Goyllarisquisga to the coal washery at Fundicion. Connecting with the Peruvian Central Railway at Oroya, the C. de P. Railway maintains joint, daily freight and passenger service from Lima and the port of Callao to Cerro de Pasco, terminal of the C. de P. main line and gateway to the Huanuco Valley. Extending from Oroya to Cerro de Pasco the main line is a standard-gauge roadbed of 70-lb. rail, 132 km. long with a maximum compensated grade of 2.25 per cent and a curvature of 16°, climbing from an elevation of 12,272 ft. above sea level at Oroya, lowest station on the line, to 14,208 ft. at Cerro de Pasco. The highest point reached by the C. de P. is on the coal branch at Alcacocha where the rails are 14,385 ft. above the sea.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. "Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014.
