Cross passageways between adjacent tunnels in passenger rail or transit systems may be used during train fire emergencies to evacuate passengers to points of safety in the non-incident tunnel. Rescue trains can be brought into the non-incident tunnel to remove passengers to expedite evacuation times as compared to walking along bench walls to the nearest egress stairs. In cases of multiple train emergencies, the required ventilation capacities can result in high pressure differences between the incident and non-incident tunnels. These pressure differences can make it difficult or impossible for a normal person to open doors of a cross passageway between adjacent tunnels. If opened, the velocity of the airflow through an open cross passageway can reach levels high enough to impede passenger evacuation. This paper describes the analysis of this problem for a sample rail tunnel. A ventilation concept that mitigates the problems of high cross passageway door opening forces and high velocities through open cross passageways is presented.

"The paper discusses the results of 3D finite element analyses to investigate the effect of face support pressure and soil permeability on face stability conditions in EPB tunnelling. Two main types of face behavior are identified: Undrained conditions ahead of the tunnel face, typically occurring in soils with permeability less than about k=5·10-7m/s, are shown to be favourable for face stability; analyses show that an applied face pressure comparable with the initial hydrostatic pore pressure is sufficient for adequate face stability, even for soils of relatively low strength. Drained or partially conditions, typically occurring in soils with permeability higher than about k=5·10-6m/s, show that face stability is strongly dependent on the horizontal effective stress of the muck in the excavation chamber; the presence of even a small effective stress in the muck is very beneficial for face stability conditions and can be a possible explanation of successful EPB tunnelling through relatively permeable soils. INTRODUCTION Face stability is probably the most important aspect in urban tunnelling. Usually, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are utilized, to ensure that a reasonable amount of face pressure is exerted on the advancing excavation face, reducing ground loss and preventing potential instability of the face core, thus controlling the amount of disturbance caused by tunnel excavation to surface structures. However, the ideal amount of face pressure depends on several factors (ground and groundwater conditions, tunnel size and depth, muck conditioning, etc.) which are difficult to include in analytical calculations. For many years, conventional empirical or analytical methods (e.g. Anagnostou & Kovari 1996) were the only available tools for quantifying face stability and selecting the required face pressure. In the last few years, however, numerical analyses have gained power over conventional methods, allowing more accurate designs and providing useful information about the anticipated ground deformations due to tunnelling. Numerical analyses have also been used in assessing safety against face instability using face extrusion (horizontal face displacement) calculations (e.g. Prountzopoulos 2012)."

The Mufulira smelter (1, 2,' 3, 4,) is one of three smelters situated on the Zambian Copperbelt to treat concentrates and other intermediate products produced in the area. Two mining companies, Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) each have 51% Zambia Government participation. RCM operates two smelters, one at its Mufulira Division and the other at its Luanshya Dl vision. NCCM operates one smelter at its Rokana Division (5). The Mufulira smelter was commissioned in 1937 with two reverberatory furnaces and four converters. The final product, blister copper, was cast from a holding furnace. In 1952 two anode furnaces and a common casting wheel were installed to feed a new and adjacent electrolytic refinery. In 1956 the smelter was extended to accommodate increasing production from the new Chibuluma mine and expansion at Mufulira mine. A third reverberatory furnace, a fifth converter and duplicate anode processing and casting facility were added. The Copperbelt smelters suffered a loss of production potential when higher ash content coals were used in reverberatory smelting furnaces from 1966 onwards. This, and the planned production increases from Mufulira and other RCM mines, indicated a smelting shortfall of 55,000 tonnes of copper a year in the combined capacity of the RCM smelters.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In June 1958 four full faces were blasted, and in October 1958 full face grunching without prior cutting, Le. inducer shotfiring, was introduced in No. 1 Tunnel as a production feature. The environmental problems such as vibration, and air blast are often faced, and discussed on mining, quarrying, civil constructions, shaft-tunnel, pipeline, and dam operations where blasting is inevitable. It is necessary to establish national standards towards to minimize the environmental problems induced by blasting and judicial matters in our country as it is in USA, EU countries and the other developed countries. This necessity and the obligatory of accepting the European Union criteria for Turkey that has started the procedure of joining to EU emphasize the importance of this study. In other words, the establishment of a particular national standard related with this subject is inevitable for Turkey. This will be possible only by studying, applying scientific methods and techniques by the experts.

The environmental problems arising from ground vibration has been faced and discussed frequently in various industries such as quarry, mining, civil works, shaft, tunneling, pipe line and dam construction etc. where the blasting operations are unavoidable. In bench blast design, not only the technical and economical aspects, such as block size, uniformity and cost, but also the elimination of environmental problems resulting from ground vibration and air blast should be taken into consideration. The prediction of ground vibration components plays an important role in the minimization of the environmental complaints. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in the quarries located on the different sides of Çatalca district in Turkey. In order to predict peak particle velocity level for this district, ground vibration components were measured for shots during bench blasting at these quarries. In blasting operations; ANFO is commonly used as blasting agent at the quarries. The type of priming and firing differed from quarry to quarry. The parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events by using different type vibration monitors. The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined by using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity. In order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighboring buildings, and structures at the Çatalca district, the particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms due to the lack of a national standard in Turkey. Then, the data pairs belonging to these quarries were gathered together to represent the district and were analyzed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives average line at 95% confidence level and upper bound 95% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance

THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. The IVAR Project is Norway's largest sewer project presently under construction. One part of it is an 8.1 km (26 575 ft) long, 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in.) diam tunnel, bored in one year. The tunneling project has been running smoothly; however, not everything has been easy. A few of its features are highlighted in this paper: The use of 9 0 (12 cu yd) muck cars on a double track back-up in such a comparatively narrow tunnel. Employing only four men in the tunnel, including the loco driver. A quartzite dyke - 96% quartz with 350 MPa (50 000 psi) and more compressive strength - turned out to be 640 m (2 100 ft) thick instead of the predicted 90 m (300 ft). Passing under a gaseous swamp with only same 5 m (16 ft 5 in.) of rock cover on top.

All Sanitary District contract documents for new tunnel construction permit the Contractor a choice of four (4) separate alternate tunnel sections. This is the result of a continuing District policy to encourage at all times the use of the most suitable construction techniques and to attract to District construction the broadest spectrum of proven capabilities. Figure 1 indicates the alternate tunnel sections allowed on District contracts as follows: 1. A horse shoe section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 2. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured in place reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 3. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner grouted in place; and 4. Circular section, no temporary lining, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner to be jacked in place. The Sanitary District now has in operation 10,500' of 5'6" I.D. and 6,500' of 5'0" I.D. jacked tunnel. An additional 5,600' of 7'6" I.D. jacked tunnel is currently under construction.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

United States newspapers of 25 or 30 Years ago ran headlines every few weeks telling of some mine disaster. Each disaster was a first-page attraction for a day or so then was forgotten until the next sensational event, frequently another mine disaster, a few weeks later. Interspersed with the large mine disasters were the so-called ?snipping? mine accidents that caused the death of one or two mine workers. The summation of mine fatalities of all types usually exceeded 3,000 a year, and nonfatal accidents to workers in mines of the country approximated 250,000 annually. From 1906 to 1910, inclusive, there were 84 major explosion disasters (about 17 per year) in. United States coal mines. The resulting fatalities totaled 2,388 for the 5-Year period. These frightful catastrophes helped the number of fatalities in coal mines of the country to reach the enormous total of 13,288 for the 5 years, or an average of 2,658 per year.

"The coal reserves of the Crow's Nest Basin in British Columbia have been known since the late 1860's. The 51.0-million-long-ton (over 15 years) sale of low-volatile coking coal to Japanese steel mills, as finalized in 1968, establishes the importance of these coal reserves in the world markets.In the early stages of the exploration program, which began in January, 1967, emphasis was placed on deter-mining the reserve of underground low-pitch coal within the No. 10 or Balmer seam of the Kootenay coal forma-tion. The finding of low-cover reserves in excess of 100,000,000 tons altered the initially planned underground program. Extensive tests were performed, establishing the excellent coking characteristics of the open-cast Balmer coal. Due recognition was given to the ultimate reclamation costs of mined lands and associated spoil areas.t was determined that, to achieve the costs desired, a high productivity was necessary, requiring large mining equipment. Operating criteria were set out, based on producing 4.2 million tons of clean coal per year. To optimize recovery, the preparation plant feed size was fixed at Yi in. x 0. The initial basic design capacity of the plant was 1,000 tph. The washing plant is composed essentially of four separate cleaning sections: a dedusting section; a multi-stage heavy media cyclone section; water cyclones; and flotation cells. Subsequent to the basic program, additional sales were made of 6.0 million long tons over the initial three-year period and the plant capacity was raised to 1,400 tph through the addition of a 400-tph coarse-coal treatment section. All wet coal products from the fine coal plant will be dried in a 70-tph (water) heat dryer. A unit-train concept of coal transportation between the mine site and the Westward Terminals at Roberts Bank has been negotiated with the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Facilities at the port will include a 4,000-tph rotary car bumper, 400,000-ton clean-coal stockpiles, and a bucket reclaiming system having a total ship-loading capacity of 6,000 tph."

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. INTRODUCTION New York City Water Supply—Background and History Since the 1840s New York City has been developing the largest, and perhaps, the best urban water supply and distribution system in the world in terms of quality and reliability. One of the engineering marvels of the modern world, the New York City water supply and distribution system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange Counties of New York State. The average daily supplies presently are running at almost 60 m3/sec(about 1,350 million gallons per day). The watershed for the New York City water supply system, under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), consists of19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes, and covers an area of approximately5,000 square kilometers (about 2,000 square miles) north of New York City. The watershed total available storage capacity is about two billion cubic meters (560 billion gallons) and is divided into three reservoir systems: the Catskill and Delaware watersheds located West of the Hudson River; and the Croton watershed, located east of the Hudson River, see Figure 1. The first element of the system, the Croton Aqueduct, started operations in 1842.Through several updates and expansions, the present-day Croton system was in place by 1911, providing a potential maximum supply of about 15 m3/s (about 340 mgd). The system includes ten reservoirs and three controlled lakes. In the late 1800s, with the tremendous growth of the City, New York City water engineers began to look for additional sources. Between 1907 and 1929, the City acquired water rights and constructed a new 148 km (92 miles) Catskill aqueduct to convey water from the Ashokan Reservoir to the City. SYNOPSIS Canadian Refractories, Limited, produce a wide range of basic refractories. The chief raw material use in their manufacture is the magnesite which is mined, and beneficiated in a heavy media separation plant, at Kilmar, Que. This paper describes the underground operation and the plant and explains how the gravity separation of light, siliceous gangue from the ore has changed the mining practice, increased the ore reserves, and improved the chemical uniformity of the crushed ore. HISTORY REFRACTORIES are essential in the production of steel and base metals and in other high-temperature processes. Basic refractories, chiefly composed of magnesia which is obtained by burning magnesite, are used to line and repair basic furnaces. When World War I cut? off the importation of Austrian magnesite, upon which North American industry had depended, domestic sources bad to be found. In Quebec, work was begun on deposits of magnesite at Kilmar, half way between Ottawa and Montreal and about ten miles north of the Ottawa river. By the end of the war substantial tonnages were being quarried and calcined, but, when Austrian magnesite again became available, the industry declined rapidly. In 1925, the National Research Council, in co-operation with the Federal Department of Mines, began an investigation of the industry's technical problems. The result of this research work, which was taken over fully by the Company in 1943 and is actively continued, is that the single product of the early 1920's has been supplemented by more than forty specialized products serving the metallurgical and chemical industries across Canada and in more than thirty other countries.

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda's domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda's U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. The Aurora project was selected as the one to be initially developed because of its relatively advanced stage of development. The

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) operates two water-intakes in Lake Mead, located 20 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Severe drought has caused decline in lake level by 85 feet since 2000 and future declines are expected. SNWA will construct a third deep-water intake to ensure existing water system capacity. This paper describes expected construction challenges for the new project that consists of: an intake structure and tunnel beneath the lake, pumping station, pipeline to connect existing treatment facility, and interconnecting underground adits. The project will be completed in the year 2012 for total estimated cost of approximately $600 million.

This case history refers to the detonation of the two largest chemical explosions on the Australian continent. An important element of feasibility studies and construction guidance included prediction of fragmentation results and ground vibration effects for the detonation of two very large "coyote" blasts, consisting of mined tunnels filled with explosives. The larger of the two blasts contained nearly 1 1/4 million pounds of explosives detonated instantaneously. The explosives were placed in specially designed tunnels under a quartzite mountain for the purpose of generating rock fill for the main dam on the project.
