The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

ECONOMICAL handling of a minimum of 25,000 tons of minus 3/4-in. ore per day, grinding it to 2 per cent on 65 mesh, and effecting a high recovery of the copper at the lowest possible cost were the principal aims in the design of the new Morenci concentrating plant. Dealing with a tonnage of this magnitude, it is obvious that lost motion cannot be tolerated. When ore is carried on a conveyor an unnecessarily long distance or elevated to a greater height than necessary, or when pulp flows in a launder by a circuitous route thereby losing elevation and distance, we have lost motion which is always costly both from the standpoint of construction and operation. In addition to the 25,000 tons of ore which must be handled, 100,000 tons of water per day has to be carried through the plant in the treatment of the ore. Though water is not so difficult to handle as the ore, the combined tonnage represents a figure which could easily run into a considerable monetary loss per day if all phases of the design were not carefully followed with the idea of eliminating any unnessary handing of materials.

Because of air pollution control regulations in the early 701s it became necessary to clean effluent gases from the Morenci Reduction Works Smelter. Feasibility studies indicated that this could be accomplished most efficiently by using the smelter gaseous effluent to feed a sulfuric acid plant. Complying with air pollution control regulations thus created the need to dispose of relatively large amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid. Typical Morenci ores contain substantial amounts of oxidized copper minerals which are not recoverable by flotation. In addition, there is low sulfide, high oxide material which can be leached, but is not suitable for flotation concentration. Early in 1971 sufficent data had been accumulated to show that a leaching plant for the Morenci tailings could use a large portion of the sulfuric acid produced by the Smelter. It was determined that for all practical purposes leaching of the available copper was complete in two hours or less. Capital expenditures could not be justified for more than two stages of counter current decantation for recovery of the leached copper, and the plant was designed with these criteria in mind.

"There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

The in situ rock mass rating system û IRMR - leading to the mining rock mass rating system - MRMR - for jointed rock masses has been used (and abused) in mining operations around the world for the past 27 years. Despite the recent development of elaborate design procedures and computer-aided design packages, MRMR remains one of the most versatile and practical mine design systems available. It is important to realise that the rock mass classification system should not be replaced but rather complemented by more sophisticated and detailed design procedures. The classification system is not only the æcrudeÆ method used for initial assessment (as described in some geotechnical literature) but also in many respects a very effective and practical engineering tool. MRMR could, and should be used during the entire stage of mine life as an integral part of the design process. The objectives of this paper are to illustrate using practical case histories from the past decade, some of the pitfalls of the MRMR classification system, to clarify certain misconceptions in its application and update its mining application.

Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

As an important part of the concept validation phase of the MX Advanced ICBM development program, Air Force System Command's Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) Program Office developed and demonstrated large trenching and cast-in-place equipment for placing many miles of buried concrete tunnel rapidly and economically. A tunnel or "buried trench" containing a mobile ICBM is one of the candidate basing models for MX. Upon remote command, the cannister housing the missile would break out of its concrete tunnel and earth overburden by erecting itself to a suitable angle and then launching the missile. The ICBM Program Office developed two each trenchers, cast-in-place machines, and breakout mechanisms, as well as a mobile concrete truck unloader. The machines were demonstrated in varying soil conditions in the southwest US. The breakout mechanisms were demonstrated nearby as well. EVEN though the world has not been crying for more copper for the last three or four years there has been some important mill and smelter construction. Discovery and development of large new high-grade copper deposits in Africa has led to the construction of extensive reduction facilities there, prominent among which is the concentrator and smelter of the Rhokana Corporation at N'Kana. Northern Rhodesia. The 3000-ton concentrator adjoins the central shaft. A little over half a mile to the southeast, at an altitude of 40,010 ft., is the smelter, designed on the site by 1. H. Wynne. It is arranged primarily to treat N'Kana copper concentrates, but can also handle concentrates and direct-smelting ore from outside sources. Excavations were started late in 1930; concrete was first poured on Jan. 6. 1931; and the first blister cop¬per was cast on March 1.9, 1932, less than fifteen months later. During this period, which included several months of heavy tropical rains, some 10,000 cu. yd. of concrete was poured and 41000 tons of structural steel erected under the supervision of construction engineer, A. Ek, with a labor force of 60 to 30 Europeans and about 300 natives. The steelwork was fabricated by Head Wrightson & Co. in England, and the boiler plant equipment furnished and erected by the International Combustion Co. Ltd.

Introduction Several basins of the Nanaimo series, a group of coal-bearing sedimentary rocks of Upper Cretaceous age, underlie parts of Vancouver island and the adjacent gulf islands. One, the Nanaimo basin, occurs on the southern half of the west shore of the gulf of Georgia. About fifty square miles at the north end of this basin are known to be underlain by productive coal seams, this area being known as the Nanaimo coal field. Coal has been mined from two horizons- that of the Wellington seam, fairly low in the series, and that of the Newcastle and Douglas seams, about the middle of the series. Coal has been mined here since the fall of 1852. About fifty million tons have been produced, almost half the total production of British Columbia. About seventy-two years ago, James Richardson of the Geological Survey made a reconnaissance of the coal measures on Vancouver island, and thirty-five years ago C. H. Clapp mapped and reported on most of the Nanaimo coal field. Twenty-four years ago, J. D. MacKenzie extended the work to those areas not mapped by Clapp. MacKenzie died before the results of his work could be published, but did issue a revised estimate of the Goal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island. Work by the present writer is a further contribution by the Geological Survey to knowledge of the island coal measures. Having spent more time in the field, and having had more data at his disposal than were available to his predecessors, the writer has been able to throw additional light on the Nanaimo, and other, coal fields on Vancouver island. The Nancy Creek Tunnel is a deep tunnel, designed to store and convey wastewater by diverting flows from trunk sewers currently at or near capacity in the northwest of the City of Atlanta. The tunnel, constructed in hard rock, has an overall length of 13,300 m (43,700 ft), and a finished diameter of 4.9 m (16 ft). The project is currently under construction by a joint venture of Obayashi/CJB for the City’s Department of Watershed Management. This paper describes the contractor’s techniques and equipment, as well as discussing challenges which were overcome. The project is scheduled to be complete in October 2005.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program is a major effort to address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area. The proposed system consists of three deep rock tunnel segments totaling 17.8 km (11.1 miles) in length that will provide 860,000 cu m (227 million gal) of storage at depths up to 99m (325 ft). This paper discusses 13.5 km (8.4 miles) of 6.64m (21.8 ft) finished diameter tunnel, four construction shafts, 19 dropshafts and one large diameter pump station shaft tapered from 1 5.2m (50 ft) at the surface to 27.4m (90 ft) at depth. All facilities are in preliminary design.

To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

To reduce fuel consumption in industrial and commercial fuel-burning plants throughout the Nation, cooperative efforts of thousands of individuals are required. These individuals are scattered over the country and hold various positions in thousands of independent establishments. To accomplish as much as possible on this problem during the Second World War, it was decided that personal contact with fuel users was absolutely necessary; publicity, although an important factor, could not by itself give satisfactory and needed results. It was planned to have qualified engineers visit commercial establishments to go over with them the problem of reducing their fuel consumption. The specific plan, toward which all efforts aimed and around which the rest of the program revolved, consisted in brief of 1. Conference of visiting engineer with management to obtain cooperation. 2. Appointment by management of a plant employee as fuel "waste chaser." 3. Work of engineer with "waste chaser" and, if appropriate, with plant operators on most efficient operation of equipment.

The generation and evaluation of solutions to body force problems is of extreme interest to the geotechnical profession, as all natural stress states must necessarily include some contribution from the weight of the material. In this chapter the elastic solution for the stress field around a circular, horizontal tunnel at an arbitrary depth beneath the surface of a half-space is reexamined. The influences of body force, initial stress, and free surface proximity are examined and related to in-situ cases. The solution as presented deals only with an isotropically elastic medium; this medium is further considered only in a half-space configuration. It is readily apparent that these restrictions impose severe limitations if analogies are attempted with in-situ cases where geologic discontinuities, inhomogeneities, and irregular boundaries exist. The question might be raised as to the propriety of geotechnically oriented researchers even considering such idealized conditions. There is, however, much to be gained from study of such solutions. The lack of geologic discontinuities and inhomogeneities allows the investigator to separate and leisurely examine such parameters as are included in the solution, without worry of interrelationships of a host of other parameters. Further, elastic solutions have had extensive usage prior to the development of such techniques as the finite-element solution. It is interesting to compare body force solutions with the external field solutions which in the past have been used for design purposes. Finally, the exact solution may be used to verify the accuracy of the finite-element type of solution. The mathematical solution on which this chapter is based was originally developed by R. D. Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. Australia is now committed to the most significant period of infrastructure investment since the 1960s and the current climate of project finance and public private partnership (PPP) model uncertainty means it is imperative that the affordability and certainty in delivery of infrastructure projects is maximised.In light of the current and forecast levels of infrastructure investment it is worth drawing comparison with a similar period of Australian expansion when the nation’s first railways were constructed. Similarly to over a century ago, we are following a trend in rapid development and are already reaping the inefficiencies that could be avoided with broader technical planning and improved client coordination.The original rail networks were developed by the individual states before they combined to form a Federation of states in 1901. As a result of the adoption of different gauges by 1917 a passenger wanting to travel by train from Brisbane to Perth had to change trains six times.Similarly in 2011, there is little parity between Australian states on the quality requirements (performance specifications) for road tunnels. Differences between states start most significantly with the size of the specified traffic envelopes, thus the size of tunnel required. Where ambiguity and differences exist in project documentation, performance specifi cations (PS) and broad technical requirements for road tunnel projects, any associated risk in interpretation ultimately ends up being incorporated in the bidder’s (constructor’s) final sell price.Whilst not nearly as inconvenient as having to change train at each state border, and largely unnoticed by the general tax paying motorist, this paper examines examples of apparent minor differences in Australia’s recently constructed road tunnels to highlight the differences in road tunnel specifications.The paper identifies how these small differences manifest themselves in major price penalties between projects and further, highlights the need for further specification review, refinement and standardisation across road tunnel jurisdictions to increase road tunnel affordability.

Preparation of suitable core specimens for physico-mechanical testing s not always possible, particularly for soft and clay-bearing rocks. Although several indirect test methods have been proposed to predict the properties of rocks, specimen preparation from soft rocks for some indirect tests is still difficult. For such cases, the needle penetration test has been developed. In this paper we present a study on the predictability of the physico-mechanical properties of pyroclastic rocks from the needle penetration index (NPI). The NPI, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity tests were performed in the laboratory on specimens from ten different locations in Turkey. Correlations were established between the NPI values and the physico-mechanical properties. Strong correlations were observed between NPI and both UCS and BTS. General correlations were found between NPI and both density and porosity.

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment.
