"The majority of tunnels for civil engineering applications are now being constructed using some form of mechanical excavation. Beginning in the 1960s with rock tunnel boring machines (TBM), the tunneling industry has introduced both earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry pressure balance (SPB) soil machines; mixed soil and rock machines and a variety of different mechanical devices for the construction of small diameter tunnels. Over time, these machines have become more powerful and more adaptable to a wider variety of ground conditions; so much so that tunnels are now being constructed in ground conditions and in the vicinity of third-party impacts that would have been considered beyond the state of the art just 10 years ago. Figure 1 is an example of a mixed ground crossover TBM used successfully at Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II.All of the above is highly advantageous for the tunneling industry, but it has also placed a much higher level of risk on the performance characteristics of the tunneling machines, on the contractors operating those TBMs and on the manufacturers of those machines. Most of the risks for a tunneling project are associated with creating the space inside of which the finished facility will be constructed. In order to create that space, the tunnel contractor must make many decisions about the best way to excavate the ground, the best way to control the ground at the face of excavation and the preferred method for supporting the ground around the tunnel in a manner that is safe for the workers and stable with respect to all of the overlying and adjacent existing structures. If it is proposed to use some form of TBM in order to build the tunnel, then the TBM becomes central to all three of these activities and becomes an integral part of managing the risks associated with these activities."

A relatively unexplored lead zinc deposit lies about 12 miles northwest of Revelstoke, B.C., in the highly metamorphosed Monashee Group of rocks of the Shuswap Terrane, Precambrian in age. Host rocks are of sedimentary origin and consist of gneisses, schists, marbles and quartzites with intermediary types. The marbles and quartzites provide good horizon markers. Using these it is possible to interpret the controlling structure which is a syncline overturned to the north, dipping south at about 45°, and plunging east at about 12°. The syncline is truncated at about halfway of its length on a peak on the west side of which a partial cross section together with superimposed minor folds may be seen. The quartzites and the two marble beds may be traced over much of the structure. There are two lodes, above the marble and below the quartzite, which converge eastward and which are the exposed edges of the same host bed -an impure limestone.

During my more than 40 years in the practice of underground construction and engineering, the industry has seen progress from the dig down to rock or hardpan or alternatively drive concrete or steel into the ground and count the blows; then you can be sure of you have a solid foundation; to the modern day, I?m willing to try anything to save money. Of course these are both exaggerations, but not gross ones. After getting bored being supervision on jobs counting blows, I struck out into the new field of ?tie-backs? as they were called in the United States, or ?ground anchors? as they were then termed in the United Kingdom. After installing some of the first permanent ground anchors for the Corps of Engineers on Lake Michigan as well as the highest loaded rock anchors of the time at two dams on the Ohio River, we were at the top of our game in the 1970?s. Subsequently in the 1980?s when my view of the future of ground anchors saw their installation becoming a commodity item, we branched out into ?Pin Piles? now known as Micro Piles, high capacity, steel tube encased, small diameter (5-12? or so), high capacity (100-500 tons) piling. Next came soil nailing, both temporary and permanent retaining walls, as at Cumberland Gap Kentucky. My next morph was into ?Cement Deep Soil Mixing? earlier on, known simply as ?soil mixing?. For this education I traveled to Japan several times and established a long-term, Joint Venture, relationship with one of the better known Japanese specialty ground modification companies. In Boston at the ?Big Dig? we established the then record size soil mixing project, 500,000 or so cubic meters of CDSM concluding in the year 2000. Since then I?ve been involved as a consultant mainly for dams and levees. Below is the story of how I came to be at this place in the road to innovation in Geotechnical processes.

In this paper, as in the 1960 CIM paper of the same name, s1gmf1cant new developments in electrical-mechanical mining equipment are briefly described. These include static thyristor-supplied D.C. drives for mine hoists, load-haul-dump systems, process controls with small and medium-size computers, and several other new items of equipment and Concepts. All the new hardware descriptions are given in the context of over-all process integration. This means the actual mechanical linking together of two or more processes and the preliminary step in the development of production-line mining.

Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls were a big part of the problem. They killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, which is the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How was this historic goal achieved? This paper starts with a modern analysis of the causes of the roof fall fatalities in 1968. Then it follows the reductions over time by category, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The paper shows that in 1968, more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

UOCK bursts are a phenomenon about which insufficient is known. This l.~ statement has a twofold meaning. In the first place, far too many people, both inside and outside of the mining industry, are woefully ignorant of the whole subject, and secondly, as those who are face to face with the problem in the mines realize, our knowledge of rock bursts is inadequate. The first group embraces the general public, who have never been enlightened on the subject, and a great many geologists and engineers who have never shown more than a curiosity about it. Such technical men do not realize what a vital problem it is to our mining industries. They are usually thankful that bursting ground is not their problem, and leave it to those unfortunate enough to run into it. From such men one often hears the pious opinion that if proper mining methods were used there would be no problem. It is hoped that this paper will give these people a different viewpoint. Those in the second group deserve much credit for what they have done and are doing. They are fighting a large and difficult problem. In the pages that follow, I have tried to give a bird's-eye view of that problem, and suggest new ways in which it may be attacked.

The rock properties improvement means the exchange of natural properties: increase of stability, strain and compress tension, reduction of gas-liquid filtering property, increase Jung- module, other mechanical and physical parameters of rocks by injection the hardening materials, such as polymeric pitches, micro-or geocements by special technology under high pressure, to fill cracks. Flow of liquid materials between the rock units and hardening under high pressure create full redistribution of rock pressure in rock massif. There are many reasons to use this technology in underground mining, tunnelling, creation barrier technology in raioactive, chemical and other danger material site etc.

THOUGH air jets occupy only a minor role in the ventilation of mines and other enclosures, their importance in this respect is greater than is commonly recognized and may be considerably increased as our conception of their modes of operation becomes clearer. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the ways in which air jets are involved in mine ventilation and some possible applications to the ventilation of mines and other enclosed spaces. The mention of air jets ordinarily suggests the use of some form of an air injector, such as the Venturi blower occasionally used for auxiliary ventilation in mines, or the Saccardo (injector) system used to a limited extent for ventilating railroad tunnels. Actually, the term covers such common phenomena as the discharge of air from fan pipes and coal-mine line brattices, and even from smoke stacks and fans. A knowledge of the general mode of air entrainment by jets also helps to explain certain phenomena-some mine-gas explosions, for instance-that otherwise would remain obscure. Jet action has been involved in three recent series of Bureau of Mines experiments in which the author has participated: experiments on fan-pipe discharge, on the dilution of gases discharged from a stack and on the ventilation of a ship's hold. Available data on the discharge of jets into large openings and on the design and performance of air injectors have been analyzed in considerable detail and supplementary experiments are planned for after the war. The results of the fan-pipe experiments have been combined with the analyses of data on jet discharge into large spaces, and have been published.1 The results of the stack-gas dilution tests, which refer to a jet discharged into a crosswind, have also been published2 and a paper on the design and performance of injectors has been prepared for publication.3 These technical experiments and analyses form the background and the documented evidence for the following nontechnical discussion of the use of air jets in mine ventilation. JET CHARACTERISTICS The jets commonly encountered are those in which the air is in turbulent-as opposed to laminar, or streamline-motion. The characteristics under discussion apply only to such turbulent jets and have their basis in theories of the mixing of turbulent air currents. Such jets have basic characteristics that are present, though variable in form, regardless of whether the jet expands freely in space, whether the expansion is limited by adjacent walls, or whether the jet propels air through a flow circuit. They expand at definite angles and entrain the surrounding air, even though the entrained air must be obtained by recirculation of their own air streams. ABSTRACT: In this paper, the strong interaction between the hardening shotcrete lining and the surrounding ground in NATM tunneling is investigated by means of axisymmetric analyses, accounting for the three-dimensional nature of the excavation process. The effect of the hydration of shotcrete on strength, stiffness, chemical shrinkage as well as microcracking and creep are accounted for. For the description of the mechanical behavior of the ground, a multi-surface plasticity model is employed. The performed analyses of the excavation process provide insight into the influence of each phenomenon accounted for in the material model for shotcrete on the response of the ground-shotcrete compound structure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In diesem Beitrag soll die Interaktion zwischen dem erhärtenden Spritzbeton und dem Boden auf der Basis axisymmetrischer Berechnungen untersucht werden. Derartige Berechnungen ermöglichen die Berücksichtigung des drei-dimensionalen Charakters des Vortriebprozesses. Die Auswirkung der Hydratation auf die Entwicklung der Festigkeit, Steifigkeit und der chemischen Schwindverzerrungen, sowie das Reißen und das Kriechen des Spritzbetons wurde berücksichtigt. Das mechanische Verhalten des Bodens wurde mittels eines Mehrflächenplastizitätsmodells simuliert. Die durchgeführten Berechnungen des Vortriebprozesses geben Einblicke in die Auswirkungen der Spritzbetoneigenschaften auf das Tragverhalten des Boden-Spritzbeton-Komposits. RÉSUMÉ: La stricte interaction entre le soutènement en béton projeté durcissant et le terrain dans un tunnel creusé avec la NATM est étudiée par des analyses axisymétriques, compte tenu de la nature tridimensionnelle des processus de creusement. Les effets de l’hydratation du béton sur la résistance, la rigidité et la contraction chimique, ainsi que sur la micro-fissuration et le fluage, sont mis en compte. Pour la description du comportement mécanique du terrain on emploie un modèle de plasticité multi-surface. Les analyses conduites mettent en évidence l’influence de chaque phénomène considéré dans le modèle constitutif du béton projeté sur la réponse de la structure composite terrain-béton projeté.

Peak laboratory strength data obtained from low permeability clay shales/rocks often display a bilinear or non-linear failure envelope. In many of these tests pore pressures are not measured because of issues associated with back-saturation prior to confined compressive loading. In such tests the effective state of stress at failure remains unknown and provides room for speculation. The non-linear shape of the failure envelope may have several reasons including the influence of capillary forces or the tendency of a saturated clay shale to dilate as the confining stress is changed. The former stems from sample preservation, preparation or core unloading effects and represents a partly saturated state (i.e., not representative for the in-situ state); the latter represents the response of a saturated material. This contribution discusses these issues based on a data set obtained from Opalinus Clay specimens, and concludes that without a careful back-saturation processes knowledge of the underpinning reasons for the non-linear failure envelope cannot be obtained.

Over the past decade there has been continual change in the way that mines have been managed and the component roles of those people who make up the total mine management system. Major issues have included the change in the business structure of mining companies, the change in on-site infrastructure, increased personal liability of managers for the safety and health of employees and increasing social and environmental pressures on managers and their staff. This paper looks at the changing roles of two of the many groups of professionals associated with the mining industry - the equipment supplier and the mining consultant. The profiles of the ACME Group Pty Ltd, suppliers of ventilation equipment and ancillary canvas and plastic products to the mining and construction industry, and Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd, Consulting Mining Engineers, are presented.

Geomechanics is one of the more specialised aspects of site supervision on a major tunnell- ing project. The controlled deformation of a rock mass as a result of tunnelling and the knowledge of loading of temporary and permanent underground supports are important for safe, economic construction. These basic parameters depend on the construction method and sequence and the geological conditions through which a tunnel is driven. Thus geomechanical monitoring during the construction phase provides feedback to a design team and allows any revisions to a design to cater for local conditions not revealed by earlier investigations. Detailed geological mapping is an integral part of geomechanics in the construction phase. It serves as a monitor on pre construction predictions and also forms part of the as- constructed record. If conventional excavation-techniques are adopted, geomechanics can provide a service of blast' vibration monitoring of surface structures in urban areas.

The course of motorway tunnel under construction was set only 2 m away from the main motorway. The thickness of the tunnel overburden rock was 9 m. During the tunnel construction the traffic on the motorway was not supposed to be interrupted. The tunneling was carried out by NATM with classical drilling of blastholes and by blasting.

The role of pre-conditioning in a caving operation has multiple benefits, ranging from assisting with improved caveability, normalising fragmentation and improving draw point hang-up frequency. At Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Operations, both the Ridgeway Deeps block cave the Cadia East Panel Cave have utilised pre-conditioning using hydraulic fracturing. Seismic response data inside and outside the pre-conditioned volume show the benefit of treating the full caving block. Cadia East has further developed pre-conditioning to mitigate developing seismic hazards associated with major structures (fault-slip events) and managing mine-wide seismic hazards in new caving operations where the potential for large damaging seismic events exists due to high stresses and hard competent rockmasses. A case study reviewing the impact of pre-conditioning to mitigate seismic hazard associated with fault slip is presented. Cadia East operation undertook a targeted hydraulic fracturing program and reduced the overall number of large events as an example of the benefits of pre-conditioning. This paper will review the application of Hydraulic Fracturing at Cadia and discuss the geotechnical and seismological parameters of seismic events that occur within and outside of pre-conditioned rockmass volumes to demonstrate the benefits that Hydraulic Fracturing bring to future caving operations.

The rapid development of real-time monitoring technology for the construction of large underground structures in urban areas can be attributed to: the zero-risk objective, the need for transparency between all parties involved and the control of real cost within the budget. Real-time monitoring can be an integral part of the construction contract (for example when compensation grouting is required) or independent, in particular when measurements of existing structures and buildings bordering the project are to be taken before construction starts. Three examples of extensive field instrumentation schemes are described: a large road tunnel in the Moscow suburbs, a new metro line in Amsterdam and major redevelopment works at a busy Central London rail interchange.

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

Small scale tests have been conducted in blasting vessels in the laboratory, where the effects of explosive composition, charge diameter, explosive confinement as well as additives to the explosive were examined on NO, NO2, CO and CO2 production. Fumes were analyzed continuously using a flue analyzer, providing analysis every 15 seconds. The results were compared to previous work conducted in the laboratory and to literature findings. It was found that the type of the explosive was the most dominant factor with emulsion explosives producing significantly less amounts of toxic gases. ANFO was shown to always produce nitrogen oxides, even when fuel rich. Tests were also conducted by detonating explosives in broken rock, simulating the release of products of detonation during the formation of a muckpile. Products of detonation were affected by the presence of atmospheric air or rock around the charge. Gaseous products of detonation migrated through the rock piles at different rates, resulting in a change of toxicity values over time. In the small scale experiments, CO appeared to travel faster than CO2 while NOX was not identified. Analysis of the gases that were released during digging, several hours after the blast, resulted in high temporary concentrations of toxic fumes.
